Transferring iTunes Library file to new Mac

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and have tried to transfer my iTunes Library files from my old MacBook Pro to my new one.  Both are running iTunes 11.  All music, video, apps etc are stored on an external drive which iTunes is set to look at.  I copied the 'iTunes' folder from my 'Music' folder on my old MacBook Pro to an external hard drive and then plugged it in to my new MacBook pro and replaced the 'iTunes' folder in my 'Music' folder with the existing contents.  However when opening iTunes 11 on my new MacBook Pro iTunes seems to create a new blank library file and overwrite the one I previously copied.  Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Are just your media are stored on the external, or is the whole iTunes library (which includes artwork files, the central iTunes Librarby.itl files, and other things)?
If the whole iTunes library, there's no need to copy the unused folder on your old computer. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library file on the external.
If you keep just your media on the external, copying your library folder is correct.  I don't know why iTunes 11 is erasing it.  One thing though is I believe the media folder location is stored in preferences.  I know I once changed it on my older iTunes version where I have multiple libraries and when I changed it for one it did it to them all.  You may have to configure this in iTunes preferences though that still doesn't explain why it erases the copied library folder.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

Hi, sorry for a noob question.

I did temporary try to move my external HD to my new Mac and use the "Choose Library" option on iTunes but it show me an error message "The iTunes library file could not be found in the folder".

I was able to figure this out. I just copied the iTunes folder from the old mac to the new one and problem solved.

  • If I transfer my iTunes library to a new Mac, will my iPod's data be saved?

I'm purchasing a new Mac, but I use an iPod Touch with a different Mac. If I copy my current iTunes library to the new computer, what will happen when I plug my iPod in? I'm hoping that if I make a copy of the library, I won't have to completely rysnch my iPod. I know I'll at least have all the playlists/videos/apps/etc on the computer by making the copy, and so I can just readd them, but I'm mostly concerned with my contacts, notes, and the progress I've made in some of the game apps. I don't sync contacts or notes to my current computer, though I will if I have to so I can preserve them, but as far as I know there's no way for me to save all the data in my apps if I have to resync it. Will my data be safe if I simply copy the library? If not, is there anything I can do to avoid losing it without having to constantly sync my iPod with the old computer?

if you copy the iTunes folder from the old to the new Mac, your Touch will just continue to sync with iTunes as if nothing happened.
make sure you copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder).

I am trying to follow the instrucitons for moving my iTunes account to a new Mac from a PC.  I wish to use the External Hardrive Method,  (also I have too much info to fit into the free iCloud space) ... and I am wondering how to handle several iTunes accounts for my son and daughter.  We all share the itunes media folder, but I use the control-click option to open either mine, my sons, or my dauthers account.
I.e.  On the old windows PC I have itunes, Richard's itunes, Justin's itunes, and Rachael's iTunes folders.  The instructions speak of the simple itunes folder ... so, do I copy all of these folders to the external hard drive and will things operate as before?

Yes, you copy each one's iTunes folder to the /Home/Music/ folder in each of their separate user accounts. You will first need to create a separate user account for each of them using the Users & Groups preferences.

  • Transferring Itunes Library to a new computer with songs on External HD?

    I have a similar problem
I need to transfer my itunes library to my new laptop
I believe i have to install a new version of itunes on the new laptop
My mp3's and videos are all manually arranged on an external harddrive. Only the itunes program is on the internal harddrive of my computer
Is it possible to transfer my itunes library to the new laptop? I want to preserve my playlist.
    A mistake i did....
Few months ago, i reformatted our old computer. Installed the new version of itunes. I also copied the .itl, xml music file from old itunes folder to the new itunes folder (re-installed itunes). When i opened the new itunes, my library was blank. What mistake did i make? Should i have hold the SHIFT key (i use windows) while i open the itunes so that it'll ask me to look for an old library?

    There is a simpler way.
Copy the iTunes folder containing your library files from My Music onto the external drive, but not into the music folder. It is best to avoid confusion by keeping them separate.
Install iTunes on the new PC. Don't add any music yet.
With iTunes closed, drag the iTunes folder out of the Music folder to the desktop.
Plug in the external drive and copy the iTunes folder from the old PC into the Music folder.
Adjust the permissions on this folder so the account you are using has full control. Here is help if you don't know how:

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/25/how-to-take-ownership-and-grant-permiss ions-in-windows-vista/
Before attempting to open iTunes make sure your external drive has the same letter as it had before - I think you already know how to do this.
You should also check the permissions on your music folder as above.
Fingers crossed, when you start iTunes things should be as they were on the old PC.
The crucial thing is that the path to the music files has not changed.

  • Transferring iTunes Library from PC to Mac (while keeping files on External Hard Drive)

    Hi,
I've been using iTunes on my old PC (HP 2000 Notebook) and accessing all of my music from a 1 TB Toshiba external hard drive. I recently switched to a MacBook Pro and I'm trying to get my iTunes Library (145 GB worth of stuff) on to the Mac while 1) retaining my playlists, checked songs, etc. from the old computer and 2) without having to transfer the files from the external hard drive on to the Mac in order to save space.
I've tried the Hold Options + clicking iTunes and choosing the folder (my iTunes media folder on the old computer is saved to I:\1 NTFS\Music), and when I choose that folder on the Mac, it instead brings up a really out-of-date iTunes library instead of my current one.
Does anyone have a solution that might help me get my current library on to the Mac?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do I transfer my iTunes Library to my new Mac while keeping all of my playlists/settings??

I recently bought a new MacBook and have had a very hard time trying to transfer my iTunes Library because I can't figure out how to do so without losing all of the specific info/settings! Is there any way to transfer my iTunes library so it appears on my new Mac exactly as it did on my old one? For example, checked and unchecked songs, my playlists, the date added/play count/etc information on songs. I can copy the entire iTunes library with a shared file, but then I lose that information. Please help!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • I just bought a MBP after my PC crashed. How do I set up my itunes library on my new Mac? I do not have a backup drive, and I was unable to recover anything from the trashed PC drive. Can the library be rebuilt/restored??

Finally made the switch from PC to Mac, after my PC crashed and burned. I Do not have a backup on an external drive, and I was unable to recover any data from the trashed PC hard drive.
Can I download my library, or is there a way to get my itunes content on my new Macbook Pro? I have almost 10 years of music and stuff on my iTunes, so I really hope there is a fix!
    Thanks!

No backup is a huge mistake.

  • Transferring iTunes library to a new HD

I'm in the process of transferring all my CD's uncompressed to my computer and have it "sync" (part of it) to my Apple TV replacing my CD player in my main audio system. I'm getting a 1T external HD for that purpose.
Yesterday, I tried moving my iTunes folder from a 80GB internal ATA HD to a 120GB external firewire.
All kinds of problems occurred. I lost many custom albums, and album art, iTunes wouldn't know where half the music was, etc. It was a mess. I was able to recover most of it, but I don't want to continue the transfers if I'll have the same problem once I move the all the music to the new 1T HD.
Is there a clean and safe way to make such transition, where nothing changes? Can iTunes automatically update the location of its library and re-link all songs to the new location?
    Thanks,
    J
