Transferring iDVD 4 project to iDVD5

We saved an iDVD 4 project but the original iMovie folder was deleted. When we went to burn on iDVD it kept on freezing. We therefore transferred it to the Mini Macs via a lacie hard drive. When we went to burn the project on iDVD5 a message appeared informing us that Video and Audio files were missing. This is for a school project and several children are unable to have a record of their work. Any help gratefully received.

Unfortunately all of the iLife apps use reference files pretty heavily, which means the content in your iDVD project is actually only a reference link to the original source. If that source is moved, renamed, or deleted, iDVD will be unable to find the material. This was true with any version of iDVD. Did you archive your iDVD project prior to moving it to the new computer or merely just move the files.
You should have archived the project if you were not going to transfer all of the original source material (including iMovie, iPhoto, or whatever else you added). If you didn't archive the content and you indeed did nuke the source files, the iDVD project is most likely beyond recovery.

  • Project Duration error message when loading short iDVD 5 project in iDVD 6

My iDVD 5 project is very short - a total of about 7 minutes (including video and an audio loop for the menu). The video clips were exported as DV NTSC non-self-contained quicktimes from Final Cut Pro.
When I attempt to load the project into iDVD 6, I get the following error message:
    Project duration
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn this project, remove some content.
Twirling down the triangle for more info gives:
    Project:
    - total project duration: -2147483648:-2147483648 minutes
    - total project capacity: 429496729 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
Also, trying to open the Project Info window crashes iDVD.
I haven't attempted burning, but I'm pretty sure it'd be a waste of a DVD.
My only thought is that iDVD 6 somehow is misreading the non-self-contained quicktimes, but I've never had an issue with them before, and it'd be a drag to redo all my projects with space-hogging self-contained versions.

Many people had trouble opening iDVD 5 projects in iDVD 6 when it first came out. My one iDVD 5 wouldn't open at all.

  • How to save an iDVD 08 Project in progress?

Once I get my iDVD 08 project all set with theme, music, movie, buttons etc and I do a save so I don't lose what I already have. When I reopen the saved project by double clicking the iDVD icon, items are not the way they were when I saved them. Some are missing, moved from their location, theme missing, buttons missing. But if I open the iDVD application first, everything is the way I saved it. Could this be a bug?

It is probably not a bug, but a preference file that has become corrupted. Whenever an app doesn't perform the way it is supposed to, the first thing to suspect is a corrupted preference file. You are probably not old enough to remember this maxim, but trashing the preference file can fix many problems of performance.
So, with iDVD closed, go to your Home folder (YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. Don't worry; iDVD will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Reopen iDVD and see if it is ok now.

  • Changing TV Standard - CRASH! Opening iDVD'04 project

I raised this before, was hoping that the 7.0.2 update was going to fix but no.
Is anyone out there from Apple? Helloooo! You have a defective product that I paid
for and can't use. do you care?
This is the displayed message when opening a project that was made with iDVD '04
    "Changing TV Standard
Changing the TV standard will require iDVD to encode all previously encoded assets again."
Which is total BS anyway as the standard has not changed, it was 4:3 PAL in the project and it is 4:3 PAL in the preferences
    Rapidly losing faith with Apple.

    ##**## Not encoding -> exit(5)

As a test I took an old iDVD 4 project on my 933 mhz G4 running Panther and saved it as an iDVD ARCHIVE with include Themes and Encoded Assets checked.
I then opened it on my 1.33 Ghz G4 Powerbook running Tiger and iDVD '08.
It 'sort of worked'. Things opened fine but I had a broken asset warning on video in the menu button. I was able to drag and drop the movie on the menu in the Map view to get rid of the broken asset warning, but the movie in the menu button doesn't play. The projects preview fine, but without the movie playing in the button.
Conclusion: an iDVD 4 PROJECT ARCHIVE with Themes and Encoded Assets included DOES open in iDVD '08, but may require some fixing.

  • IDVD 6: Menu buttons don't show up from iDVD 5 project

I have an iDVD 5 project that I opened in iDVD 6. It consists of 3 slideshows. (There was an issue with it not seeing the iPhoto 6 photos, but that's another issue I posted in the iPhoto forum.)
The buttons that show the slideshows do not show up in iDVD 6. But if I go to map view, the slideshows show up and I can go into them and see all the slides are there and I can preview them. (Well, when it doesn't crash.)
I tried creating new menus but those don't show up either (although, oddly enough, at one point I added a new menu and the title of one of the slideshows showed up!). This project had the Travel theme in iDVD 5.
So in summary: the menu buttons to start the slideshows don't show up when I open the project in iDVD 6. They also don't show up in the title (main) menu when I preview it in iDVD 6. I haven't yet tried actually burning a DVD.
    Any suggestions?

The -34506 error. Welcome to a world of frustration and wasted evenings. There are plenty of threads here with suggestions on 'rules' for setting up your slideshows in iMovie, clearing caches, creating new users etc. These have fixed this particular error for some people.
    Good luck!
    Simon
    ## Oops! - I should have read your post more carefully the first time. Hey, at least you have a new number, even if it does provide as little real information as to what the source of the error is as the one I mention!

