Transferring info from dying ibook to new macbook

as we speak i am waiting for my new macbook to be delivered.  it is to replace an ibook that has served me well but is on its last legs.  i have been constantly been backing up in time machine on an external hard drive........now how do i get all of my music, movies docs etc. onto the new macbook?
i also have an ipad and ipods(touch) to be synched with the new laptop.  what do i do? thanks

When you get your new macbook, it will ask you if you want to suck your account, data, etc. across from your iBook using something called Migration Assistant. Connect your two computers together by firewire, ethernet or airport, and let it do all the work!

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Same admin user from old iBook to new MacBook Leopard?

I have an old iBook 10.4.11 and .Mac (MobileMe). I am going to buy a new MacBook. I won't be using the iBook anymore. I am admin user - minimal usage - I have a .Mac website, email, DSL (no networking), no synching to another computer.
Can I create the admin user on the new MacBook with the same name, shortname, and password as the old iBook? One reason I want to do this is that it appears to be simpler as far as accessing the iDisk and transferring the .Mac (MobileMe) account to the new computer. Also it's the login I'm used to. There seems to be no reason to change it that I know of.

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply! I don't plan to use Migration Assistant at all. I am hoping to set up the admin user, .Mac connection, and then pull mail settings and Safari bookmarks using this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713
A few relevant files/folders have been copied to my iDisk>Documents using these instructions, like Mail and Safari bookmarks. I also have the iDisk>Sites (custom html .Mac webpages) folder. I have a few actual album CDs that I will insert and import into iTunes. I like the idea of a clean start with the MacBook and intel Leopard.

  • Moving content from old ibook to new macbook

I am going to trade in my ibook for a smart new macbook but am interested in how to move all my stuff from one mac to another ( Itunes etc ). Is there an easy way to do this ? I run the back up utility to a remote hard drive and wondered if I can simply back everything up and then "restore" to my new macbook ?
Any advice would be welcomed, thanks.

    Richard,
I would be careful using the Migration Assistant. It works wonderfully, but even Apple has acknowledged migrating from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac may cause some software not to transfer completely/successfully.
If you do data only, you're golden, just beware of the above if you copy everything.

  • HT4527 "transferring purchases" from iPhone 5 to new MacBook Pro

A week ago I busted the screen on my former Toshiba PC laptop.  I freaked out as it's only 4 months until our wedding day and all our wedding stuff was on that computer, including all our ceremony music.  I purchased my new MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display and received it yesterday.  I followed all the instructions to transfer purchases from my iPhone 5 to my new mac computer but only 9 songs transferred.  The original iTunes was on my Toshiba since 2009 when I had my original iPhone 3GS and after getting the new iPhone 5, all my songs carried over onto that phone.  Now I can't seem to get those songs onto my laptop.  There are over 1,000 songs but I'm most concerned with the ceremony playlists.  Does anyone know why only 9 songs transferred over? What can i do to get the music off my iPhone and onto my MacBook Pro without having to purchase all those songs again??  I authorized this new computer & I signed in using my Apple ID that I had previously on my former laptop....
    HELP!!!
    Thanks!

A busted screen does not do anything to the hard drive.
Pull it out and put it into an external hard drive case.
Then copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder on the old conmputer HD to /Music/ on your new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you will need to do.

  • Transferring data from crashed pc to new MacBook Pro Retina

I am trying to transfer data from back-up discs from my old pc to my new MacBook Pro.  I have a USB superdrive and have inserted the first backup disc but the Macbook does not seem to be responding.  I am trying Migration Assistant but it is stuck on the 'Looking for source' screen.  Does Migration Assistant work for a pc backup disc?  If not, how should I go about transferring the data without having to do it file by file?  I also have the pc backed up on Carbonite but they will only transfer the data to a new pc and not to a mac.  Help!

    Hi nickih64,
When using the Migration Assistant to move data over, there has to be a computer that has be working as Windows version of Migration Assistant needs to be installed and running to make the connection. You would need to have that working or from your back up disks, drag and drop over the information that you want on your MacBook Pro.

