Transferring files from mac to mac on snow leopard

I have a white macbook with snow leopard, i have purchased a new aluminum macbook with leopard. upgraded the new one to snow leopard and now want to transfer files (music, photos, settings, apps etc) from mac to mac.
I was using migrant assistant, after completion it it transferred a small portion of photos about 10%, and thats it. I was using an ethernet cable to connect them together. none of my settings or documents transferred either. Is this the only way to complete this transfer and if so, has anyone got any tips or had this problem?
Otherwise I'm looking at using a memory stick and doing it the long way.
thanks

greetings gary !
you could connect your Macs by firewire cable and start up the white MB in target disk mode. this will probably be the fastest way.
as for your music, suggest you drag & drop your entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) to the proper location on the alu Mac (replacing the iTunes folder in that location - which, i assume, is void of content at the moment). launch iTunes and you should find everything as you were used to on the white MB.
alternatively, if you have a suitably sized iPod, you could use that. click here for instructions.
for everything else, check this user tip about where important data is stored (one correction to this link:
ical data is stored in ~/library/calendars).

  • How do I transfer files from mac with snow leopard to a new retina display mac

What is the easiest way to transfer files from my old mac(2008) snow leopard to my new retina display mac book pro?

Easiest? Well there is some sort of wireless transfer thing, but I hear it takes FOREVER like several days and it's glitchy.
The Retina doesn't have a Firewire port I believe, so Target Disk Mode is out, unless you have a adapter and I don't know how well that will work out. Cost another $30 for the adpatper I bet.
    The likely most easiest?
Run down to any computer or office store and pickup a powered external USB hard drive that's the same size or larger then the old Mac's boot drive.
Boot the old Mac and download Carbon Copy Cloner.
(or use the TimeMachine if it asks, but it takes a reallly long time and if there are problems, then it's harder to recover files from)
Format the external drive in Disk Utility with Partition: option GUID and OS X Extended Journaled (default setting)
Use CCC to clone OLD A boot drive to External Drive B, takes about a few hours depending how much stuff you have.
Hook up drive to new Mac, (either clone or TimeMachine drive)
Use the free Migration Assistant in your Application Utility folder to transfer over, but creates a new user account (you can later delete one)
Or if you haven't set up the new Mac yet, when you do set it up during that process, you can transfer from the External Drive B and it won't have the account you set the machine up with naturally just uses the ones from the clone or TimeMachine drive.
Once your fine and dandy on the new machine, then Disk Utility erase and use the external USB to create either a bootable clone with CCC or a TimeMachine drive for backup.
Since you need a backup drive anyway, this method is better and happens to be reliable and easy.

  • Trouble in transferring files from Mac to flash drive

I can transfer files from my flash drive to my Mac but am having trouble transferring files from the Mac to the flash drive.  I also tried to install the NTSF 3G software as recommended by some people. However, it did not work either. The flash drive could not be mounted after I installed the NTSF software so I ended up uninstalling it. Please help! Thanks.

Why does the flash drive need to be formatted NTFS?
If you have no valid reason for it to be formatted NTFS then reformating might be a simpier solution.

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

  • Needed some help transferring files from Mac to external hard drive

Hey guys, I just needed some urgent help.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified".
So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Sam

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

  • Transferring Files from Mac G3 IDE Drive to 10.6GHz Mac Mini

In attempting to transfer about 3GB of old files from a G3 Tower running OS 8.5, I purchased a hard disk case with an external USB cable and internal 40 pin connector for the IDE drive. After removing the drive from the G3 and installing in the new case, it powers up and runs iin a seemingly normal way; however, my Mac mini, running OS 10.4.11 fails to mount it. When I open the System Profiler, it appears that the computer recognizes the drive; however, none of the utilities, including "Disk Utility" and "Migration Assistant," will mount or recognize the external IDE HD. Is the problem a missing driver or other OSX software, or am I simply trying to accomplish the impossible with this gambit? Thanks to anyone who can point me toward a solution.

Thanks. My typo: that was supposed to be "1.6GHz Mini." As suggested, I attempted to network (ethernet) the G3 to my PowerBook Pro laptop (OS 10.5.8)(see separate post), and the network recognizes the two computers, but I'm not able to establish a connection and thereby share files, What am I missing? Again, thanks!

  • Transferring files from Mac OS 9.2.2 to external hardrive, then to new iMac

Please bear with my lack of computer vernacular, I have loads of graphics and photos on Zip disk storage. I want to buy a new computer, however I can not figure out if I should buy a external hard disk first, store all my zip files onto this external hard drive, will I be able to access this external hard drive with a new iMac? The serial ports I believe they are called, are not the same on my older Mac OS 9.2.2 as the newer Macs. I guess this is my question not to be redundant, how can I get all my files from my zip disks, so I can now save them on CD's or DVD's, from a newer version of Mac?

The best solution will be for you to set up a LAN or local area network with ethernet. The best web page to date is this one:

  • Exporting files from Final Cut Pro in Snow Leopard

I am using Final Cut Studio 2. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Before the upgrade when I would export files from Final Cut the dialog box would automatically go to the last used folder location. Now, each time it goes to the system hard drive. Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks

    Fix what?
Just choose the correct folder to which to export.

  • Transferring Data from Lion Beta back to Snow Leopard

Hey guys so when lion developer preview 4 came out i partitioned my hard drive already running snow leopard and then installed it on the new hard drive. I have been using it since it came out so have accumulated a lot of movies, songs, programs, etc. that are not on my Snow Leopard hard drive. When the final lion comes out I want to update it from the snow leopard one and erase the DP4 hard drive. Is there any way to get all the new info. from the DP4 partition to the Snow Leopard partition? I have tried migration assistant and that says i cant because the other hard drive has a new OS (Lion). So I guess i could wait until i download the final one from the app store but will migration assistant transfer all my new stuff (movies, programs, etc.)?? Thanks in advance.

  • Transferring Files from Mac HD to Bootcamp

How do I transfer large files, up to 30gb from my Mac HD to my windows portion on bootcamp?

It is slow read/write to/from the same hard drive but doable.
So you tried and failed or didn't even try?
Apple added ability to Boot Camp to read HFS from Windows.
Mac OS can write to a FAT formatted Windows.
I would have opted for NTFS, for Windows 7, and to use an external drive for sharing files.
There are better commercial products to read/write NTFS and HFS for both.

  • Help with transferring files from mac to (not my own) HDD; meaning format then copy is impossible

I need to transfer files and folders from my macbook air to my boss's external HDD but I keep getting error messages. Anyone out there, please help me. Most of the answers here kept saying erase data then copy; not possible for me because this HDD isn't mine. Thanks.

What is the format of that external HDD?  If it is formatted NTFS, you can read but not write to it.  You would have to install a third party application such as Paragon or Tuxera.
    Ciao.

  • Transferring files from Mac to shared drive shows different sizes?

I'm currently using a router with DD-WRT to share out media files in my house.  However, it requires NTFS or EXT2/3 which is more difficult to format and will not recognize native formats beyond that.  The current external drive is NTFS.
The interesting thing is that many files that I've transferred below 4GB's appear fine when streaming them.  However, files that I've transferred above 4GB's seem to either get compressed or truncated in some way.
    Anyone know what's going on?

Why does the flash drive need to be formatted NTFS?
