Transferring everything from a 3g to a 3gs

I have a 3g. My house was broken into and I lost my laptop, so I dont have the original computer I was using. I just got a brand new 3gs, and am going to use my brothers laptop to transfer music onto the new phone, but I want to take all of the music and contacts that I have and transfer them over, from my old phone to my new one, is it possible?

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
You can sync contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with supported applications on multiple computers.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize the computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
This will be a problem using iTunes on your brothers computer unless you both use the same iTunes account. Since you probably don't use the same iTunes account, you can create a separate computer login account for yourself on your brother's computer using an empty iTunes when logged into your computer account on his computer for the transfer of the iTunes content on your iPhone that was purchased/downloaded with your iTunes account after authorizing the computer with your iTunes account with iTunes when logged in to the computer under your login account. Before syncing contacts with a supported application on the computer when logged in to the computer under your login account, enter one contact in the supported application. Make the contact up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
If you sync contacts with a supported application under your brother's computer login account and your brother uses the application for his contact info, you will be provided a merge prompt with the first sync which will merge his contacts with your contacts in the supported application on his computer and on your iPhone.

I recently transfered everything from my emac to another one but now when I try to open iTunes I get the window that states: The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. The computer I transfered to had a bunch of files on it and I got full ownership of what was already there, so, how do I get to my iTunes library, I do have access as an administrator to the iTunes library (that works just fine) already there and I guess I must have had a newer version ofiTunes on my defunt eMac....

Tell us some version numbers please, of your Mac OS versions and iTunes versions on both computers (two eMacs yes?).

That is a pretty good guess.Try updating the second eMac's iTunes to at least the version that was on the first.

  • Transfered everything from TM but can't find it?

I transferred everything from my TM backup from my Imac Leopard backup, it transferred to my new Macbook Pro 13", but usually when I do this all of the original icons from the IMac appear on the new computer, and all of the mail, photos, itunes, etc are transferred to their proper place. It changed the user name on the new computer but where and how can I activate the integration of everything that has been transferred to their proper place.
I see files and applications have been transferred, but I don't know how to activate or find the contents of downloads, documents, itunes, iphotos, mail, etc.?
Did I do something wrong. This happened once before some months ago and I mistakenly did an erase and install and then transferred everything during setup assistant.

  • Transferring EVERYTHING from one computer to another w/ same source

I want to transfer all my iTunes files (playlists, music, play counts, everything) from one computer to another, on account of the logic board of my old one is messed up and I want to get everything on my Mac Book Pro.
    HOWEVER.
When I was using my old computer, I had my iTunes folder on an external hard drive, which would then be the source of all the music and where the new music would automatically go. So I have the external hard drive, and I can't save the playlists from my old computer because I can't use it.
So how do I transfer all the information? I've tried doing the whole "delete iTunes Data, import XML file" thing and it says it doesn't detect certain music and therefore doesn't place everything where it needs to be.
    Any help?

Well the way to work around it I think would be to remove the hard drive from your broken computer, assuming of course that your broken computer is broken because of something else besides the hard drive.
Put that drive into an external enclosure. Hook up to the new computer. Copy the iTunes stuff from the old drive into the new computer overwriting the existing database files on the internal.
Now with the other external hooked up, start iTunes and see if it then sees everything properly.

  • Transferring Everything from a WiFi iPad to a WiFi 3G iPad

My department purchased a WiFi iPad weeks ago, and I have been using it every day. I have apps, books, etc. on it. NOW we purchased a 3G iPad and I want to transfer everything from the old one into the new one - and give the old one to one of my direct reports for his use (without my stuff on it).
    How do I do that?

Old thread, I know, but I have the same problem. Taking a backup does *not* include everything.
Even this support article states that you have to sync music and stuff after the backup was taken:
"7. When the restore process is complete, your device will restart. Then it will be ready for use. You should keep your device connected to iTunes to sync data not contained in the backup (such as music, videos, apps, and so on). You can verify and change which data are synced by clicking the syncing tabs in iTunes."
    Taken from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109
So - HOW do I move EVERYTHING from the old iPad to the new one?
In this case it's my wife's iPad. She don't have a computer, just the iPad. I can take a backup with my Mac, but I certainly don't want to start syncing her music, apps and stuff. Especially since I don't have all her music in my iTunes library.
(In a logical and simple world I'd just backup her old iPad and restore the new one with the backup. Why isn't it working this way?)
Both iPads are on iOS 6 and my Mac is 10.8.2 with iTunes 11.

  • Transfering EVERYTHING from my old MacBook to my New MacBook

Hey, I was wondering the easiest way to transfer pretty much everything from my old MacBook to my new MacBook. I know there is Migration Assistent, but I don't have a firewire cable is there another cable I could possiably use. I want to get all the files I have, like Microsoft Word Doc's, Excel doc's, ppt shows, and ALL of my itunes music...about 400 songs. Most of my programs are internet downloads so I am not worried about that. My biggest concern is how can I get all of those doc's and stuff easily and quickly across to my new machine.
    Thanks!

So I don't suppose all your stuff would fit on a (or a series of) CD, DVD or flash drives? Most of these are cheap like borscht these days and may be the most cost effective. Or, if you had an external HDD and a freebie like iBackup?
All of these options would also offer you the advantage of then having a backup should (when) your new MacBook goes south....

