Transferring from MacBook Pro to new IMac

Hi
I started up the new IMac and choose to synchronise between the Macbook Pro and the IMac via ethernet. Everything was going well till it hit the timzone settings. It has now been stalled on this screen for 2hrs and nothing is changing.
I'm wondering what to do
- should I shut down the Imac and start again?
- wait?
- something else?

Abort and try again.

  • New iMac - need to move files from Macbook Pro to new iMac

    Hi there everyone,
Did some quick searching, but didn't find the answer that I needed.
I am picking up my new 27" iMac (base model) and will need to move my files and programs from my Macbook Pro to the iMac. What is the best way to accomplish this? Are there any tools on the iMac that will help do that, or is it a manual effort?
    Thanks!
    Mark

When you first start new Mac it will ask you if you want to migrate. Say yes at that point and Setup Assistant will migrate everything for you.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro to new iMac via Firewire

    Hi guys
My MacBook Pro is seriously on its way out and I would like to transfer my music files, work documents, photographs, videos etc. onto my brand new iMac and the best way to do this I would think would be to link the two up via Firewire. The MacBook Pro is no longer accepting my external hard drive and fails during during DVD's, so those options are out.
So I was wondering if someone could advise me on what type of Firewire cable to get. As far as I'm aware I didn't get one with either the MacBook Pro or the new iMac, so I think a purchase is necessary however, I've spotted that there are different kinds with different ends, some which have 6-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin and I have no idea what to get. Could someone advise me on what would be the best item to get for this situation?
My MacBook Pro is one that was the model before the black keyboards came back in, and the iMac is the brand new one at 21".
    Thanks for your help guys.
    Steve.

    Hi
FireWire 800 / FW800 / IEEE 1394b uses a 9-pin connector for both the imac and the macbook pro.
    good luck.

  • Having difficulty migrating info from MacBook Pro to new iMac

I have been trying to migrate my information from my MacBook Pro (10.9.1) to my new iMac (10.9.1).  I've connected the two via ethernet.  They are recognizing each other, but then one or the other seems to shut off and requires me to enter my password and it stalls the whole process.  I've attempted this migration at least 5 times now (or more) and the same thing keeps happening.  Any suggestions?

I just got a new iMac on January 2nd, and moved 320GB worth of data from my external Time Machine backup drive (a Firewire drive connected to the new iMac via the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter) to the new iMac in about 3 hours or so.  This was all done via Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant (which can be run later on for those in a hurry to use their new Mac).
It almost sounds to me as if you're transferring everything via WiFi.

  • How to transfer itunes control from macbook pro to new imac

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro that I have used the past several years as my iTunes 'control' device. It's what I connect my iPhone, iPad, and iPod to in order to sync music, apps, etc and to back those devices up. I just bought a new iMac and would like it to be that 'control' device now, but can't seem to find any way to do that. I can't do anything with Home Sharing except play music while another device is also on the network, and even the iTunes copy directions pertaining to external drives, CDs, etc, all just transfer the music library. I want apps, too. If I try plug anything directly into my iMac via USB I get an annoyingly persistent bonging error message - "iTunes could not connect to this (whichever device I plugged in)".
I was really excited about having my new iMac as my iTunes control base and retiring my MacBook, but it appears I might not be able to do that. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks.

I gave up and called Apple Support. Turns out it was actually a simple problem - and a valuable lesson learned. Several months ago I was at the airport when I realized I'd forgotten my Apple-to-USB cable. Went to a kiosk and bought a "guaranteed genuine Apple replacement". Well, it isn't. That was the cable I was trying to use to connect my various devices to my new iMac and that was what was causing my problem. Apple support guy was very polite in telling me it wasn't up to Apple standards. Tracked down a genuine, genuine Apple-to-USB cable and bingo! everything is working fine. I'm backing up and syncing my iPad to my iMac as I write this. Caveat emptor when buying "genuine Apple replacement" junk at airport kiosks! And thank you for polite, professional, and spot on support from Apple!

  • Migration from MacBook Pro to new iMac didn't bring iWeb

I recently bought an iMac and migrated all, or at least I thought all, of the programs and info from my MacBook Pro onto it, but when I open iWeb on the iMac it wants me to make a new website and has none of the info from the one that already exists.
Can anyone help with this problem?
    Thank you.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on your MacBook Pro and move the Domain.sites2 file there to the same folder on your iMac, replacing the domain file that might be there. That file is what iWeb needs to manage your site.

  • Transferring old macbook pro to new imac

Hi, I was running a macbook pro as my new machine but just took delivery of new imac. Last time i changed machine the set up assistant dealt with this. Unfortunately, set up assistant didn't start up first time as it should have, i checked the help section and it says use migration assistant, is this the right way to make my new mac copy ove my old mac completely?
Also, the new machine won't let me in to to do this as it has the administrator account set up but i've been given no password. The user name is 'user', does anyone have a clue what the default password might be?
    Regards
    Steve

Hi, I've never unboxed a New Mac that has a User already set up.. The only time I have seen this is when a store sets them up for demo/display..(BestBuy-CompUSA etc)..Maybe even a 3rd party Refurb.
I would certainly before using the machine find out the history..
Sorry to be a bearer of "bad news" .........L

  • Migrated from MacBook Pro to new iMac.  I have no address book application.

I had an address book app before the migration but do not have one that will work. The icon is not the normal app icon but a generic one like Audio Recorder's icon. I try to open but it won't open.
If I go to Mail I can open and view all addresses there but only within Mail, however iCalc won't open it.
How do I get it back or re-install without having to restore?

The following is from this Apple document, iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ, and will help you understand how Photo Stream works:
    My Photo Stream
When you take photos on an iOS device, or import photos from your digital camera to your computer, My Photo Stream can automatically upload your new photos to iCloud and push them to all of your other devices.
When do photos upload to My Photo Stream?
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Since your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, be sure to select Photo Stream > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture. On your PC with Photo Stream enabled in the Control Panel, all of your photos will be imported into C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream.

how do i remote from macbook pro to my iMac desktop?

screenshare. look for your imac in the sidebar of your mbp finder window. right click and choose share screen. or there is an option for it when you click the user. either way, screen share will come up where you can control the desktop of the other computer after you login with the appropriate account.
you'll need to have screen sharing available in system preferences>sharing>screen sharing

  • Moving photos from iPhoto in macbook pro to new iMac

We recently got a new iMac.  Pumped to move photos from 13" Macbook Pro to huge iMac, right?  Well this has been quite a crazy effort!  So far, here is what I have tried unsuccessfully:
    1) Moving iPhoto library (from the icon) to external hard drive and then moving that file onto the computer.  I cannot get it to move from the hard drive into my photo folder on the iMac.  I tried to just click it and upload the pictures but then only about half of a size of each photo shows up and is really screwed up.
    2) Tried by bluetooth (93gb).  Just froze up the Macbook Pro program trying to do that.
    3) Tried sharing wireless connection
    4) Tried hooking up an ethernet cord between the two.
What I run into over and over is that I cannot click and drag the iPhoto Library icon over to my iMac.
So any ideas?  Initially did all photo files over but it made two and three copies of each of them and my research of this has said to use the iPhoto Library icon.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I may have just figured out part of the problem.  I was having trouble dragging files and discovered others were having the same problems through these forums.  Restarted the computer and bam...I can drag the file now!  Thought I was going to go crazy.  We'll see if this works ultimately.
    Thanks Larry

There is a bug when doing “export mailbox” and import mailbox functionality.
    Workaround:
      > Open Finder and under the “Go” menu, hold down the option key.  The “Library” sub-menu will show up.
      > Copy the entire “Library > Mail” folder to a USB disk (it will not work if copying to a shared drive for some reason)
      > Take the USB disk to the new computer and do an “Import Mailbox” and select the copied Data file.  There will be LOTS of folders that come up for import, you can browse through and deselect what you don’t need (e.g. trash or junk mail), OR just import everything and then clean up from your mailbox.
      > The imported folders will show up in mail under the “On My Mac” area.

  • How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Start over, restoring the OS on the new machine, and follow the steps outlined in  Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using the Setup Assistant.

  • Transferring data from old macbook pro to new iMac

    Hi,
I am wondering whether i need to update my macbook pro to maverick prior to transfer?  Its quite old, and not sure it can handle it.
Should I use time machine or migration assistant?
    Thanks!

No. Just migrate your files - the Home folder. You would only need to upgrade the old machine if you cannot get the two to talk to one another over your local network connections. By all means use your Time Machine backup via Migration Assistant.
