Transferring From iPod to New Laptop

I recently lost my whole hard drive and had to re-image my machine. I was able to add my back up files into my "new" iTunes, however there are about 500 songs that I had failed to back up onto disc that are still on my iPod. I was told by Apple that only purchased files can be transferred. Most of these files are an iTunes purchase but there are some tracks which I uploaded from CD's. Will those be lost? I'm afraid to synch my laptop and my iPod because I don't want to erase and synch with this limited library. How do I use my iPod as a storage medium and transfer all those files onto my machine?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Transferring from ipod to new computer

I have authorisized the new computer, but still get the message that items i purchased could not be transferred from ipod because computer is not authorized.

    Hi Brensam,
Have you tried re-authorizing your computer?
Select the "Store" menu in iTunes (it's with the other tabs on the top of the iTunes window), and click on "Deauthorize computer" to deauthorize this computer.
Once you've deauthorized, go to the Store menu again, and now select "Authorize computer" to authorize this computer again.
After doing that, try syncing purchases to your iPod - do you still get the "now authorized" message?

  • Missing songs when transferring from old to new laptop

    Hi
I have just moved my songs from old to new laptop.  Unfortuantely it has not copied all of them over, when I try to play in itunes it asks me to locate them.  I have checked what has copied over and it has definately left them off, problem is it's left off quite a lot.  Was there something that I should have done on the old laptop before copying them to an external device?
    sue

To do that, you need to go to "/Applications/System Preferences" then go to the "Accounts" prefpane, then click on the user you want to delete, then click on the minus button in the bottom left corner of the window, but make sure you are logged in as the good user to do this and that the good user is an administrator.

  • Transfering music from ipod to new laptop on Windows

I recently got a new windows laptop, because my old one broke. I have installed the most updated itunes to it, turned on the home sharing, and I would like to add my songs from my ipod to this new laptop. Also, it will not let me update my itunes on to my ipod without erasing everything I have purchased?
Where can I find my bought music on my itunes account? Is there a way to transfer everything onto my new laptop without starting fresh? I do not want to buy the same song twice. So I won't use the itunes if I cannot transfer everything into one place, and add new songs from my new itunes onto my ipod.
This has happened before, and I redid my entire ipod. I do not want to spend more money on the same songs.
Is there a list of things I can do that will sync all of my music to my new itunes without erasing my ipod?

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Unable to transfer music from ipod to new laptop

I have had to purchase a new laptop and want to transfer my music, etc, from my ipod onto my newly installed itunes, so I can then transfer it onto my ipad.
I can see the music on my ipod, but when I try and drag the music into the library on itunes, a red 'no' symbol is displayed.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • How do I get audiobooks transferred from iPod to new iPad? They aren't showing up on iPad after being bought on iPod.

Bought an iPad today and everything looks like it is there except audiobooks that were bought on the iPod

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store, so they won't appear in the cloud for re-downloading. You should be able to connect the iPod to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchased to copy them over to the Books part of your computer's iTunes library and you can then sync them to your iPad

  • Trying to download from ipod to new computer and it keeps coming up with alternative apple id

trying to upload from ipod to new computer and my work id comes up instead of home id have never taken ipod to work so why is this happening and how do i correct it

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)
