Transferring from imac to ibook

Hi...my first computer was a blue iMac, originally released in 98 with a tray-loading cd....i have lots of pictures and files on there that i would like to transfer to my ibook G4 laptop before I pass the iMac onto a young friend for her first computer....how do I do that? The OS for the iMac has been upgraded to 9, I think...I haven't used it in awhile...I just remember that up/downloading pictures via email takes 25 min or more...do the two computers connect via ethernet cord? I basically want to save everything to the laptop and clean up the iMac for giving it away. Suggestions?

To keep both libraries perfectly synced, you may need to find a script or separate application to do it.
If you're just interested in keeping the music the same (but not necessarily play counts, ratings, etc) you can just copy the music itself from one computer to the other (via network).
Perhaps someone with a bit more imagination/experience can provide a working solution? I've done something similar by using an external/network drive and a sym linked iTunes library, but the problem with that is your laptop won't be able to access the music unless it's on your home network.

Tranfer from imac to ibook

I am unable to transfert my web site (iweb) from imac to ibook. How can I transfer my hard drive from one mac to the other. This should solve the question as I want to transfer my outlook also and unable to do so. Am in a rush. Have to catch a plane . Many thanks as this is kind of an emergency

I haven't come across that problem before. It sounds like you're following all the right steps, and you're logging in to the other computer with the right credentials, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
However, providing that you're using an admin login, you can connect either way (iMac to iBook or iBook to iMac) to transfer files. An admin login will allow you to mount the entire hard drive of the other computer; an ordinary user login will only be able to access their own home folder. So if iMac --> iBook works for you, you can still copy files to the iMac that way. Make the connection, browse in the mounted iBook's folders, and copy across the files you want.

File transfers from iMac to Windows Share on another computer. Very slow!

Hopefully someone has some ideas on how best to troubleshoot this.
I have an iMac and a Windows 2003 File Server.
The iMac sits on a gigabit switch with another computer, an XP machine and the 2003 File Server sits on another gigabit switch.
The problem I'm having is that transfers from the iMac to the 2003 File Server are very slow whereas from the XP machine on the same switch they are fast.
Any ideas on how to test this or how I might fix the problem?
The Network interface itself is set to:
1000baseT
full-duplex
MTU: standard (1500)
I've tried it with both full-duplex and full-duplex (flow control).
The directory I'm transfering is a 7.56gb directory and it's taking over an hour to transfer.

This doesn't quite work at all. I can understand for OSX to be serving the files the need too change /etc/smb.conf, however, my OSX machine doesn't serve any files, thus the smb service is offline. I have tried adding that tag to my fileserver using samba (its a linux nas box) and it still is slow as ****. I know it works with tiger because one of my sisters is using a macbook on tiger and is able to connect wirelesssly to it and download files as fast as my MBP downloads through ethernet (mine is leopard). My other sister has the exact same configuratino of macbook, however hers is leopard like mine and it moves crazy slow. I know this is the reason why apple pedaled back about network drive time machine because they realized the broke something so I'm giving them the beneffit of the dooubt. If 10.5.2 rolls around and I don't see improvement I think i'll just go back to tiger...

Transferring set-up for Mail from iMac to iBook

I just switched from AOL to Mail on my iMac and would like to have the same setup on my iBook. How can I do this without building everything from scratch a second time? I'm not sure where to look for the preferences or whatever that is saved for my Mail configuration. Any help?

One easy way to make the transfer, unless the Mail folder is of extreme size, is to Network the iBook with the iMac. More on this in a moment.
What you want to do, by network, target disk, or burned media, is REPLACE the com.apple.mail.plist file (Home/Library/Preferences), and the Mail folder (Home/Library/Mail ) on the iBook with a copy of the same files from the iMac. Once you have done this, launch Mail on the iBook, and you will be set. The same can be done with the Address Book (Home/Library/Application Support/Address Book.
To do this while in direct network link do the following:
On the iMac, click on System Preference icon in the Dock, and choose Sharing. Next place a check mark in box beside Personal File Sharing.
Now, on the iBook, open a Finder window, and click on the Network globe in the Sidebar, and you will see your iMac listed. Double click on the iMac icon, and when prompted enter the administrator password for the iMac. At that point choose to connect to your Home folder on the iMac, and then an Icon for that home folder will mount on the iBook. Open it the same as you would open the HD, and then open the HD on the iBook, and locate the files you wish to replace with copies of those on the iMac.

Can I pick what is transferred from iMac to new MBP ?? (iMac larger HD)

My new 17" MBP 2.33/2GB/7200rpm100gb laptop shipped today (after a weeks delay) and should arrive Thurs 16th in CT.
I also own iMac G5 2.1 Ghz, 20", an eMac 1Ghz G4, and now, finally deceased PowerBook G3 500 Pismo (2000), 1GB RAM; 60gb 7200rpm.
When I got my iMac (which I use at work & home) I transfered via firewire everything from my PB G3 500, the setup program on iMac just transferred everything and only gave me the option to transfer or not.
But my iMac disk, 250GB, is 4 gb short of being full from music and work files). Can I pick and choose which files or programs are transferred to new 100gb drive ?? I don't want all the programs and files sent.
I really only want Mail/Address Book/Calender files, accounts and contacts, plus Safari's bookmarks.
I don't want all keychains, extra programs and all music files sent.

