Transferring home folder from Tiger 4.11 into a MacBook Pro  w/ Leopard

I just got word that my PB Aluminum 1.67 that was to be repaired via Apple is now
going to be upgraded to a Apple MacBook Pro
First of I'm (happily) shocked by this offer, and now I begin a new realm into intel technology
MacBook Pro, and now... Leopard! Which I didn't want to install on my Aluminum PB I went only
as far as Tiger 4.11.
My inquiry is on transferring my back up home folder from the Aluminum Tiger 4.11 to the MacBook
Pro using Leopard.
Is that at all possible so I can restore my passwords, etc..into Leopard.
I also have PhotoShop 6 and Microsoft X software, would this be a problem installing or using
in the MacBook Pro?
Just concern about software compatibility with this upgrade.
appreciate feedback.. Aimee

Check with the third-party software vendor to find out if there are any compatibility issues or if you will need to upgrade. Older software may be PPC-only. They will run on an Intel Mac through the Rosetta emulator, but upgrading to a Universal Binary version would be the better course of action.
See:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Generally, there should not be any migrating problems between the Intel versions of Tiger and Leopard other than third-party software may require upgrading for compatibility.

I transferred my files from a G4 to a new macbook pro, but I can't access my old songs in itunes. I clicked on library in itunes and get the mac page to access mp3 and acc files but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

  • Transfering i Tunes from another computer to my new Macbook Pro

    Hi
I have recently bought a new Mac Book Pro 15'. Prior to that I was using iTunes on my other notebook where I have all the songs and apps. Now When I am opening my iTunes from MBP it is blank and I need to transfer all my data from the other notebook to this machine. I tried syncing my IPhone with Itunes on MBP however it is removing all the data from my IPhone as theere is nothing to sync in my iTunes on MAC Kindly suggest how can I migrate from my previous notebook to this machine.

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
another option is to set up _*Home Sharing*_ on both computers, then transfer the content via your network. however, none of your ratings or playcounts would be retained. also, unless you have your artwork embedded in each file, you would have none of that.

  • Installing Tiger into new Macbook Pro with Leopard

I bought a new MBP with 10.5.2 leop. installed but i need to revert to Tiger. I cant seem to get the Tiger retail disk to install and tech support is baffled too. To make matters worse, according to my serial #, they say my MBP shipped with Tiger so theres no reason why it should not be installing. Also, my Tiger install disc says it can be installed on PPC, G3 G4 G5... im using intel. BUT, applecare says that some G5's were intel so the disc shold still be installing. Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work? And if their records show it shipped with Tiger, how did leopard get on it? I called the apple store and they say they dont open the boxes.

And if their records show it shipped with Tiger, how did leopard get on it?
I can conceive of this improbable course of events:
    1. Apple shipped some Macs with drop-in discs for installing for Leopard in addition to Tiger installers.
    2. Passing through security entering the U.S. from the manufacturer's country, the box was opened to check for dangerous articles, and repackaged, and they forgot to reseal it with the proper discs.
If this improbable set of events did happen, then the problem resides strictly with the shipping from the manufacturer's site, and the place you purchased it from needs to put in for a shipping claim.

  • Trouble transfering music to iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.6 from iTunes 11.1.5 on Macbook Pro Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I recently fixed my Macbook Pro and updated the software to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  I am having trouble syncing my iPhone with iOS 7.0.6 to my iTunes which is 11.1.5.  It gets stuck on step 4 of 4 "Waiting for changes to apply."   I've reset sync services and done a lot of research about what I can do to fix the problem to no avail.  I would appreciate any help availible.
    Thanks

I had the same issues, reloaded itunes, updated driver, blasted everything out, etc., did everything,  short of doing a rain dance.  I finally got it to sync by clicking the box "sync only checked songs and videos".  It also allowed me to sync books, etc.  Good Luck Bwerner25.

  • HT4527 After I transfered my music from my old PC to my MacBook Pro using an external hard drive, all of my songs appear with an exclamation mark next to them saying the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Help?

These are all the songs that I have purchased. I'm panicing! I feel like I did everything right with the transfer but maybe not. I need help!

Read this post and do the migration again, putting the library in a portable shape first if necessary.

  • Inputting audio/video into my macbook pro? with Apple DVI to Video Adapter?

I work with video, and am trying to save my minidv cam's life. is there a more direct way to input directly from a vcr/television into my macbook pro? because right now i'm having to input from my vcr/television into my minidv then into my macbook through firewire.
i was considering the Apple DVI to Video Adapter ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=724 17D66&fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/cables&nplm=M9267G/A#overview )
but i'm fairly certain that this is output-only. does anyone know if there is a way to input through it as well, or anything that works similarly?

