Transferring iMac stuff to eMac

Hi. I got my new eMac this afternoon. Can anyone tell me (in the plainest English possible please!) how I can transfer files & applications from my old iMac G3 to the new eMac?
The G3 doesn't have Firewire facility, so I can't do it that way.
It's running OS 9.2 so I believe Setup Assistant won't be any use?
Am I right in thinking you can do it if you connect both machines with an Ethernet cable? How does that work?
I'd be grateful for any help, guys!
iMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x   new eMac Combo OS X 10.4

crackercrackpot,
I'll second Patrick's suggestion of using a USB thumb drive; they've gotten pretty inexpensive in the last year, with 1 GB models selling for less than 128 MB ones did a year and a half ago. The USB thumb drive will be quicker than CD-R, and USB support is built into OS 9. A thumb drive also makes it easy to sneakernet files around from one computer to another.
One cavet though: when moving files from OS 9 onto OS X, you have to watch out for how OS X handles the old OS 9 and earlier spit between data and resource forks in a file. A straight copy from OS 9 to OS X may leave the file on OS X looking like a Unix executable and unusable as the Mac application or file is it. Some file types (those without resource forks, such as JPEG picture files) can transfer 'as is' with no problems. For applications and some file types that mix data and resource forks, it's better to compress the source on the OS 9 Mac (using StuffIt if you have it, or any freeware binhex or zip utility --- check the OS 9 section of Version Tracker). Put the OS 9 applications and files in a transfer folder, compress the folder, copy it onto USB thumb drive, move the thumb drive to OS X, copy the folder onto the OS X hard drive, uncompress. After you've done that a few times, you'll find it takes longer to describe it than to do it.

    Hi Sonia,
While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.

I recently transfered everything from my emac to another one but now when I try to open iTunes I get the window that states: The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. The computer I transfered to had a bunch of files on it and I got full ownership of what was already there, so, how do I get to my iTunes library, I do have access as an administrator to the iTunes library (that works just fine) already there and I guess I must have had a newer version ofiTunes on my defunt eMac....

Tell us some version numbers please, of your Mac OS versions and iTunes versions on both computers (two eMacs yes?).

That is a pretty good guess.Try updating the second eMac's iTunes to at least the version that was on the first.

  • Netwok an iMac And a eMac

Can an iMac 333 with OS 8.6 be networked with an eMac 1.25 Ghz with OS 10.3.9. I am trying to netwok with a Linksys hub. Never had a problem with my old Power Mac and the iMac. Been trying to get these two to talk to each other for two days with no success. Thanks for any help.

I can get into the iMac from the eMac. Problem is getting into the eMac from the iMac. I'm working on changing over to OS 10 on the iMac, problem is my wife has an Expresso calendar that she dosen't want to part with just yet. So as time drags on I'm trying to learn the eMac and OS 10 before I inform her that Expresso is out the door. I have her working with Personal Organizer 4.5 that she kind of likes, but isn't ready to give up Expresso yet.

For no cost, you can try the open-source productivy suite LibreOffice. I don't have any AW files here to test but there are reliable reports that LibreOffice can open at least some AW files:

  • Transfering itunes from old emac to new imac

I recently upgraded to a new imac.  I transfered my files however it would not let me transfer my itunes, i believe because it was an older version.  I was able to transfer the music, however my playlist are gone, shopping cart, and purchased music etc.  I am not sure how to transfer the old into to the new computer.  I am also concerned about connecting my ipod to the new computer because I am afraid that it will delete the whole ipod.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

WELL... I finished the whole transfer last night... It actually didn't take that long (definitely not as long as the iphoto transfer took)... since the new computer is so fast. You actually don't need to download the songs again... they are there... in your old itunes folder... you just need to drag them into the new itunes application...
I lost all my playlists, which is bad, but I can live with it. it will give me a chance to go over some songs again, BUT the only thing that could not be recovered is album artwork from the songs I had purchased in Emusic.... And that was a lot of songs with great album graphics.... Somehow, itunes knows how to retrieve the art for songs purchased from itunes only...
Anyway, I agree that there should have been a better way, much less painful to do this.... but your songs should still be there... And IF I'M NOT WRONG, after you imported them to the new itunes, they are stored again, and you can erase the old folder....

  • Transferring iPhoto collection from eMac to new iMac

I'm stumped here. I tried burning CDR back-ups of my iPhoto collection (with Tiger installed) on the old eMac and then inserting the CDRs into the new iMac which has Leopard installed. That doesn't seem to work. Many of the photos are only a few kbs in size. Yet some are around 400 kbs too.
There must be an easy, efficient way to transfer photos. After all, these are Macs we're talking about!!
    Any ideas? Thanks from Canada.

