Transferring footage from a DVD to CS4Pro

About a year ago I was asking what item to use/purchase to transfer video from VHS into my computer so that I could capture it into my CS4pro.  This year I snuck an old '86 DVD from my brother's wedding album and now I want to edit this video so that I can give it to him for Christmas as a surprise. The dvd was created from a VHS tape.  The colors and clearity are just awful. My question to anyone of you out there, is, what item can I buy to transfer a DVD video into my CS4 software that is friendly to use and works great?

It can be, depending on exactly how the DVD was created.
I have been handed some DVD's, that were created via DVR units (some consumer, but some pro from TV stations), and have just used my ADVC 300 with my dual VHS/DVD deck, to run the deck to the computer. This allows me to Capture from that DVD (a DVR) into PrPro.
Some, like Jim Simon, use a software program, to handle those problem DVD's. As I already had the hardware hooked up, I have not explored that possibility/workflow, but if Jim recommends it, I have zero reason to doubt it.
However, and depending on how the DVD was created, you might not even need that extra step. However, the VOB Import capability was not included until about the CS 4.2 update (might have been CS 4.1?). That will only yield good results, with 100% DVD-compliant VOB's, say ones created with a program, like Adobe Encore. Even some DVD authoring programs, create less-than-perfect,100% DVD-compliant discs. The issue is usually with the first VOB, that along with probably part of the spanned MPEG-2 AV file, also contains Menus and navigation. That is where things can go very far off.
As that first VOB (~ 1GB) contains the navigation and Menus, if it is filled, say with intricate navigation, then the user does not need anything from it, as the MPEG-2 will not start until the second, and probably the other VOB's. With many DVD's, that first VOB will NOT be filled to max with the navigation and Menus, and getting to just the MPEG-2 (the first part of the video), can take some work.
Sorry for any confusion above, and I wanted to point out that PrPro, as of the last update to CS 4, can actually work quite nicely with many VOB's. Depending on how the disc was originally created, you might not need any additonal software, or hardware. Still, the ADVC-110 is a good unit, and though you might not need it on this Project, if you have much VHS (or other analog source material), it is great to work with. As you mention the colors in the VHS, and again predicated on how much such work you plan to do, the ADVC-300 might be a real time-saver. It has the capability to do some pretty nifty correction, at Capture. That correction can certainly be done in PrPro, but with a ton of tapes, it can share hours off the total Project, and in my case, justified its higher price. For just a few tapes, I'd save the $, and stick with the 110.
For corrections on VHS source material, I usually go with a group of Effects: Levels, Shadow & Highlight (turned OFF of Auto), and then the Fast Color Corrector. It is surprising what just a few Effects can do, to enhance old tapes. Even with the TimeBase Corrections in the 300 unit, I still often do some tweaking with those Effects, but then it's usually pretty minor and quick.
Good luck, and sounds like a great present.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :

    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:

  • Problem Importing Footage From a DVD

I had posted a question about a week ago asking how to import footage from a DVD into FCE. Per Tom Wolsky's suggestion -- thank you very much-- I connected my DVD player to an analog/digital converter in order to capture my video material. Although FCE is recognizing the DVD player (evident by the fact that when I click "capture" the video is displayed in the capture window ), however, FCE won't actually capture the video when I click "capture now".
When the "capture now" window pops up it displays the message: "Waiting for time code. Device must be in VTR mode when device control is enabled." I can't figure out how how to correct. It seems that I'm only one step away from my objective of capturing the DVD. Would appreciate any guidance to get me over this final hurdle. Thanks.

Yes. ANY time you want to capture from a non-timecoded or non-controllable source, use that setting.

  • Easiest way to load footage from a DVD?

What is currently the easiest/fastest way to import video on a previously authored DVD into iMovie? I should point out that the application does not involve copyrighted material -- I simply want to rework DVDs that I made years ago. I have gotten good results by playing back with a DVD player and using a Canopus ADVC-300 to convert to DV, but surely there must be a better way by now. I am looking forward to the day when one can simply insert a DVD into the computer and import footage directly into iMovie. Why does this capability not exist? Is it not something that would obviously be useful? There exists a program called Prism that allows one to extract footage from a DVD, but this approach requires the intermediate step of a Quicktime file, which must then be imported into iMovie, and I'm not sure if it preserves high quality.

  • Editing Footage from a DVD

    Hi all,
I will be getting some footage from someone's wedding in DVD format. They would like me to edit it. I am not sure in what format those footage would be in but I am pretty sure that it would be in mpeg format (in the \Video_TS folders). If that's the case, will it be possible to retrieve the mpeg so that it could be edited in FCP?
Given that is possible, what should I do with the final export? Do I send it to compressor and prep it for DVDSP? I am afraid if I do that, it would lose picture quality (since it already lost some previous when it was compressed from DV to mpeg originally)?
    Any help appreciated.

  • How to bring footage from my DVD into FCP

    Hi,
I REALLY need some help! I edited my film in FCP and burned in DVDSP, the same goes for the raw footage. They are both now on a DVD. My problem is that I let my friend borrow the raw footage tapes (bad mistake I know!) and now he cannot find the tapes. So I want to know if it is possible to take the raw footage back off the DVD without loosing any quality, and to bring it back into FCP? Thanks SO much for the help!

Without losing ANY quality? Sorry, quality was lost when you encoded for DVD. More quality will be lost when you rip the footage off the DVD, and more lost again when you encode again for DVD.
Sorry bud. Gotta press your friend more.

  • Transferring footage from Sony V1U to Final Pro Cut Express...HELP!!

    Hi Guys,
I have been trying to transfer my footage from my V1U to my IMAC for days and am getting no where. At first I thought it was because Imovie didn't work with my V1U. So I went out and bought Final Pro Cut express today. I still CAN'T transfer my footage.
BTW, I am using a firewire 800 and my MAC is only a week old.
Does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I am about to pull my hair out.
    Thanks!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
HDV is not captured like DV.
It's a must to use the correct setup in easy setup dialog to fit your shooted material on tape.
Here's the trail to follow if you want to edit in HD (by the way I use a SONY FX1 that can shoot in HD mode or standard definition DV- mode: wide or standard screen).
    On my FX1
-find the camera menu and set the recording format to HDV (it sould be 1080i60 as it's the HDV format used by this model).
-Set the output format to automatic or 1080i60 (this is the type of signal that will be outputed by your camcorder upon capture via firewire).
-turn off you camcorder and mac.
-Plug both devices with a firewire cable.
-turn on the FX1 AND the mac.
    -Start FCE HD
    In Final Cut Express HD
-Use "Easy Setup..." command in Final Cut express menu , select HD in format tab, 29.97 in rate tab and HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. Click "Setup" button.
-From this point, any new sequences and capture session will occur in Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (the format used to edit in HDV).
-Use command-8 to open the capture window. HDV is captured via a simple dialog. There are no capture settings or log clips info.
-Start your camcorder in *VCR mode*(the play button on camcorder or on remote) and click the capture now button into FCE HD.
NOTES: there is no sound from your MAC upon capturing. There is a lag time between what is played on your cam and what you can see on your mac screen, so use the camcorder screen to monitor the content.
-Hit the "ESC" key when you want to stop the capturing process.
Once the esc key is pressed, your mac will continue to process the captured material and the capture window should close.
That's the way to capture HDV material into FCE HD.

  • Transfering footage from a pc to my mcp so that it can be used in fcp

im having trouble finding a way to download footage from my pc onto either a sd card or flash drive so that it can be brought up with fcp. Im just trying to see if anyone has a good idea for going about it. I prbly have 200gb of footage on my pc shot from a panasonic tm-700 that is saved in the panasonic software that came with the camera (panasonic hd writer AE 2.1) its all original unedited footage. My thinkning is that if i save the footage to a external hd on my pc that I cant just plug it into my mbp and then use clipwrap to re codec the mts files into .mov files since the pc external hd wont be formatted for a mac. Any suggestions?

If the external drive is formatted fat16 the mac should be able to read it. Test it first. I can't remember if FAT32 works, I'm sure someone will chime in. The trick I find is to use the Mac to do the formatting. Often if the drive is first formatted by the PC the mac will have trouble reading it.
There are apps out there that will help read cross-formatted drives. MacFuse is helpful.
You could also just connect the two with an ad-hoc network, just machine to machine. If the PC has gigbit networking it will be faster than a USB drive.
    Good Luck.

  • Import chapters from our DVD - legally!

We have various DVDs from my daughter's dance studio that the studio wants me to place online at our website - (I should say chapters or dance numbers, not the whole DVD, obviously) so that viewers can sample our dance tech by watching the imovies online.
I can, taking the long way 'round, import the DVD chapters to my video camera and import them to iMovie 6HD, but I have Mac the Ripper, and also MPEG streamclip - both of which work, however, I'm told that I need to get the MPEG-2 playback component from Apple, which I'm willing to do.
What format does iMovie neeed to import video in from this source? I want to import the footage from the DVD (via MacRipper & MPEG Streamclip) create the movie in iMovie, and then upload it to our studio's dot Mac website as I usually do.
Alternatively, what is the best/shortest/easiest way to get certain chapters off our DVDs and make our imovies with them?
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

    concerning mpeg4 as final format:
I made a few "side by side tests" with my QT6pro and iSquint...
using the same (small) bitrate, results of iSquint are by far better, then QT6's mpeg4...! (it uses its own/the ffmpeg algorithms...) esp. titles are crystal clear/no jaggies, or transitions don't show any artifacts....
iSquint has some limitations in size/res, but a web-video shouldn't be full-screen, should it?
so, esp. when crunching video very small, I do recommend export as FullQuality.dv and let iSquint (free) do the job...
audio... mono is for most videos good enough on the web... ;-))

