i just bought a new iMac and used a firewire at the initial set up to transfer all the information from my last iMac G5 to my new iMac. It had iLife 06', and now I think that my new iMac that is supposed to have iLife 08' is running on the 06' stuff. Which is now not recognizing the iSight video camera..... Help

Upgrading hard disk in the new aluminum iMacs

Hi all. Is a hard disk upgrade on the new aluminum iMacs something that a seasoned computer geek can do by his/her-self at home? Will it void the Apple warranty if it's not done by a certified specialist?
I want to pick up a new 20" iMac, and I'm having a hard time deciding whether I need to get a big disk now or if I can upgrade at home, on my own, down the road.
I did some research (on this site) on upgrading the hard disk in the last rev of iMacs, and it looks pretty simple. I also noticed that, according to Apple, as long as you adhere to their procedure (only touch the brass colored screws!) you are well within your rights under the warranty to replace the hard disk.
I could not find out if this policy was the same for the new aluminum models. Does anyone have an answer? I don't NEED a 500 or 750GB internal hard disk right now... but I'm sure I will WANT one at some point not too far down the road.

Apple can't legally "void" your warranty for just opening the cabinet. They can refuse to cover any damage you do -- but unrelated failures are still covered. Apple doesn't own the warranty -- you paid for it, and under US law, they are required to honor it.

Windows on new aluminum iMacs

I was wondering if anyone knew what version windows I can run on the new aluminum imacs. I'm curious of the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit windows xp and vista xp. Can anyone simply explain the difference and if they had luck, no luck with the 64 bit version? I honestly have no clue the difference between 32 and 64, but figured the 64 bit should be better. I need to buy windows but there are what seems like hundreds of different versions, I'm lost. My debate is between XP or Vista and 32 bit vs 64 bit. Thanks.

How do I selectively transfer apps from my 24" imac to my new 27" imac, both machines use mountain lion and I have a TimeMachine backup of my old imac.I have read the article "How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac" but it does not seem to allow me to pick and choose which apps I want to transfer to my new machine.

No, you can't pick and choose. So migrate all apps and then delete the ones you don't want.
Or install the apps from disk or from the app store. Copying will leave you without certain supporting items.

** Transferring from External FW LaCie to new Aluminum iMac **

Is it possible to transfer a CCC external FW HD to a new Intel Aluminum iMac? What I am trying to do is transfer my entire HD to my new iMac but its more economical for me to sell my G5 in New York and buy my iMac in Portland, OR + save taxes. If I back up my internal 250GB HD from my PowerMac G5 via CCC to external LaCie (FW400), can I copy onto a brand new iMac from the external or do I HAVE to go from machine to machine?

Hi Chad.
If your "CCC" means a "carbon copy clone" of your previous mac system, then the answer is a NO.
To put it simply, the (OS) systems run inside a G5 and an Intel Mac *is entirely different*, they do not mix.
So let's say you have previously clone/copy from a G5 mac, the most you could do is to (re)copy/clone back to a "same system" G5, and *not to an Intel*. Same as an Intel, you do not copy or clone its entirety to a G5. The result will cause the upmost unstability to your OS system that may result in crashes etc.
The only files you can manually copy over to your new Intel mac are your data files, e.g. your photos, music, your email data, preference files etc.
Anyway, you would have to install all your application from the ground up in your new Intel mac, you should upgrade them to the Universal versions. And if you use a lot of third-party utilities and shareware, same thing, download the latest version, which should be of Universal versions and install them fresh into your Intel mac.
Search more in this forum with keywords like "migration" to get a better and more in-depth understanding of migrating from a G5 to an Intel Mac.

Internal temperature gauge in new aluminum iMac?

I've run several temperature reporting programs since switching to the new 24" iMac and so far have not been able to get a reading. At the moment I'm running iStat and it isn't reporting temperature: are there other programs that do? Or are internal temperature gauges absent from the new iMac? Thanks in advance.

I have a new 24" 2,4 imac too and i can use istat menus without any problem, with all the details as with the older imac.
But im experiencing the same problems with the heat. It gets very hot and istat tells me that the disk bay and the gpu are over 56 celsius degrees (135 farenheit) all the time (even if im working with imovie or doing nothing but reading some feeds). And the fans are always running at the same speed, even if the processor is being used at the maximum capacity or minimum. I think we'll probably have to wait for a firmware update.

Can I use the memory from my 2007 iMac in a new 2012 iMac?

Finally putting down my 2007 iMac and buying a 27" new iMac and I'm wondering what is worth salvaging from my old computer. I'm pretty certain that it has either a fan or thermal compound issue (it runs super hot) but I what about the RAM. Is it possible to use it in the new or should I just recycle the whole machine?

The old RAM won't be compatible with the new generation iMac, but you may be able to sell it privately quite easily.

New Aluminum iMacs

After all these problems with the iMac G5s (the 2-inch white flat screens), I want to know if there are any similar problems with the new narrower, glossy-screened, aluminum ones? As much as I'd love to upgrade to one of these, I certainly don't want to if I'm stuck with any similar problems.

I have an intel iMac and have had not a single problem with it in the past 18 months. Get a new one and don't worry about it, they are reliable and problem free. Although no computers can be guaranteed to be 100% perfect, the intel iMacs have been much more reliable than the G5s.

New aluminum iMac and firewire drive

My school recently placed an order for a lab of iMacs and found out yesterday that we will be getting the new model (20 inch).
We had been using old G4 towers with Final Cut Express and external firewire 400 drives.
Since the new iMac will only have a single firewire 400 port can anyone suggest our best options for capture/playback via firewire 400 and also using our existing firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drives? Is there a firewire 800 to 400 adapter that will allow us to use the faster port as a second 400 port?

I think the adapter for converting FW800 to FW400 is the best option in your case. In my case, my iBook only has one FW400 port and I opted for a Belkin FW Hub to allow capture from my camera to my FW400 external HD. I've heard this is not ideal, but it works for me. Would love to get a new iMac one day.
I believe the reason FW hubs are not recommended is because you can end up splitting the bandwidth. Essentially you might end up with FW200 if two FW400 devices are hooked up to the hub. Anybody else know?

I've seen some discussions about issues like this but none that have a solution. I had an imac a couple years ago and transferred all my home movies to dvd using imovie (4 or 5?) and idvd. They play fine on my television.
I now have an intel imac and would like to use it to make ISO files of the dvd's so I can stream them to my tv using a mediagate server. My understanding is that I load the dvd, open disk utility and use it to make the iso file. I have tried six of my dvd's and every one is rejected after DU tries for a few minutes, accompanied by an error "Unable to create XXX.drc input/output error." Some of that wording may be slightly off, but it's close.
Is there some setting I have failed to properly set? I can play the dvd's in dvd player so they seem to still be good. But I can't copy them.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
An ISO file is basically [in my understanding] a diskimage.
[xxx.iso]. Since you created these DVDs yourself, they are not protected, so you don't need to rip them. You can simply open TOAST, take your DVD, copy the 2 folders on the DVD to the desktop, drag the folders [AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS] into TOAST [set to 'data', 'ISO 9660' 'select','new CD'] and then choose 'save as disk-image'. Naming is quite restrictive: 8 uppercase letters and/or numbers only.
This will give you an iso-file; a diskimage of the original DVD.

The best way is to make a backup of your old iMac. Do this either by cloning to an external hard drive through SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. OR Use Time Machine.
Then set up your new iMac using either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.
