Transferring files, settings and software from old ibook G4 to new macbook

Hi all,
How do I boot up my brand new macbook (for the first time) and transfer all of my software, preference settings and files from my old IBOOK G4? Also, the Ibook has OS X 3.9 running and the new Macbook will obviously have a newer version. I don't want to lose/overwrite the OS version on the newer macbook.
Will I have any difficulty with my Adobe Creative Suite, Macromedia Flash or Dreamweaver in the move? Will all other preference settings and files be moved automatically? Will Itunes transfer all my music and video files automatically?

Hook the two machines up with a FireWire cable and then turn on the MacBook. Next, use the Migration Assistant to migrate your account from the iBook to the MacBook. Migrating items other than user accounts and their associated home folders may result in slow performance on the MacBook. You will be given the option to use the Migration Assistant when you first turn on the MacBook, and it can be run later by launching it from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • Hello, I have transferred my Acrobat XI Pro from old MAC to the new one. After the transfer can not open any PDF file. Any idea how to solve this?

Hello, I have transferred my Acrobat XI Pro from old MAC to the new one. After the transfer can not open any PDF file. Any idea how to solve this?

    Hey ilyaz20360341,
Could you please specify how exactly did you transfer Acrobat from one MAC to other.
You might need to deactivate the software from your old machine and then activate it on the new one with the same serial number (for Acrobat license) or Adobe credentials (for Acrobat subscription).
If you have done the same way, then let me know if you are able to open Acrobat itself.
Do you get any specific error message while opening a PDF?
    Hope to get your response.
    Regards,
    Anubha

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

How do I back up the calendar and contacts from my iPhone5 to my new macbook pro(10.8.3)? I have backed up the phone, but it does not transfer the calendar or the contacts. If I check them in the sync area and then back up the phone again will they transfer or be erased? I am a bit gun shy since my previous macbook pro committed suicide and I lost a ton of info there.

Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer.

  • How do I migrate my albums from old mac to my new macbook?

How do I migrate my albums from old mac to my new macbook? The photos are already migrated, but I've lost all the old groupings in the albums and I don't want to manually re-group the thousands of photos!!!

I was using version 6.0.6 of iPhoto.
My issue is that I already have sorted the photos into Albums - about 50 of them. And now on my new computer I can't see any of the albums I had sorted them into, and I don't want to have to recreate all those Albums!  That was one of the primary reasons I stuck with Apple when I upgraded. Had I known it wouldn't bring the albums over, I probably wouldn't have bought another apple.
Is there any way to get all the work I've already done in organising my photos onto my new computer? Thanks for your help.

  • Transfering files, settings, and everything else.

this is a pretty cut&dry question i suppose.
I'm planning on upgrading to a 24" iMac in the coming month. (Or should I wait until the new ones are announced? :P) I'm currently on my MacBook and was wondering if I'll be able to clone my MacBook onto the new iMac. I'll still use the MacBook for some stuff it's just that it's currently hooked up to my external drive and holds all my info and is used as if it's my desktop computer. I needed to get a new desktop and free this thing finally. It's an Intel based MacBook and I've upgraded to Leopard (got it as tiger) so I guess it shouldn't be a bother in that respect. I just want all programs, settings, and files/file locations/drives to be exactly as if I'm on here, when I'm all moved into my new iMac.
Will Setup Assistant accomplish all this? And what is the recommended hookup for fastest, safest transfers? Firewire? USB? Ethernet? or even using my Airport and local internet connection to setup a temporary network?

There is not so much worry when both Macs are Intel. The concern is when you try to migrate from a PowerPC Mac to Intel, which is the purpose of Kappy's User Tip Guide. That can cause issues if you transfer too much because of the chip and OS code differences. Your MacBook may have parts of the OS active that do not apply to the iMac because of the hardware differences, so cloning may not be the best route to take.
Using Migration Assistant should be very straight forward from the MacBook to the iMac. The setup Assistant will give you that opportunity as you follow the process when you first fire up the new Mac. If you already have the Firewire cable that Geordie mentions that will allow you to progress quickly and not have to run out and buy one. They are good to have on hand as you may need to fix something in the future if you screw something up. We all do occasionally! Something that sounded good on the fly does not always work out too well.

  • Transferring files from my iBook to my new MacBook Pro

So I treated (an understatement) myself to a new MacBook Pro a few days ago after having a few difficulties with my beloved iBook G4. After I damaged the iBook's original power adapter, I managed to buy a dodgy one on eBay, which packed up and left me running on battery power.
I'm expecting my MacBook Pro to arrive any day now and I know that during the setup procedure (of OS 10.3, at least), you're given the option to transfer all your documents across from your previous Mac to a new one via Firewire. Brilliant idea, but my iBook's only got 15 minutes of power left and I have no way to charge it back up for the moment, so I somehow doubt it would hold out for the entirety of the procedure.
Basically, is there a way to launch the file-transfer wizard once Leopard is up and running? I'm paying particular attention to the transfer of all my E-mails from Mail and events from iCal.
On a similar topic, is there any way to sync iCal between the two Macs using iSync?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Kappy has written a helpful guide for PPC to Intel transition, which you can read in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6630396&#6630396
You will still need to use firewire target disk mode, but not the complete migration assistant process (which can be a problem going from PPC to Intel anyway!). Scroll down to step #4, which will tell you exactly which files you really need to transfer over for Mail and iCal.
    Hope this helps...

  • Transferring stuff from an ibook to a new Macbook

    Hi
I'm going to buy a macbook. My girlfriends got an ibook with loads of photos etc. on that I want to transfer over to my new Macbook when I get it, what's the quickest easiest way of doing this?
    Many thanks!
    Jim

    Hi
    Thanks for your quick reply!
Obvious answer to these probably, but I'm assuming first it's not a problem that one computer is registered to one person and the other will be registered to a different person? Second I'm assuming stuff is just copied over and not actually wiped from the original source?
What wire to I need to do this?
    Thanks agains!

  • Transferring my contacts, itunes music, apps, address book, and pics from my iphone to my new MacBook Pro

I bought a new MacBook Pro 4 months ago, had some issues with it, brought it to Best Buy Geek Squad and they   . Now I would like to sync my iphone 4 with my computer. However, when I go to do that a message appears that says the computers current information will transfer to the iphone. Well there isn't anything on my computer and so I am afraid if I follow through with it my iphone will lose everything. I am mainly concerned about my address book, itunes and pictures. Is there any way for me to transfer from the iphone to the MacBook Pro?
My husband also has an iphone. I'd like to be able to also sync itunes with his phone but not the contacts. Any suggestions?

You might want to ask your question in the iPhone forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/iphone/using_iphone.
While all of us here have MacBook Pros, not everyone (including myself!) have an iPhone.
Then again, some MBP/iPhone user may come along with an answer to your question... but I'd post it in the iPhone forum were I you.
    Good luck,

  • Transfer from old hard drive to new MacBook + Antivirus

    Hi,
My trusty iBook G4 finally died on me (Failing to read Logic board) and I am waiting for my replacement MacBook.
My question is: Can I remove the hd from my iBook and set it up in an enclosure and then transfer all my data/ preferences over to my shiny new aluminium MacBook?
Also, any preferences on antivirus software? I have always used symantec but have just read about the range of Intego products.
Any advice on both topics would be most appreciated.

Zlig said, "Hi, you should be able to do this no problem. You can go for an inexpensive USB2 enclosure and use "Migration Assistant" to import your stuff across during setup of the new machine."
No, don't use Migration Assistant from a PPC to an Intel Mac. See Basic Guide to Migrating to Intel Macs here:
