Transferring files to new MacBook Pro - but my internal drive is SCSI

Hello,
I tried to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from my old G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) PowerMac - but it won't start up in Firewire Target Disk mode. I figured out that the internal drive is on the SCSI bus, and it looks like it needs to be on the ATA Bus 0 - is that right?
I don't have a great grasp of these things - so am wondering what you all might suggest I do to transfer files? Is it time to start burning DVD's?
thanks for your help!!!
meghann

Sounds like the boot drive on the G4 is running from a PCI ATA card (which makes the drive appear as a scsi drive). And you're right, running it in FW target mode will not allow the new machine to see it.
(When I last did this, I could connect the old machine with FWT mode (boot drive was connected to the stock ATA channel), but the new machine wouldn't see any drives that were connected via the PCI ATA card.)
I think you'll have to figure out another way to transfer files. You could burn discs, or you could network the two with ethernet. It'd be slow but at least you wouldn't have to baby-sit. I think those are your only options unless you have access to an external drive. Might be worth a purchase.

  • Used Setup Assistant to move files onto new Macbook Pro, but things missing

I followed the prompt and used the back up of my old Macbook from my time capsule to setup my new Macbook pro, and even though my documents seem to be there, my itunes library shows nothing, and my iphoto library is empty as well. I checked all of the boxes. Any idea where I go from here?

On this I'd recommend contacting AppleCare (you have 90 days of free phone support) and they can help you get those libraries over. You can find the phone number in your area using this advice letter:

They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

Click here and follow the instructions, or move them from the old computer. Any movies you've previously rented aren't transferable.

Use an external optical drive such as Apple's USB SuperDrive, or one inside another computer.

Hi! I've got CS3 Design Standard - the actual disks and Software License certificate. It was installed on my laptop which crashed and could therefore not be uninstalled. I have now installed it on my new MacBook Pro, but cannot get it registered with the serial number. Is it because it wasn't uninstalled on the previous laptop? What to do now?? Thx!

Maybe this can help someone else...  I simply had to properly uninstall CS3 and reinstall it again after that.  I think that sorted it!  I also remember having a similar issue with Macs at work a couple of years back.  Not sure whether the same applies to CS5/CS6.  Here's a link on how to properly uninstall CS3 on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS.  I'm on OS X 10.9.2 but it worked just fine.  Remove Creative Suite 3 and CS3 products

i am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty.  Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits.  Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

You can purchase a Mac customized to your preference from the Apple Online Store. It will be manufactured almost immediately, and can be delivered to you in as little as two or three days, depending on your location. You may also choose from a number of Macs available in the Refurbished and Clearance store.
If you want to purchase a Mac and have it immediately, you are limited to what an Apple Retail Store or reseller has in stock.

Eww, thanks for your reply, as it makes good sense, and common sense is practical when you walk into an Apple store.
I guess all the reviews and great specs of the new MB pro's made me want one...
I should probably use my current setup till it is totally outdated or simply is beyond repair.
I could ask Santa Claus for one, but by than, the 2012's will be coming out..:)
Thanks Eww for your reply, IAN....

  • Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend?

Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run the latest Adobe CS package.  Which computer do you recommend for best speed and perfromance?

Depending on the software you'll use - I doubt you'll be an expert on After Effects and use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver like a pro (you may be an exception) - I have a 13" Macbook Pro simply because the 15" lacks the portability of the smaller size - the Retina 15" is alot lighter and if you can afford it - go for it!
I bought the Macbook Pro and replaced the 4GB of RAM with 8GB of RAM and replaced the HDD with an m4 SSD from Crucial. The SSD really makes a difference in app start up speeds, loading times and bootup speeds. The RAM ensures apps operate smoothly and everything is snappy. Since getting an SSD, I would say the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator is vastly improved. I can have both open whilst surfing the web, checking my email and even using Dreamweaver every once in a while. Multitasking is great.
To conclude, depedning on your price range, buying a £999 Macbook Pro and swapping the HDD for an SSD and the 4GB of RAm to 8GB, will ensure better performance than both 15" Models. However, buying a 15" Model and maxing out the specs, would beat the performance of a maxed out 13".
I have a 13" and it runs faster than it was when I first purchased it last year. Photoshop opens in 2/3 seconds and performance is great.
    Hope this helps.
P.S. If you have the money, get the 15" Retina. If not, max out the 13" if you still want portability. Otherwise, get the 15" and max that out if you feel performance is poor.
The reason I say Retina, is because the maxed ram and SSD is already installed and saves alot of hassle aswell as the slimmer design and lighter weight.

  • I tried to run BootCamp on my new macbook pro, but i could not partition because of an apparent bad sector

I tried to run BootCamp on my new macbook pro, but i could not partition because of an apparent bad sector.
I reformatted the macbook, but the mac could not even boot up Mac OS Lion.
As such, I had to go down to my retailer and reinstall Lion.
    What exactly went wrong?

When I tried to bootcamp a few days ago, the partition could not work.
My technician told me that there is a bad sector.
So he reformatted, and Lion disaappeard. There was no O.S at all.
I went down to my retailer just now.
They ran a system check on the RAM, and the HDD.
They did not find any bad sector, and everything was okay.
They reinstalled Lion and now its okay again
But I'm afraid to try and bootcamp again because they same thing might happen?
