Transferring mail from laptop to desktop

I don't have a .mac account and want to transfer mail received on my laptop to my desktop G5. I don't want to simply "forward" the new emails and open them on the desktop (they will all list me as the sender). Apple support suggested making a folder on my laptop desktop and simply copying and pasting the messages (from the user/library/mail folder) into the new folder, then dragging it into the desktop ~/library/mail folder. "Mail" sees the folder, but sees no emails inside. Is there a simple way to move new messages from one Mac to another without using iSync or a .Mac account?

Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored in ~/Library/Mail. Copying these (the preferences file and the entire Mail folder itself, not just its contents) from one computer to the other is all you need to do in order to have an exact copy of all your messages, mailboxes and Mail settings on both computers.
In order to avoid potential permission issues, copy the files operating on the destination computer and while logged in as the user that's going to use those files. Also, be sure Mail isn't running on either computer while copying those files.
Alternatively, if what you really want to do is merge the mail stored on one computer with whatever mail is already stored on the other, then File > Import Mailboxes should be used instead.
DON'T try to synchronize mail between computers with a file synchronization utility. Mail keeps a reference to every message within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in a global Envelope Index file. If this file is modified in more than one computer between synchronizations, there is no way a file synchronization utility can handle the situation properly.
Another, more subtle, and potentially more dangerous issue, is that Mail may use different *.emlx sequence numbers to name the same message in different computers or, worse yet, the same sequence number to name different messages in different computers. Again, the only thing a file synchronization utility can do about it is either overwrite files with the same name (thus potentially losing data) or not synchronize them at all.
Mail data "synchronization" at the filesystem level can only be done reliably if it's a one-way operation, i.e. if the entire contents of the Mail folder in one of the computers are overwritten by the entire contents of the other.
This is not a Mail thing. You would encounter similar issues with any other mail client because there is no way you can avoid the same files being modified on both computers if you use both between synchronizations. The only reliable way to achieve mail synchronization between computers is using an IMAP account and storing mail on the server -- that's precisely what IMAP is for.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Lightroom 4.4; transfering images from laptop to desktop

I am using lightroom 4.4.  I have a more than 10000 images on my desktop computer.  I have just bought a laptop and installed lightroom on it.  When travelling I intend to perform basic library functions (deleting poor images, create file names for photos, add keywords and other meta data info) with the laptop. my lap top has limited storage, so I will be using an external drive.  I have two questions:  1. how can use the laptop external drive as my temporary catalog so as not to use up space on my SSD drive?  2.  what do I need to do ensure when I transfer the photos from the laptop external drive to my desktop catalog that file names, keywords and metadata etc are included in the transfer.

Q1 is easy to answer: You can open a specific catalog (at least in LR 5.x) and also create a new one, of course on any drive You'd like.
Q2 is much harder; I'm just starting to solve this for my own.
One solution could be to have the catalog on some private (Own-) Cloud space while the pictures reside on the HD. Dunno if that can be done, but with my reasonably fast connections I will try that anyway.
A much more complicated way would be tu use DBSchemaCrawler and diff (from the cygwin-collection) together with some scripting elements. Those could be the integrated LUA from LR, Windows Powershell or bash (also from cygwin), and probably the native sqlite commandline utility. :-/
Either way, the pictures have to have the same drive letter and path on both computers, since this root is stored in the DB. One can use the subst command from windows or a softlink under Mac OS To ensure this.
IF noone else comes up with a good and working solution, stay tuned; I'm pretty sure I can solve that before the end of the year.

  • HT4527 Transferring music from laptop to desktop?

Hi! I am a masive music junkie and have over 2k songs on my laptop that I want to transfer to my desktop since the laptop is close to dying and I don't want to lose all that music never mind all the money I spent on that music. I don't have an external hardrive nor do I have an ipod (it died) I remember a few years ago when I transferred my music for another laptop all I had to do was go to some drop bar list to export the song it was time consuming since I had to do every song but I can't seem to find that opinion now. Any ideas would be great and no I don't have the money to buy an external hard drive since I just got the desk top, please I want to save my music before my laptop mother board dies taking everything with it - Thanks It isn't an apple computer it is Dell sorry.

Type "move itunes library" into the google search bar.

  • Transfering Photoshop from Laptop to Desktop

When I bought my laptop it came with photoshop pre-installed. I have now upgraded to a desktop computer and I want to get my photoshop from my laptop onto my desktop but I don't know how. Can someone let me know if I can do this and how please?

Whether or not it is legit to do that depends on the arrangement you have with whoever installed the software on your laptop.  It is possible that the software is intended only for the machine it was installed on.  You should check with whoever sold you the software to determine what the terms of its use is relative to your laptop versus other machines.  If they did not provide you with installation media then it will likely be the case that you need to contact them to acquire the same software for a reinstall.

