Transferring files via Target Mode

Hello,
I just got my Mac Pro and I'm trying to transfer some files and programs from my existing G4... I have heard about using the "Target Mode" to do this, but when I tried no luck. Here's what I attempted to do:
attmept #1. G4 is connected to my display. I booted the G4 holding down the "T" key. I see the firewire symbol on the screen, so I connected a firewire cable from the G4 to the Pro and turned on the Pro. Nothing happened. Should I have connected the display cable to the Pro too? I don't need 2 displays to do this action, right?
attempt #2. Mac Pro is connected to the display. I boot the Pro and follow instructions via "Migration Assistant". So I connected the firewire from the Pro to the G4 (while Pro is still running) and booted the G4 while holding down the "T" key and still nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong? Can anyone offer some assistance please? Thanks in advance.

Hi hscarr;
Transferring programs from a G4, which is PowerPC architecture, to a Mac Pro, which is Intel architecture, is a know method of creating problems.
It is highly recommend that instead all applications be freshly install on the Intel platform.
Once that is done that your data can be moved.

Is it possible to store a back up on external HD by transfering files using Target Disk Mode?

Dear Apple community,
There's absolutely no way that I'm going to be able to fix my MBP without a clean install. I simply cannot log in and get to my desktop screen after upgrading to Mavericks. So I will have to erase everything and perform a clean install. However, before proceeding with this plan, I'll have to back up my files from my MPB since I cannot use my mac normally, I'll have to back up my files using the Target Disk Mode. I've connected my MPB to another MPB in the past, so I know how the process work. But this time around I won't be able to use another MBP but a MB. I have a few doubts regarding the process especially in what concernd adding an external HD to this equation. So please bear with me and see if you can answer my doubts.
So this is the equipment I'll be working with: my MPB, my friends MacBook (2008) and my 1TB external hard drive.
My basic question is: once I connect my MPB in Target Disk Mode to the MB, I'm sure I'd be able to transfer my files to this MB. But let's say that I don't want to leave my files in this MB (after all it's not my computer) and want to send my files straight to an external HD connected to this MB. Is it possible? If positive, I know that the only FireWire port in the MB is a 400 port. That means my MBP will be connect to the MB using the only FireWire port available in the MB. So I believe that my external HD would have to be connected to the MB with the help of an USB cable. I assume that this will make the transferring process a little slower than if I could count solely on FireWire ports. Slowing the process down is not a problem but could this corrupt any of my files during the transferring process or even damage anything? I assume that would never happen after all it's just digital data, but better safe than sorry, right? What do you think?
Another thought that occurred to me is: let's say I connect my MBP to the MB using the FireWire 400. I'd still have an FireWire 800 port available on my MBP. If I connect my external HD to my MBP (yeah, the one that will be in Target Disk Mode) using that FW 800 port, would my MBP allow this external HD to mount as if it was just another folder/drive in my computer? If positive, theoretically I'd be able to transfer files from my MBP to my external HD manually (by dragging files from folder to folders), right?
I really don't want to transfer my files from the MBP to the MB and then from MB to external HD. That would just take time and I really don't know how much available space I'll find on my friend's MB.
Oh, one last question: when transferring files using Target Disk Mode, do all computers involved in this process gotta have the same OS X version installed or it doesn't matter if e.g one is running Snow Leopard and the other Mavericks?

Can I install to G4 iBook via Target mode from a MacBook Pro?

Can I install to G4 iBook via Target mode from a MacBook Pro? I have a non functioning iBook DVD Drive but want to do a clean install. Can I use the FW/Target mode to install? If not what can I do to install w/o the OD not working?

was this a std size disc or a funky shape / small cd of some type?
you will have to pull the machine apart, pull the slot drive, & take all the brackets / slot cover off the front of it (where you put the disc in). you can they try pushing down on the mechanical works (holding the drive as it sits in the ibook & face into the slot where you would put the disc in).
otherwise, you will have to take the drive itself apart, usually taking all the screws off around the outside & pulling the metal cover off will get you in to where you can force or pull the disc out.

HT4889 Transferred files via time machine and not log in password will not allow me to log in

I have a new MacBook pro, I transferred files via time machine and a removable hard drive. Now new MacBook does not recognize the log in password. What can I do to reset the password?

Did you migrate when you first booted up in Setup Assistant or did you migrate later? When you migrate later it can create a second account, check in Mac HD/Users to see if this is the situation.

Transfering files in ASCII mode using SFTP

Hi All,
We are using SFTP to transfer our files since we are using VPN. But we need a file to be transfered in ASCII mode from the remote system. We are using toad for that, but i heard that SFTP transfers file only in Binary mode by default. Is there any way to achieve it.?

Hi Narain,
SFTP transfers files in Binary mode only as it transfers over SSH - so it is upto the sending/receiving client to manage the line endings.
In BPEL,a java embedding can be used to convert line endings and then the payload handed over to FTP adapter for SFTP.

IMac 10.6.7 freezes at startup; have reset PRAM, replugged power, repaired disc via target mode on other computer, it spits out cds that came with it...any ideas? key commands useless, can't access permissions...i have to keep shutting it off...

My iMac 10.6.7 freezes at startup or if I click anything, won't restart, key commands don't work, I have to keep shutting it off to restart.....I repaired disc via target mode using a laptop, but access permissions there or by clicking anything on the screen...it spits out the discs that came with it...any ideas?

How the external system will talk to ECXpert 3.5 for transfering files via HTTP SSl?

We are using ECxpert3.5 on Solaris box. One of our Trading Partner want to communicate through HTTP-SSL and we are doing XML/EDI mapping. Could you guide us what steps we need to take care to implement this.
How the external system will talk to ECXpert for transferring files. (We need the syntax for the URL). How ECXpert will receive XML file through HTTP-SSL protocol from External System and file submittion.

You can bring the GRC framework to a state equivalent to a raw install by following options:
Option 1.) You should have a base-line backup before GRC installation. If so then apply that base-lin backup and deploy GRC components. If there is no base-lin backup, then
Option 2.) Uninstall and re-install J2EE and then follow up with rest of the installation process. If you don't want to go through re-install process, then

Option3.) SAP is in process of creating a SAP Note for Delete script, Instead of delivering Delete Script script via OSS message. Will update you as soon as the Note gets released.

Zero Erase time frame via target mode?

I am currently doing a zero pass erase on my old iMac. It's video card died a death a while ago and I am intending on selling it for parts. It has a 750GB HD with about 500GB of data.
I have it connected up in firewire target mode to my new iMac and am doing it via that so that I can see what I am doing.
My question is, it has been running for about five hours now and it is forecast to take another 32 hours. Is this duration to be expected?

How are you doing this security erase? Are you following this procedure:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If it's still estimating such a long completion time then it must be caused by doing it in TDM via Firewire.

Can't copy files in Target Mode

I'm trying to move applications from my Titanium PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.4.7) to my MacBook by booting the G4 in Target Disk Mode. I can get the icon representing the G4's HDD to appear on the MacBook's desktop, but sometimes when I double-click to open it, I get the beach ball and no window opens for the HDD. Most of the time the window opens, but then I get the beach ball when I try to open the Applications folder. So back on the G4 I tried moving the application's (Photoshop Elements) folder icon out of the Applications folder and into the HDD window. Now in Target Mode, when I drag the Photoshop folder icon out of the G4's window and onto the MacBook desktop, the copying process seems to initiate normally, but then stops. It always stops at the same number of MB copied, and then I get the interminable beach ball.
What's happening and how do I fix it?

Hard to say. Boot the PB with its Tiger install disk and run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and its permissions. Boot the PB with its Apple Hardware Test disk and run the extended tests. If the PB passes all of those, then repeat the same steps with the MB. Once both pass the tests, retry the TDM hookup, and copying stuff.

Lost 110 GB of disk space after deleting files in target mode... A mystery?

Dear all,
Yesterday, I used my MBP in Target Disk mode and deleted a directory with approx. 110 GB of files in it. Now I found out that this space is mysteriously gone: the available free space on my hard disk did not increase, and the files are not in the trash or anywhere where I can find them.
I tried Disk Utility doing ‘Verify Disk’ as well as ‘Repair Disk Permissions’, but with no success.
Could any one advice me how I can recover my disk space?

No, they are not in the trash of the other computer. It would also have taken the computer a while to transfer these files (110 GB takes a while, even over FireFire 800).
The issue is not that I want to recover these files (I have backup copies), I just would like to have my disk space back. It is siting somewhere but 'lost' to the DOS.

Transfering files via sockets

Hi
I am writing a client server app, and am communicating between the clients and server using the Socket and Serversocket class's. Transfering strings is very easy, but i also want to transfer files. I usually use Fileinputstream/fileoutputstream in normal circumstances, but i dont think this will work with sockets.
Any suggestions on how i can transfer files through a sockets would be most welcome.

Just create the InputStream to your file, read in some bytes, write the bytes to the sockets OutputStream, voila!

Transferring Files via File Sharing from 10.4.11 to 10.8.5

I am trying to get all of my files and information off of my laptop and migrate them to my new iMac. I have followed the instructions in regards for file sharing. However, when I bring up the finder and click on shared, the only thing that it will do is log me in as a guest. When I try and type in the password to log me in as a registered user it tells me that the password is wrong. Unless there is another password that I am unaware of I am 100% sure that I remember the password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pixel flicker to right of screen when transferring files via USB

Hi there, just discovered this evening this strange flickery pixel effect that occurs for some reason, only started happening today, and I was wondering if I should get it checked out if it progresses into something worse. It's only happening when transferring items from a FAT 32 external harddrive, and occurs once every time I move one item to the desktop for half a second. Here's a youtube vid of it;
