Transferring iphoto's from my old imac to my new Christmas imac

How do I transfer all the photos? The 'library' does not want to be dragged anywhere

drag the iPhoto library from the old system to the pictures folder of the new one and launch iPhoto on the new one
By default the iPhoto library is in your pictures folder
And note that you must drag the iPhoto library -- not iPhoto

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

  • How do I transfer iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Air and retain the Albums?

I just transferred my iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Air by dragging the entire Library from my Pictures folder onto an external HD and then dragging from there onto my new Air. Transfer effected fine and all images now appear in iPhoto on the new Air. One problem: the Albums that were present on the left hand toolbar in iPhoto on my old machine are no longer there, so I have 50,000 images with no organization. Events are still there organized by date so that is something, but the Albums are not there and that is what I primarily relied on. Help please??

The left hand pane is the source pane. Were both Macs running the same version of iPHoto?
Try rebuilding the library with the option to Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

i was transferring my information from my old iphone to the new one, and i forgot that i had some pictures in the new one. i did the restoring information and the pictures in new one are gone. how can i get them back???? please

Only way to get it back is to restore your phone from a backup, if those pics were included in that backup.
But most likely those pics are gone.
What you should've done was import http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 the pics to your computer and after you restored from your old backup, you could sync those new pics to your phone via itunes.

  • Hi, I have just recently purchased a new laptop, I am transferring the music from my old library to my new library via USB and they are now sucessfully transferred however how do I get iTunes to automatically file the music in my computers documents?

    Hi kirstynugent,
If you are having issues moving the musing in your iTunes Library from your old computer to your new computer and making sure that it is located correctly, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Migrating large iPhoto library from my old mac to a new iMac

Hi there. This seems a little complicated, but hopefully I can explain my problem clearly and somebody will have faced this same problem.
I currently have a Macbook pro of approximately five years old and it is running an outdated version of iPhoto (6.0.6) and has just over 5,000 pictures in its library which have been edited and updated.I have recently purchased a new iMac (11,3) which is running iPhoto 11 (version 9.1.5) which so far has only about 30 photos in it which were loaded as a “test” import and could be removed if necessary.
What I want to know is how do I best go about transferring my old iPhoto library and its contents (critically, I obviously want to keep the 5,000 shots intact in their edited state) over to the new iMac so that I can view my whole photo library in iPhoto ’11?
I have actually moved the whole iPhoto library folder across to the iMAC hard disk and put it in a separate dummy folder, however, I am usure about exactly how to go about combining them as it would appear that iPhoto ’11 may have a different underlying file structure and I don't want to mess this up!
It had occurred to me that it might be worth upgrading iPhoto on my macbook Pro to iPhoto ’11 (I have recently upgraded to snow leopard so I have access to the App Store)....... Am I right in thinking that this provides a simple down-loadable upgrade all the way to IPhoto’11. Would this help me in any way what I am trying to do, do you think?
Be grateful for all advice on this.
    Thanks,
    Alan.

    It's really simple.
I have actually moved the whole iPhoto library folder across to the iMAC hard disk and put it in a separate dummy folder,
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at this Library. Iphoto will upgrade the library to the new format.

  • Can I just transfer iPhoto pictures from an old mac to a new one without transferring anything else?

I bought a new iMac back in September and finally got around to setting it up.  Unfortunately, I am having loads of trouble transferring stuff from my older iMac to the new one.  It probably has something to do with the reason why we've replaced it...video RAM failure.  I really don't care about settings and applications and most other stuff on the old computer, but I really do want my photo library and if possible, all my saved emails.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  We've tried transferring info from first set-up of the new computer and the old computer would just freeze and have to be shut down half way through the process.  We tried this for HOURS yesterday and just wouldn't work.  Both computers were connected via FireWire, but it didn't help.  I got so fed up with it that I just manually set up the new computer, but it's a blank canvas.  I can get my new e-mail, but don't have my saved emails or my contact list.  We tried transferring again after setting up the new computer but that failed as well...the old one froze half way through.  Can I just transfer bits and pieces without having to transfer the whole user account and settings?

I stated that I did try to do all of this when I first set up the new computer...I did do the Setup Assistant numerous times but my old computer kept freezing half way through.  Even if I did it when I first got the new computer back in Septemeber, I would have had the same issue b/c my old computer has been 'broken' for a while.  My old computer can't handle doing too much at once and I think the setup and then migration functions I tried were too much.  That's why I was hoping I could use the migration function piecemeal.  I wish I could just check off the exact files and folders I want vs. having to choose it at the 'user' level...that's too much for my old computer to have to transfer.