  • Sound Buzz when transferring file from Trash to desktop

I get the occasional Sound Buzz when transferring file from Trash to desktop
Its a Short "grounding" buzz similar to slowly plugging an electric guitar when the amp is on, but its loud !
I am just using the internal sound,

Brett - thanks for that input, but as stated in my original post this happens whether I do the copy within Finder, or from inside Bridge.
Your note did inspire me to try one thing though: I UN-checked my Bridge preference to export caches to folders when possible, then I went to the folder I was trying to move (on the NAS) and did Tools > Cache > Purge Cache. I found that if the folder contained only files and no other folders, then I could move the folder to my desktop. However, if the folder in question had nested folders, then I still run into the same conflict.
Question: since this conflict does not happen when moving a folder from one computer to another computer (but only from the NAS to a computer), I'm not sure how your logic holds when you say "Bridge is trying to cache the files you are moving and creates a ".BridgeCacheT" file before the remote version is copied"
To answer your other question, we use AFP or at least is says "afp://server.local" when we connect. My apologies for not being an expert on this. The icon of the NAS on the desktop looks like the icons for the other computers.
Thanks, I'm still trying to solve this. It's really become a major problem for us as we now have to drag files individually (rather than by folder) when we want to do something with them. -- Jim

  • Import photos w/edits from laptop to desktop

I used my laptop to edit photos I took this week while on vacation.  I'm looking for the most convenient way to import them from my laptop to my desktop including the edits.  Basically don't want to re-edit the photos.  Whats the best way?  I'm running LR3 3.5 and OSX 10.7.1 (Lion) on both computers.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Are the photos imported into both computers’ LR catalogs, yet, and/or is it your intent to make this a one-way transfer from laptop to desktop, or are you wanting to work with the photos in both places from here on out?
If it is a one-way transfer and they only exist in the laptop’s LR catalog, then select all the photos you want to transfer—perhaps use a collection so you can re-select them easier, later, use (on Windows it is) LR / File / Export as Catalog to create a small, temporary LR catalog with the settings and to a flash-drive/card-in-card-reader/other external drive or across the network to a temporarily location, containing just the edits/settings of the photos in question, and then copy that catalog and the photos to the desktop, then import that small catalog into the desktop’s catalog and use Locate Missing Photos from one of the thumbnails to re-hook-up the photos if the paths are different between the to computers.
A slightly less useful alternative because it doesn’t contain ALL the settings in LR, is to write XMP files for all the photso in question, then copy the photos and XMP files over to the desktiop, then import the photos into the desktop catalog, where it’ll pick up the current edits from the XMP files.
If you already have the current photos in both locations, then if you can keep track of what you’re doing well enough, either remove the exact set of photos from the desktop and import them, again, using one of the two procedures, above, or you can copy the XMP files over from the laptop and re-read all the metadata for the photos to get their edits up-to-date.
If the photos are supposed to be moved from the laptop to the desktop, then after you’re satisfied they are safely on the desktop, you should remove them from the laptop to avoid confusion.  If all the photos on the laptop’s LR are moving, then just delete the catalog, but if only some are, then remove them from the catalog and hard-disk by deleting them using the same selection you used to export the photos or write the XMP files, earlier.
If the photos are supposed to be worked on in both places, then having the photos and LR catalog on an external drive is the only reasonable way to do this, so after consolidating all the photos into one LR catalog using the above prodedure, then copy all the photos to an external HD and copy the LR catalog as well, and tell LR to open the catalog on the external drive and re-find the missing photos because the path to the external drive isn’t the same as on the local drive, I wouldn’t think, although I’m a Windows guy so am not exactly sure.  Once you are satisfied everything is working on the external drive, figure out a way to back up that external drive somewhere so if you drop it, you still have your work, and then you can remove the photos from the local drive on the desktop, unless you’ve decided that is where your backup will be.

  • How do I transfer video from laptop to desktop

I spent the entire weekend away from home filming basketball games.  Instead of buying a bunch of memery
cards, I did about 3-4 games and put it on my laptop, filmed 3-4 again and put on my laptop, etc.
I was hoping that I could install them on my desktop later which has the power to edit these videos.
I use a Canon HF200 camcorder with HD video,  big big files.  I have a 16GB card, can I just add them back to card through the laptop, then insert card into desktop to open them back up, or is there a better way?
Please help, I've been working on Highlight video for this team.  most of my project is on my desktop and my time limit is nearing.
    Thanks

I've had the camcorder for sometime and made plenty highlight videos using elements.  I just had this issue I wasn't sure about transfering video from computer to computer.   I bet I got over 200 gb of video this weekend alone.  I made nice highlight video from the football season with it and the parents loved it.   they showed it at the banquet on a 100+ inch projection tv and it looked really good off a dvd I burned for them all.
look up 75dizzyd on youtube and see my basketball highlight sample I just did.  Any more info would be appreciated.  you can never learn enough abou tthis stuff.

  • Exchange Mail will not Send mail from Iphone when Desktop computer Shutdown

A client of mine has an Iphone that I have setup to connect to his Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server using Activesync. Everything works fine and dandy until he shutdown his desktop in his office. Than he is no longer able to send any mail from his Iphone but is able to receive it no problem. Anyone have any insight on this problem?

