Transferring iphoto from very old macbook to new macbook pro

I am desperate to find someone who can help me out with this!
I have an old macbook (from about 2007) and I have now purchased a new macbook pro. I'm trying to transfer my iphoto library from the old computer (which is a large file!! about 60GB) to the new one.
Having looked around on apple support and having been into an apple shop - it appeared quite easily - all I needed to do was to connect my two laptops with a cable (which I have purchased and can manage this far) and then simply open up the old macbook hard drive and copy the iphoto library from the old computer into the new computers "pictures"....
However, I've tried this and it starts to do it at first saying that it will take several hours which I have no problem with, however after a few minutes it just says that it can't go ahead with the copy because some of the files from the old Iphoto aren't viable or something like that - can't remember the exact wording...
Is there any other way of getting iphoto on to my new computer? Or any ideas?
THanks!!!

It means that there is content in the old library that is either corrupted (most likely) or has illegal characters in the filenames. See I-O error -36 « fuzzybrain|daisychain|blogdrain.
Given your info that the library is quite old (not to mention extremely large) this may be the result of past usage. Possible things you might try:
Apple iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.0 to update the library.
You should do this Google search - "repair iphoto library" to find a large number of links to software that may be able to rebuild the old library and/or fix problems.
Otherwise, create a new folder on your new computer's Desktop. Open your old iPhoto Library on your old computer (I assume that works) then start manually dragging small selections of photos from the library over to the new folder. Eventually you will end up with a long list of individual photos to import into the new iPhoto.
Wish I have more to offer.

I want to transfer my iPhoto from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have a firewire or I could also do it from my TimeCapsule. Would one be a better method than the other?

    Hi brotherbrown,
A direct FireWire transfer (especially if it's 800 to 800) is going to be the fastest method. TimeCapsule would work, if you connect to it via Ethernet, via wireless it would be quite slow (especially if you have a large library).

  • Trapped at transferring data from my old macbook pro to iMac

I got a new iMac yesterday and was trying to transfer data from my old macbook pro to iMac through time machine...
    However, I encountered HUGE problems....
Background info: I set up a new account before I transffered my data.
    Here is what I did:
I used migration assistance to transfer data. I chose to transfer everything listed on migration assistance from time machine to my new iMac.
After this process was completed, I switched to the transferred account from my newly-set account. Then I realized all the old stuf, (including the software problems + old apps such as microsoft 2008, had been transferred to my new iMac. what I really wanted were all the documents, pictures and music! Therefore I decided to delete this account....
    Question 1:
    1) I deleted the transferred account, then there was a windown came up asking me if i wanted to keep the home folder, I chose no. then mac started cleaning up and BACKING UP. Since I already had a copy of everything, I stopped the backup process....then this transferred account was deleted. However, everything was still on my mac that I don't have access to (at least I don't know how...) when I checked my mac stroage!
Could anyone tell me how to delete all the files I transferred from time machine to my new iMac?
    Question 2:
    2) how can i only transfer documents+pictures+music from my old macbook pro to new iMac through time machine without creating a new account? I want all the files to be directly transferred to my newly-set account...
    LSS:
    Question 1
I tried to transfer everthing from my old macbook pro to new iMac but i realized there were something I didn't want that had been transferred as well. Therefore I deleted this transferred account. However, all the files are still in my mac even if I have deleted that account. Could anyone tell me how I can access to those content and delete them?
    Question 2
I just want the documents, music and pictures (from iPhone library) to be directly transferred to the newly-set account on my iMac through time machine (instead to transferred the whole old account to my imac) How can I do it??
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE OF GOING THROUGH THIS MESSAGE. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU COULD GIVE ME A HAND.
btw, you can totally see that i'm not a computer person at all....:( thanks for your help!!

I suggest starting over. Boot into Recovery mode, wipe the HD, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, use the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to do the migration.'

  • HT4889 Transferring files from my old Macbook Pro to the new one takes over 30 hours?!?!

How is that even possible? I am trensferring the files using a tunderbolt cable and the wifi on the source computer is switched off to avoid trying to transfer the files over wifi. At first I thought the estimation was inaccurate and hope that when I leave it overnight it will be done by the morning but it wasn't, nor the morning after. I can see there is progress but it is so tremendously slow, it absolutely strains my nerves goven the fact that I have porpietary software on my ild computer that I really nee dto use now, and I am afraid what will happen if I disconnect.
It's been saying "less than a minute left" for almost an hour now but nothing is happening. Can/should I try to restart?

Ah, I see, you are right. My old MacBook is from mid 2010, so it simply has a mini display port, I just assumed it is the same thing since the cable fit and the computers recognized each other.
I wish I knew that before I started, as there wasn't really anything I could do at this point but wait for two days only to get stuck on the last minute. The only "guiding" message was on my new computer advising me to connect via ethernet cable. Ironically it showed the message on my new MacBook Pro, which doesn't even have an ethernet port...

  • Just got a new macbook pro and transferred files from my old macbook. Everything is fine except my iphoto will not show photos.

I just got a new macbook pro and transferred everything from my old macbook. My photos show up as thumbnails in iphoto, but if I click on them, a "?" pops up for all of them!

    Copy the Library over manually.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How can I migrate iPhoto library from an old MacBook Pro to a new one?

When the hard drive on my MacBook Pro 13 needed to be wiped clean, I restored all my files from Time Machine except for my iPhoto files. Not sure why my iPhoto library wasn't restored, but it wasn't, and I can't find it on my Time Capsule. I want to move my partial iPhoto library from my old MacBook Pro to my new one. I understand this is possible by linking them in some way. What is that way?

There are three ways; using File Sharing over a network, transferring them via an external drive, or using FireWire Target Disk mode. If you use file sharing, use the AFP protocol. If you use an external drive, it or a partition or disk image on it needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • I need help transferring Bootcamp (Windows XP) from my old Macbook Pro to the new one. How do I make bootable clone of Bootcamp?

Hi I just got a new MacBook Pro I need help transferring Bootcamp (Windows XP) from my old Macbook Pro to my new Macbook Pro  Mac OS X 10.7.4  2.6 Ghz Intel Core 17. How do I make bootable clone of Bootcamp?

you can't just move XP even if you took the hard drive and have Windows boot and function.
Apparently there are Windows tools to sanitize the OS and strip all the motherboard drivers and services.
Time to get a supported OS. Don't want to pay, then use 8 for the time until it goes on sale.
There are no drivers for even Vista on 2011 and later Macs.

  • Just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. transferred data from my old macbook over n it created another user name. that's actually good--xcept for music, which i want on my new acct. How do i move files from my "old comp" acct to my new one?

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? I've googled extensively but can only find instructions for OSX 10.6 and previous, which talks about the "Shared folder," which I can't seem to find.

That's actually bad. Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and seriously consider starting over.

Either exercise a lot of patience or start over again.  See if there is useful information here that can solve your problem.

  • How do I transfer files from my old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro?

I am trying to transfer some files, not all, from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, but it doesn't let me choose what I want to transfer (only generic things like "users" and "files and folders"). I have tried to use Firewire. Now here is the funny thing. When I put my old mac in target mode it doesn't appear on my new mac anywhere. But, when I put my new mac in target mode, it pops right up on the dashboard and in finder. The problem is I have tried using my new mac as the target and just place the files into the icon, but the don't stay after I eject. I get a prompt that says downloading and when all files and apps are transferred I turn off my new mac then turn it back on and nothing. I've done search after search and repeated this process 3 times and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Time Machine will not "overwrite". New back ups are added to what is there, without erasing.
Connect the Time Machine back up, double click on the icon and navigate through its contents - the back ups are chronological, so you just select the date then go through the contents just like on any other drive. You can select any files you want and drag and drop on the new Mac's desktop (or anywhere else).

  • If I buy a new MacBook Air will the Apple Store help me transfer everything from my old MacBook Pro?

Will Apple help to copy over all the settings, apps, programs, files, etc. from an old MacBook Pro 15" on OS X 10.6.8 to a new MacBook Air 15"?  Will it work easily and painlessly?  Will they help me set it back to factory once everything is copied so that it can be sold or given to someone else?  Will they charge for this?
I want to get the new MacBook Air 13".
The current 15" 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro Mid 2009 has the following specs and OS:
    Mac OS X version 10.6.8
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.49f2
    Serial Number (system):
    Hardware UUID:
    Sudden Motion Sensor: Enabled
According to Apple's serial number identifier it's this: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP544
    Thanks.

    You sure about this? https://www.apple.com/why-mac/better-support/
"Purchase a One to One membership at the same time you get your new Mac from an Apple Retail Store, and you won’t have to spend hours transferring all your stuff. Just bring in your old PC, and we’ll do it for you. A Specialist will move all your files — email, contacts, music, photos, documents, calendar, desktop items — and make sure everything is exactly where it should be. One to One costs just $99, and it includes a year’s worth of one-hour, face-to-face training sessions. It’s like getting a head start before you start."
This is really disappointing.  Buy a $3,000 computer from them and then buy another one for $1,000+ and all they want to do is screw you over, nickle and dime you and price gouge you on setting it up.

How can I transfer my email accounts and emails from my old macbook pro with ML to my new macbook pro with ML

Do you have your system backed up to Time Machine? If so, you can open your user Library and copy your Mail folder from Time Machine to your Desktop on your new machine; then copy THAT folder to your new machine's user Library.
To get to your user Library, open Finder and Go and press the Option key. Library will show up. Click on it to get into your user Library. Now go into Time Machine and you should see your user Library for Time Machine. Restore the Mail folder to your Desktop.

  • How to migrate from my old MacBook Pro to a new one with less disk space and an external hard drive?

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and an external hard drive.
Yet I have problems migrating data from my old MacBook Pro (more internal disk space with around 500 GB data) to my new one (internal disk space less than 500 GB).
I have connected all 3 devices but it seems the Migration Assistant does not have an option for us to select to migrate to an external hard drive.
Any other way to do it?
    Kindly help me.  Thanks.

For your situation, Target disk mode may be the most efficient method:
