Transferring large files from my mac to pc

Hi guys, i'm trying to transfer a large file from my mac to my pc. Its over 7GB and my mac doesnt have a DL dvd burner so that's out of the question. I've tried transferring it over the network however the eta is 2 days which is a little too long. I've tried putting the file on my external HD but when its formatted into mac os extended my laptop does not recognise it and when the drive is formated in ms dos (fat) i am unable to put the file on to the drive (error code 0)
I've run out of ideas what to do so was hoping someone on here could help
Thanks

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
have a look at this little Windows program http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html
It enables Windows to read from HFS-formatted (OSX) harddisks.
Might be the easiest and cheapest solution, as others are not free.
MacDrive would be another option, but is not free (but has more features).

Stefan

if you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also delete it from time machine on the external hard drive ?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.
If you want to delete all backups of a selected item, such as for space or security reasons, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Having trouble transferring large files from SSD startup disk to newly installed internal HDD

Have just installed an additional 2TB Samsung HDD in place of my optical drive on my late-2011 MacBook Pro.
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 15inch late-2011
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B27
    Hard Drives:
      Startup = 120GB SSD
      New HDD = 2TB SATA Samsung M9T
    OS: Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25)
    Issue:
Installed my new 2TB SATA drive and it appeared OK in Finder. I was able to navigate to it and create new folders and move small files into it (under 100MB maybe)
Really want to move my iPhoto library onto the 2TB disk to free up space for Apps on my SSD, but when I try to copy/move it over it only does the first few MB then freezes and appears to timeout as the new HDD disappears from Finder and ejects itself. I'm surprised that the eject stuff shows for an internal HDD but that's a side issue.
Have read about similar issues in other OS versions, especially around external HDD and have tried the following already:
    *  Looked at power management of the hard disks to stop them going to sleep
    *  Have told Spotlight not to index the new HDD to prevent the indexing task causing issues
    *  Both SSD and new HDD are formatted using MAC OS/X Extended (not FAT)
    *  Have tried fixing permissions on both disks as I believe there can be issues in Yosemite
I'm still having a problem  despite trying the above. Struggling!
    Any help much appreciated.

Open Disk Utility. By selecting one of the two entries for the HDD please determine how it is formatted and what partition map it is using. I suspect you did not partition or erase this drive before use. If that's true, then do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
Now you can try your file transfers again. However, before you do I recommend you clone your SSD to the HDD so the latter could be used as your boot drive should it be needed. That will also create an Home folder on the HDD with the files you wish to move to it. You can then simply remove those files from the SSD to free up the space.
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new HDD. Source means the SSD startup volume.

  • Transferring large files from BB to PB

    Hi everyone,

  • Help transferring files from old Mac 10.3.9 to new Mac 10.6.1

Hi - I just bought a new iMac with Snow Leopard and I am trying to transfer my old files from my iMac running 10.3.9. I connected a FireWire cable between the two and restarted the old iMac while holding down the "t" key, using Migration Assistant on the new iMac. Migration Assistant kept saying that it was waiting for the old iMac to restart, even though the old one HAD restarted. I looked on the forums and saw that I should try to run Setup Assistant from the Utilities folder on the old iMac. But there isn't a Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder.
So I am at an impasse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the items I've found via searching suggest to avoid transfer or migration of older
files from the ancient 10.3 over to the newer 10.5 or 10.6. And when the old computer is
a PowerPC, the new Intel-based Mac may not see or be able to use some of the items.
The older Setup Assistant is supposed to do for Panther 10.3 what the newer Migration
Assistant does for Tiger 10.4; to an extent. The results from the older system are limited.
There is a way to have the new computer import some of the older computer's user files
and account info into it, before its first run; but with a leap so great between 10.3 & 10.6,
    the results overall won't be as satisfactory as just running the new computer totally new;
going through the setup and upgrade processes independent of the old Mac altogether.
The Apple Support- Snow Leopard page should have some upgrade and migration help
info on there which may be helpful: http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
It would appear that the instructions for migrating from an older Mac to one running 10.5
or 10.6 apply to the older computer, so the Panther software may be secondary if it really
matters at all in this process. See this document, and wonder along with me... This is not
quite the same as a migration assistant; but you don't need FW Target Disk in either case.

    The older method may not apply in the path you've chosen, outlined here, below;
but note there are matters about file and older app compatibility in the newer OS:

In the past, I've done a bit of upgrade and some migration action and found that overall,
the new OS X seemed to work a lot better with nothing old involved. That's just me!
And I'm sure each individual's mileage may vary...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Question about transferring files from a Mac

    Hi there!
I want to ask about the new iPad mini (and or the iPad 3) especially with transferring files from a Mac.
I normally just do the "normal" way of transferring files (.doc files, .mp3 files or .mp4 video files) i.e. via the USB port of my Mac. But is there a faster, easier and a wireless way to do it?
    Please advice.
    Thanks.

Yes, it will need to,install it on any machine you wish to use it on.
also, you should spend some time on the Drobbox website to see how it works. You won't find it in the Mac App Store, but can still easily using it on a Mac.