  • Transferring music from hard drive to new macbook

So here is my situation I can't seem to figure out.
On my old imac, I kept all  of my music on an external hard drive.
Now that I have a new macbook pro, I would like to transfer the libary on to the itunes, while keeping it on the external hard drive.
When I go to do that, it won't reference the folder I have all my albums in because it says it is not a valid itunes library file.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

So your media are on the external drive and your library files are on the internal?  iTunes is a bunch of files, not just your media files.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management
What are all those iTunes files? - http://www.macworld.com/article/139974/2009/04/itunes_files.html
iTunes 9 [and later]: Understanding iTunes Media Organization - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3847
If your library files are on your internal drive you need to copy the iTunes folder from Home > Music to the same location on the new computer (make sure you don't mind replacing the one already there), then start iTunes.  It may want to update your main library file.
If instead of what you say, the whole iTunes library is on the external drive:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Sync calendar info from phone to my new MacBook Pro.

I am trying to sync info from my iphone to my new Mac computer. Each time I sync it wipes all calendar dates off my phone and replaces with calendar info from computer. I have chosen merge each time it does not help. My original computer was a Dell and i used outlook orignally.

Contact their tech support department since it's their product, not Apple's.  Did you read the user manual?  You make no mention of doing so.

  • Transferring from old ibook to new macbook pro

i have linked my computers with firewire and have been able to transfer itunes, address book, mail, etc. but no luck in getting my 'birthdays' or files from ical. although the laptops are linked, i cannot see anything on the ibook as the screen is broken. any ideas in transferring this important information? thanks to anyone reading and to those who can help.

Look for the folder /Users/username/Library/Calendars/ on the iBook's hard disk, and copy over everything in this folder to the Calendars folder in your account's home folder that doesn't currently exist in the destination. Replace username with the short name of that account, or the full path to the home folder if that has been changed.

  • Transfer info from hp laptop to new macbook pro

    hello
I just recently brought a macbook pro for school. as the title states i am going from pc (windows XP) to mac (snow leopard), finally. I have an external harddrive but have a few questions on syncing my iPhone 3G and iPod classic over.
-Should i copy my music over first?
-How do i sync my iPhone without losing contacts/ music? (i have moble me, but i am still concerned with losing info)
-How do i sync my iPod with out losing playlists?
    thank you
    bb

All iTunes content should be in your iTunes named folder on your PC, which I believe is located in your Music or My Music folder located in your Documents or My Documents folder.
If you haven't already done so, you need to authorize your MBP with your iTunes account with iTunes.
With iTunes quit on your MBP, transfer the iTunes folder from your PC to your Music folder on your MBP. This should not require your iPhone being erased first of all iTunes content when selecting sync music, video, podcasts, and 3rd party apps under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences, but all 3rd party apps downloaded with your iPhone need to be in your iTunes library on your PC or they will be erased from your iPhone the first time you sync 3rd party apps with iTunes on your MBP.
There is an option for syncing direct with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences. Since you have a MobileMe account, you don't need to select this.
When you create your MobileMe account with the Mail.app on your MBP, this should create your MobileMe account at System Preferences > MobileMe.
Under the Sync tab for your MobileMe account preferences at System Preferences > MobileMe is where you select sync with MobileMe automatically or manually and below is where you select bookmarks with Safari, contacts with the Address Book, and calendar events with iCal.

  • Transferring info from older iMac to new one.

Is there a way to transfer my files from my older iMac to My new one? I mean, can I use the firewire port or something easy like that to transfer my files? Or will I have to start form scratch. BTW did I mention my cd/dvd drive on my older mac is dead? There will be no backing up files.
    Please help!

Just be careful with Migration Assistant. If you select Applications, it will move everything over that isn't newer or already on the new Mac. You can't pick and choose. This means it will move any ancient or incompatible apps, including all their associated files, which may end up being spread out all over the new computer.
In addition, if you are moving things out from a PPC to an Intel, read this.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713
Sometimes it's safer to just move files and folders over.

You'll need to erase the drive by booting up holding command-option-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
Use Disk Utility to erase the disk and then Internet Recovery. That will take a while.