  • Transfering everything from iPad to iPad 2

I have ipad 1 and tomorrow will get iPad 2 - is it rather easy to transfer the whole content of my present iPad (applications, data, settings etc. - about 15 GB) to the new iPad, via iTunes ? What would be the best way to do it ? Thank you

Yes, I've just done it and I've done like this:
    1) sync everything from the iPad 1 to the computer with iTunes
    2) plug the iPad 2 and sync everything back from iTunes, there is the option create a new iPad or restore from the previous one, and you choose the 2nd.
    3) update the software on your iPad 2 and it does all the procedure of updating first and after restoring everything back
    4) (optional) as all the icons where messed up, I turned on the iPad 1 and check the previous positions of any screen and redone the same thing directly on iTunes and synchronized again.
    5) erase everything from your iPad 1
    6) (optional) give the iPad 1 to someone else so we will multiple and prosper :D

  • Help transferring everything from old 3gs to new 4s

My girlfriend has just got a new 4s to replace her old 3gs.  Unfortunately, the (windows) desktop we used to sync the 3gs has recently pretty much died.  Is there any way to get all the data from the old phone to the new one easily?  I've got a macbook I can use to sync the new phone, but not sure I can get everything off the old phone this way...
If I lose the music that's not too much of a problem, but don't want to lose contacts, texts, apps, saves, settings etc.
    Thanks

You've got your work cut out for you, but here's what you need to do. First create a separate login on your computer for your GF. Then do the following...DO NOT UPDATE the software on the 3GS or connect the 4S until you've first done the following:
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from her phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your GF's computer, her phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to her phone or music ripped on her own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from her phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect her phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on her phone will be in her itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore her itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding her contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
Now that you've done the above, you can connect the 4S & follow these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109
You should be good to go.

  • I have just bought a new laptop, how do I go about adding iTunes to it and transferring everything from my old laptop?

Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive
I must tell you, I am in the situation that MegsiPhone described and I am confused as to what to do.  Here is what I have done thus far:
    1.  I installed iTunes on my new computer, I wen't ahead and set up a new library file locally, and pointed to my NAS for all the music and movies file in edit>advanced.  From what I recall, when I did I can remember getting a whole bunch of messages about apps, new versions, overwriting.  I don't recall, regadless I dismissed each on and did not override.  Anyway, that's all done now.
    2.  I can tell you that I used to back up three iPhones and an iPod touch to my old PC.  There is a mixture of 4 iTunes ID's with various app purchases, it seems a mess.
    3.  I did plug my phone in, it gave me the error message about syncing only to one computer.  Then I did a back-up and a sync.  I know it did not work right because it took a matter of seconds when I know it should take a lot longer.  Anyway, as a safeguard I am using iCloud back-up for now before I do anything else.
So, what do I do now to make this all right?  I would like to be able to sync mine and my wife's iPhone to the computer.  Should I not bother and just keep my back-up in the cloud and are there disadvantages to this?  For my son's iPhone, I can let him back-up to the old computer, I would assume that would remain good and I would not have any issues.  Should I erase the back-up on my new computer, erase the appss or whatever and start from scratch?  Kind of not sure how to handle, please help.

  • Problem transfering video from iPhone 4s to iPhone 3gs

i recorded a video on iPhone 4s and i need to transfer that same video on to my iPhone 3gs can any help me with this problem?

However, when I go to play them back in the latest Quicktime player the colours are wrong, mainly coming out purple.
On an XP system, the first thing I'd try would be the "Disable Direct3D acceleration in QuickTime" section of the following document. (iTunes uses QuickTime for video display, so the same basic troubleshooting step applies.) Restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect:

  • Transferring everything from old imac G3 to new mac

I don't know much about computers, so sorry if this is a stupid question... I have an old imac G3 which I bought new in 1999 or 2000. It is system 9. I don't use it anymore and it's not hooked up to the internet. I do have a lot of important pictures and documents on it. I'm planning on buying a new mac one of these days (don't know exactly which model yet but probably a laptop) and I want to know if all my old documents and files will be able to go straight onto any new mac with the latest OS. My documents are in microsoft word, whatever version of it was around 7 years ago. I have an external disk drive for my imac which plugs in with a USB port. My files are backed up on disks with this disk drive and I guess this would be how I transfer the files to a new computer. Would an external disk drive with old software for system 9 also work on a new system? Basically my question is, does any old software or application for system 9 also work on system 10?

In addition to the examples that Eustace provided, I recently found that AppleWorks v6 that was bundled with many iMacs will also run under OSX. My daughter had immediate need of a computer and no money to buy a new one. I upgraded our unused old iMac 400DV to Panther and added a larger hard drive. As I had no additional licenses for Office and my daughter needed a WP program, I restored AppleWorks from the iMac restore CD to the OS9 partition I made on the new drive.
When I launched AppleWorks, it opened in X, not "Classic." It had a few problems but it basically worked That version was 6.0.4 and the update to v6.2.9 available here cleared up all the little problems.
Upgrading an office computer to one that ran OSX showed me that any MS Office document created with Office 98 (OS9) would open just fine with Office 2004 (OSX). When you save the document it automatically converts it to the later version unless you tell it not to.

  • Transfering everything from I Touch to new comp.

Using I Tunes can this be done. Music, Pics contacts bookmarks and so on. Or will the I Touch be wiped out ? The I touch was used to back everything up. Fortunately before my wife dropped her laptop !

Think of it like this, you go to Brandxmart and buy a DVD. Cool right? DVDs rock. But... nobody wants to only watch them in the front room all the time, so say you take it in the master bedroom and watch it in there while you kick back.
The DVD doesn't care what player you play it in. And you bought it fair & square.
I reckon that's how it is with iTunes and iPods. It's a good system.

  • Just got a new macbook pro and transferred files from my old macbook. Everything is fine except my iphoto will not show photos.

I just got a new macbook pro and transferred everything from my old macbook. My photos show up as thumbnails in iphoto, but if I click on them, a "?" pops up for all of them!

    Copy the Library over manually.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
