Transferring itunes library from laptop to a PC which has itunes library

I have had a search for the answer to my question. A little while ago I transferred my itunes library from my old desktop to my laptop as I was moving house. I now have the desktop set up again, and basically want to copy the itunes library from the laptop to the PC.
Do I simply copy it to my external hard drive and then to my PC, or will this result in some of my library items being deleted from my PC? I have read a few threads and I'm a bit (or a lot) confused!

I am having a problem. My husband has a new laptop and wants to transfer his library from his pc (running xp) to his new laptop. I have followed the apple guide to step by step but when i get to the step where you drag the music icon to the ipod e: drive location in my computers there is no sign of the ipod as any lettered drive all that i can see are the usual c:, printers/scanners and iphone as a camera? How do i get the pc to recognise the ipod as a drive to allow me to drag and drop the library.
thanks in advance.

The ipod is not a backup/storage device.
You need to copy everything from your old computer to your new one.
The Apple store will do this for you,  you can call apple support and they will help you, you can use google.

How do i get an itunes library from a phone when the computer has crashed and it needs to go on a new computer

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

  • Help Please..Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned). How do I transfer the library from the 160 to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista (ie merge the 2 libraries)? Thanks

Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned as it had a very noisy hard drive).
How do I transfer the library from the 160gb  to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista.
Nothing seems to help on the Apple support pages, so any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but not actually sure how to sync a second iPod with the library of the first, as I thought it would not recognise a new iPod for copyright reasons.
Also, the files are in a location on the pc but I had to do lots of formatting amendments in iTunes as most of the stuff was on mp3 files and the formatting was all over the place. I did not want to loose any of the work by simply asking the new iPod to look at the original file and would rather copy en masse from one device to another.
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • 1. How do I separate my library from my kids'? We have different itunes accounts, 1 computer.

How do I separate my library from my kids'?  We have different iTunes accounts and log in and out when we sync our various devices, all on one Windows 8 (new to us) computer.  All I want is to plug my devices in and sync ONLY my songs!  I've been managing to manually manage and check and uncheck songs, but it's such a pain and that doesn't always work anyway.  It is as if there are more than 2 locations for my music and I just want them all to show up in my own library.  Does that make sense?  Please help.

Stop manually managing content, that is simply not smart or efficient.
Create playlists with the desired content, sync those playlists to the device. iTunes remembers what to sync to each device.
If you really want to split the library, that can be done but it will be a time consuming and entirely manual process.

  • I bought a HD and the Itunes Stores say that the movie (Pretty Women) has Itunes Extras. Why I can not find it? It is a mistake from Apple? What happen if I buy the movie because the Extras and now I can not watch it? I have an Ipad last generation.

I bought a HD and the Itunes Stores say that the movie (Pretty Women) has Itunes Extras. Why I can not find it? It is a mistake from Apple? What happen if I buy the movie because the Extras and now I can not watch it? I have an Ipad last generation.

What version of iOS do you have on your iPad (Settings > General > About > Version), and is it connected to wifi ?
From Buy and play movies with iTunes Extras - Apple Support :
Here’s what you need to stream the new iTunes Extras:
Mac using OS X Mavericks v10.9.3 or later and iTunes 11.3 or later
PC using iTunes 11.3 or later
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation or later) using Apple TV software 6.2 or later
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 8 or later (You need to connect to Wi-Fi. Extras won't appear if you're connected to a cellular network.)
    An active Internet connection
You can use the steps below on your Apple TV, Mac, PC, or iOS device for any purchased, HD movie that features Extras:
On your Apple TV, select Movies, then select your movie to see the Extras menu. Extras aren't available from the Computer tile on Apple TV (Home Sharing).
On your Mac or PC, open iTunes and go to the Movies section in your iTunes library. Double-click your movie. If there's no Internet connection, the Extras menu will be skipped. The movie will immediately play if you already downloaded it.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap the Videos app, then tap your movie. If you're connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, the Extras menu will appear.

Cannot access iTunes Store from iPhone 4. Message says 'Your iTunes password was incorrect. Please try again'. I have tried resetting the password on my macbook. What should I do?

I'm having the same problem as well.  I use keychain access often to remind me of my passwords and was happy (initially) to see one for "iphone backup".  When I entered it I got the same error message:
"The password you entered to unlock your iPhone backup file was incorrect. Please try again."
    Really frustrating.
I searched many ways online, finally I tried "iPhone Backup Unlocker" to help me unlock encrypted backup password efficiently!

