Transferring files off dead Macbook Air

So I'm currently working on this persons' Macbook Air, and as far as I can see, the HDD s totally dead (DiskWarrior can't even do anything), but aside from the fact that it's practivally dead, I can't seem to find a way to get the files off of the HDD, though I can clearly see that they are still intact in Single User Mode.
Does anybody have any advice for getting the files off of this computer?  It's a ~2009 Macbook Air with a ZIF HDD, so a SATA dock is out of the question >.>
Thanks Guys.

can try data recovery service to retrieve the data, some apple service providers offer this service for a fee
if you have access to another mac you can also try target disk mode to get the data off the old mac, this article tells how to do that:

hopefully one of these 2 options works for you

  • Can I retrieve files off my MacBook Air that has crashed (White screen flashing folder)?

Besides a few freezes here and there, my MacBook Air has worked fine. However when I opened it the other day, It wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button a few times, and it finally powered on with a completely white screen. I powered it off and on a few times but nothing changed. I figured if I let the battery die, maybe it would work when I charged it again. I left the screen open, but after 10 min, a flashing folder with a question mark popped up, And it's been flashing ever sense. I took it to apple, they said it was a software issue. They plugged it into a g-drive to reinstall, along with other cords and got their apple account up, although none of my information showed up. They said the Mac forgot its software, and nothing of mine would show. They said I have to replace the lap top and gave me prices/options. I never got my question fully answered on if I can retrieve my photos, notes, garage band, music, etc. I left apple with out any trade. Does anyone know of any way I can get my pictures, music, voice memos, and notes, back? I'm desperate and have lots of important stuff that I can't access. I'm also losing work not having access to my computer. But I'm not trading it in until I try/or know there is no way to get my stuff back. I will pay anything to get my stuff back! I honestly would rather have my stuff then the computer. And just get a new one. Any advice will help. Thanks!

Can mean that your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Try restarting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If the disk is not available, then it's failing or has failed.
If you did not backup your important files, an alternative would be data recovery but it's expensive.

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

  • The storage/removal of files from my MacBook Air as they pertain to a Keynote Presentation

A question about the storage/removal of files from my MacBook Air as they pertain to a Keynote Presentation.
I have a rather sizeable Keynote (about 7GB) since it has several QT Movies embedded.  And the key word is embedded:  if I was to remove the “original” QT files and other large graphics off the HD (in an effort to regain some space on the 250GB onboard flash drive) and in Keynote Preferences I have checked “copy audio and movies into document” then the Keynote presentation remains intact and does NOT need any of those QT files living on the MBAir itself.  I could keep them on a separate dedicated FW drive for future inclusion and/or editing.
That is – the Keynote presentation will stand as its own complete file and does not need to reference those files sitting on the HD in order to work as they have been copied into the Keynote presentation itself (and hence their propagation is what is also accounting for the disc space concern).
I am concerned that if I remove the files then the slides that do require QT won’t be able to “find” the files…..but I am working under the assumption that the above steps have ensured that they are integrated into the actual presentation file and do not need to “find” them on the HD.  Make sense?
    Thanks

Great!  Thanks so much for the quick reply, Gary  Much appreciated.

  • Dead MacBook Air

    Hi all,
I have a client with a dead MacBook Air that I've tried nearly everything I can think of to resurrect it without any success. Maybe someone here has a suggestion on something else to try.
    Scenario:
MacBook Air running 10.5.8. No peripherals attached.
    1. The power adapter is attached and the LED glows green so it appears to be charging well.
    2. When pressing the power button the computer makes a faint noise, like the fan starts to spin. The LED on the front edge glows solid for about 1 second, then blinks rapidly 9 times. Then the LED goes out for about 1 second, and comes back on steady for as long as the power button is held. At the moment, that's all the computer does.
    Things I have tried:
    1. Holding C key on power-up to boot from OS X install CD.
    2. Holding Option key on power-up to boot into Safe Mode.
    3. Holding Command-Control-P-R to rese PRAM on power-up.
    4. Holding (Left side of keyboard) Shift-Control-Option plus Power button to reset SMC. Then pressing power button after 5 seconds.
When trying each of these methods the exact same thing happens as described above, a slight noise, 9 blinks of the sleep light etc.
The client has very sensitive data on the SSD and doesn't want to send the computer in for repair, but I've about out of suggestions on what to do.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks,

I had similar problem, brought a refurb. Had to be sent in for repair. Turns out needed a new Logic board, fortunately I was still under warranty. Call AppleCare or bring to Genius Bar. Good luck.

