Transferring Hard Drives

Can one or more hard drives from an older Mac Pro (2006) be transferred to a new Mac Pro?

Best performnce increase you can get is to establish a Boot Drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including Paging/Swap. If that drive is a low-latency SSD, you get an incremental improvement. If you are running 10.6.8 or later on that SSD, you should probably be using TRIM Enabler for good long-term stability.
Your older Mac Pro is wired for ATA/IDE in the Optical bays. 2009 and later are wired for SATA and there are no hidden SATA ports on the motherboard.

  • Transferred hard drive from Macbook to Mac mini and now have Disk Util prob

The problem is with Disk Utility. Basically, the DU window is just blank, that is, no hard drives show up in the left hand column. Also, none of the buttons at the top are clickable, though the menu bar drop down menus work. If I use Expose to push the window off the screen and then bring it back, then sometimes it shows the hard drive, but part of it's name will be cut off. Also, if the left hand side of the window is blank, but I right click somewhere there, it will behave as if I'm right clicking on the drive's name.
I also ran Disk Utility off the Leopard install disc and that's running fine. All the drives showed up fine and I repaired permissions and repaired the disks wherever possible. I also tried trashing the DU preference (plist) file, but that didn't help. I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems.
Like I mentioned, I'm not sure if this problem has anything to do with the mini or switching out the drive or if it was just coincidental with the drive exchange today. I can't remember the last time I tried using Disk Utility, but I'm sure it was some time ago.
The reason I was trying to open up DU was b/c my Time Machine backup drive is not being recognized by the mini as the backup (probably somehow it was tied to the Macbook), so I wanted to reformat it and start the Time Machine back ups all over again.
Anyway, I was wondering if you anybody had any suggestions. Maybe my Disk Utility program is somehow corrupted and I could reinstall just that program somehow? It almost seems kinda like a graphics issue since the window for DU kind of looks funny (things cut off, buttons disappear, etc.).
Update: I used Pacifist to extract the Disk Utility program from the Leopard Installer and it still has the same problem.

I see. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I may have already tried what you suggested, as I mentioned in my original post that, "I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems."
However, I haven't created a new account and tried opening DU when logged into that account. Do you think that may make a difference?
    Thanks.

  • Transferring Hard Drives between G4's

HI......I may have the chance to purchase a Quicksilver G4 (2002) from work.
It is the 800MHz model with 1.25Gb RAM and a 160Gb hard drive.....
It is running OS X 10.3.9..........
    I am currently on OS X 10.4.8......
If I was to get it how do I transfer the hard drive across? (I have a Firewire cable I can use)......
Will there be a problem with the fact the new one has a older OS X? (I will obviously get rid of all of the work stuff before hand)
Will I have to re-install OS X 10.4 on the new one or does the hard drive transfer also transfer the Operating System...?
I did transfer the hard drive across when I went from my old iMac to the current G4 but I was also installing OS X 10.4 as well and it was part of the process.......
Any advice or comments are appreciated
    Thanks

    Hi, craigkelleigh -
If I take out the hard drive and place it into the QS does that mean that I will only have 40Gb (as per my old machine)........or will it combine with the 160Gb already there?
    Neither.
You would have two hard drives in the machine - one 160GB, the other 40GB. Either could be booted to (provided there is a bootable OS on both), and the other used for additional file storage, etc. You would have a total capacity of 200GB, but it would not be combined - you would still have two drives (volumes), each separate from the other.
For example, on my G4/500 I have two internal drives, one of which has been partitioned into three volumes; I also have three firewire drives attached to it. All seven volumes have a bootable OS (they are of various versions); any of the seven can be used as the boot volume; all volumes are accessible and can be used no matter which OS I boot to.

  • Transferring Hard drive data. Help desperatly needed!!

I recently had a malfunction of my hard drive but with some help of Disc Warrior managed to back up all of the HD on to an external USB HD. I then replaced the existing HD in my Macbook for a larger drive an reinstalled OS 10.5.3. However I can't transfer any of the old system/library/applications or User settings and programs. So all my iLife, iWork, Quicktime pro etc will only run in demo modes.
Does anyone know how I can "swap" all the content from my backed up HD on to my new internal HD?
By the way the back up was NOT done in Time Machine.
    Thanks in advance.

You can reinstall iLife simply by inserting the second recovery DVD that came with your computer and following the onscreen directions to "install additional software that came with your computer." As for iWork, simply install it from the disk that it came in. The serial number is included with the disk.
You can get the key for your Quicktime Pro account by emailing Apple support and explaining the situation.
If you're still looking to clone your external backup back to your internal drive, there's a few ways to do it. The easiest for non-technical users is to plug your Macbook into another Mac with a firewire cable and boot into FireWire target disk mode. (To do so, start with your MacBook off. Hook it up to the other Mac and then turn it on while holding the T key. This will mount the drive to the desktop of the second Mac.) From there, simply use Disk Utility to wipe your Macbook's hard drive clean and then clone the external disk (where your backup is) to the internal hard drive in the Macbook.

  • Transferring hard drive to another macbook

Ok well long story short I had water spilled over my macbook which I bought in the summer of 2008. My mom also has a macbook which was bought in December of 2009. she gave me her macbook while she purchased a new one. I am trying to figure out how to transfer my hardrive (which was not damaged) to my "new" macbook. I really don't understand macbooks that well so if someone could please explain to me step by step how to transfer my hard drive to my new computer I will be so grateful. ( I also took my computer to the apple store and they tried to literally switch my hardrive out from the old and into the new but they could not get it to work.) Thanks

Since they tried swapping drives there may be a problem with your old drive. One thing you could try is going to Other World Computing or other business and purchase a drive enclosure to install your old one in. Then you could plug it in to your MacBook and try and read it as an external drive.
How do you know your hard drive was not damaged? What happened that makes you think this?

  • Transferring hard drive contents to iBook G4

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook running OS 10.4.11. I've had nothing but trouble with it and would like to sell it, but I need to transfer the contents of my hard drive to my old trusty iBook G4 before I do (also running 10.4.11). Right now, I have the entire MacBook drive backed up onto a fully bootable external drive. What steps do I need to take to make sure that a) the MacBook is back to its factory-included settings, and b) the iBook hard drive becomes identical to the MacBook drive?
    Any advice welcome - thanks!

Get your PB restore discs, and preform a erase & install. Once the install is complete, you want to transfer from a old Mac (in the setup assistant). Be aware, iMovie 7 (08') will not work on a G4, but iMovie 6 does (08'). Then you're set to go with the PB, then with the MacBook, erase your HD with a very secure erase (7-pass erase or 35-pass erase) with disk utility on the install disc (under the Utilities menu). Then reinstall. Whenever I get rid of computers, I let the install complete, then as soon as the music stops, I hold the power button for several seconds until it turns off, that way, the new owner gets to set up the MacBook (including the user account), then don't turn it on again. • Transferring hard drive files to external hard drive for backup  have old tiger osx 10.4

how do I copy and transfer hard drive to external hard drive for backup of everything?

You can clone the entire drive to the external, provided you have more space available on the external drive than the total of your used filespace on the main drive.
Carbon Copy Cloner will perform the clone for you.

  • Transferring Hard Drive

I'm getting a new Macbook Pro and I plan to add a new Solid State Drive into it with my account from my previous IMac.  My Question is, can I still get ILife 11 free if I use an account from my other computer. Does the software come with the Macbook Pro.  Thanks for your Help!

I don't plan to install it on two computers.  When I get my New Computer I know that ILife 11 comes pre-installed if I choose to use a fresh operating system. What I'm saying is that I want to use the account and operating system from my old computer on my new computer.  My old account has ILife 08 on it and if I put my old account on my new computer is it then at all possible to get ILife 11 installed instead of just having ILife 08. I'm wondering if apple would give me a free download of ILife 11 considering it comes with the computer anyway.  Sorry for the confusion.

  • Can anyone help. I need to reuse my SDHC cards and transfer footage from an ongoing profect to a hard drive. Can i edit from the Hard drive or am I better transferring info striaight from camera to time line

Hi I am using a JVC GY-HM100 camera which is meant to work well with final cut pro.  I have an ongoing project but need to save money and resuse the SDHC cards that are currently full of footage.
Would I be better off transferring the footage straight to the time line (as rumour has it you can do this with this camera) or store the footage on a hard drive and edit it later without risk of losing the footage.
    Many thanks

    Thanks Linda,
Here's some more info for you:
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
Check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system. Do NOT import any of the settings etc from the old account - simply use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended - but remember, if you reinstall the system, and then use Migration Assistant (or anything else) to import all your old settings etc etc, you may well be importing the cause of the conflict in the first place.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less (about half that for Multicam). If you have a long project, work on short sections, make them into Compound Clips and then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Transfering I tunes Library to external hard drive?

    Hi,
The other day to free up space on my hard drive I transferred my Itunes Folder to an external hard drive. When I updated to 5.0 and went into preferences to point to the new location for the library I tunes does not recognize the library.
I have not synced up my ipod which has all my bought songs which of course are not backed up. So my question is can the library be on a external hard drive? And if not can I sync up my ipod so that the songs from the ipod will fill the new 5.0 and not lose my songs?
    Thanks
    Erik

    Hi
I have transfred all of my i tunes library to an external hard drive attached to my pc, but when i go to play music from the transfered library, a message comes up on screen : can not find roiginal file , do you want to locate it.
Can anyone help with this please?
    regards

The way that usually works best is to move the entire iTunes folder folder from the current location to X:\iTunes where X: is the letter of the external drive.
If you moved the iTunes Media folder "by hand" instead of using iTunes to relocate the media folder then:
Move the main iTunes folder to X:\iTunes
Move iTunes Media inside it as X:\iTunes\iTunes Media
Press and hold down the shift key as you click the icon to start iTunes
Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
(If iTunes opens normally/with an empty library close it and go back to step 3)
Click choose and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
If you still have a problem try my script FindTracks.

I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • Hi transfered my i tunes liberary via a hard drive to my new laptop. It wont let me play anything I've bought from i tunes saying computer is not registered. i have registered it and when i go through the register process it says it is registered?

Help. transfered my itunes liberary via a hard drive to a new lap top. wasnt easy, cant play any thing I bought on the old computer says this one not registered? The box that comes up has my VERY old email on it, I change this to my current one put in password and it says computer is registered. This then just goes around in circles! Any ideas?

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My hard drive that is sync to my ipad crashed! Good thing is all my photos were transferred to my ipad for viewing - now my quesiton is how do I back up my ipad on another computer without losing my pictures? can I back up my ipad on a external hard drive

My hard drive on my computer crashed!  This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive?  If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?
Thanks for your help - I am worried if I don't do something quick, my ipad will crash too!

Right.  You didn't read the post, you only read the title.
The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud.  The destination of the backup is irrelevant.
