Transferring home videos on DVD to external harddrive through macbook

I want to transfer all our old home movies which are all on DVD to an external harddrive. I try dragging but that didn't work. I made a copy of the video and dragged to hard drive but that also didn't work. What do I do?

Hi - The movies were from several different video cameras all 8mm tapes originally. My husband burned the tapes onto DVD-Rs. I tried just dragging the video onto the external hard drive and I got an error message that says" The DVDVRF430 can not be moved because the OneTouch 4 (name of hard drive) can not be modified". I tried dragging it to a folder within the harddrive and got same message but said the folder could not be modified.
I then went into Imovie and played around. There is a way to copy the video through Imovie but the only option it gives me is to copy it to my mac harddrive. I thought I would be able to direct it to the external harddrive because It has a pull down bar but the only option is the mac internal drive.I have 19 years of videos and do not want them on my MAC harddrive but if I have to load them to the Mac then take them off to put on external I will - just seems like a long process of extra work.
I originally had a PC and all of the documents on the harddrive were from my PC which died. Is it possible that I need to do somehting to the the harddrive to recognize the mac? I have opened files on the external harddrive and edited them on the Mac and then saved them with no problem. I have had to change the programs a bit to make them compatible since many are older Word or Microsoft Works files but that is all.

  • Transferring Video Projects to and External Harddrive

Can I transfer a video project to an external harddrive and delete the original from my computer. If so, whats the best way to do it"?

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
Depending on the circumstances yet to be exchanged, the easy way out would seem to be to archive the existing project via the program's Project Archiver/Copy Option with the Copied Folder pointed to the external hard drive. That folder will contain the project file (project.prel) and its assets including copies of source media that went into the project. Then you can delete the project file, its assets, and source media from the Local Disc C. DO NOT DELETE SOURCE MEDIA ON LOCAL DISC C THAT ARE ALSO BEING USED IN ANOTHER ACTIVE PROJECT.

After that you can work with that particular program from that location.
Before you start a new project, you can set the project Save In: (new project dialog) and program assets (including Scratch Disks) to the external hard drive, best to its own folder.
In this type of situation, the prime concern to to avoid media disconnect issues. If you move or delete source media that went into a project after the project's save/close, you are going to have major problems with "Where is file....?" and the like.

  • I am trying to get a good copy of my home video on DVD using IDVD.  On editing the video all the viewing screens show the video perfectly in HD.  When I burn the video to DVD all the end results are buzzy with squiggly lines.  Any fix?  Thanks?

    Hi
There are several layers to this Q
    A. There are no HD in DVD - DVD is as standard only SD-Video what ever tools used to produce it !
iDVD or DVD-Studio Pro or Roxio Toast™ - will only make SD-Video on DVD
    B. DVD can be better or worse
    • Using "Share to iDVD" is no good way - Better is Share to Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD as result will be worse)
    • Using iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools to chose if highes quality is of importance - iMovie up to HD6 or FinalCut any version is far better as they send over all lines to iDVD and not only every second one.
    • Using Right encoder quality depending on movie and Manu duration is very important
    • Use of high quality brand of DVD - is important - I use Verbatim DVD-R
    • Type of DVD - DVD-R plays on more DVD-Players (even old ones)
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4 - resulting in less burn errors - plays on more players
    • I secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up Mac OS hard disk as iDVD and Mac OS needs this and it can not be taked from other hard disks - has to be here.
    • What You feed iDVD does matter
    Video codecs
    Audio file formats
    Photo file formats

  • Apple TV getting video or audio from external harddrive on wifi N

The only way i can get media to sync is to put it on my mac book pro's harddrive. The external is connected by the airport new N. Has anyone had this problem, this bothers me to have to move data from a wireless external harddrive to the powerbook, just to get it to sink. And yes, I have Itunes looking at the external harddrive. But when i point it local, it works fine. Help please.
Or apple work on a patch for this. Don't make me do this much longer..

I keep my music and unviewed video on my MacBook Pro's hard drive. I have a master backup of my music and all videos, both viewed and unviewed, on an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a desktop PC connected by Ethernet to the AEBS and its iTunes Library points to the master copy of files stored on the external hard drive. I synched my local iTunes Library on my MacBook Pro with my AppleTV and, when I want to watch a video that is not synched to the AppleTV, I stream it from the remote iTunes Library on the external hard drive via my desktop. Since the external drive and PC are both hardwired to the AEBS, I assume I am getting n speed over the network to the AppleTV.

  • Getting home videos from DVD to FCE via Handbreak

I have home videos that are on DVD, and that's the only place they reside in the world. I want to get them to FCE so I can combine some different shots. I'm using Handbreak to get the video off the DVD's, but when I did it FCE was unable to read the resulting file. Is there a certain setting in Handbrake that I should use to make this work??
    Thanks

I'm so happy to be able to finally help someone because I had this same problem and have it licked now.
First, you need MPEG Streamclip. Get that here http://www.squared5.com/
Then you need the MPEG Quicktime Component, get that at http://www.apple.com/quicktime (link is on the left side of the page)
But your DVD in, open MPEG streamclip, then file > open DVD (just click on the CD in finder) and hit open and follow the instructions.
Once that's done (and the video should play in the streamclip window), export it by doing ... APPLE+E, compress to Apple DV-PAL, quality up to 100% and 25 frames per second, sound should be on uncompressed.
Once you do that, just open FCE, file > import > file (APPLE+I) and select the file that you just made in streamclip. It's that easy. I'm so happy I've found this solution. Hope you can get some use out of it.

  • Transferring VHS Video onto DVD via Macbook

    Hi
I've been given a large project and need some (simple) help.
Its to transfer about 40 VHS tapes onto CD,s.
Help please as How/what do I need/ is there any step by step instructions?
    Thanks

    Hi Nigel
First, please be clear about exactly what you need to do. You need to transfer video from VHS, but if you need to burn video to a playable disk, you need to create DVDs, not CDs (which are for audio or data only). If you're unsure about this, check with the person who gave you the project.
Next, you need a VHS video player with video outputs. It's most likely that you'll have RCA-style "composite" video, which is a yellow connector, along with red and white connectors for the audio. You may also have an S-video connector, which is a round multi-pin socket. If it's a newer VCR, you might even have component video, which is a series of three red, blue and green sockets.
The third part of the equation is getting that video into your computer. With a MacBook, you don't have any kind of video-in socket, and even if you had a Mac Pro desktop, you would still need to purchase a video capture card to get the video in.
However, Macs (except for the very newest MacBooks) all have Firewire ports, which is an industry-accepted way to import video. If you have a video generating device plugged into your Firewire port, you will be able very easily to pull it into iMovie, or Final Cut (Express or Studio). So if you can borrow/rent a device to convert the video to a Firewire signal, that's the best solution. You can use a digital camcorder that has composite video in and Firewire out (usually the most readily available solution), and any professional "video deck" will also do this for you. There are conversion boxes available, but they are quite an investment if you have to buy them.

  • Help transferring home videos

Hi everyone. I hope someone here can help with an issue I'm having. I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro to upgrade from my 2008 Macbook. I bought a USB drive and so far was able to transfer all my photos and music. I also have about 20 home videos on my old Macbook that were shot either by an iPhone of my husbands old Android. All the videos can be viewed just fine on the old laptop, however only 10 of them export onto the USB fine. The other ones for some reason cannot be played and come up just as a black screen in Quicktime. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Accessing an external harddrive through Airport Extreme

    Hello,
I have read that one should be able to access an external harddrive that is connected to a airport extreme from any computer that has the internet.
    Is this true?
How does one find the Internet address?

    Anybody got any ideas?

  • External Harddrive and MacBook Pro

    Hello Everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to view my post.
I just recently purchased a new 15" MacBook Pro. I originally had a HP laptop in which I ran iTunes for Windows.
Instead of storing my music on my HP laptop's HD I bought a 320GB external harddrive and had iTunes re-route to the external (i.e. using iTunes Prefs, letting iTunes read from the external).
I opened iTunes on my new MacBook Pro and telling it to read from the external as I did with my HP laptop, but when I tried to import CDs to my library I received an error saying that the "required folder" could not be found. In turn, it won't let me import CDs to the external.
How can I fix this problem? I don't want to store my music on my MacBook Pro.
Thank you again for reading this and taking of your time to help me with my issue. God bless!