Your problem is with Cox and Cox not having an authenticated SMTP server.
Not many ISPs provide an authenticated SMTP server and I'm not sure why - especially with laptops and devices such as the iPhone so popular.
I'm a Time Warner/RoadRunner customer for cable and internet access and I quit using my RR email account several years ago for this very reason. I switched to using my .Mac account as my primary personal email account which has an authenticated SMTP server. I'm able to send messages with the account regardless the internet service provider used for internet access. My business POP account also has an authenticated SMTP server and no problems sending with this account either - via a number of different Wi-Fi connections and EDGE.
I suggest seriously considering switching to another email account. A Gmail account is free, can be accessed as a POP or IMAP account with the email client on your computer as well as with the iPhone's email client, has a good spam filter at the incoming mail server, and has an authenticated SMTP server.
If you ever move or decide to change your ISP from Cox to a different ISP, your email account and address will not need to change. You can access and send messages with a Gmail account with any ISP - the same with a .Mac account. And you'll have much more server storage space than Cox provides.

  • Transferring Photos From Laptop to ipad mini

How do I transfer photos from laptop to my ipad mini?

You can e-mail them to yourself.
You can upload them to something like dropbox then download them onto your ipad
If you get the camera connection kit and an SD card you can put the photos onto the SD card (there is a naming convention to follow) then export them off the SD card onto your iPad.
There are photo syncing apps although I don't have one to recommend
You can use iTunes to sync them onto your ipad (although what you sync on via iTunes you must use iTunes to sync off when you're done with them so it may/may not be the best way for you)

  • Transfering Mail From old mac To MacBokk Pro

I passed from a mac Power Book to a MacBook Pro recently i was tring to move some of my mail from the old mac to the new one and the old adreses but i did not know how to do it is there any one who can help me

Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail folder.
Similarly, Address Book stores the settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and the data in ~/Library/Application Support/AddresBook.
Other applications store preferences and data in other places. You may want to ask in the appropriate forums for more information on those.
If both computers are running the same major version of Mac OS X, copying these files & folders from one computer to the other is all you need to do in order to have an exact copy of all your data on both computers.
In order to avoid potential permission issues, copy the files operating on the destination computer and while logged in as the user that’s going to use them. Also, be sure the affected applications aren’t running on either computer while doing that.

If the major version of Mac OS X on the new computer is different, some applications may need to convert the old data to a new, different format. The data format used by Mail 2.x, in particular, is different from Mail 1.x. Problem is, the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken, and it may work or it may fail miserably, so be prepared for it if the version of Mac OS X on the old computer is older than 10.4 (Tiger).
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • I'm having trouble transferring songs from Laptop to devices

I'm having trouble transferring songs from my laptop to both my iPad 2 and iPhone 5. I just added a new album to my library, and where before I used to select the songs I wanted to add to my devices, and then drag and drop them, this doesn't appear to work. I watched the tutorial and it says there is an 'Add to' option when you clkick on the device name in the top right hand corner. That doesn't appear on mine at all. Completely confused and nearing the end of my tether!

  • Transferring Mail from one Mac to another via Screen Sharing

    Hi,
I live in California. My Mother lives in Montreal. She has to computers. A Mac Mini and new MacBook.
What I want to do is transfer her Mail from the Mac Mini to the MacBook via Screen Sharing or Remote Management. In other words, I want to do this from my computer.
How does one go about this? What somewhere is needed to make it all work?
    Thanks in advance.

you can't screen share between 3 computers. but you can between two. the easiest way is via ichat. users need to log into ichat on both computers and then you can send a request to share screen via ichat. it's also possible to do it without ichat but that might be more difficult that your mother can manage if she is not too computer savvy which I suspect is the case here. first she has to enable screen sharing in her system preferences->sharing. that's easy. but if she has a router (does she) then she need to port forward port public port 5900 on the router to the port 5900 on her computer so that you can get through the router when trying to screen share from outside. particular instructions on port forwarding depend on the router model. once the port is forwarded you can vnc to here computer from where you are by going to go menu-.connect to server in finder. then in the popup enter
    vnc://ip.address
where the ip.address is the ip address of her router. she can find it out by going to this website for example
    http://www.whatismyip.com/
but all in all, it's much easier with ichat as no port forwarding is required.

  • Transfering web site from laptop to desktop

I have been doing my iWeb websites on my desktop but have made the mistake of doing another website on my laptop. Is it possible to take my laptop website and add it to my desktop library of websites in iWeb?

Yes it is. You can do it one of two ways: 1 - move the domain.sites2 file from the laptop to the Desktop, rename it and put it in the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder with the other domain.sites2 file. You can open each in turn by double clicking on them (drag them into the Finder's side pane for quicker access); 2 - use iWebSites to merge the two domain files. Be sure to keep a backup of each domain file just in case the merge doesn't go as advertised.
If you use method 1 the last published site will the the default site if you use the minimum URL for your MMe account: http://web.me.com/YourMMe_AccountName/
If you use method 2 the site that is on top of the left hand pane in iWeb will be the default site for the minimum URL.