  • I tried transferring my songs from an old computer to a new one.

I transfered the files and downloaded the latest edition of itunes. Here are the problems:
    1. I do not have any playlists, or any other information.  Is there another file I should transfer.
    2. When I put a disc burned on the old computer in the new computer, it says only track 1, 2, etc. In the old computer it showed the song titles
    3.  I ended up with around 5000 duplicates. I deleted them from itunes and said put in the recycle bin (and emptied it).  However, I am still showing thousands of duplicates when I see the files from another media player.  I am affraid to delete the duplicates, because it may be the one that itunes is using. Is there any way to group the files that are in itunes together, so I can delete the rest?
    4. any other tips on what to do to keep my files straight would be appreciated.
Thank you for your help.  Even if you can answer only one, I will appreciate it.
    Bob

    1. You should transfer the entire iTunes folder, in particular the file iTunes Library.itl which is the database that records playlists, ratings, date added and everything else that isn't stored in the tags.
    2. When you burn a CD with iTunes it will probably add the track information into the local CDDB cache. It may well be possible to transfer that data to the new computer but it's not something I've ever tried.
    3. Add all the files into iTunes, then delete the known duplicates from iTunes and from the hard drive. My script DeDuper can take some of the effort & guesswork out of that task.
    4. General tips on getting organised at Grouping tracks into albums.

  • HT4489 how can transfere my contact from the old phone to the new one

If you go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, you will see an option title "iCloud Backup". Turn it on.  Allow the backup to complete on your old device.
When setting up your new device, you will be asked if you want to set up your device as a new device, or restore from a backup. Choose that you want to restore from an iCloud backup, and choose the backup with the name of your old phone. It may take several minutes to several hours (depending on the amount of data backed up and the speed of your internet connection) to restore your data, but it will restore all of your iCloud data, as well as your apps and photos.

  • Transferring my music from an old ipod to a new ipod Video

I have just bought a new ipod video for my son who has an old ipod - how can I register his new ipod when one is already on my profile and how then do i get my music onto my new ipod from my old ipod profile
    many thanks
    paul

The way I do it if all of my items are on my iPod and not in my library is make sure that the old iPod is connected via USB or Firewire. Go into your Windows Explorer and the iPod should be recognized as a drive letter. Click the pulldown menu "Tools", "Folder Options" and then click on the "View" tab. Under "Hidden files and folders", check "Show hidden files and folders." click OK and then click on your iPod folder. You should see a "iPod_Control" folder. Take that folder and copy and paste the entire contents somewhere to your hard drive. Make sure you make a subfolder prior to such as "iPod Backup." Once that is done, in iTunes navigate to File, Add Folder to Library. It will bring all of your music into your iTunes library and begin to re-tag all of the music (you need to be connected to the Internet). From there, you can unplug the old iPod and plug your new iPod in. Drag and drop from your library to your new iPod and Voila!

  • Transferring itunes songs from my old PC to my new Mac?

    Hi all,
Whats the best way to transfer all my music (itunes) tracks from my work PC to my new Mac that i use at home. Is it as simple as just copying my existing music libraries onto a memory stick and then just copying over to the Mac? And you know (or not!) in Windows how in My Documents it has that My Music folder in which to store all your songs? Where do i save them in the Mac?? I guess same can be said for all my photos too.
Also i got a Firewire cable but i just noticed that my PC doesn't have a connection for it (i was going to use this to help transfer over my files to the Mac). So do i need something else?
    Any answers greatly appreciated!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When you open Finder, you should see on the left hand side, things like "Music", "Pictures".
Those are essentially like what you have in My Documents.
If you're using iTunes, whatever you play in there should automatically go to Music>iTunes>iTunes Music. It organizes the iTunes Music folder into more folders by artist names.
What I'd suggest doing is put your music on a memory stick, drag it into the iTunes program, then eject the memory stick. Then you'll find all your music stored and organized in the iTunes Music folder

  • Need to move Mailboxes from an old Powerbook to a new desktop iMac G5.

I already asked on some discussion group but somehow lost it and have to re enter my question.
I have an old Powerbook G4 that I had to use for a few months but now have my new iMac G5 desktop Intel Core and need to copy all the Mail in mailboxes onto a flash drive so I can then have it as an archive backup but also be able to copy it to the new computer.  Thanks for any advice given.

    Your reply is appreciated.