I thought that cables and adapters worked the same going either direction. I believed that the only concern was the male or female end points on them. Not sure anymore though

  • I transferred home movies from VHS to DVD. How do I import the data into imovie.

I transferred home movies from VHS to DVD. I can open the data using the DVD Player but I cannot import data into imovie.  Any ideas?

Another option is to download the free app MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
After loading the DVD on your Mac, drag the icon onto Streamclip's window. From the menu choose File>Export to QuickTime then for Compression select the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). Adjust the quality slider from 50% to about 75% - that should give good quality at a reasonable file size. Leave other settings as they are and click on Make Movie. From the next box, choose a name for the file (it will be a .mov file) and a save location (say Desktop).
The saved .mov file can now be imported to an Event and edited if desired in iMovie.
Note that you may be asked to instal a file from Apple. It's named QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X. It's priced at US$19.99 and is available from the US Apple Store here:

  • Getting folder from older bookmarks list into current list

Through syncing between Safari on my MacBook Air and my iPad I lost a folder in my bookmarks list that is important to me. Through Time Machine I've recovered a version of the list that has the missing folder. I don't know how to get the folder into the current bookmarks list. Help appreciated.
Bookmark creation and editing of bookmarks is one area where Safari could in my opinion be significantly improved: The display of the bookmarks list when adding a bookmark is confusing and difficult to negotiate; there is no provision for sorting the bookmarks list; provision for editing the bookmarks list is primitive and cumbersome.
The value of having a backup bookmarks list is limited if the only thing you can do is replace the current list with the backup. It should be possible to move bookmarks and folders between the backup and the current list.

Thanks. I used Xmarks once, way back.
I find syncing of bookmarks through syncing of Safari through iCloud VERY confusing. With syncing activated, it is impossible to edit the bookmarks list on any device. As soon as you make a change, syncing converts it back to what's on the other devices. Even shutting the other devices down doesn't prevent that from happening.
I was able to edit the list on my MBA just now only by shutting wifi off, creating a copy of the edited list once I was done so if syncing overwrote the edited list I wouldn't have to do it all over again. When I turned wifi back on the changes persisted and have apparently been updated to my other devices.
Also confused about possible interaction between syncing through Xmarks and iCloud.
I can recover an older copy of my bookmarks list using Time Machine. But if I simply overwrite the current copy with the older one I lose any changes made since the last Time Machine backup.
So--I think--my question--how to get a folder from an older list into a newer one--is still unanswered.

  • I am transferring from a desktop iMac to a MacBook Pro.

I am transferring from a desktop iMac to a MacBook Pro.  We transferred all the data from the desktop to a second log in, and now I want to move all of my email accounts from the second log in to the first log in.  I went into the Apple store to get help, but that was hours ago, and it's still working on it.  Is it possible it will take hours to transfer 60,000 emails?  It appears to be downloading them from the server multiple times, because I have deleted some and they pop back up again and I have have marked them all read, and now a LOT of them are marked unread.  I use a gmail account.  Can you shed some light here, or do i have to go back to the Genius Bar?

We transferred all the data from the desktop to a second log in, and now I want to move all of my email accounts from the second log in to the first log in.
Can you explain this further. To another user account on your iMac? Or to your new Macbook?
Is it possible it will take hours to transfer 60,000 emails?
Yes. If you open the activity monitor in mail you can see this process occuring. "Updating cache directory, indexing, etc.).
From the menu bar Window > Activity
"It appears to be downloading them from the server multiple times, because I have deleted some and they pop back up again and I have have marked them all read, and now a LOT of them are marked unread.  I use a gmail account."
Is the problem of unreads showing back up when you mark as unread on one computer and check the other, or is it on your new macbook pro.
Please include your configuration in  Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Gmail > Mailbox behaviors in your reply.

  • HT3224 I am new to Mac and started transferring data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  Connection was lost once I started and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring Information' screen.  How do I get out of this screen to attempt the connection again?

II am new to Mac and was trying to transfer data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  The connection was lost however and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring you nformation' screen.  How do I get out of this screen so I can attempt the connection again?  Is it safe to force shut down of my Mac and will it still prompt me through all the setup process again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac and PC are connected by Ethernet, unplug and plug that cable again. If not, you have to turn off the MacBook by holding the Power button.
In the next startup, try to transfer your files again. It's important not to interrupt the transfer process, because in most cases, you will stop it and you won't be able to resume it

  • If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer?  also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.
