Transferring Files is a Pain, WHY?
I cant tell you the amount of PAIN I have been thru trying to transfer files from Desktop to PC today; OMG I swear I want to throw this Samsung Device against the wall!
Shall we start before i got a samsung device? Sure why not
Motorola Droid Razr, take my Charging USB cable, put at end of Device, hook USB to computer...OMGOSH lookie I have full access to all files from Phone and Card via the MY COMPUTER; the cell phone acted as an external storage
May 23rd 2013...at some point after owning the device for the first time I hooked up my Cell Phone to my computer via the USB cable and I believe I had full access, YAY happy day
I tried accessing it again but it failed
So same day I decided to install the software that the Installer is asking me...took a good 30+ minutes to be fully installed, sheesh! But I think it worked
After using it, I decided to un install the software I just installed; thinking nahhhhh dont need it right?
Few months down the road I decided to hook up cell phone again; still didnt connect so I think at this point I was "referred" to downloading a USB Device Driver for my Samsung, so I downloaded it but installation......OMGOSH it took 30minutes + THIRTY MINUTES TO INSTALL After rebooting PC I think i was fine
Today I decided to hook it up again and let me tell you......oh mannnnnnn
First off I did NOT un install the driver software from the last time
I called Verizon tech support and ya know what the guy told me? Seeing as he owned a Note 2 he said that Samsung dont deal with Plug and Play,....you have to download software to transfer files such as KIES....keep in mind I believe I had talked to Verizon reps twice before and neither said I HAD TO HAVE KIES!! So I asked if there was any other way...phone call got disconnected
I downloaded KIES3 off of Samsungs website Kies 3 because I have 4.3 OS
But after installation and hooking up my USB to my cell phone it wouldnt detect it; nada
LOL I'm seriously forgetting what happened next....seriously.....
Something along the lines that I ended up re downloading the USB drivers software again...this timed I counted the time....37 minutes....THIRTY SEVEN MINUTES for the USB Driver software to install
I launched KIES 3 and still no go
Samsung Agent tells me to un install KIES 3, reboot PC and re install KIES 3 and reboot PC and that I dont need a USB driver for it
So I did what Agent said...and it worked! Actually after it launched, it installed some USB driver...then Windows Update said I needed a new driver, so after downloading the new driver it took a good 20minutes + before i got my desktop again....uggghhhh
And after re hooking my Cell Phone Up after Windows Update and after I ate dinner I had the same problem AGAIN!!!
I thought...OMGosh am I having to un install, reboot re install reboot PC every time?
I finally got it going because as I clicked Music I just didnt wait long enough for it to load all the files which was part of my problem. But again I disconnected it and tried reconnecting because the files really didnt transfer over and it still couldnt find device.
Agent says...switch USB ports...so I did and VOILA it worked. So I kept the USB plugged into that port and just unhooked cell phone after transferring over the files I needed....played with cell phone and re hooked phone up one last time to transfer over the remaining files...and guess what??
YEP didnt detect
Switched USB Ports....didnt detect
Switched USB Ports...finally detected.
And after all my .WMA file converting to .MP3 and I copied the last file over....I am done!!!
But I ask the community......WHY IS THIS SUCH A PAIN??!?!
Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2, 64 BIT OS
Samsung Galaxy S4, 4.3 OS
1- Your operating system is the worst out there being its Windows Vista.
LOL yeah I know my OS is a bit outdated. When I do upgrade though it will be Windows 7
2- Do you have broadband? Or Dial up? it should not average 30 minutes to get a driver update.
Hmm. I have DSL downloading the 30mb file was easy...it was the installation that took forever. I double clicked the .exe, I chose next and next or what not and the progress portion was the part that took 37 minutes; not the downloading. And then when I looked under the Program Files under Control Panel (add/remove) I see that its just a simple 47mb file hehe
3- You never should have removed the first driver downloaded. It confuses your system.
So yeah I guess I am hoping someone can help me remove all entries of this perhaps start from scratch? I'm a pretty computer savy guy. I'm familiar with MSCONFIG, and REGEDIT. So aside from using Revo Un Installer to do a deep clean, perhaps theres other things Im forgetting so it can be a clean slate. Heres the weird thing...why have I been directed to Samsungs Website to download a driver and then the KIES 3 installs some driver and Windows Update tells me to download/install a driver for the same USB thing that apparently was published a year ago?
