Transferring Info From Time Machine Stopped?
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro. Disk Utility said there was an error with my hard drive and I would have to reformat it. So I erased the hard drive, reinstalled Yosemite, and began to retrieve my Time Machine back-up. On the "Transferring Your Information" screen, the activity has stopped at "about 11 minutes remaining" (keyword: about!) for the past few hours. My external hard drive power indicator is no longer on; I assume it is asleep, but when I touch the casing I know it is still powered on. If it matters, it is a Seagate 2 TB external hard drive.
What should I do? Wait overnight and see if something magical will happen? Do I power off and start all over again? Should I piece meal my documents and data instead of using Time Machine?
Thanks!

Transfering data from Time Machine to Mac Book Pro
Trying to transfer data from Time Machine to new Mac Book Pro. Migration Assistant closes down Time Machine and so it doesn't show up on my icons. How to work around?
Those folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Follow the instructions on this page to associate your existing backups with the new installation.
You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one. -
Transferring data from Time Machine external hard drive to band new mac
My husband bought me a brand new Mac but then powered it up to play with it and bypassed the magic transfer option at the very beginning which would have allowed me to transfer my backed up info from my old mac to this new one.
Is there a process that I need to go through now to make sure this information transfers correctly or do I just plug in my external hard drive and let it do its thing.
My worry is that I do something wrong and Time Machine doesn't know that I need to transfer to a new mac, it sincs with the new mac and the old data gets somehow erased.
Paranoid? Oh yes!
Thanks for any help....Time Machine transfers of backed up info to any Mac are not automatic, nor does any backed up info get erased from the Time Machine backup when you do a transfer. You have two options for copying Time Machine backup files to the new Mac:
1. Use Migration Assistant (found in Applications/Utilities) to migrate (copy) items to the new Mac. Select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" as the migration method, then select the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, then select the items you want to transfer. You can select some or all of the user accounts on the old Mac, Applications (all or none), Settings files (Time Zone, Machine, and/or Network), & "Other" files & folders (which are any other root level files & folders not included in the above).
If you have already set up your network, time zone, etc. settings while playing with the new Mac then there is no particular need to migrate the old ones. If you migrate Applications, Migration Assistant will not replace newer versions with older ones, but it may transfer some old apps that don't work with Snow Leopard. This won't do any harm, but you may want to delete the incompatible apps as you discover them to save space on the new hard drive.
If you have created a new user account on the new Mac with the same name as some account on the old Mac, you will have to either give the old account a new name for the transfer or replace the new account with the old one, which will erase any user files you have created in the new account. Thus, you should save any such files to a backup if you want to keep them.
2. Use Time Machine itself to restore selected files or folders from the Time Machine backup of the old Mac to the new one. Open Time Machine from the Dock, choosing "Browse Other Time Machine Disks…" from the popup options. Again, choose the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, & then select whatever dated backup you want to restore items from.
All this is harder to explain than to do in actual practice -- for the first method you get on-screen guidance for each step & for the second the interface is pretty intuitive. -
Problems "transferring" files from time machine to new hard drive
I was experieincing the spinning beach ball of death so I replaced my hard drive with a new one. I am running mountain lion (10.8.2) and the new Hard drive has two partions - one for "start up" which I was able to use migration assisant to move over my applications from my time machine. The problem I am having is that I can't figure out how to get my user account data transferred to my the data partition (journal extended) on my new hard drive.
When I enter time machine I can't "see" my last back updates before I changed hard drives.
I put my old hard drive in a case and it "isn't working" so I can't just copy data from my old hard drive. It did work initially but now it doesn't mount and I can't see it in disk utility.
Any Ideas on how I can get my user data off my time machine back up?
I forgot to mention that when I go into my external hard drive containing my time machine via finder and click on the folder with my user data I'm not able to open the various files - they have a red "-" and it says, The folder “Desktop” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents. In disk utility I can't run repair disk permision on my time machine drive because it is grayed out.
Thanks - DaveI see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done. -
Old Macbook Died! How do I get my info from Time Machine to New Mac?
I spilled my coffee on my macbook! So sad. I used my time machine to backup my deceased macbook, but want to get that information onto my new macbook? I know this is possible, but I have no idea how to do it? Please help. I am lost without my emails and documents? Please help

Is it possible to move the data from the time capsule to my wifes Imac, until I purchase my new computer? Can the time capsule share data between two machines, or only onto a new machine?
If there's room, sure. You can "migrate" your user account to her Mac.
On her Mac, using an existing account on it, start up the +Migration Assistant+ app, in her Applications/Utilities folder. Select +From a Time Machine backup or other disk+ and click Continue.
You'll then see a list of everything the Mac can find that might be a source; your Mac's backups should be listed. Select them and Continue.
On the next page, select the user(s) you want. You can select or omit the top-level folders for each user, but not pick and choose inside them.
You probably don't want to select apps or settings. If you need some apps, that's a bit tricky; post back with details.
My wifes Imac already has a backup through the time machine.
You'll need to decide what you want Time Machine to do with your account on her Mac. If there's room on your TC, let TM back up normally; the first one will do a full backup of everything you just moved. Subsequent backups will, of course, be incremental.
When you get your Mac back, you'll have to be careful what, how, and from where you restore, but we can dig into that later. -
Time Machine stopped backing up but doesn't give warning/error
Hi,
by chance I noticed, that Time Machine doesn't backup up any more, but still doesn't give errors. In Console I see the following for a now typical run:
21.04.15 09:58:11,493 com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
21.04.15 09:58:12,043 com.apple.backupd: Backing up to: /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb
21.04.15 09:58:41,729 com.apple.backupd: 5.18 GB required (including padding), 96.84 GB available
21.04.15 09:58:55,149 com.apple.backupd: Copied 23 files (93 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
21.04.15 09:59:04,385 com.apple.backupd: Copied 36 files (93 bytes) from volume DATA.
21.04.15 09:59:06,100 mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
21.04.15 09:59:06,102 com.apple.backupd: Starting post-backup thinning
21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Deleted /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb/drosera/2015-04-20-183344 (24.0 KB)
21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
21.04.15 09:59:07,762 com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.
The 5.18 GB are never backed up. The backup drive (drosera-backup-02) is attached by FireWire. I have checked the disk with First Aid, I have disconnected and reconnected it. I removed the backup disk from Time Machine, stopped TM and reconfigured. I stopped mds, ran backups and reenabled mds. All to no avail.
I am at a complete loss and I'd appreciate to get this running w/o having to remove all existing backups. Any ideas or pointers?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Mac mini
Cheers
FrankThx. I had already tried the hints from mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume to no avail. Your tip to rebuild the Spotlight index would probably helped, too. But just before getting yout comment and after reading http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69054/force-time-machine-to-perform-a-d eep-traversal I had simply removed /.fseventsd and reran a backup. That seems to have fixed the problem (at least for the time being).
Interesting side note: During the non-backup phase I created a new account on the Mac and ran TM. This triggered a one-time working backup of the whole system, but all subsequent backups again failed silently. Additionally the externally attached FireWire harddrive was always backed up correctly, only backups of the local drive failed. -
Restoring iCal from Time Machine/Older HD
SO here's the deal. I upgraded my harddrive in my MBP over the weekend. Doubled it size to 500GB joy! What I decided to do once I got a blank copy of Lion on it was to restore just the user info, system settings and "other files" from the Time Machine back up I have (not from the old hard drive). Allowing me to install only the Applications I would really need after all my user info was on the computer and clearing up some more space.
This worked GREAT!
When I opened my iCal I had duplicate calendars. So, I deleted some of the duplicates. Apparently I deleted the wrong ones, and now ALL my calendars are gone. And before you ask, no, I didn't setup my TimeMachine (I decided to test things out before erasing that backup and start fresh with my new system)
BUT, I still have the old Time Machine backup AND I still have my old/smaller HD hooked up via USB.
My question is, where can I grab the iCal info from (Time Machine or my old HD) or do I need to start the process all over again just to get my calendars back?
Thanks in advanceNew development... I was going to recreate my calendars while I waited and I found that I couldn't name a new calendar the same as one of my deleted calendar... (ie: I couldn't recreate a calendar called "Home") so, by going into preferences and digging around a little I found something strange? Under my default calendars it shows my current list of calendars, but my reminders shows all my OLD (deleted) calendars?? (see images)

Safari fails to open after recent hard drive replacement and data transfer from time machine
The hard drive was replaced by apple under replacement scheme due to seagate failures. It was reloaded with latest ios, but safari would not open, reported failure.
I had re -installed my backed up info from time machine. i did go into back ups and copied previous safari app, and dropped it on my desk top. It opened ok. Is there an easy way to get this app onto the system and delete the faulty safari file.
Hope this makes sense.guess what, all fixed, the safari app installed by apple on new hard drive was 5 something, but 6.02 was needed, i installed 6.02 but it told me i needed OSX10.8.2 which cost me £13.99 but it now works.
happy days -
My Safari "quits unexpectedly" each time I try to start it on my new MacBook Air after I transferred it from my MacBook via migration from time machine backup disk.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is. -
My Daughter is currently upgrading her MacBook Pro to OS X Lion. During the upgrade the system rebooted and then stops at the OS X Utilites menu. I have installed this same upgrade on My MacBook Pro and the family iMAC without issue. Did the upgrade encounter a problem? The only options are to Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall Mac OS X, Get help, or Disk Utility.
I'm not sure how recient the backup is on the TimeMachine for her system and she is concered that she may loose a lot of updates she has made to iTunes and iPhoto.
Please help.I have 8 GB of RAM, but would that even matter during install? Performance once installed and running sure, but I questiong whether the installer would demand that much more, or why it would affect mountain lion when restoring from a time machine backup.

I had to restore my iMac from Time Machine. After the restoration all programs are functioning except my Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. When I start any program in the suite the error message, "Licensing for this product has stopped working." I restarted the computer and tried again to run Photoshop and the same error message appeared. The message was followed by a message that stated that I needed to contact Adobe technical support and mention Error: 150.30. I need Adobe technical support to provide me a solution for my problem so I can continue using my Adobe products installed on my computer.
Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite. You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

Transferring from time machine onto my mac after its had a new hard drive installed.
I have a new hard drive in my iMac, using Mavericks 10.9.5.
I would like to restore from Time Machine, all my info.
The Apple video "Time Machine Basics" talks about "migrating to a new mac" and this is straightforward, but I already have logged into my new mac! I don't have the option to migrate.
How do I go back into Time Capsule for the first time?
If I just open Time Machine and start backing up my "empty new hard drive" onto the Time Capsule which contains the saved info from before, will I then be able to then just go back to the previous saved dates? Does that make sense?Thank you, that makes sense, however, I've only just realised that I'm logged onto the new Hard Drive as "Test".
When I plugged it in, and turned it on, it just opened up like that, without me needing to log in as 'me' yet?
Is this ok, and the best option to do as you suggest? -
Transferred from time machine backup to new Mac desktop and screen went white on me. Did I do something wrong.???
How did you transfer the data?

Time machine stop working suddenly
not sure if it's related 10.5.6 upgrade but recently, I realize that the Time Machine stops working. I'm using a USB hard disc the backup drive. It's been working perfectly for a few months. But in the past 1 or 2 weeks, it doesn't back up anything at all. It always show "Preparing Backup..."... and that's it
I don't even know how to trouble-shoot! any help?Did you find this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516
Assuming you did, how much of your HD is used, and how long did the initial TM backup take?
Since the initial backup succeeded, have you disconnected and reconnected your drive, or powered-down, or anything?
And how long has it said "preparing"?
Also, it's possible you might find something in the system log.
Use the Console app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Click on Show Log List at the upper left, then navigate in the sidebar to your system.log (current) or system.log.0.bz2, etc (previous).
Most of what's in there is just info, and not intelligible to us mere mortals.
You're looking for messages from backupd, and/or backupd.helper. Copy anything suspicions and post them here. Maybe somebody can decipher them.

Getting stats on a selection of songs
Is there a way to get information (total playing time, memory used) on a selection of songs? Alternately, can I get the same information on only the checkmarked songs in the library or any given playlist? Thanks.
