Transferring info from G4 to mini

I have a G4 and have both system 9.2.1 and 10.3.9 loaded. My hard drive has been making funny noises so I bought a mini to transfer everything over because this was about the same price as getting my current hard drive fixed. I also liked the idea of just transferring everything to the mini easily. Right. I am not able to restart into firewire mode to do this. But after posting this problem on the mini discussion board I have figured out that I have a PCI Graphics model which doesn't allow me to reboot into Target Disk Mode. so someone suggested putting the mini in target mode and mounting it onto the G4 and then transferring data. Has anyone done this? Is it as easy as "they" say of am I opening yet another can of worms?

My G4 is making on again off again loud fan sounds that I had repaired about a year ago. I spoke with the tech and he suggested getting a mini which would be faster and better for a little more money that repairing the G4. I thought this would be an easy process but is turning into a big deal-should have known anything with the computer would be a time consuming switch. So mounting the G4 on the mini is not a good idea?

  • Transferring info from old Mac?

How do I get to the Setup Assistant?  I declined transferring info from my old Mac when I first set up my new MacBookAir because I didn't have access to my previous computer at the time.  Now I need to do it and can't find the Setup Assistant screen that asks if I already own a Mac.   Help!

Use the Migration Assistant in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Note that it will create a new Mac OS X user account.

You'll need to erase the drive by booting up holding command-option-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
Use Disk Utility to erase the disk and then Internet Recovery. That will take a while.

  • Transferring info from my N97mini to my N9

I've recently purchased an N9, which uses a micro-sim. My old phone is the N97mini, which does not. I figure the easiest way to transfer all the info, contacts, messages, calendar notes & etc is to transfer it all to my PC then onto the N9...can anyone tell me (totally non-IT-intelligent) how I can do this with the N97??  (By the way, just FYI...LOVE the N9...its a thing of beauty, ease and efficiency!)

  • Can not sync new songs, when I transferred info from computers took identity of old computer and now I have 2 identities on 1 computer

I can not sync new songs on new computer.  When I transferred info from the old computer to the new one it also took the identity from the old computer
so it says I can not do anything because I currently have 2 identities.

If you have successfully transferred your iTunes library from your old computer to your new one, then go ahead and restore the Nano to factory settings in iTunes on your new PC.  This process will deassociate the iPod with the computer and allow it to start syncing with the new one.

  • Transfering info from another computer at startup.

I have a problem. At the initial startup Tiger asked me whether I wanted to transfer information from an older Mac to my new Mac. I opted for no, and went ahead and created a new administrator. Now I realize I should have transfered my info from the older machine after all. Is it possible to go back, to that start up page and transfer all my info and settings from my old machine. I realize this means deleting the administrator I just created but I'm not even sure how to do that. Can someone please help. Thanks,
    Dana

You can run Migration Assistant. Utilities>Migration Assistant. However, if you are going from a PPC to an Intel you are going to migrate files that are not compatible with your new Mac. Therefore, follow the instructions in the link in my first post and you will be better off.

  • Transferring songs from an iPod Mini

I have an iPod mini and used to have a PC. I recently bought a MacBook, and now have iTunes 8 on my MacBook. How do I transfer to the songs from my iPod mini and transfer them to my MacBook into iTunes?

What about iTunes purchases that you buy on your computer, I can not transfer any of those songs onto my daughters iPod that she gave me since she got an iPhone for Christmas and no longer uses her iPod. We reset it and erased all the data and now it will only transfer one song. Sorry for getting in on this thread, no one responded to mine when I asked the question.

  • Transferring Library from Old iPOD mini to new computer...

My computer was fried about a month ago. My company's IT department replaced it, but I lost my library of iTUNES entirely from the hard disk. The whole library is of course on my old iPOD mini. I want to transfer the library from the old iPOD mini to my new computer and then, in turn, to my new NANO - which I am very excited about. I have installed the nano and the iTUNEs on my new computer. I am fearful that if I plug my old iPOD mini into the new computer, with the blank library, that it will erase the iPOD mini library. HELP!

DO NOT attach & sync your full iPod to an empty iTunes!!!
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple Method: (just to recover the song files)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
    5 – Within iTunes: File=>Add Folder
6 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    7 - Click OK
8 - The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes
8a –- this will take some time depending on your PC and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Transferring info from old address book to new Mac

    my subtopic ought to be 'writing a subject heading that relates to the question I want to ask'. That question was;
    Can anyone help me?
My last iMac died and I've got a new one. I've also got the hard drive from the old iMac, but when I try to open things from it, such as the address book, the new version opens and I can't find a way to get at the info that is in my old address book. I want to e-mail friends to tell them that I'm back on-line, but I can't get at their addresses. Advice received with thanks.

The Address Book data is stored at the following location - Home > Library > Application Support > AddressBook.
With the Address Book application quit on your new iMac, transfer the AddressBook folder from the old hard drive and place it in the same location on your new hard drive at Home > Library > Application Support.
This will replace the existing AddressBook folder in this location.
Launch Address Book and all contacts from the old drive should be completely restored.

  • Transferring songs from my iPod mini to my PS3

How do I get all the song titles and info for the songs on my iPod mini to come up on my PS3? Can I download iTunes on my PS3? When I connected my iPod to the PS3 some song titles came up but the majority of them did not. A lot of other songs said unsupported data and I think those are the songs that I downloaded off iTunes. Thanks for help.

  • Transfering files from old mac mini to new mac mini

I just purchased a new mac mini intel duo OSX 10.4.10, with which I am using my existing monitor, keyboard and mouse. I want to transfer important files and software from my old original mac mini without having to purchase a whole new set of peripherals, which seems to be indicated when the set up assistant directs connecting the CPU's with firewire cable. Please advise. Thanks.

No need for a second set of peripherals. Plug the firewire cable into both computers and the keyboard into the old Mac and start it up in FireWire target mode (hold the T key while turning it on). Now unplug the keyboard and connect it to the new one. Start up the Migration Assistant and go.