  • The hidden files on my macbook air keep showing up!

The hidden files on my macbook air keep showing up! I use different methodes to hide them, but every time, out of the blue, all those horrible 'windows like' .docs show up. I used Paralles 5 (have deleted it - no change), even updated to Lion, no change.. Deleted MacFuse.. no change... I suspected ThinkerTool, but also that one is gone...  Files most of the time show as soon as I open a desktop folder... HELP anyone??

    Dear People,
After month I'm still struggeling. Like I said, it is not just a replace True with False sollution. When I hide the 'hidden files' and I copy a file to my desktop, the screen flashes and boom... there are my hidden files again.
I can keep on hiding them, but they will keep showing up.... what to do?

  • I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this? Thanks.

I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this?
Do I drag and drop the iPhoto files or should I use a Thunderbolt cable?
    Thanks.

Connect the two Mac via a LAN or FW cable and Target Disk Mode and copy the iPhoto Library package from your iMac to your  Pictures folder on MBA. All it takes is a drag and drop no matter how you connect the two Macs.
If you have an external HD copy the library to it and reconnect to the MBA and copy again.
If you have a library already on your MBA and it has photos you want to save then rename it before the copy.

  • Finding extended 'Elements 12' file on Apple Macbook Air

I have 'Elements 12 working o.k.  I must find this extended Elements 12 file, on my MacBook Air:  Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/SupportFiles/Plug-ins.
(I need this to copy a special 'sharpening' program ('Focus Magic') that I downloaded. How do I find this file???

I'm not sure what you mean about "extended", but click once on your desktop and press command+shift+A and that should open the applications folder. Look for the Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 folder in there, then the support files folder inside that and the plugins folder inside the Support Files folder.

  • Cannot xfer files to across MacBook Air

I am working with very large .mov files from a movie camera.  The files record from the camera onto a SanDisk 480 GB SSD.  I have a MacBook Air 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB RAM.  Running OSX 10.9.4.  I have a WD My Book 4 TB HD.  Since I'm filming out in the middle of nowhere, this is my only option for dumping a huge movie file (420 GB) in order to keep filming.  It is a single file (1 hr long video).  I reformatted the WD My Book for Mac.
However, when I try to drag and drop the .mov file from the SSD to the My Book, I get the error: "The item “blahblah.mov” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format"
After poking through some old threads, I didn't find any that referred to using the MacBook as just the transferring power between an SSD to an external HD.  Please help.  It is currently formatted so MS-DOS (FAT32).  When I try to Erase the drive to switch to Mac OS (Extended), I get an error that the drive cannot be unmounted.  To make things more delicious, the WD website will not load (thus, coming to an Apple forum).

Here's what you need to do with the drive to fix the format. You cannot copy files larger than 2GBs to a FAT formatted drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you continue having the unmount error try doing the above booted from the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility from there. First, though, eject the drive before rebooting. Plug it in after the startup.

  • How can I move AVCHD files from my MacBook Air to my Mac Pro?

While on the road, I will be putting my AVCHD video on my MacBook Air. This will free up space on the SD card and enable me to export clips to iWeb, etc. But when I get back to my desk, I'll want to put all of that AVCHD content onto my Mac Pro for more thorough editing and long term storage. What is the best way to move the unedited AVCHD files (events) from one computer to the other?

    Jim,
There's a few ways you can do this but here's a method thats simple which also provides you with a backup of the movies contained on your SD card.
Try creating a disk image from your SDHC card from your Cam. You'll need an SD card reader and when you connect to your MBA you can create a .dmg file from disk utility.
Once you've done that you can launch imovie and then double click on your .dmg and imovie will prompt you if you want to add the movies to your library.
When you get back home you can follow the same procedure by copying over your .dmg. No need to export from imovie on your MBA to your MP. The added benefit is that you have a complete backup of your SDHC card in the .dmg which you can backup to DVD.
    Hope this helps.