  • How to get slideshow pictures from a DVD onto Mac

    Hi
I am not sure if I am in the right forum, however I need help with transferring pictures from a dvd slideshow onto my mac iPhoto.
When I see the files on the dvd, they do not seem to want to open as pictures, they are ifo, bup & vob files.
The DVD would have been created on Pinnacle, but as I now have a Mac, I want them to be included with my other photos.
Any help would be appreciated (please use simple terms as I have limited knowledge of how to do things)
    Thank you

they are ifo, bup & vob files.
Those are constituent parts of an mpeg2 video file. Doubtful if you can 'reverse engineer' those to single photo files, so I would suggest you take screen shots instead.

  • I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then to iMovie9.  Footage in iMovie is stretched.  Is there a way to fix that?

I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then dropped that footage into iMovie9.  The footage is there in iMovie but it is stretched.  I have tried to adjust using aspect ratio options but that doesn't work.  Is there a way to fix that in iMovie (or at any other point in the process)?

It shouldn't be this way.  Did you shoot the video in portrait or landscape mode?  Many people shoot in portrait mode because they typically hold the phone upright.  This is really shouldn't happen if the videos are shot in landscape mode.

  • Best export method of footage from Final Cut Express to DVD?

I'm exporting footage from Final Cut Express using Quicktime Player and then burning the footage to DVD using iDVD.
The end result on DVD has very jagged interlacing (or noise) on objects in motion which aren't present when viewing the footage on FC. I don't think the problem is with iDVD (I assume I'm burning a pristine copy of an already reduced-quality clip).
Are there any changes I can make to the system preferences either on FC or Quicktime Player to reduce or prevent loss of digital information, or can anyone suggest better methods of export from Final Cut Express to DVD?

    Hello
I'm not sure if this is relevant:
    I've been using the Quicktime Conversion settings;
    http://www.locationstudio.net/Settings.jpg
    29.97 Frame Rate
    Highest Quality
    NTSC/PRO
I was under the impression that this was usually best - haven't had any problems with iDVD

  • Editing footage from DVD in FCP

    Forum,
Here's my issue. A client has a 2 hour presentation on DVD, which they want to edit down to a 90 minute piece. This shorter piece will end up being on a looping DVD. The footage on the original DVD is 16x9 and they want to keep it that way for use on large widescreen monitors. What is the easiest way to get the footage into FCP? The clips to capture will be long, about 30 minutes, do I capture it playing from a DVD player? Do I use a "DVD Ripper"? I have no experience using that type of software.
    Help is appreciated.

MPEG Streamclip is what you need to convert the client's DVD to an editable format. The problem is that the video on DVDs is very highly compressed. If you take it, edit it and then recompress it back to a DVD there will be a noticeable loss in quality. Talk to your client and get an uncompressed version of their video (not a DVD).

  • Transferring a movie from a dvd camcorder

I have purchased an analog converter called ADVC110 to try and burn a copy of my home movies which were recorded on my Sony DVD camcorder but the process seems to take forever and is using up all the memory on my i-mac, surely this cannot be right ? I am trying to do this via i-movie HD, each recording on my dvd camcorder is taking about 1 hr 12 mins and there are about 70 of them , can anyone help to make this quicker and easier ?

The ADVC 110 is an analogue to digital converter. The way it works is for your camcorder to play the DVD in real time just like you were watching it. The camcorder outputs an AV signal that the ADVC converts to DV on the fly.
Therefore it is hardly surprising that a DVD containing about 1hr 12mins of real time recording takes exactly that time to download to the computer by this method. The DV format produced by the ADVC is the same as that used by tape digital camcorders - either digital 8 or minidv. This takes a lot of memory - about 17 gig per hr.
Another way would be to copy the DVD contents direct to your hard drive from a DVD player. The size of these DVD movies will be a lot less than if in DV format but they cannot be utilised directly by imovie. They can, however be played by various other means. These can be converted by your computer to DV using various third party programs. The process is not easy and probably takes as long as your real time conversion using the ADVC. You will still be stuck with the large file size.
Do you need to edit all of your movies using the full features of imovie or do you just want to cut/crop? If so there are alternatives to imovie. Look on Versiontracker
Maybe it would be better to cut/crop your DVD (mpeg 2) footage before imovie conversion.