4- Switching USB ports normally fixes the connection issues as you found out.
LOL True...but heres another thing...so I believe my Motherboard has 4 USB Ports...I own a PC Monitor that ironically enough has 2 ports on the side.....so I try Monitor first...then went to the back. I believe from my above post...I had to switch ports up to 3 times....Tried Monitor forever...didnt work...Agent says try a different port so I tried one in the back of my Desktop...kept it plugged in then when I needed it again; it didnt work....I switched with another port in the back...no dice...another port in the back...no dice...went back to the Monitor and it worked.
Oh and as far as the Micro SD card? Perhaps that might be the issue? But I'm kinda cheap at the moment so perhaps I'd like to get feedback. I'm sure I have probably had this SD card for well over 2-3yrs. I had this SD even from my previous phone of a Motorola Droid Razr...so yeah sounds about right. So maybe I need a new card? Perhaps one formatted by Samsung's Device itself?
And I do have a card reader...I just have to find it.
So prior to buying a new SD card I definitely will take SD card out and use my adapter FIRST and then will convey results....just not for a while LOL
I usually do it on my days off from work and my next day off is next Friday

right forum? first time here. none of the options seem perfect. so i guess this applies to 'setup.' i tried to describe what's happening verbosely from the start of a file transfer to completion of writing file to 2nd hard drive.
win 7 64bit home - i2600k 3.4ghz - 8gb of ram - 2hdd 1 ssd
I have this problem when transferring files between 2 internal hard drives. one is unhealthy (slow write speeds but not looking for advice to replace it because it serves its unimportant purpose). so, the unhealthy drive drops into PIO mode - that's acceptable.
however, a little over 1gb of any file transfer is cached in RAM during the file transfer. after the file transfer window closes, indicating the transfer is "complete" (HA!), it still has 1gb to write from RAM which takes about 30minutes. This would
not be a problem if it did not also earmark an additional 5gb of ram (never in use), leaving 1gb or less 'free' for programs. this needlessly causes my pc to be sluggish - moreso than a typical file transfer file between 2 healthy drives. i have windows write
caching turned off on all drives. so this is a different setting i can't figure out nor find after 2 hours of google searches.
info from taskmanager and resource monitor.
idle estimates: total 8175, cached 532, available 7218, free 6771 and the graph in taskman shows about 1gb memory in use.
at the start of a file transfer: 8175, 2661, 6070, 4511free and ~2gb of ram used in graph. No problems, yet.
however, as the transfer goes on, the free ram value drops to less than 1gb (1gb normal +1gb temporary transfer cache +5gb of unused earmarked space = ~7gb), cached value increases, but the amount of used ram remains relatively unchanged (2gb
during transfer and slowly drops to idle values as remaining bits are written to the 2nd hard drive). the free value is even slower to return to idle norms after the transfer completes writing data to 2nd hard drive from RAM. so, it's earmarking an addition
5gb of ram that are completely unused during this process. *****This is my problem*****
Is there any way to turn this function off or limit its maximum size. in addition to sluggishness, it poses risk to data integrity from system errors/power loss, and it's difficult to discern the actual time of transfer completion, which makes it difficult
to know when it's safe to shutdown my pc (any data left in ram is lost, and the file transfer is ruined - as of now i have to use resmon and look through what's writing to disk2 -> sometimes easy to forget about it when the transfer window closed 20-30minutes
ago and the file is still in the process of writing to the 2nd disk).
Any solution would be nice, and a little extra info like whether it can be applied to only 1 hard drive would be excellent. Thanks for the reply.
(Although i have an undergrad degeee in computers, it's been 15years and my vocab is terrible. so, i will try my best. keep an open mind. it's not my occupation, so i rarely have to communicate ideas regarding PCs)
It operates the same way regardless of the write-cache option being enabled. It's not using the 5gb for read/write buffer - it's merely bloating standby memory during the transfer process at a rate similar to the write speed of destination (for my situation).
at this point i don't expect a solution. i've tried to look through lists of known memory leaks but i dont have the vocabulary to be 100% certain this problem is not documented. as of now it can't affect many people - NAS's with low bandwidth networks, usb
attached storage etc. do bugs get forwarded from these forums? below i can outline the consistent and repeatable nature not only on my pc but on others' pcs as well (2012 forum post i found).
