Transferring iTunes music from Mac to PC?

My mom and I gave my sister a new iPod nano to my sister for a gift. The iPod will not mount on her iMac G3 (10.3.9) where all of her music is but it will mount on her PC running Windows XP. Both computers have firewire. Is it possible to hook them together via firewire and simply transfer her Mac iTunes library to her PC iTunes library? Will the PC just show up as a drive on her Mac if she hooks the computers up via firewire?
Also, she has some music she wants in her System 9 iTunes library. Where is the iTunes library for System 9 located on the HD? Can she just drag her System 9 iTunes music from from whatever folder they are in to the iTunes library on her PC?

Thank you for the information about the location of the iTunes System 9 library and about needing MacDrive for a firewire transfer but I doubt if my sister would want to fork over the money for it. Also, she doesn't have any other iPod other than the new one we gave her which won't mount on her Mac. My sisters Mac and PC are networked as they are both hooked up via router to the internet but both she and I are clueless about how to get the PC to show up on her Mac.
My sister has music in both her iTunes System 10.3.9 library and her iTunes System 9 Library. She mentioned that it was a PITA to convert the complete iTunes over from System 9 to Panther. However, I am hoping that the just the music in the System 9 iTunes library doesn't have any kind of funky file formatting and just the music alone could be just be copied to her PC iTunes library.
My sister doesn't have her music backed up so I expect that she will have to go ahead and do that and use the CDs to get her music over to her PC. I was just hoping that there might be a faster way to do the transfer so she can enjoy her new iPod sooner.

When transfering itunes music from my older computer to a newer computer, do both itunes need to be the same version?

No... the target machine needs to be running the same version or better.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Combing iTunes music from Mac and Pc

Daughter originally had a Mac, which she had most of her music on. Then, her Grandmother bought her a PC laptop, just because. She has not bought music on on the PC iTunes, but she has put a few CDs on it. She would like to merge all the music on to her PC, including the stuff she's bought off iTunes. Is that possible by simply copying the mac iTunes library onto the PC or is there something else that has to be done?

  • Tranfer itunes music from mac to pc

Please help.. I originally was using itunes on my mac. Now I am using a PC. I want to transter all my music from the mac and put it on my PC, but have no idea how to. I tried connected my ipod to the PC, but it tells me I have to format it. What do I do?? Please help me!!

I don't know much about macs, but if you still have access to your mac, I can offer some advice (Someone else might have a better way). Go ahead and format/restore your ipod on the PC.
Connect the ipod to your mac, let it load all the songs. when its done, disconnect it, hold the shift and ctrl key on the pc WHILE HOLDING THE KEYS connect the ipod and do not let go of the keys til itunes opens and list the ipod, this stops an auto update.
goto edit>preferences>ipod and set the ipod to "Manual update" then hit the advanced tab>general tab and make sure "Copy files to iTUnes music folder" is UNCHECK then hit OK
Now you can use third party programs like podutil http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php to copy all your songs/playlist/ratings/playcounts to your PC and iTUnes. You can use there trail version to do this, after every 50 songs it copies it pops up a window you have to hit OK on for it to continue, but thats a small price for something doing all this free
    Hope that helps you out

  • Transferring iTunes music from external HD to new iMac

I've searched and read and still am a little confused, so apologies ahead of time for asking yet another transfer music question.
I had to do an erase and install of Leopard onto my iMac Intel; I've since performed a software update and now am running iTunes 9. My iTunes music is still on an external HD back-up.
Can someone be kind enough to list the steps needed to transfer my iTunes 8 library from the external HD to the iMac's iTunes 9 while maintaining playlists, album cover art, etc.? I also have some other music (mp3s) in a separate folder (user/Music/allofmp3) that I need to transfer over as well.
    Much thanks ahead of time!

If you only backed up your iTunes music and not the entire \Music\iTunes\ folder, you have no playlists, album cover art, etc.

  • Transfering itunes music from old 20" G5 to new 24" iMac via DVD

OK got the new 24" iMac, love it. Have the old 20" G5 with all my purchest songs and copied CDs albums on it .... OK so I burned 2 DVDs of all the songs about 1200 of them and am trying to transfer them onto my new iMac well it only lets about 130 songs from both DVDs get downloaded then states "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to ."
Well the funny thing is while either DVD is in the drive I can click on any song and it will play but after the above message comes up it ejects and all but about 130 songs have been copied... Help...Thanks

From the iTunes Help search for "iTunes Backup".
Backing up your iTunes library to CD or DVD:
*Backing up your iTunes library to CD or DVD*
You can easily back up your iTunes library, playlists, and iTunes Store purchases for safekeeping. To reduce the number of discs needed for a backup, iTunes can perform incremental backups (only items added or changed since the last backup).
To burn a DVD, your computer must have a SuperDrive. Some third-party DVD burners may also work. (For more information, click the first link below.)
To create backup CDs or DVDs:
    1. Choose File > "Back Up to Disc" and then select your options.
    2. Insert a blank disc (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW).
    3. Click Back Up.
iTunes burns the number of items that fit on one disc, and then asks you to insert subsequent discs to continue burning the remaining files. Don't eject a disc while a backup is in progress.
To restore backed-up files, insert a backup disc, choose File > "Back Up to Disc," and then click Restore.
Programs purchased from the Audible website are not backed up.
Discs you create using the iTunes backup feature can be used only to restore; they can't be played in a CD or DVD player
*NOTE: Make sure "Only back up items added or changed since last backup" is NOT checked.*
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Transfering iTunes music from Macbook Pro to Windows Vista Computer?

I just bought a Vista based computer and I wanted to use it for my music since it has a lager hard drive than my mac. How can I get my music off the mac and onto the pc? I have tried using the iPod to transfer it, but Windows will not read it since it is not formated for windows. I read that on a Apple article. At one point in time, I had taken some music off a Mac Pro or P5 desktop and put it onto my Windows XP laptop. I cannot remember how I did this though. If anyone has any suggestions, that will be great. Also would it be easier to maybe "link the two computers together"? I don't know if that is possible. You guys tell me. Thanks again for any replies on how to accomplish this or links to places that could help me. I really would like to make this work.

thanks i figured it out all i did was open ibooks and then click and dragged into a folder i made on the desktop and that worked wonderful so easy to do
    thanks again

  • Transfer itunes music from mac to pc

My daughter has a new PC laptop and I would like to get all her 900 songs off my mac and onto her PC. How do I do that? We have tried doing it via her ipod but the computer just wants to erase her ipod when she plugs it into the PC (I know this is because it's formatted to the Mac). I do have Pod to PC software and tried to use Xplay3 without any results. Is there another way to transfer the whole library?

My back up copy is on an external hard drive formatted for the Mac not a PC. I don't think this is possible for me to do. Can I burn the files to a DVD-R and then transfer them over and if so in which format should they put on the DVD-R? The support page was not helpful. No indication on how to transfer from a Mac to a PC.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

    Hello, Stephen.
Thank you for the question.  You will need to rebuild your iTunes library file in order to open an older version of iTunes.  Below, I have included the article that walks you through this process.  Start with the section labeled Re-creating the iTunes Library file.