  • IDVD 5 Projects Destroyed by iDVD 2

By mistake I opened an iDVD 5 Project with iDVD 2. The project was immediately destroyed and the file which was originally several GB reduced to just 72KB. The file was destroyed even though I chose NOT to save it. Is this a known problem and can I retrieve my project.

Actually, these projects are not that complex. straight creation from iMovie chapters and only a little cleanup in iDVD.
I think it has something to do with the way iDVD handles favorites (since these were all based on favorites). In HOme/library/applications support/iDVD there is a folder called Favorites for new favorites I create in iDVD 6. The rest of my old favorites are in a folder called Installed Favorites. Those in "favorites" work while those in "installed favorites" don't work. Even though both are based on standard Apple Themes. Irony is the themes are in "installed themes".
Does that make sense to anyone? I could try moving files between these two folders, but I don't want to get this any more messed up thatn it already is.

  • Getting iDVD 1 Project into iDVD 6

Does anyone know the upgrade path? Do I have to install and upgrade from 1 to 2 to 3 etc. all the way up to 6 or what?
What is the shortest method? Can I skip any versions?
    Thanks!
    Dual Gig PMG4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, for my client, he needs to use this project because it is a template he uses for his business.
He used to have iDVD on his old machine, but upgraded to a Powermac G5 Quad. He never updated iDVD cause there was no need. But now he has iDVD6 (came with the G5) and it won't open the iDVD 1 project.
The new machine wont run iDVD 1 and his project is on the new machine and iDVD 6 wont open it. But he needs to use this project. He uses it as a template for the work he does for his clients.
I know there is a huge jump from 1 to 6. But we're kinda stuck since he can't go back to his old machine and he needs the project itself, not just some video off of it.
I have all the versions of iDVD and was just thinking of updating his project version by version. Install 2 then update, install 3, then update and so on..... I was just wondering if I can skip a version or two here, maybe go from 1 to 3 and then from 3 to 6, etc....
There is no info on Apple Support as to what versions of older projects the various iDVDs will open (i.e. 6 will open 5,4 and 3 projects, etc.) So what I need to know is how I can update the project to eventually get it into 6, if possible at all. I think my method will work, although it will take time, But the client needs to NOT lose the project.
Thanks again for the responses guys.

  • Can iDVD 6 projects be burned on a PC with Nero 6?

The subject line pretty much tells it all...
I am about to buy iLife '06, but only have a Combo Drive in my PowerMac G4. My Windows PC is better equipped to master and burn DVDs, etc., but I want to use my Mac for working with home movies. Does anyone know if saved iDVD 6 projects can be moved to a Windows PC and burned to DVD using Nero 6? I'd be happy with this process as it wouldn't be terribly inconvenient, and I wouldn't need to invest in a DVD burner for my Mac if not necessary.
Bottom line... I suppose I will not invest in iLife '06 if this doesn't work, as I could just work with video projects on my PC.
Thank you for any helpful feedback on this subject.
EDIT: I suppose I would also be comfortable with exporting saved iMovie HD projects to my PC for DVD mastering and burning if the iDVD 6 step creates a kink in the process. So, is there anything about iMovie HD projects that makes them incompatible with PC software such as Nero?

That may be a lite version of Toast.
It is not. One thing this guy knows how to do is shop
See here. 107€ is cheaper than the retail price of Toast in Finland. I know the download from Roxio is 99 dollars, etc., but who in their right mind would buy Toast for anywhere close to that when you can get the full version included with a LaCie d2 for 107€ ?
See here also, for the specs from LaCie. The FireWire d2 includes Toast 7 Titanium.

  • Changing TV Standard - CRASH! Opening iDVD'04 project  - REVISITED

I raised this some time ago:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7488339#7488339
Basically opening an iDVD '04 project in iDVD '08 fails. Either hangs or quits.
This still happens with 7.0.3. despite the fact that Apple support acknowledged the error over 6 months ago.
Have emailed the first line people on the case but last time I tried that I never got a response, I suspect they have left.
Anyone know of a general email address I can use, I do have a case number.
I have not tried the Archive option yet as suggested by someone in referenced thread.

As far as I can see, your question was answered in your earlier thread.
iDVD 4 is pretty old, and much has changed in iDVD 7/8.
I would suggest using your copy of iDVD 4 to complete the project.

  • DVD studio and iDVD 6 projects and templates ?