I've been testing and paying a little more attention and i can describe it better:
Just the Facts
Resmon Memory Info: "In Use" stays consistent ~1gb (idle amount and roughly the same when nothing else is running during file transfer)
"Modified" contains file transfer
data (meta data?) which remains consistent at little over 1gb (minor fluctuations due to working as a buffer). After the file transfer window closes "Modified" slowly diminishes as it finishes lazy writing (i believe that's the term). I forget idle
pc amount, but after transfer this is ony 58mb)
"Standby" as the transfer starts it immediately rises to ~2gb. I'm sure this initial jump is normal. However, it will bloat well over 5gb over time with a large enough transfer increasing at a consistent rate during the entire transfer
process. the crux of the matter.
"Free" will drop as far as 35-50megabytes over time.
as the transfer starts, the "Standby" increases by an immediate chunk then at a slow rate throughout entire transfer process(~1mb/s). once writing metadata to RAM no longer occurs, the "Modified" ram slowly (@500kb/s matching resmon disk
activity for that file write) diminishes as it finishes lazy writing, After file is 100% written to destination drive, "Standby" remains a bloated figure long after.
a 1.4gb transfer filled 3677MB of "Standby" by the time writing finished and modified ram cleared. after 20minutes, it's still bloated at 3696MB. after 30-40mins it's down to 2300mb - this is about what it jumps immediately to when transfer starts
- it now remains at this level until i reboot.
I notice the "standby" is available to programs. but they do not operate well. e.g. a 480p trailer on IMDB.com will stop-and-go every 2-3seconds (stream buffers fine/fast) - this would be during the worst case scenario of 35-50mb "Free"
ram. my pc isn't and never was the latest and greatest, but choppy video never happens even with 1 or 2 resource hogs running (video processing/encoding, games, etc).
Conjecture Below
i think it's a problem when one device is significantly slower at writing than the source device - this is the factor that i share with others having this problem. when data is written to modified ram then sent to destination, standby memory is expanded
until it completely or nearly fills all available RAM - If the transfer size is large enough relative to how slow the write speed of destination device is. otherwise it fills it up as much as the file size/write speed issue allows. the term "memory leak"
is used below but may not technically be one, but it's an apt description in layman's terms.
i saw a similar post in these forums (link at end). My problem is repeatable and consistent with others' reports. I wasn't sure if i should revive it with a reply. some of these online message boards (maybe not this one) are extremely picky
and sensitive, lol.the world will end if an old thread revives - even if for a good reason.
i can answer some of the ancillary issues. one person (Friday, September 21, 2012 8:33 PM) mentions not being able to shutdown, i asume he means stuck on the shutdown screen - this is because lazy writing has not completed - his nas write speed is significantly
slower than reading from source - the last bits of data left in ram still needs to be writen to the destination. shutdown will stall for as long as needed until the data finishes writing to destination to prevent data loss.
another person (Monday, September 24, 2012 6:31 PM) mentions the rate of the leak, but the rate is more likely a function of read speed from source relative to write speed of destination. which explains why my standby expands closer to a 1:1 ratio compared
to his 1:100 (he said 10mb per 1000mb)
we all have the same exact results/behaviour, but slightly different rates of bloating/leaking. as the file is written from from the ram to the destination, standby increases during this time - not a problem if read and write speeds are roughly equal (unless
your transfering a terabytes then i bet the problem could rear its head). when writing lags, it gives the opportunity for standby ram to bloat with no maximum except the amount of installed ram. slower the write speed, the worse the problem.
The reply on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 3:04 AM has before and after pictures of exactly what i described in
"Just the Facts". Specifically the resmon image showing the Memory Tab.
The kb2647452 hotfix seems to do some weird things relative to this problem. in the posts that mention they've applied it: after file completes it looks like the "standby" bloat is now "in use" bloat. as per info from Tuesday, October
09, 2012 10:36 PM - bobmtl in an earlier post applies the patch. compare images from earlier posts to his post on this date. seems like a worse problem. Also, his process list indicates it's very unlikely they add up to ~4gb as listed in the color coded bar.
wheres the extra gb's coming from? likely the same culprit of what filled up "standby" memory for me and others. it looks like this patch relative to this problem merely recategorizes the bloat - just changes the title it falls under.

Trouble in transferring files from Mac to flash drive
I can transfer files from my flash drive to my Mac but am having trouble transferring files from the Mac to the flash drive. I also tried to install the NTSF 3G software as recommended by some people. However, it did not work either. The flash drive could not be mounted after I installed the NTSF software so I ended up uninstalling it. Please help! Thanks.
Why does the flash drive need to be formatted NTFS?
If you have no valid reason for it to be formatted NTFS then reformating might be a simpier solution.

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.
How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists. -
MDD freezes when transferring files to new Hard Drive.
I am using a G4 MDD Dual Processor Tower with 1 GB DDR SDRAM, Dual 1 GHz and an 80 GB hard Drive on an ATA/100 controller, using a cable select cable (OEM). I just installed an additional PATA Western Digital WES-WD3200JB 320 GB hard drive. Both drives are on the ATA/100 and on Cable Select mode. The 80GB hard drive (which has the system installed on it) was originally installed in the slave position (and still is). I zeroed the drive and did a PRAM reset before I partitioned and formatted the drive.
I have had freeze up troubles when I try to transfer files from the old 80GB Hard Drive to this new 320 GB one. I have tried transferring files from a DVD to this new Hard Drive without a problem. I have tried transferring that same load of files from the new Hard Drive to the old one without a problem. The only time it seems to freeze up is when I try to transfer a large number of files from the old Hard Drive to the new one. The problem doesn’t occur with large files, just with a large number of files. For example, I have transferred a single 917MB file without a problem, but when I try to transfer a folder that has 158 items totaling 38.6 MB, that is when my computer freezes up. However, I have frequently transferred folders containing a few (under 20) files that are under 5 MB without a problem.
I have considered putting the new drive on the ATA-66 controller instead of the ATA-100 (as several Apple forum posts recommend), but I would rather figure out why the freeze up occurs in only this specific set of circumstances.
Any theories on what is causing this freeze up, or suggestions on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!ATA doesn't share a bus very nicely, you can always put the WD 320 over to ATA/100 or do that now, but yes, isolate them.
You may have directory problem or bad sectors, so eliminating that would be another step.
Some people even recommend zeroing a new drive right off the bat.
PATA should not have the problems of SATA, but you might want to look into whether this drive has come up in other problems. OWC includes it in one of the FW cases also.
And you could move your OEM to FW case, can't imagine continuing to use the OEM drive at this point (they were slow and had only 2MB cache then, I use mine for an emergency FW backup system). -
We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac. These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's. When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access. The files that work properly don't have that configuration. I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it. We're all using PC's and they get the Error: Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar. I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions. I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files. Thanks for a solution!!
Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Question about transferring files from a Mac
Hi there!
I want to ask about the new iPad mini (and or the iPad 3) especially with transferring files from a Mac.
I normally just do the "normal" way of transferring files (.doc files, .mp3 files or .mp4 video files) i.e. via the USB port of my Mac. But is there a faster, easier and a wireless way to do it?
Please advice.
Thanks.onslaught wrote:
I couldn't find Dropbox on the Mac App Store but i could find Dropcopy in there.
Stupid question: will i need to also install Dropcopy on my iPad 3/iPad mini in order for my files to be transferred?
Yes, it will need to,install it on any machine you wish to use it on.
also, you should spend some time on the Drobbox website to see how it works. You won't find it in the Mac App Store, but can still easily using it on a Mac. -
For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
Thanks in advance. To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC -
I got a new pc, transferred files, and lost about 2/3 of my library. Also lost all playlists. I have a good amount on my iPod but can't transfer. What happened to my music?
iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer. -
I am having trouble transferring files from an old MacBook (2007) to a MacBook Air over a wireless network. The connection was interrupted and the time was over 24 hours. Is there a better way to do this? I'm using Migration assistant. The lack of an ethernet port on MacBook air does not help.

How do I merge transfered files from a PC to my new Mac
I recently transfered files from a PC to my Mac but they did not merge with the existing Mac files but ended in a different location under a separate password access. How do I merge these new files with the existing Mac files?
