Transferring iPod library to iTunes/other iPod

Ok, so here's my problem. My hard drive crashed on my iBook and I had to get it replaced. I lost all my data and the majority of what was on the old hard drive was music.
Is there any way to transfer the music on my iPod back into my computer? Or, if I were to get.. say the iPod Touch, would that music on my current iPod transfer to it? Help please!!

You can't transfer directly from one iPod yo another but if you copy the songs back to iTunes you can update a new iPod from there. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
Senuti Mac Only
PodView Mac Only
PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
iRepo Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Uploading Library into New Ipod & Xferring library to itunes on other PC...

    Hi All....
1.) I had(have) an Ipod Classic (30GB) and dropped it. Needless to say, the screen shattered. So, I went to MAC World where I got the entire Ipod replaced for $140. In doing so, my library was wiped out too..So, how do I upload my library from Itunes onto my new Ipod?
2.) How do I transfer my Itunes library from the original PC where I first installed ITunes (years ago) to my new laptop? Why can't I just install/open ITunes on my new laptop and my original library be there? How do I sync it with the new Ipod so that my original library is uploaded onto it from my laptop?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!!
    Regards,
    T.

*How do I upload my library from Itunes onto my new Ipod?*
Connect your new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions to register and name it. It will connect to iTunes and prompt you to automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like. You can leave it at manual update or choose to sync music - selected playlists.
*How do I transfer my Itunes library from the original PC where I first installed ITunes (years ago) to my new laptop?*
Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
Your iPod can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
*Why can't I just install/open ITunes on my new laptop and my original library be there*
Because your library is just a database that links to the songs on your hard drive, you have to have the songs on the hard drive for iTunes to use them.
*How do I sync it with the new Ipod so that my original library is uploaded onto it from my laptop?*

can anyone help with retrieving My Library in Itunes and Itunes store - having updated Itunes and Icloud on 24 September 13, my computer failed and I lost all my files which were eventually backed up to an Emergency Backup.  my computer is now working again and I have down loaded Itunes and transferred all the files from my Emergency Backup.  Non of the music went back into Itunes, so I had to find these files and manually moved them to Itunes.  The music is now in Itunes, but I no longer have the folder named My Library, which I think is the reason my Ipad, ipod no longer sync any additional music I have added to Itunes. Does anyone know how to rectify this please.
    Many thanks.  Crusey

iTunes expects files and folders to be in very specific locations.  When you start iTunes it looks for a file called library.itl which is in the iTunes folder.  It then uses all the references in that file which tell it where all your media files are located to build up the view you normally see.  Probably you moved the library file so iTunes cannot find it and it will make a default one which is empty.  When you plug in your iPod it isn't recognizing the library since it is not the same one to which you synced last.
Simply put, you need to undo all your file moves.  Not as eaily done as stated but since I cannot quite see from here exactly what you spent an hour doing last night it will be up to you.  Did you make a backup before doing all this?

  • IPod touch will no longer sync with my music library on iTunes since restoring to factory settings

I had to restore the ipod when it locked my son out as he'd forgotten the passcode.
I have around 1000 songs in my music library on itunes. Sync all songs is checked, but it saying there are 0 songs.
I'd like to sync all songs to the ipod.  Can anyone help please?

Syncing is iTunes keeping your iTunes library (or a defined portion of the iTunes library) "in sync" (the same as) the library on your iPod.  And iTunes syncing of content generally goes in one direction only, from iTunes library on computer to the iPod.  That's why, if you want to sync it to a NEW iTunes library, iTunes is warning you that the existing library on the iPod will be replaced.
So, you cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, you can add them to your iTunes library.  Once your iTunes library is consolidated with ALL of your songs, you can sync your iPod to it.
NOTE:  If you have songs previously purchased from the iTunes Store on the iPod, you can re-download them at no cost, from the iTunes Store Purchased screen.  The link to Purchased is on the iTunes Store Home screen, under QUICK LINKS.

  • HT1351 Only want to see sync songs/artists/albums on iPod touch (not the whole library in iTunes). How to do it?

I only want to see on iPod touch songs/artists/albums manually selected for sync (not the whole library in iTunes). How to do it? Not sync titles appear in grey colour...

So if I understand you correctly, you want to be able to sync only certain songs, artists, and albums correct? If so you can configure this set up from under the iPod's Music configuration tab in iTunes as described in the Syncing Automatically section in the Apple support document you linked in at the top of the page.  Note that you cannot select only certain songs, but you can set it up to sync selected Artists, Genres, and Albums.
If the tab and its configurations are grayed out, it is likely because your iPod is set up for manual management, meaning the manually manage music and videos option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab.

  • I have added music from my CD library to iTunes but now my iPod will not sync.  Message says not enough free space.  How can I sync only a portion of my library to my 8Gb Nano?

I have added music from my CD library to iTunes on my PC.  I now have too many songs in my iTunes and I have insufficient space in my 8 Gb Nano.  I am unable to sync my iPod now.  How can I get my iPod to sync?  I only want a portion of my songs on the Nano.

    Hi wisemra,
First, make sure your iTunes does not attempt to sync automatically. Open iTunes, and select Preferences under the iTunes menu item:
Then, once you have hooked up your device and selected it, you should see the device Profile pages to the right. Select the Music tab:
Once you get to the Music detail screen, you will see the option to "Sync Music". You can then select "Sync Entire Music Library" or you can select "Sync Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums, Genres". Click on the second one. Then, below, you can select which of your music from the library you want on your device:
Your will show a list of your music. Mine doesn't because I sync with an iTunes library on different computer, but once you have selected the options I have shown you, you will see the music listed. Just pick what you want on your device and then click "Sync" at the bottom.
    Cheers,

  • Somehow my itunes started a new library and I lost my old library. Itunes will not allow me to sync new music to my ipod without deleting stored music from ipod. How can I start using this new library and sync the new music without losing existing music.

Somehow my Itunes started a new music library and I lost the old library.  Itunes will not allow me to sync new music from my computer to my Ipod because it is now in a different library. Itunes wants to delete all my Ipod music before sync any new music. How do I work around this. I think this happened during Itunes Upates.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1386 How do I get my music from cd's that is on my ipod to my library in itunes?  Got a new computer, thought icloud would help but it has erased anything is not purchased from my library.

How do I get my music from cd's that is on my opod to my library in itunes?  I got a new computer, installed itunes and thought syncing would work.  It only synced purchases.  Any music I had from cd's is not in my library anymore.  Then I turned on the cloud and it erased those tracks from my other computer as well.  Help please.

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

If you do happen to lose any purchased content, you can always redownload it from the iTunes Store again at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for information.