Question. Why can I print from my iPad 3 but not from my new iPad mini which has a lower spec?

The "lower specs" have nothing to do at all with why you cannot print. Are you connected to the same Wi-Fi network that the printer & the iPad 3 is on?

Don't know if I'm really dumb but...I installed itunes with my pod last year on my work laptop. Just used it to transfer my cd collection to my pod. I'd like now (just got a pc and broadband) to get my library off my laptop onto my pc (Windows XP). I'm not a 'technical' person but a)can it be done? and b)how? . I'll be eternally grateful 'cos the apple store is too intimidating...cheers.

b How to copy and move your music files from one computer to another
This is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply it to your specific situation and resources.
The safest and best way (in my opinion) to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure, rather than just copying the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important .ITL Library file (located directly in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (playlists, ratings, comments, playcounts, last played, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "My Music" folder from the old computer to the
    i exact same place
on the new one. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play counts, ratings, comments and all!
b It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
This process works best when cloning exact versions of iTunes, your music files and the iTunes meta-data files. It is also important to note that there is a new naming convention for the iTunes .ITL database file when moving from version 4.8 to 4.9. The ITL file is upward compatible, but not downward compatible (4.8 will choke on a 4.9 ITL file).
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
    1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step.
    2) Connect the two computers through a router. Or use a Crossover (for PC-to-PC) or Direct (for Mac/Mac or Mac/PC) Ethernet cable (See: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html). Copy files between computers.
    3) Connect the two computers via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. See: here as an example.
    4) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.). It will be a bit easier if your iPod (or copy medium) has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers.
    5) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
    6) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #5 above and load the files on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
    7) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.

  • Cannot access Desktop Itunes Library from Laptop

I have my Itunes library on my desktop pc which I access from my laptop with my ipod classic with no problems. My wife now has a 4th gen Ipod touch and i am trying to set up her laptop so she can access the same library and manage =her music via a playlist. From what I've read this should be pretty straight forward but I can't get it to work.
The laptops are running vista and the desktop XP, all with the latest version of Itunes.
The library was in my account on a user disk on the desktop. The system disk does not have enough room for the library (about 100 GB) so I moved it to a top level directory on the user disk. The user disl is shareable and I have ade the itunes library sharable. When I point itunes on my laptop to the new location I can access the new library. When I point my wife's itunes to the new library, itunes seens to accept it (no error message) but itunes stays on the local laptop library. On both laptops a drive is mapped to the user disk.
Any ideas what may be going on and how to fix it. I'm assuming itunes can be open on several systems at once? I also have home sharing on.
    Thank,
    George

    Welcome to the Apple community.
What are you doing when you get this message, are you trying to set up homesharing or trying to access your library.

  • Want to access desktop pc Itunes library from laptop pc

    Hi,
I have my Itunes library on my desktop pc, on a dedicated user disk.  I have mapped the disk to my laptop and can see all user disk folders and files on my laptop (wireless).  I want to be able to manage the desktop Itunes it from my laptop but can't seem to do it.  When I go to advanced in my laptop Itunes and enter the desktop Itunes as the default file, it accepts the location but the Itunes library does not chamge.  Any ideas?  I do not want to do Home Sharing, I want to access the desktop library just as if it was on my laptop.  I was able to do this befor but had to reinstall Itunes on my laptop and now accessing the desktop library no longer works.
    Thanks,
    George

There are a few things you could do, from networking the two computers to using an external hard drive. Have a look at this User Tip: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
If you can network the computers there is also this one: Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
There are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists directly from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions

  • Lost Itune library from laptop

We have our song libraby (mostly purchased music) intact on the desktop computer. When we recently got a new laptop, I was able to duplicate the same library on there too. I don't remember now exactly how I did that, but I know I had to "authorize" that computer.
Due to letting the laptop battery run too low, I lost the Itunes library there and would like to restore it. I don't want to move the desktop library, I just want to copy it back to the laptop.
    Thanks,
    Lenny

Probably the most straightforward way to copy iTunes from one computer to another computer is to network the two devices and copy over your iTunes folder. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders.
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
On the PC you'll find the iTunes folder in: \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the second computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.