I actually did copy iPhoto from the eMac to a portable HD. Still no luck. However what I did was drag the desktop iPhoto icon to the portable HD. It took awhile to transfer but it still doesn't seem to work. Maybe just dragging the iPhoto icon isn't the right way.
I find it odd that even when I burned iPhoto to a CDR from my eMac (this was when it was able to hold my photos, now there's way too many), it still wouldn't transfer to the new iMac's iPhoto. Again, I must be missing something fundamental here. I'm just so used to dragging and copying.

  • Transferring iLife stuff to a new iMac

    I bought my wife a new iMac 24. ( refurb ).
I want to transfer all my music, photos, movies, etc from an older PowerPC G5.
I don't want to transfer all my user settings as the new iMac will be setup for my wife.
I have an external HD with a SuperDuper clone of the G5.
What is the easiest way to transfer the media files properly to the new iMac?
    Thanks
    Len

What OS is the G5 running and what OS is on the intel? You could use Target Disk Mode to drag over the media files from the G5 to the intel.
If they are running the same OS, you could reverse clone from your SD backup, but everthing would come over, all your user settings etc, so Target Disk Mode is the way to go.

  • Ideas for migrating data to new iMac from faulty eMac?

My wife's old eMac died, but she was able to copy her user folder (all 58+ GBs) to an external drive prior to it finally giving up the ghost. It was copied via finder (not cloned or done via Time Machine), so it doesn't appear to have permissions set (i.e., I can mount the disk on another computer and access all her files).
She needed her new iMac set up right away to finish some work, so only a few files have been transfered.
I don't know if Migration Assistant can deal with the files, but I'd rather not migrate her stuff at this point. Migration Assistant isn't particularly granular (i.e., you can't choose which apps or which email to transfer - it's all or nothing). I'd rather access her home folder (as the user) to clean out her files (i.e., email, downloads, iTunes, iPhoto, etc.) prior to migrating them to her new computer. At a minimum, I want to log into her old account to backup her contacts to transfer over (or access them some other way).
Can I set up a user account for her on another computer (same name and pw), go into the advanced accounts settings and point to her folder on the external drive, and then log into her account? Or do I need to do some terminal work?
I believe the HDD was corrupted by the HW failure, but if Target Disk Mode is preferable for what I want to do, then it might be worth some troubleshooting on the eMac to get Target Disk working.

  • Transferring iMac 27" to my Macbook Pro and not using Migration Assistant?

    Hello,
I have my new iMac all set up and used Migration Assistant from my old iMac but created a new user account when I first set up my iMac and chose the do not migrate option. I didn't have the right Firewire cord so had to use Migration Assistant to transfer over after I was all set up with internet.
My new iMac is all up and running and I'd like to now migrate all my files to my Macbook Pro without doing it wirelessly (as it took over 24 hours to do last time). I'd like to transfer over files using my external hard drive.
elmac gave me some information in regards to another question which I edited here:
Hi, I use both TM & SuperDuper (2 different EHD's) I copy from SuperDuper (updated daily)(My Home Folder) iTunes you can enable sharing between computers and transfer that way..Photos from iPhoto Library..dragNdrop I use my Network, not as fast as FW..but easier on the mind. When I unpack my mac, I just set up with my email & Apple passwords..After that I repair Permissions then go about transferring.
Can I just transfer my home folder called Tuley from the main hard drive on my iMac to the user account section on my new Macbook Pro? Then I can transfer over the itunes folder etc.? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

Creating an account in System Preferences isn't the same as just putting a home folder into /Users/. The account needs to be created first.

    Yes.

  • Moving hard drive from iMac G5 to eMac 700Mhz

    Hi,
Hard drive in my eMac failed recently and on the top of that iMac G5 logic board stopped working (known problem). Now I wonder if I could move over iMac's hard drive (and Airport card) with 10.4 on it to my eMac. Is that possible? Or do I have to format it or clone it before move etc? How that can be done and what are my options here?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for clarifying on hard drives. I know emac hard drive is failing so I will replace that regardless. I just wonder what will be the best method to do that (I don't want use external drive for it). Regarding iMac G5 logic board; I have never seen that guide of Jim Warholic and I am appreciated for it. I have checked logic board but I am not sure if there is a problem with any of capacitors. What I have found is one of them look a bit bulge in compare to others; see pics here:

  • Problems transferring mail folders from eMac to Mac Mini

    Okay, so here’s the problem.
I just upgraded my boss - well, her computer, anyway - from an eMac running 10.2.8 to a Mini running 10.4.6. I am now having problems transferring mailboxes from the old computer to the new one. She is one of those people who have a couple of thousand messages in fifteen different mailboxes she’s created, so I really need to get them across to the new machine.
Here’s what happens when I try (both machines are ethernetted together)(if that’s a word). I open Mail (2.0.8) on the Mini, and go to ‘File’, then ‘Import Mailboxes’ (Mail on the old machine, if it matters, is 1.2.3). If I select ‘Mail for Mac OS X’, then ‘Continue’, I get the box asking for location. Select the eMac, go to ‘Users’, select the User’s folder, then ‘Library’, ‘Mail’, ‘Mailboxes’.
If I click on ‘Choose’ then, I get all of the mailboxes under ‘Items to Import’ as (for example) ‘inbox.mbox’. Click on ‘Continue’, and get a progress bar stating it is importing. It then tells me I can find them in the folder named ‘Import’ in the main Mail window. However, when I go to the ‘Import’ folder there are only three of the mailboxes, and they are all empty. No, I can’t figure out why just those three, since all of the boxes have mail in them. If I choose an individual mailbox folder I get the ‘No Valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found’ message. It will not allow me to choose the individual *.mbox files.
Okay, so if I follow the above path to the ‘Import Mailboxes’ dialog box, then select ‘Other’, and in the import box select ‘Mailboxes’ at the same location as above, I get one item to import, named ‘mbox’. Click on ‘Continue’, I get the progress bar, then the same message about the ‘Import’ folder.
But, once again, if I click on the ‘mbox’ folder under Imports it’s empty.
So I’m currently stuck. I could forward the old messages back to the same address, but frankly I consider that to be a silly enough idea that it might have been suggested by Microsoft. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go from here?
I apologize for the long windedness, but I’ve done tech support via email, and I personally always hated info-light messages like “My email keeps crashing. Why?” Please let me know if any of you need to know anything else. Thanks!
Mac Mini 1.5 Intel Core Solo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   I am currently whistling "On the Sunny Side of the Street"

"There are a couple of things you seem to be missing that might or might not have a bearing on your problems."
I'm not at all surprised. I've been missing things most of my life
"First, ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes is not the only place where mail is stored. You may want to also import the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver account folders."
Okay, that one sounds good... unfortunately, there's no joy so far. I've tried it importing as Mac OSX Mail. If I select the [email protected] folder, I get a checkbox for each of the folders, then a brief progress bar when I click 'Continue'. There is then only one of the folders I tried to import under the 'Import' folder, and it again appears to be empty. If I try selecting any of the individual mailboxes I get the 'No Valid Mail for Mac OSX Found' message.
I get a bit further using 'Other', but not a lot. Selecting the POP folder gives me two of the mailboxes (one labeled simply 'mbox') and 'Continue' another brief progress bar... but again empty mailboxes. Selecting the individual mailboxes give the same result.
"Second, when importing as Other, Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mbox files to be imported. Hence, when choosing that option, you may want to try importing the *.mbox folders one at a time, rather than the entire ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes folder at once."
I was pretty certain I tried that, but I just went back and checked again to make certain. As above, I get a brief progress bar - then an empty, meaningless, nihilistic folder. Insert pseudo-intellectual 'staring into the abyss' line here.
I do have another thing I'm planning on trying. I was told I might be able to get better results if I booted the eMac into 'Firewire' mode so the Mini would just see it as a hard drive. I'll let you know if I get any results from that.
Thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully, this info will provide enough clues for you to facepalm and say "Of course! The obvious answer is..." And then fill in the ellipse, of course.
Those will work, or they won't. Either way, though, I appreciate your taking the time to think about this.

  • Transferring iMac to Powerbook

Santa was good to me and put a brand new Powerbook G4 under my tree. Yay!
I've been having trouble with transferring my old Mac to my new one. Boo!
The old Mac is an indigo iMac DV running OS 10.2.8 with 2 hard drive partitions, and I haven't had any problems besides an occasional app freeze.
Booted up the Powerbook, followed the instructions on Migration Assistant. The PB got as far as "waiting for disks to appear" and stayed there for about 15 mins before I got the Beachball of Doom. HD 1 showed up in the finder, but HD 2 never appeared. Re-tried entire process several times without success.
Is there something wrong with the old iMac?
I know I could just start up the iMac as a FireWire drive and complete the transfer that way, but I'd rather let the Migration Assistant help me out.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If, has been suggested, the firmware on your iMac is up to date (which it must be already, or you wouldn't have been able to install any version of OS X on to it...), then you should be able to use Migration Assistant.
If Migration Assistant and your machine aren't able to get along, you can also use MA with a working bootable clone installed on an external FW hard drive.
The most comprehensive paper I've seen on Migration Asistant was written by F.J. who is a frequent contributor to Apple Discussions. It is available to read here:
