Transferring from a Mac 10.2.8 iTunes 6 to WinXP iTunes 7

I need to transfer my Mac-formatted iPod from a Mac running OS 10.2.8 with iTunes 6 to WindowsXP with iTunes 7 as well as all my music and audiobooks from my Mac iTunes library to my PC.
All of the documentation I can find says that they both have to have iTunes 7, but the Mac does not meet the system requirements for iTunes 7.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can accomplish this? What steps must I take and in what order?
Thanks for your help!
iPod mini Mac OS X (10.2.x) to WinXP Pro

OK first thing is, are all the songs that are on your iPod still in your iTunes library? And second, do you plan on still using the iPod with the Mac after you move everything to the Windows machine?
If all your songs are safe on the Mac, then what we want to do first is format the iPod in Windows format. Because, Windows can not read your Mac formatted iPod, but once in DOS format, both computers can read the iPod.
But I don't think we want to format the iPod with iTunes 7 because it may also update the firmware to where you can not read it on the Mac's iTunes. I am not sure of this, though. But if you don't need to use iTunes on the Mac anymore, I don't think it matters.
If you need to use the Mac iTunes still, Did your iPod mini come with a CD? If so, does the CD have both Windows and Mac stuff on it? If so, it likely has a restore/updater program on it for Windows. So insert the CD into the Windows machine and install the updater program. When done, plug your iPod into the Windows machine. Say no when it asks you if you want to change it to windows. Exit iTunes.
Now run the stand alone updater/restorer program. If it works correctly this should reformat the Mini to Windows format and put it back into the condition it was when you bought it. Eject it.
If on the other hand you don't need to use it on the Mac anymore for iTunes, then restore it with iTunes7 on the Windows machine. After it is done, enable Disk Mode on the iPod from the Summary page. Eject the iPod
Plug it into the Mac. Your Mac should now be able to read it. But you don't want to sync/update to it.
If we are keeping it Mac iTunes compatible then we want to put the iPod into disk mode (preferences -> iPod -> Enable Disk Mode). Exit iTunes. Otherwise you are already in disk mode.
iPod should be on the desktop. You can now drag and drop your iTunes stuff onto it...

assuming you have enough room. You may need to do it in several chunks. Eject the iPod, move it to the Windows machine, copy the iTunes stuff onto the Windows machine.
Once you get it all on there, eject the iPod. Open iTunes. Now if everything is back in the same folder structure, I think in order to keep playlists and stuff you want to Recreate our iTunes library. See these instructions...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
If that doesn't work, then you can always simply do a File -> Add to Library and select the iTunes folder which will add everything but then you lose play counts, playlists, etc.
Disclaimer: I haven't actually done the process as outlined above, so I am making assumptions on how things work. The above may not be completely correct.

Why dont my itunes download to iphone when I purchase from my Mac, why dont my itunes download to iphone when I purchase from my Mac?

It really isn't necessary to yell at me. I've done nothing wrong to you have have treated you with respect. Something you are not doing with me.
I suggest you check the manual, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf to see if it requires wifi for this to work. You might also want to try a reset on your device. It will have no affect on your data. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone restarts, see if this will cause the content to download. You also have the option to go to iTunes Store>More>Purchased and you can select the purchases and download them.

Any ideas or are we to await Mac correcting the software?

Okay, can someone please give a useful answer? Thanks! I have been experiencing exactly the same problem for some time now, and it is very annoying. Furthermore, I would like to point out to Chris CA that there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the original post.
So here is the deal. I used to be able to burn CDs with iTunes that played back fine on both my car and home stereo. After some update, and I am very sorry but I really do not remember which one, as I am just a user and not a programmer and just want something that works, which in the end Apple used to be all about, and therefore do not keep track of all the updates, CDs won't play back on my car stereo. Nothing else changed, still the same brand of CDs (even the same stack!), still the same car stereo, and still the same 2007 MBP. So by simple deduction I conclude it must be a software update. And I do not care what the exact cause is, I just want a fix!
I'd like to apologize for my tone in the above, but it is just a very annoying problem, even more so because it seems nothing is being done about it. Thanks for your answer in advance!

  • Transferring from old Mac to new Mac

Have just purchased an iMac and have transferred data from an old iMac and MacBook Pro so I now have two accounts on my new computer. Can I merge the two accounts and if so, how? Can I have both accounts open at the same time? Preference is to merge in to one.
    Adam Birchall

Sounds like you are doing fine. However, there is a bit of a difference between what you describe and what the original topic poster wanted to do. The original question was about how to merge two accounts that are already on the new computer into one account. That's why I suggested using the Shared folder. Your question is about how to transfer from an external drive (the Time Machine backup) to your new MacBook's internal drive; that's different, and you do not need to use the Shared folder. You should be able to transfer the files directly from the external drive to the appropriate location on in your +user home folder+, not the Shared folder.
Also, if you don't want to do it manually using Finder, there is a utility called Migration Assistant, in Applications/Utilities. You can use it to transfer user data from a Time Machine backup drive to your new Mac. Personally, I do it manually using Finder, because I have more control over what gets transferred (and how it is done), but Migration Assistant is certainly convenient. You can post back if you have questions about it.
You CAN copy your data into the Shared folder, and that would make the data accessible to more than one user account on your MacBook. However, if you are the only user, there is no need to use the Shared folder; just copy the files directly from the external drive to the internal drive, into your +user home folder+ (the house icon in the Finder window sidebar).
you mentioned that some files (particularly music files) won't automatically pop up into iTunes
Again, the original topic poster was trying to merge data from two accounts into one account. In that case, you have to pick one account as the master and add the data from the other account to it. That makes it hard to preserve things like iTunes playlists, rating, etc. from the account that is NOT the master account. You can add music easily by dragging and dropping the music files to the iTunes window, but that just adds the songs to the library; it does not preserve supporting data such as ratings, playlists, play count, etc.
In your case, it should be easier. Here's how to do it for iTunes. On the MacBook, quit iTunes if it is running. Open a Finder window to
    <user home folder>/Music/
In that folder, there is a folder called iTunes. If you use the default settings for iTunes, that folder has all the data iTunes uses. So what you need to do is copy the iTunes folder from the old Mac to take the place of the iTunes folder on the new Mac. For this to work, on the old iMac, iTunes must also have kept all of its data in the iTunes folder (you can post back if it was set up differently on the old Mac). After replacing the existing iTunes folder with the iTunes folder from the old Mac, when you run iTunes on the new Mac, it will use the data from the iTunes folder you copied over from the old Mac, and iTunes should look like it did on the old Mac. The only concern is that the old Mac was pretty old, so it may have used an older version of iTunes, not the current iTunes 9. However, I think iTunes will convert the data as needed, when it runs for the first time with the data, so it should be OK.
I kind of summarized how to do it instead of writing the steps in detail, so if you have any questions, you can post back.

  • How can I redownload recently purchased music that was removed from my mac mini through my itunes account?

I recently transfered all my music to an external hard drive and then deleted it and emptied the trash.  Most of the musi was transfered successfully but recent purchases did not make it and have been deleted.  When I go into itunes i can see the list of purchsed music, but since it's unable to be located I get the ! sign.  All forums tell me to go to the itunes store and go to pruchases under the quick link bar, but I don't see a quick link bar.  PLEASE HELP!  I am able to download the music onto my iphone and ipad just fine, why cant it be that easy on my new mac mini!  I am so frustrated!

  • The Domains.site2 file transferred from another mac won't open in iweb

Just transfered a Domains.site2 file from one mac to another in the applications support/iweb folder. But when I open iweb I get the error: can't read Domains.site2 file. Any thoughts on why this might be? It's a large file - over 2 gigs, transferred from an iMac running OX 10.5 to a macbook running OX 10.6
    Thanks!

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

  • How do I get QuickTime .mov files transferred from my Mac onto my PC to play?

I recently transferred a bunch of QuickTime videos from my Mac to my PC using an external hard drive. When I tried to open to files on my PC, the files were recognized as QuickTime files but they would not play. It said the files were of a type that quicktime does not understand. Do I need some sort of Mac to PC file converter?

  • Best Method of Transferring From Old Mac to New Mac

I've got a 27" iMac on order that's supposed to ship sometime in early January, and am wondering what is the best method of transferring everything from this Mac to the new one (once it arrives)?
As I understand it, there are essentially three ways of doing this:
    Migration Assistant
    Setup Assistant
    Time Machine
I've got two user accounts on this Mac, and will need to transfer everything for both accounts. I have about 350GB worth of files, data, and applications to transfer.
Is one of the above methods better than the others for accomplishing this? Are there any "gotchas" I should be aware of before moving everything over?
    Advice and assistance is welcomed.

The easiest method is to use Setup Assistant that automatically starts the first time you use a new Mac. It will offer you the opportunity to migrate all users or just those you select.
    Mike Osborn wrote:
... Are there any "gotchas" I should be aware of before moving everything over?
If you do not use Setup Assistant, you can always use Migration Assistant later. However, this can easily become confusing if you already created a user account on the new Mac. Most people won't have the patience to use Setup Assistant and understandably want to use their new Mac right away. If you elect to do that, don't create an account with the same name as one you wish to migrate. Instead, create a user account that you plan to erase after you migrate your existing accounts. The reason is that if you create a brand new account named, for example, "Mike Osborn", you will be unable to migrate to another account with that name.
Use a wired connection. Wireless can take an unacceptable amount of time (days).
Don't create a brand new Apple ID either. Have your existing Apple ID and password ready and use it, so you don't make the mistake of creating an Apple ID with no pedigree.
Register your new Mac (and all your other Apple equipment, if you have not yet done so) using this link:
      https://supportprofile.apple.com/
This provides for a convenient database of all your Apple equipment's serial numbers, service history, and warranty eligibility.

  • HT201317 Privacy concerns having files transferred from old Mac to new Mac.

I am buying a new Mac. I was told that all of my files and photos on my old Mac could be transferred to my new Mac if I left both Macs at the Apple Store for a couple of days. To be honest, I am concerned about privacy issues. Is there is a way to remove files and photos to iCloud and off the old Mac before taking it to the Apple Store?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't use iCloud to do this.
Moving information from one Mac to another is quite simple and you could do it yourself.

My new iMac with fusion drive hung up during transfer from another Mac.  How do I restart it?

I'm afraid you'll have to power down both, then...
    For the 2 macs...
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Music transfered from my Mac to PC don't play properly!

Heres my problem. I have many MP3 music files on both my Mac (G4 Cube), and my PC (which is a home built AMD 2600 Barton core and works just fine). I have iTunes installed on both.
I recently aquired about 90 old rock albums, and all are in perfect shape, from the late 60's to the early 80's. I've been bringing then into my "Cube" using a Technics turntable, hooked up through an external, USB powered sound card (iMic). Remember, the Cube doesn't have an internal sound card. I'm also using an internal DVD/CDRW drive which is installed into a external, USB 1.1, externally powered, drive encloser to burn them. (Note: This drive works fine, and I've burned other CD's that sound just great, using it.) I can bring these albums into my MAC system just fine using a MAC program called "Final Vinyl", edit them, and then install them into iTunes with no problems. Once they have been editted, I then convert them to MP3 (using iTunes). As I play them in iTunes on my MAC, they sound great. However, when I burn them to a CD and transfer them to my PC, using a CD that was burned using the MAC's iTunes' native burning, They sound terrible. I mean, after transfering them to my PC using the burned CD, (I've tried this using both MP3 and AIFF formats to do this) the sound is all muffled and is very heavily BASS'd. I can use the iTunes frequency "equalizer" to somewhat compensate for this heavy base, but this also makes the songs sound very "tinny" and not normal sounding.
Just as an added note: I have transfered many songs between the two computers using this method in the past, without any problems at all. But these were all songs loaded using regular CD's. These songs have no problems at all.
I'm wondering if it could have something to do with converting analog signals to digital, or if the turntable could be the problem. I'm reluctant to believe that, because when these "album songs" are played using the iTunes on my MAC (the machine I used to bring them) they sound just fine.
Has anyone run into this sort of problem before? Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

  • Transferring from old mac to new...

I've just recently upgraded from a Power Mac G5 single pre-intel to a shiny new iMac, and I'm wondering how to get all of my songs from my old computer to the new one.
I've had a look at Migration Assistant, but it seems to only allow me to transfer huge sections of my old files and preferences and such at a time (Library, Users, Applications, etc). There's a lot of buggy old files and corrupted documents that I really don't want to move to my new computer, so I'm trying to sort out how to move all of my music and perhaps a few other files over without having to use the Migration Assistant.
    Any tips?

You can use an ipod to do this. Here is an article to help:

You cause a hard drive or dvd,cd as well. Hopefully this will help:

You can also drag your entire itunes folder to an external drive and copy to new computer.