Migration Assistant won't provide file level transfers. It's also not a good way to transfer data between PPC and Intel Macs. Your best option is to simply copy the files from one computer to the other. You can connect the computers via network and transfer using file sharing or you can connect them via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode.
You will find the Mail and Safari data in /Home/Library/Mail/ and /Home/Library/Safari/ folders, respectively. Address Book and iCal data are found in /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder and /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal/ folder, respectively. Be sure to also copy the preference files from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder for Mail, Safari, Address Book, and iCal. They will start with "com.apple." and end with ".plist".
Because your older Macs are PPC machines avoid transferring anything other than your data files. Intel and PPC software are not compatible.

Books transferred from Itunes to Ibooks loses author and category information.

How can I get author and category information for pdfs to transfer from itunes into the ibooks app on Mavericks? I just transferred my book collection from itunes to the ibooks app and have lost all the author and category information that I entered on all my pdfs. Do I now have to re establish this info in ibooks app? Ibooks doesn't appear to allow for creation of new categories or editing of author's name when it assigned unknown to all my pdfs. My book library appears to have been seriously downgraded by this "upgraded" os.

totally agree with you. Exactly the same here.
you can't re-establish this info in iBooks because it doesn't allow you to do it. No editing and organising at all (except from moving into a section of your choice).
In addition to no editing/changing, no backup/restore, no books/pdf location settings (all placed in user-library), etc. ... simply a complete disaster.
For me a killer-criteria to use OSX Mavericks! That forces me to move back to OS X mountain lion!
What did the Apple iBooks dev team think when creating this application? Come on this can't be true!

Migration from imac to ibook keeping the files intact on imac.

I have just bought a second hand ibook g4 osx10.4 and want to migrate some of my apps, documents and other files from my imac osx10.4.11. I will still be using my imac so want to know if its safe to use the normal migration procedure or will it delete the files and apps from their original place on the imac.

Failing transfers from iMac to iPod

I've won a free 30GB Video iPod and last night I set aout transferring my iTues Library to the new iPod. I had no idea how long such a step would take so i decided to do it overnight.
Just before going to bed I noted that it was transferring a Queen track. 12 hours later it was still tansferring the same track - it had obviously stuck.
Ejecting the iPod didn't, so the only way I could stop the session was to unplug the USM lead - not recommended practice I guess.
I started again and it stuck at the same place so i deleted that track from iTunes and started yet again.
This time it stuck on another track so I had to repeat all the "pull out the USB lead, delete offending track and start again" routine.
This has now happend five times and I'm still nowhere near copying the whole iTunes library - and the offending tracks play fine on the iMac.
So:
1 Why is it happening?
2 How can I stop it happening again when the "offending" tracks are put back into my iTunes?
3 How can I ever "automatically" synchronise if everytime I plug in the iPod it is going to stick?
I am an iPod rookie (and, for that matter an iTues very basic user) so any advice would me very much appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff. I've followed your tip and some loaded correctly after I'd reimported them from the original CDS and a couple didn't. Those latter have now been binned permanently.
But I have another problem: I am now importing my iPhotos onto the iPod and it has again "stuck". The problem is that, unlike iTunes imports, iPhoto seems to give no indication as to which specific snap is causing the problem. How can I identify and remove the offending picture?
If I just pull the USB plug on the iPod (the only way I've found of freeing a stuck transfer session), will all those prior to the sticker remain on the iPod so that I can just count to the offender, or will it lose some of them and leave me none the wiser?

Hi, When I enter my website it shows me this message:
"the account you're attempting to connect to either does not exist or is currently inactive."
What should I do? I transfered my iweb from my imac to my macbook via firewire but now it doesn't work.

Moving iphone 4 from imac to ibook

Okay I had a iphone 3GS and it was linked to an imac 10.4.11 with itunes 9. Now I have a iphone 4 GSM. It needs a Leopard or better. My mom bought a used ibook that is upgraded with Leopard. We upgraded iTunes to 10.
Now we tried to move the itunes via backup drive to ibook. We got the apps but not the phone contacts. What did we do wrong?

You can try moving the iPhone backup database to the new computer. It is in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync

Transferring from iMac

Just returned from the store with my new nano. BUT when I tried to transfer my files the nano froze after about 6 to 8 files and been transferred, and I could not reset anything except by pulling the plug.
I even tried doing one track at a time and it still froze after I transferred about 6 tracks.
I have repeated this over and over with same effec it's going to take along time to transfer 1000 tracks at this rate.
Where is the problem - I have updated all the software.

I don't know what is causing your problem. Have you tried resetting the nano? Or restoring it with the iPod Updater?

Unable to tag songs transferred from iMac to iMac

Hi all, I converted my Mac-hating roommate to the Light Side, and she just got a 20" Core 2 Duo iMac. The problem we're running into is she copied a bunch of her files over from my 20" Core Duo (we rebooted my iMac into Target Disk Mode), and she's unable to re-name or tag some of the music we copied over in her iTunes. Get info in the Finder on the files in question says that Read & Write permission is given, and none of them were iTunes purchases either. Is there something we're missing?

Make sure they are not Read Only.

Transferrring from Imac to Ibook

I just got an Ibook, and would like to transfer everything in my Itunes to my Ibook. What is the easiest way to do this? Do I have to move it to an external harddrive (IPOD) or is there a way to connect them directly and sync them up?

LarryHN is correct. The only way this message occurs is if the iPhoto Library database is upgraded to a newer version.
You could try holding SHIFT-OPT-COMMAND when launching iPhoto from the dock and checking only "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" and hope it restores the previous database prior to the upgrade.
If that doesn't work, you can install iPhoto '11 on your iPhoto '09 computer. If I understood the iPhoto '11 Mac App License agreeement correctly, you can install it on any personal, non-commerical computer you own running 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7.