Try to simply copy the files and past them at the location of your Mac files.... you will be notified of duplicate files.
From here you can click "Keep Both", "Stop" or "Replace"
Click on "Replace"
*****WARNING*******
This process will NOT look at which file is newer of the two, it will simply replace one file for the other so MAKE SURE you are not replace the new files with old once. -
External hard drive problem, error when transferring files
My old imac special edition started acting weird and the screen was bad anyway, so I bought a mad dog fire wire enclosure and put the 80 gig drive in it and attached it to my FP imac 800. The problem is that I didn't know that it would only act as a storage device and not be able to open up any of the programs that are installed on it, so I have some shifting around to do so that I can get all my programs installed on the imac so that the files on the external drive will work. I have transfered files from the external drive to the imac no problem, but today I tried several times to transfer files from the imac to the external drive, which I have to do to clear up some space before I can do anything else, and it wont let me. It keeps saying error code -51. What can I do to get this to work?
FP iMac 800 Mac OS X (10.2.x)There are differences in external volumes, how they were setup, and which Macs they will work on. So much for keeping things simple.
If I remember right, you can't use or have limited use of HFS+ drives on external firewire. On an Intel Mac, it has to be setup using gpt. You can do this using Disk Utility, there is a new option for this.
I had a link that went to macfixit, but the content is now blocked. If I can scare it up again, I will post it back here. -
Mac Mini Mid 2011 General system slowdown when transferring files?
Hi i have a stock mac mini mid 2011, 2.5ghz i5, 4gb ram, 500gb HDD os 10.7.1 and i've noticed a general system slowdown when transferring files on 10.7 and the last 10.7.1 update ( from usb to hdd, another computer on my local network to the mini, external dvd to the mini, etc).
I could describe the slowdown as mouse pointer movement suffers, its "laggy", application take longer to start, even menus in them from appearing, writting something on the keyboard i have to wait like 5 - 10 seconds so the words start appearing in the app (i.e. textedit).
I wanted to know if any other new mac mini owner has had this issue and if there is any solution to this(that would not involve buying a SSD for example)?
Im not really sure if this is a hardware or system issue but it really is getting on my nerves(i know i could just wait for the files to transfer which is what i do now but i dont think that should be), since i also have a old macbook from 2007 2.0ghz c2d, 2gb ram, 250gb HDD os 10.6.8 and have never had this problem before.
Thanks in advanced.
Let me know if i need to give more info on this subject.
Edit: I forgot to mention, the funny thing is doing a time machine backup to my external HDD or transferring files from my HDD to a usb doesnt give me any kind of slowdown.Hi Rick, I'd see if it's reated to this, which has many symptoms...
Try this: "sudo pmset autopoweroff 0" and "sudo pmset standby 0"

I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac and from Mac to Mac
I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac, and from Mac to Mac. PC to PC is fine. Nothing but problems with the Mac. One example:
While working on my PC, I open shared folders on an external HDD connected to the Mac. I click on paste to move the files. I get an error after a few seconds to a minute of trying to move several files from my PC Win 7 to Mac OS Maverick, that there is a file already at the destination on Mac. This statement is true, but it was just put there because I am copying them over in that same action. It reads 0Kb and wasn't there before I started. Then I get an error: The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again..
Whether I click on it a bunch right of way or wait, it still takes about 45 seconds. I have to do it with every file and it only happens when copying from a PC to Mac. I have even restarted both computers so nothing is using any files. If I copy one file at a time, I don't get any error.
So I have one file to move, no problem. If move 5 files, The first will go fine, but it shows all 5 files in folder at once. All other files than the first show 0kb. I get the file already existing error once it starts the second file transfer, and I select move and replace. Then I get The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program. I wait or click repeatedly until it starts to move file. That file will then show something other than 0kb. When it is done, the error process starts all over. I tried checking the PC with unlocker, but the files do not show themselves locked on the PC.Its not only French. Even certain characters in English will come across as gobblydegook from 1 platform to another. I see this in emails that likely were composed in Word & the characters don't come across.
Not sure if this is still true, but years ago someone explained that there is a standard character set & then I think its extended characters & those vary from platform to platform or language to language, etc.
