Transferring iPod music to iTunes

My MacBook hard drive broke down and I had to get it replaced. I lost everything on my old hard drive, including my iTunes. Is there anyway that I can transfer the music in my iPod 5th gen. to the new iTunes in my new hard drive?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.

The transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7, for more on this function look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

If you're having trouble syncing your music and you're syncing music automatically (not manually) check the following items:
On the summary tab of your iTunes sync settings you have checked "Sync only checked songs and videos"
In your music library you have checked all the songs you want to sync to your phone
There are no exclamation points next to any of the songs you want to sync to your phone
You have authorized your computer for all Apple IDs for purchased music you want to sync to your phone (in Store>Authorize This Computer)
You have checked "Sync Music" on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings
When everything above is correct sync your phone and your music should transfer.

  • Synced ipod music to itunes and now its gone?

I tried to sync my ipod music to itunes by selecting music and then sync music. Itunes then told me the songs were erased from my ipod and the sync was completed, but i couldn't find the songs in my music or in my cloud or anywhere on my computer. It then told me to sign in to authenticate my song purchases so i did and then it only synced 11 of my songs that i bought through itunes using my account but not the others that i did not use itunes to purchase. I synced the other non-itunes purchased songs without loging in so could that have effected it? Is there a way i can get my 500+ other songs back?

Are you saying that before the music was on your iPod and not in yur iTunes library on yr computer and now it is in neither place?
    If so then
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
you will have to get other music from where yo obtained them before.
The problem was that you synced the iPod to other than the one syncing computer/library y can have.

  • Problem transferring iPod music to Computer

My hard drive went out before I could back up the music I had collected on it.
My iPod Nano 2Gig still has some of my most listened to music.
I have researched the instructions regarding transferring music from iPod to Mac, but it does not work for me.
the instructions say to open the iPod, drag the iTunes folder out on to the desktop.
However, the iPod does not show an iTunes folder when opened.
It does show calendar, games etc, but not iTunes or any songs at all.
    Any ideas or help?
    Thanks!

The iPod folder is hidden so you need to either use a command line instruction to unhide it or a utility such as Tinker Tool. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. • How do I transfer iPod music to iTunes libary?

I have had many problems this weekend trying to share music with my sons iPod. Having eventually given up on sending him the files I have been advised to plug his iPod into my iTunes and update manually. I have dragged the selected songs to his iPod and they are there!!! (surprise surprise) But now I want to organise them for him into playlists - so when I plug his iPod back into his pc and open iTunes on manual update I am unable to move any of the tracks from his iPod to his iTunes. I would really apreciate some help on how to do this the less complicated way. I have read in other postings that you can get a third party software to do it - but there must be an easier way to orgainse it. Any help anyone? SM

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news (having had a look back at your weekend's postings ;~| ).
iTunes to iPod is designed to be a one-way transfer only. Apple has implemented this limitation as part of their Digital Rights Management (DRM) and their contracts with the Record Companies. To that end you have to use a third party application which is unfortunate because this is inevitable more complicated then if Apple had implemented it.
This post by Zevoneer has a good list.

  • Playing (not stealing) a friend's iPod music through iTunes

I develop an application for control and playback of iTunes from external control systems, and have been asked if we can control playback of the content on an iPod. We set up inexpensive macs to act as music servers, and they want the doctors who come in and use the system to be able to plug their personal player into the system for playback during an operation.
In testing, I can plug in and control any of the three iPods around the house that use our account with no problem. But, if someone brings over an iPod and plugs it into my computer, can I play back the music on it through my computer? It seems reasonable.
+Please no flaming about "Because you're stealing" and the like. I pay for ALL of my songs. It's not the same as taking the music from the iPod with a hack, or keeping a fully-loaded iPod from a friend permanently. It's like someone bringing a CD over for a party and leaving with it afterwards.+

Thanks. I'm not sure how that relates. For example, I just plugged my iPhone into my PC that has never seen this iPhone before and the iPhone's music is all grayed out. The "Manually manage.." check is not checked on the PC, where it is checked on my Mac.
Then I plugged my daughter's Touch into the same PC (which also have never been connected) and I can access the music. The "manually manage..." check IS checked... What gives?

  • Transfering IPOD information to Itunes

    Hi,

    Thank you

If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

your ipod preferences are probably set to automatic.

  • Transferring iPod music from my iPod to my new computer

Help! I received my iPod video for Christmas and downloaded music and videos to it at my parents house in Kentucky (I have about 500 songs). I just downloaded iTunes on my laptop at my home in Houston and I bought new music from iTunes and went to sync it and it said if I did that then I would lose everything that is already on my iPod!!! That makes no sense! Please help me transfer the music on my iPod to my iTunes on my computer!
    Thank you!!
    HP   Windows XP

I just checked. Apparently, it's just a thing for
updating iPod, so I guess I can keep that.
So, what happened is... my computer with my iTunes
library is just completely crashed, so we had to wipe
the whole thing clean and start all over again, like
it was a new computer. I don't know if that erased my
songs off the computer or not, but I'm thinking it
did. I wanted to put my stuff onto my newer computer,
    anyway.
So only the first option of the above will work for
me. But some people said that I can just plug my iPod
into the new computer, even if iTunes is installed,
and just drag and drop the stuff in my iPod right
    into my library.
But I don't think this is true... the last time I
tried copying from a library that wasn't my own, only
the songs from the new library showed up, so I had to
go back to my computer and put all my songs back on
my iPod. This means that if I try plugging my iPod
into the new computer, all my stuff will be erased
and I will have absolutely no way to get it back.
    What should I do?
    Toshiba Windows XP
my only advice is uninstall iTunes and drag and drop from you ipod useing the first option i gave. as far as plugging into your computer with iTunes, w/o the songs in iTunes im pretty sure it will erase all the songs on your ipod, the same thing happened to me when i tried to do that, lucky for me i had a back up of all my songs on an older computer. so from personal exp, uninstall iTunes and use option 1 that i gave above.
best of luck, and let me know if i can help with any other questions you might have.

Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
