Transferring iPod Music to PC?

Hi,
I'm new.
I am currently running Windows XP Home Edition. About two weeks ago, my computer crashed and I lost everything. However, my trusty iPod is safe, along with all my music.
I was just wondering if there is any way to transfer the music from my iPod back onto a PC?
Any help would be apprecatiated.
Thanks so much.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
TuneJack Windows Only
CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Transferring iPod music to iMac

I am a new IMac owner. I have an iPod with a lot of music on it. I want to move the iPod's music to the iMac. There is already some music on the iMac but I want to add the iPod's music to it, or if necessary, erase what's on the iMac and move the iPod music onto to the iMac.
When I attach the iPod to the iMac with a USB cable, the iPod icon shows up the iMac screen's right side. But along with that icon, is the following message: "The iPod 'Jim's iPod' is synced with another iTunes library ((my old PC)). Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
In this message box are two buttons, "cancel" and "erase and sync" If I click on the cancel button, the iPod icon on iMac's screen disappears. I am afraid to click on the "erase and sync" button as I do NOT want to erase the music on the iPod…exactly the opposite…I want what's on the iPod to be on the iMac.
But with the iPod icon disappearing, how do I do that without erasing my iPod music?

When I plug in the iPod to the Mac, it does give me an iPod icon on the right side of the iMac screen. When I click on that icon, I get a window which has 10 files listed, e.g., Bootex.log, calendars, contacts, DCIM, notes, photos, etc.) but none with the label of "music".
At times when the top line reads "iPod", I can find the "transfer purchases from (user's) iPod" under file, but the second I click on that, then the iPod icon disappears and nothing happens, i.e., I guess the iPod is disconnected from the Mac.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help

  • Problem transferring iPod music to Computer

My hard drive went out before I could back up the music I had collected on it.
My iPod Nano 2Gig still has some of my most listened to music.
I have researched the instructions regarding transferring music from iPod to Mac, but it does not work for me.
the instructions say to open the iPod, drag the iTunes folder out on to the desktop.
However, the iPod does not show an iTunes folder when opened.
It does show calendar, games etc, but not iTunes or any songs at all.
    Any ideas or help?
    Thanks!

The iPod folder is hidden so you need to either use a command line instruction to unhide it or a utility such as Tinker Tool. • Transferring iPod music synced to an old iTunes account

I have an iPod which is synced to an old iTunes account we no longer use. When the computer crashed the thousands of personal CDs we had in iTunes went away.  I now have several iPads and a new iTunes account I would like to get on the same page....how can I get the music from that device to my new devices?

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.

  • Backing up, transfering ipod music to new MAC itunes !!!

I think I am missing something. I have reviewed and searched for this answer using many search terms.
I want to make sure I am on the right track.
I have an ipod touch with many apps and over 800 songs and many movies.
I need to transfer contents from ipod to new computer itunes account.
I am not able to disable account or device on old computer no longer have it.
IS my first step to back up ipod touch, if so can I do that just by using external hard drive or can it be done with file created in new macbook?
Then how do I then transfers all this to new itunes account, then to be able to sync and capture everything?
After that I am not sure what is next step?
Thank you so much in advance

If you can still get to your old PC, then just copy your library to the external drive. If you have no access, then you are going to have to either try one of the freeware programs like Pod to PC/Pod to PC or look for a commercial version to transfer your iPod content to your computer.

  • Transfering ipod music to itunes

How do i take my new ipod that my brother loaded with all his music and dump that new music from my new i pod into my itunes

Here is an article about it and a free download called tinker tool that uncovers hidden files.

Also you can google moving/uploading from ipod to itunes and get some decent results.

  • Transferring iPod music from my iPod to my new computer

Help! I received my iPod video for Christmas and downloaded music and videos to it at my parents house in Kentucky (I have about 500 songs). I just downloaded iTunes on my laptop at my home in Houston and I bought new music from iTunes and went to sync it and it said if I did that then I would lose everything that is already on my iPod!!! That makes no sense! Please help me transfer the music on my iPod to my iTunes on my computer!
    Thank you!!
    HP   Windows XP

I just checked. Apparently, it's just a thing for
updating iPod, so I guess I can keep that.
So, what happened is... my computer with my iTunes
library is just completely crashed, so we had to wipe
the whole thing clean and start all over again, like
it was a new computer. I don't know if that erased my
songs off the computer or not, but I'm thinking it
did. I wanted to put my stuff onto my newer computer,
    anyway.
So only the first option of the above will work for
me. But some people said that I can just plug my iPod
into the new computer, even if iTunes is installed,
and just drag and drop the stuff in my iPod right
    into my library.
But I don't think this is true... the last time I
tried copying from a library that wasn't my own, only
the songs from the new library showed up, so I had to
go back to my computer and put all my songs back on
my iPod. This means that if I try plugging my iPod
into the new computer, all my stuff will be erased
and I will have absolutely no way to get it back.
    What should I do?
    Toshiba Windows XP
my only advice is uninstall iTunes and drag and drop from you ipod useing the first option i gave. as far as plugging into your computer with iTunes, w/o the songs in iTunes im pretty sure it will erase all the songs on your ipod, the same thing happened to me when i tried to do that, lucky for me i had a back up of all my songs on an older computer. so from personal exp, uninstall iTunes and use option 1 that i gave above.
best of luck, and let me know if i can help with any other questions you might have.

The transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7, for more on this function look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Transferring IPOD music to PowerBookG4

I have accidentally deleted my files on my computer including my ITunes library. Is there a way for me to transfer the songs that I currently have on my Ipod mini to my PowerBook G4 laptop? What is the process I need to follow?
    Thanks!

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. • Transfering iPod music library to iTunes

I know i have done this, but i dont remember how.
I am sure i didn't use any other software to do it.
I know i have done it because i ran a script which someone gave me here on the forum, wich only worked for iTunes, then i deleted the iTunes library because it took up to much space on my computer ( oh why did i do that :P :P :P )
Can anyone tell me how to do this?
I know how to access the iPods hidden folder, but iTunes wont accept folders only files wich makes it a problem.

Assuming this is not an iPod touch, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=797432#797432
That information is pretty old, but I believe it's still valid.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases directly to the iPod by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise you will have to sync from your iTunes library.