  • Can't play home videos made on ipod touch 4g  through apple tv 2

The videos downloaded from itunes work, but I bought the apple tv so i could watch my personal videos made with the ipod touch 4g, 1 out of 10 tries it works after exiting the camera and going back in but it only allows one video to be watched.

LOL OK for some odd reason now I can't access my videos made with ipod touch 4g through the photos icon. The "Albums" title sits on top of the "camera roll" folder making it impossible to touch and access it. Anyone else have this problem? I think I will just return my apple tv 2, it's just been frustrating.

  • Transferring old videos to DVD with Satellite M70

Is it feasible to connect a video recorder to a Satellite M70 in order to transfer video tape recordings to DVD? If it is, what cable do I need?

    Hi there,
since your notebook is only equipped with an TV-OUT, you cannot just connect a video recorder to your machine, because to do this you will need an Video-IN.
The only chance you have is to purchase a external video grabber for PCMCIA or USB.
With such Video Grabber youre able to receive external video signals and to record/edit them.
Heres a link which shows you an example what I mean:

    Hope that will help you.

  • Transferring home videos to Mac

I'm new to Mac and want to the easiest method/what equipment I need to transfer tapes through a VHS recorder onto the Mac hard drive in order to edit film and eventually burn DVDs of the final edited product; also direct from video camera tape format onto Mac which I assume is pretty much the same process.
Any thoughts for a real non-tecchie? And in Noddy language please!

I was in this same boat about 3 years ago when I first got my mac, partly for this very purpose. I wanted a self contained, easy way to transfer Vhs to DVD with user friendly software. 3 years later, I'm still trying to figure it out and am finally on my way.
First, as the others mentioned, you will need a DV converter. I just bought a Canopus ADVC 110 and it works pretty slick. As the others mentioned, it is possible to use a DV camera to import the video directly to Imovie, but it sounds like in the UK you may have issues with cameras.
Another thing to consider is what software to capture the video with.
I wanted to use Imovie because it was easy and in the Mac to begin with, what I found out after many forum questions and experimenting at home was that Imovie, at least the version I have, only imports every other line of resolution of the videos. So when I captured a home movie from my video camera into IMovie and then used a software program (I used Toast) to make a DVD it looked like garbage on my TV. The verison of Imovie I have however is 08' (I think) so I'm not sure if the new version imports better quality now. I would check on that before you capture/import all your vhs into Imovie only to find out it's going to make your home movies look awful on a TV.
To combat this, I had to get Final Cut Express which I am now finally starting to learn how to use.
Once you determine how you are going to get the videos onto the Mac, either DV Converter or the right camera, then you need to decide if your Imovie will give you the right output of image quality, then burning the DVD's isn't too bad.
IDVD works pretty slick and there are videos you can watch on the Mac website that show you how to use it.
Like I said, I've used TOAST a few times and it's pretty easy and user friendly as well.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • How do I save Home Videos on DVD to Macbook Pro?

So I got deleted before because Apple decided that I was using "TOAST 8.0" to make copies of DVDs. I just want to take my work VIDEO STORIES and transfer to IMOVIE or some other 3rd party program. Again I used TOAST and audio and video was out of sync in part of my DVD copy, Other video was poor quality and other video that had sound would not record with sound.
    Ideas?

I cannot disclose any specific help on this topic, seeing as anything I post will be deleted and go against the Terms of Use. I don't want to have my account disabled, so the best help I can give you is advice: Google is your friend.

  • Transferring 8mm videos to dvd using imovie

I have several 8mm videos that I'm wanting to transfer to dvd. I have an old Sony ccd-trv212 that I can use, but don't know how to plug it into my Macbook. I've read that I need a FireWire transfer box, but some people have used only USB converters. Anyone know what I need?

I've read that I need a FireWire transfer box
Yes, that is true, USB is not to good with video.
All analog to digital video converters use firewire.
To get your 8mm video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC300/index.php
If you like to make DVDs, give iMovie 06 a try.
I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
The Web site below has a good comparison of iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.