I have a couple of projects made in iDVD which I would like to use as a starting point and combine into a DVD Studio 4 project(s). I see on the forum that there is a possibility to import iDVD4 project, but not v.5 or 6. Having made some iDVD stuff "on the road" it would be an advantage to be able to make a more permanent solution in DVD Studio without having to spend a lot of time redoing everything, templates and all...
1, Is it way of saving/ exporting iDVD 6 projects as iDVD 4?
2, Is there any 3rd party software that could be used to import iDVD projects into DVD Studio?
3, Is there any way of at least importing some iDVD 5 or 6 templates?
4, Is there any source for DVD studio templates that resemble the iDVD 5 or 6 ones?
5, Is there any source for additional DVD studio templates?
6, Is there an Apple "fix" for this missing import issue on the way?
thank you in advance for any ideas and info

The answer is the first four questions is NO.
Google DVD Themepaks and you'll find additional themes for DVD SP.
You can extract the menu VOB from the iDVD disc image using MPEG Streamclip and use that as an asset for a menu, but that requires no menu buttons to start with.
    best wishes

  • Can't save iDvD 08 project file

Why cant I save a iDVD 08 project file thats been saved to a DVD? I saved a project file to a TDK DVD (its 2 Gb). I needed the space at the time, now I want to work on it again. When I try to copy it to my hard drive I keep getting an error saying it cant read certain files. Only 2Mb makes it over. I tried the copy/paste and the drag/drop copy ways. Neither works. What gives?
    Ideas?
    Steve

True but it's the necessary approach to saving a project that requires further editing in the future (otherwise original files get moved / assets may change locations and will confuse iDvd)
    Quoting the Help Menu:
    Saving an iDVD project
As you work on your DVD project, you should save it periodically to safeguard your work. When you want to move or back up your finished project to another computer, you can archive it.
Archiving your project creates a copy of the project, keeping all of its elements together and linked within the project file. It can take awhile to archive a large project, but after you do, you can move the file to another computer or hard disk, and then open it at any time for further editing or burning to a DVD.
You can also save your project as a disc image. Saving a disc image of your project means creating a file that is formatted just like a finished DVD, except it’s not actually burned on a disc.

  • Transferring iDVD project from one computer to another?

I have a MacBook that has a combo drive (it can burn CDs but not DVDs). I have Quicktime Pro and I used it to download a video from the internet. I edited it using Quicktime Pro and I was going to burn it on a DVD but I just realized that my MacBook doesn't burn DVDs. I have a friend who has an iMac that has a super drive (it can burn CDs and DVDs). Instead of spending money to buy an external DVD burner, can I email my project to him and then burn it on his computer? If not, can I store my project on a flash drive, then put it on his computer, and then burn it? If I could do one of these options that would be great because I don't want to buy an external DVD burner if I don't have to. Thanks.

Just to add to the excellent advice already posted. If you are done with your iDvd project and no additional changes are to take place then use the first link provided above. However, if you plan on making even the slightest change/s then follow directions for the second link which was kindly provided for you above.

  • Warning for those with unfinished iDVD 5 projects

If you have an unfinished iDVD project in V5 and it includes media from an iPhoto 5 library there are a couple of steps you'll need to take to keep your project from getting trashed.
iPhoto 6 changes the folder structure of it's library folder drastically. iDVD will not be able to link to files in the library and to do so manually would be impossible unless it was only one or two. So here's what you need to do.
1 - make a backup of your current iPhoto Library folder. Name it "iPhoto6 Library".
2 - when you launch iPhoto 6 the first time, use the Option key and when asked to locate your library select the "iPhoto6 Library" folder.
Now when you launch iDVD 6 and select the unfinished project it will look in the old library folder to find the files and you're off and running. Then when you've completed the project you can trash that iPhoto Library folder to regain space again.

Even better advice: Don't upgrade until you finish your iDVD5 project. I don't know how many times I've seen people posting here who have lost an important project because they upgraded in the middle of working on it.
    Also: backup, backup, backup!

  • Internal dvd drive no longer plays idvd burned projects

My internal dvd drive has been acting strange lately. It will play mass produced dvds but does not play my idvd projects, which it used to do. Anyone know if cleaning will help? If so, can you recommend a cleaner for an imac dvd drive?
If cleaning won't help, am I better off going to apple and having it replaced, or simply buying a compatible external drive? If an external, any recommendations?
    Thanks!

You can use any proprietary lens cleaner for a DVD/CD player, except the ones using a liquid.
When you have cleaned the Superdrive, do a bit of maintenance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

For a full description of how to resolve Disk, Permission and Cache Corruption, you should read this FAQ from the X Lab:

  • Idvd final project has dead spots in sound

I recently created a slideshow in idvd where I imported photos and music. The music was downloaded from itunes. When the project was complete and burned to a Memorex write/re-write DVD, there were dead spots in the sound when I played it back on my TV/DVD player. The songs would just cut out for 3-5 seconds, then keep playing. Does anyone have any advice? Could there be an issue with the DVD I chose to use? Could fingerprints on the DVD account for this problem? Should I be looking at the idvd program as the problem?

    Hello, rkotlow,
    Welcome to the discussions.
First, Memorex disks are notorious for poor performance. You should be using good DVD-R disks such as Verbatim or Maxell. You should also burn at a slower speed, not faster than 4x.
Make a disk image first, using Disk Utility, that way you can check it to see if there are any audio problems:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6733.html
You can then burn your disks from within Disk Utility, selecting the burn speed:
