Transferring lots of small files to a USB - not enough space when there is!

I regularly transfer about 200-250 files (photos of about 1.2MB each) to a USB (size 2GB). I really want to just "Select All" then drag them onto the USB, but if I do this, I get the error message that there is not enough space. I end up having to select about 40 files at a time and drag each group, wait for them to transfer, then drag the next group. This turns a 2 second job into a 3-5 minute job. On of my iMacs has just started allowing me to do even less - only about 10 at a time, turning this job into a 10-15 minute job. I have discussed this with my USB provider, his only suggestion is I use a Windows computer, as he specifically tests the USBs he sends me for this error, and he does not have a problem with several different Windows computers! I usually import the photos with iPhoto then drag in, but it doesn't seem to matter if I take them straight off the SD card, I get the same error no matter which system I use. Please help! I sometimes need to do this 40 times in a day for 40 different customers.

I'm taking the photos OFF an SD card (straight from the camera) and need to get them ON to a USB drive. Taking the photos OFF the SD card is no problem. I either import to iPhoto, or drag them all into a file, no problem. It is getting them ON to the USB where there is the problem.
Thanks, hope this clarifies what I meant!

  • USB not recognized - even when there's no USB device at all (Windows 7, Pavilion dv7)

    Since a few days now I get the message
    'The USB-device was not recognized: One of the USB-devices connected to this computer does not work correclty. The device has not been recognized'.
    It keeps popping up from my right corner below, every 5 seconds if I don't click it. When I click the message, I get a list of USB devices (ports) there are available. There's one 'Unknown device'. Maybe it has something to do with the finger scan (biometric)? This hasn't been working very good lately..
    Even when there's no single USB device installed (normally I have a mouse and a Targus laptop chill mat installed as USB devices), it keeps popping up. I tried deleting the USB port from the list (or uninstall it) in Device control, but it seems it keeps happening.
    I suddenly got it, I did nothing specific of did not connect any strange devices (except for a projector on the external monitor exit, but that has nothing to do with USB). I also hear the sound for connecting and disconnecting USB devics randomly when I'm on my laptop.
    Anyone has any idea?

  • HT2518 Need to import files from PC. Not enough space on old PC to down load migration assistance.

    First of all, please be patient with me as the Mac is new to me and I'm trying, but old PC habits die hard. Ok I can't download Migration Assistant on to my old PC as there is no room. Trust me, it won't do it. So I've got most of my files, music,etd. on an external hard drive and need to transfer to my Mac. I've plugged the USB cord in, got the icon under devices on Finder, but can't find a "select all" button/choice to move them. I can do the photos, (had to do them in small groups with highlighting and dragging - there must be a better way!) but can't get files to go. They are for the most part MS office/excel. Can someone help me?

    Hi MtM,
    I am sorry about your problems. The issues here are that FC does not use MPEG streams for editing video these are highly compressed formats which will look poor when compressed out again. However I have successfully downloaded video from Sony's DVD cam before. Its not as "quick" as plugging your cam in via Firewire, but it works.
    You need a utility call DVDxDV I think it's $30 or so, or you can use another one called Handbrake which is shareware and works pretty well. Both of these utilities will allow you to import the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders from a DVD that is not copyprotected - such as like your camera's disc. Import the footage as DV streams and then import those in FC.
    This is what I did, and it worked fine. The only problem you may have is getting the disc into your MB which is a slot-loading computer - you will need a disc ring that fits over the small DVD's to make it the size of a standard DVD - I forget what they're called... (Just be careful when doing that, make sure the disc doesn't fall apart in the drive...)
    Or - if you can connect your camera to your MB via USB and see the contents of the disc, you'll be fine. Just tell DVDxDV "where" to find the VIDEO_TS folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to reinstall Windows on my macbook pro.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."

    I am trying to reinstall Windows (would not launch).  I removed the partition and started over.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."  I was successful before, what am I doing wrong this time?

    Try a restart.
    If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    I transferred my files, including iTunes, to a new computer. When I go to sync, it says I'm still synced with the old, do I want to erase and resync. AND then it says not enough space. What to do?

    Pictures, assuming they were taken with the device, can be copied off at any time.  This has nothing to do with syncing.
    If the pictures were instead synced to the device via iTunes, they are not the original images.  Instead, they are optimized copies of the originals for display on the iPhone.  There is software that can extract them, google it.
    Where is the backup of the computer?  And before you ask, the iPhone, like all iDevices, is not and has never been a backup device.

    I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

    Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
    If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
    If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

  • After accepting update to my time capsule, I can no longer complete a backup because there is not enough space.  I tried deleting old files, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any advice:

    My time capsule was updated through an apple download update on June 16, and now I cannot back up my computer.  The message is that there is not enough space.  I tried deleting my files, but it didn't help.  any suggestions?

    How much space is there according to airport utility?
    TM can be fussy.. Do a factory reset of the TC and give it a new name. Use short, no space and pure alphanumeric type names..
    And reset TM. See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Then set up TM again to the TC and see if TM will start .. the reset will not hurt the backup and TM can still find it on a renamed TC.

  • Consolidate Library, Not enough Space, itl files, genuius, external drive,

    In the interest of putting something back, thought I would post this
    Objective
    To have a single iTunes Library, on a Server PC, (Windows Home Server) so that if a change is made while on PC (a) or PC (b) we see the change.
    Setup
    PC (a) living room
    PC (b) kitchen
    Windows home server, on 24 x 7
    In doing this I made a number of errors, and hope you learn from this, and also found a couple of 'features' that made life harder.
    Standard approach
    1) in iTune preferences, alter the position where you want to store your data, so this could be
    //Server/Music/iTunes/Alison/Library
    You need the subdirectory as the Library is where your itunes will reside, and your internal itunes file one directory up.
    This process will change pointers in te internal itunes files, but still references the music in the various locations it is stored.
    2) Now go to the File Menu/ Library / Consolidate Library
    This will move all your music to teh location you specified above.
    At this point I ran into my first problem, despite having adequate space on the Windows Home Server (WHS) I would get the error 'not enough space to copy files'
    I believe the reason I was getting this error message was that some of the files paths were over 256 chat in length. There is also a limitation in WHS on this, but I believe the issue in this case was with iTunes, not WHS.
    To get around this issue, I changed the location of where I was going to consolidate all the files to, to an internal disk on the PC where my itunes library was. so Instead of;
    //Server/Music/iTunes/Alison/Library
    I used m:/iTunes/Alison/Library
    This worked, so I had all my data (now duplicated effectively, but consolidated) on the same PC.
    The reason people say use consolidate is that it makes the move easy and changes all the internal files, but as I couldn't consolidate to the location I required due to the error, I now have to move all the rest of the data manually.
    3) Copy the Library file on the local PC drive to the WHS Library Directory;
    Copy m:/iTunes/Alison/Library => //Server/Music/iTunes/Alison/Library
    4) I then edited the internal itunes files, so that it pointed to the WHS server location. I edited the itunes internal file;
    Settings\Alison\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml
    I did this in notepad, with a find and replace command,
    Find 'm:/'
    Replace '/Server/Music/
    The above bit does require some thought and if you have made it this far, have a look at the xml file structure, and you will be able to figure out how to alter the path.
    This has the effect of pointing the iTunes file at where the music is now stored, you can confirm this by starting iTunes and getting it to show the track it is playing in Explorer. If it is pointing at your new location you are good to go.
    Remember I only had to do this, as I was unable to consolidate to the location I really wanted to go to, due to the space error.
    Also note that I had 2gb memory on the machine I did the find and replace on, as Notepad is not memory friendly.
    5) Apple has some other internal files that need to be corrected as well;
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (if running genius)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (believe is genius related)
    sentinel (no idea, but saw this file !)
    To get these all corrected to the new WHS (or external drive) I created a iTunes Library.itl file with zero bytes in the directory Settings\Alison\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\, did this in notepad. I then started iTunes, and it created all of the above files with the new file locations. You can't edit the above files, apple encrypts them
    6) you now move all of the corrected internal files to the WHS home server location;
    //Server/Music/iTunes/Alison
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    sentinel
    7) Now you repoint the itunes to the new location for the internal files, specifically the correct itunes library, there are a number of references on the net to do this that you press the shift key(PC) or the option key (Mac)
    I am running a PC, and pressing the shift key while clicking on the itunes icon on the desktop does not work. You have to hold the shift key while starting itunes from the Start Menu, Programs, Itunes. This will then give you an option of which library to look at, and look at the library on the WHS drive (or external drive)
    Thats it
    Hope this helps someone who has to battle with iTunes like I did. Due to the variosu errors, size of the library (200gb) and other issues, whole process took 2 days, if doing this again would have taken a couple of hours.
    DGW

    Hiya, that's sweet to post what you went through!
    I have a question, though - are you able to have both PCs running itunes at the same time?
    When I try this, I get an error message that the ITL file is locked on the 2nd instance I try to open. I'm using an exHD, not a server.
    Also - all that editng of the XML file doesn't save ratings, date added, and some other metadata. If you'd just moved the ITL file, that metadata would be intact.

  • App won't unzip file even though touch shows enough space

    An easy one, I hope. My Reading Ally audiobook app won't unzip a 383mb file even though my touch shows more than 2 gb of space available. The app presents a message saying not enough space available. Any help appreciated.

    I can't find any app called "Reading Ally". Do you perhaps mean Learning Ally? If so, are you using the lateset version of the app? Have you tried restarting your iPod (a full restart, from the "swipe to turn off"). Note that according to the company, the app does not work with Learning Ally WMAdownloadable (AudioAccess) books. They also say that if you have downloaded books prior to February 28, 2011 you will need to re-downloadthese titles.
    If that's not the app you're referring to, please confirm the actual title of the app.

    OK.
    Try this:
    conf t
    service compress-config
    And see if that helps.
    If not, see if you can tftp the running config off the router and TFTP it back to startup-config:
    copy run tftp
    copy tftp start
    Then you can try a reload and see if it is cured.
    I googled and found a few cases where alot of ACLs or NAT rules could cause MALOC errors (you would see those in your logs) when implemented and could manifest itself in this condition, which could be cured after the next reload, which is why I suggested that.
    Of course, dont be remote when you do this and only do it during a maintenance window.

    I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

    Hard drive full or near full:
    You are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain hard drive space.
    Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
    If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
    If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
    Other things you can do to gain space.
    Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
    Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
    Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
    Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
    Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
    Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
    If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • HELP: ld: fatal: file /dev/zero: mmap anon failed: Not enough space

    Trying to build a debug version of our code using Solaris 10 and SunStudio 12, and we get this error:
    ld: fatal: file /dev/zero: mmap anon failed: Not enough space
    Any idea?
    The ld process grows to ~4GB then dies.
    The compile server has plenty of memory and swap available.
    Any idea? Our program is getting quite large, but I am sure there are larger ones out there.

    The only suggestion I have is to switch to stabs debug format (-xdebugformat=stabs compiler option) and don't specify -xs so that most of debug info is stored in .o files. Maybe it'll save some linker address space. Other than that, try asking on linker forum:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=63
    I know that it's a hot topic and you will probably get an answer as soon as someone from linker team take a look.