  • Transferring Files from a Mac to a PC

    Hello everyone,
Recently I have decided to sell my Mac computer. I transferred the files from it to an external hard drive and wiped the original hard drive. Now I would like to use these files on my PC computer, but the external hard drive doesn't show up when it is turned on. It works fine on the Mac, so I am guessing this has to do with the format of the hard drive (being Mac-proprietary). Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I was thinking of taking my Mac back out, transferring the files back to the Mac, formatting the hard drive for PC, then putting my files back onto the hard drive, but I don't know if this'll work.
    ~Jon A.

    Hello,
Unless you wish to transfer files back to the Mac and then copy them to an appropriately formatted (FAT32) external hard drive, you may want to take a look at a utility like MacDrive (which makes it possible to read Mac formats on a Windows PC).

  • I transferred PPT files from a windows based pc (microsoft PPT 2003), at first my macbook was able to run all animations in file, after some time it stopped running it, partly because i "switched on" something since this is my first time to use a mac ?

i transferred PPT files from a windows based laptop to my macbook, at first it was able to run the animations in the file no problem, its my first time to use a mac also bythe way, so i started downloading freebies like the VLC, FLIP4MAC, and other plug-in players, would it be because of this downloads that my mac now cannot seem to run the powerpoint animations any more ?

I don't think vlc would affect powerpoint.  What were those "other plug-in players" you downloaded?
I'm not that familiar with powerpoint so how are those animations played?  Are they windows media player files?  If so then flip4mac might affect them.

  • HT2518 If I am transfering my files from pc to mac, do I need to make sure the appropriate programs are already installed on the mac before or after the migration?

Just bought a Mac Book Pro w/Retina display.  Will be transfering all files from my pc to the mac.  Also will be installing Paralles and Windows 7 to run quickbooks.  At what point do I do the data migration?  Install the software that I need first and then copy the files?
Any help on this would be appreciated!

Install the software then migrate the files. Documents can't be opened without the software on the drive.

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.

  • I transferred my files from a G4 to a new macbook pro, but I can't access my old songs in itunes. I click on the mac tab to access mp3 and acc but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

I transferred my files from a G4 to a new macbook pro, but I can't access my old songs in itunes. I clicked on library in itunes and get the mac page to access mp3 and acc files but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

  • Move a big file from a mac system to a windows 8 laptop usb usb flash drive

Hello i am using a 32 gb flash drive to copy a 10gb file from mac os x to my flash drive. Then i want to insert that flash drive to my windows 8 pc and store it there.
I cant use a network connection to transfer files because i dont have a ethernet cable or an network connection yet. So i must use a smart procedure for making my mac communicate with my pc at home. I cant use any other types of sharing methods except for a usb flash drive. So i know that the mac cannot detect NTFS filesystems and i cant use FAT32 even though mac recognizes it because FAT 32 is unable to store large files abotu 10GB of size. Now i have to use i think ext3 or ext4 or also HFS but when i successfully copy the file from mac to flash drive then insert it into my pc, the windows 8 OS will not detect the windows pc because i dont think windows is made to detect these filesystems by default.
So i have tried using, HFS explorer and ext2/ext3/ext4 volume manager and ext2exploer or GPARTED live cd's latest version's copy and paste functions but they seem to not work propely and there is a problem, i cannot  see any flash drive in HFS explorer even though my drive is formatted as hfs.
So i need a program that can detect HFS or ext3/4 formatted flash drives and is able to copy a file from there straight to my windows 8 NTFS hard drive or a folder in it.
I have checked my firewall settings and defense settings. I am the administrator of my pc and i have even removed the windows password and the mac one but still i get lots of issus JUST to copy a file between a pc and a mac. Remmember that i have to copy files FROM a mac system running snow leopard to my windows 8 pc not the OTHER WAY were i have to copy from the windows to a mac.
Please tell me as much as possable about software out there and tell me software that costs money. I am able to buy any good software for doing this.
    Thanks in advance.

Take the flash drive to the PC and format it as exFAT.

  • How can I transfer files from my mac to my iPad, e.g., mp4 files.  Do I have to use iTunes?

How can I transfer files from my mac to my iPad in an easier way?  I'd like to put some movies on, and I can use iTunes, but is there another way?  I have transferred epub books using Dropbox.  Movies eat up a lot of dropbox space and the iPad has trouble getting them.

USB disk. You still have to go through iTunes.
    Connect device to computer/mac
Select your device in iTunes menu.
    Apps...
At thebottom of the page you will see the app.
Select it and the Add for windows and + for mac
    Hope that helped.
In the long run there is no way to access or uplood data on your device without iTunes unless you JailBrake....

  • How do I move large files from a Windows computer to my MacBook Pro? There are a lot of photos (tiffs

How do I move large files from a Windows computer to my MacBook Pro? There are a lot of photos (tiffs, jpgs, some photoshopped files), iTunes library, word docs. Is there a particular type of external hard drive that can be used or am I limited to copying stuff onto z-drive and moving that way?

If both computers are on the same network, you can share the files from the Windows host using SMB and mount the share on the Mac. Otherwise, the Mac should be able to read (not necessarily write) any storage device formatted in Windows.
