Transferring files without copying

What is the best way to transfer files to an EHD without leaving a copy behind?

As Clinton has pointed out that is the correct way to transfer any files and or folders to an External, and then trash them from the computer.
Let me just say that using an External is an excellent way to back up but remember most users like to use one form or another to redundant back ups. I use Time Machine, and a 2 terabyte external and a Flash Drive. This gives me 3 backups of all my data. This is just a suggestion to let you know that redundant backups are the way to go.

  • I'm having trouble transfering files without copying them.

I have a project file that I'm using on my desktop  and several sub folders. I'm trying to move groups of them all into one folder and the last folder wont let me transfer without copying. I'm not sure what all information would help get this question answered. I'm on an iMac Mac OS X Version 10.6.8, 3.33 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, 8GB memory. I have about 800GB free on the drive. The content is all video files and I've tried moving them all at once, one at a time, cut and paste, window to window and within the same window. I'm out of ideas. Not a crippling problem but unnecessarily time consuming. Any help would be appreciated, please and thank you.

    Hi zpat,
    welcome to macbook forum.
Did you follow the procedure properly from here :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
And for setting your macbook so it can connect to wireless as eMac:
Turn on your macbook airport on the top right menu bar corner and select your wireless access point name, and enter your password if it asked for it.
or try this: At eMac go to system preference > Network > show: airport > and click TCP/IP tab and set your macbook similar to that setting (Using DHCP), if it is not using DHCP, add the ip address manually by change the last ip digit with increment of 1.
    Good Luck.

  • Moving files without copying

I recently updated to Lion and have found the most overlooked issue in all OS updates I have ever witnessed. Now when moving folders between finder (or your desktop) to the Mac HD the files or folders no longer just move they copy!!! This is an extremely cumbersome process for any art department or any organization who stores or houses folders on the desktop of their machines to move to servers and or any other location for that matter. Instead of the simple move like in Snow Leopard the files now copy duplicating the folder and taking up twice the space on your hard drive!!!
The issues I have with this is that if a folder is larger than the amount of space you have on your systems hard drive you can not move it because of this silly copy feature within lion.
The only work around I and Apple have found is to move the folder to your trash first and then to your desktop and there is no copying. This is hardly a work around for any department being that someone could come in and empty your trash therefore losing vital information!!!
    PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS ASAP!!!
Any solutions to this are greatly appreciated. I have been using Apple for over 15 years and have never experience the down time I am experiencing now with having to go back and delete folders because they copy instead of the simple move I experienced before!!!

    Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your very swift response.
The 10.7.3 installation was done by the Apple Store four days ago, on Sunday 20 May 2012, so I doubt that the OS has become corrupt already.
I've verified all HDs, as well as repaired all Disk Permissions.
As for User Permissions, I'm the only user on the Mac, and it's a standard installation.
There are no additional Users, and I haven't modified the standard read-write permissions, or anything like that.
This is a very straight-forward, clean install, and I've been on Macs for 25 years.
However, in fairness, my original posting wasn't as clear as it should have been, for which I apologise.
The 200 GB folder is in the Trash, on an EXTERNAL hard drive.
In other words, when the external hard drive is not connected to my MBP, the Trash is empty.
However, when I plug the external HD into the MBP, the 200 GB folder shows up in the Trash.
Having seen a similar discussion in the Apple forums, I've attempted the suggested workaround of holding down the Command key, whilst dragging the folder out of the Trash, onto the EXTERNAL HD icon.
However, the entire folder immediately starts copying, instead of simply moving.
I've also tried holding down the Command key, whilst dragging the folder out of the Trash, onto the INTERNAL HD icon.
Again, the entire folder immediately starts copying, instead of simply moving.
As suggested, I've started a new topic.
However, I thought that I might as well go straight to the experts, such as yourself.
Therefore, any further advice would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Best,
    Michael

  • Zen Vision M - Transfering files without a progr

How do I transfer files to my ZVM without a software?
I managed to transfer files very easily with the MediaSource and the ZVM Media Explorer.
But, is it possible to transfer files without a software?
Say, i want to transfer music files from my friend's computer to my ZVM.
    Thanks

All mp3 players require you to install the software on the computer initially so the computer can actually recognise the player. Your friend would have to have Creative Zen Vision:M or the software installed on the computer first.
I'm not sure but your player may come up as a removable disc and not as the zen in 'My Computer', in that case you may be able to drag and drop files into it but I wouldn't suggest it as that could damage the player.
    Otherwise just buy the CD

  • Transferring files without firewire

when moving files from an old ibook or macbookpro to the new (firewire-less) macbook, what does the startup process suggest as a means of transfer? i've only done this with firewire and target disk mode, but without firewire, how is this handled?

The most reliable and trouble free method of copying files is FireWire. I have found that FireWire will often work where USB methods fail.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the aluminum Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Putting the drive in a external Firewire enclosure is a bit more work, but nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.
Ethernet may also work, IF you have two FUNCTIONAL machines. The great thing about Firewire Target Disk mode was that if the HD/OS was corrupted, or the computer was for some reason unbootable you could still get data off of it quickly, without tools or special equipment. Firewire Target disk mode has saved my rear several times on every machine I have owned.

  • Showing files without copying them to internal drive?

I was wondering how I can only show files in my iTunes library when the drive they're on is present and plugged in. For example, I have season one of House (50GB) and I have shown the files in my library (alt+dragging) and that means that the files are only watchable when the drive is plugged in and I want them to not be visible when the drive isn't plugged. I was wondering if there's any way to do this?
    Thanks!
    ~Daniel

Not that I know of. Maybe you should have a second library for those files.
To stop files from being copied, hold down the option key while dragging them to iTunes. Ten you just have to live with the exclamation mark for whose files when the drive isn't attached.

  • HT2518 how do I move migrated files without copying

I am trying to move my migraated folders up one directory, but only option is copy.  I don't have enough space to copy and delete, any suggestions that allow move.  I searched and tried dragging, pressing command or option while dragging, moving to menu bar. The cut option is greyed out in menu bar.

If Carbonite can't help you, how do you expect us to be of any help?

  • How I solved my problem of transferring files (without spending a dime)

I was trying to figure out a cheap way to transfer stuff from my old iMac to my "new" old iMac. I asked you guys. One person suggested buying a crossover cable, but that ended up being really a complicated idea since I'm using OS 10.3.9 and the old system was OS 8.6 (I could have perhaps sent it to my classic OS 9. Who knows).
Someone else said I should get a cheap Flashdrive, which was a good idea, and I will.
But I'm broke, and I needed my fonts right away. Here's what I did. I emailed them to myself as .sit (stuffed) attachments. It took a while, but it worked.
Just wanted to share. If you have any other suggestions, feel free to reply.
    Thanks,
    Allan

    Allan:
Pretty neat work-around. Unfortunately, you can't do that for everything. But, for you, this one worked. Congratulations.
    Cheers.

  • How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
I created  an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
So my question is the following:
How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
number of XML files could be unknown.
Thank you very much for your answer.

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Is there a way to move files from one folder to another without copying and pasting and then going back to delete the original?

Is there a way to move files from one folder to another without copying and pasting and then going back to delete the original?  The cut and paste function is not available and there's no "move to" function.  Am I missing something?  It was so easy with Windows.

Drag the files, or press Option when pasting them; this accesses the Move To function.

  • Save a pdf file without Adobe automatically adding "-Copy" to the end

How can I save a pdf file without Adobe automatically adding "-Copy" to the end of file name?

If you have actually made any changes (e.g. adding a Sticky Note or filling out forms), the Save button will appear in the bottom toolbar.  It will save it as the same name.
"- Copy" is added only when you tap/click the Save As button.  You can change it to something else, if you'd like.

For the hiding, go to the document properties under initial view. You may confuse some folks if there is no file menu to close the file (a lot of folks just can't get the keyboard shortcut, alt-F4, into their head. They are going to look for where to find the file menu to close.

No. I expected this (String fileName = substring(filePath.lastIndexOf("/")+1, filePath.length());) to workYou didn't provide a string reference on which to execute substring. As in:
    String str = "blah blah blah";
    String fileName = str.substring(...);
{code}If you just say *substring(start, end)* how is it supposed to know *which* String object to operate on?
Without the someStringReference. preceding it, calling a method--in your case substring--is like calling it on this object, i.e., like this.substring. Your class does not define a substring method, so it's a compile time error to try to call that non-existent method.

  • Import from camera archive without copying files?

I created a few camera archives from DV tapes. Is there a way to import footage from the archive without copying (duplicating) the files into the Events Folder? The option is greyed out on the import window.
When I open the archive package contents I can see all the .mov files, so I'm hoping there's a way to create a reference file instead of duplicating the file.  I'm trying to save some hard drive space.
    Thanks.

When you are copying from a hard drive that does not access the camera import function of the import window. The purpose of an archive is as a backup, to keep a separate set of media which cannot get corrupted by use or computer or drive failure. Generally it's in a separate drive from that used directly in production.
