Transferring Mail from one Mac to another via Screen Sharing

Hi,
I live in California. My Mother lives in Montreal. She has to computers. A Mac Mini and new MacBook.
What I want to do is transfer her Mail from the Mac Mini to the MacBook via Screen Sharing or Remote Management. In other words, I want to do this from my computer.
How does one go about this? What somewhere is needed to make it all work?
Thanks in advance.

you can't screen share between 3 computers. but you can between two. the easiest way is via ichat. users need to log into ichat on both computers and then you can send a request to share screen via ichat. it's also possible to do it without ichat but that might be more difficult that your mother can manage if she is not too computer savvy which I suspect is the case here. first she has to enable screen sharing in her system preferences->sharing. that's easy. but if she has a router (does she) then she need to port forward port public port 5900 on the router to the port 5900 on her computer so that you can get through the router when trying to screen share from outside. particular instructions on port forwarding depend on the router model. once the port is forwarded you can vnc to here computer from where you are by going to go menu-.connect to server in finder. then in the popup enter
vnc://ip.address
where the ip.address is the ip address of her router. she can find it out by going to this website for example
http://www.whatismyip.com/
but all in all, it's much easier with ichat as no port forwarding is required.

When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.
    Any help would be welcome

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.

  • Transferring mail from one account to another

I have a mobileme account and I did use that for mail, I then switched to a personal domain and copied my mail over using the mail app, just dragged and dropped from one mail box to another.
Now I want to put the mail back in mobile me, (storage issues), but for some reason certain emails give me this message The IMAP command “APPEND” (to INBOX) failed with server error: Message contains invalid header. This stop me form just selecting all and dragging back to mobile me
They are both IMAP accounts and there is heaps of space on the mobile me account
    Any clues?

Another option is to sign up for Verizon Your Domain via www.keepmyemail.com - This service is ~20/year and should allow you to keep your email addresses as long as you link them to it before cancelling your account.

  • Blurry photos once e-mailed from one mac to another

I am an iphoto novice and need some help to understand why my pictures are blurry. I have two imac computers in different places. I e-mailed myself 20 photos from one computer (where they look and print perfectly) making them all into smaller files for sending. I have now tries opening the pictures on my other computer Mac OSX 10.5.8 and all the photos are blurry, is there anyway of restoring them back to their original or am I going to have to print them off the original computer. The orignal computer is slightly older although I may have upgraded to iphoto 9 whereas the one I can't open the photos on is iphoto 8. If I need to upgrade how do I go about doing this.

You need to tell us more for a definitive answer- like exactly how you did the e-mailing and describe blurry and how you are seeing that (mail, preview, iPhoto, etc.)
making them all into smaller files for sending.
this is most likely the problem - smaller photos have less resolution and quality - for best results you would send full size photos are maximum quality - when you choose to reduce the quality you will get "reduces quality"
is there anyway of restoring them back to their original
There is no way to "restore" a photo that you intentionally made low quality back to high quality - you can transfer again in full quality using e-mail, a network connection or a CD or DVD
To upgrade to iPhoto '09 purchase the iLife '09 disk from the Apple store

  • How do I migrate my old emails in Mail from one Mac to another?

I've upgraded from a G5 (OS Tiger) to a Mac Pro (OS Leopard). I've set up Mail on the Pro, but I want to migrate/move all my email folders, Inbox messages, Sent mail, etc. from my G5 to the Pro. I thought manually grabbing all folders and files from Library/Mail/... and placing them in the same place on the Pro would have done the trick, but no emails show when I have Mail up.
I've searched through Apple Support, but the closest match is migrating from a PC to a Mac. Not quite what I'm looking for.
This seems like a pretty standard question. Hopefully someone out there can walk me through it.
    Thanks!
    Steve (aka Twitchy)

    Hi Steve,
The best most complete method would be to use Migration Assistant to Migrate everything, but if they're networked with File Sharing enabled on the older one, then connect using the G5's username & Password, then on the new Mac use Mail>File>Import Mailboxes>Apple Mail...

  • Copying Mails from one Mac to another Mac

    Hi There,
I want to copy all my emails (pop account) from the harddisk of mini Mac OS X 10.4.6 to my PowerBook OS X 10.4.6. How to do? I tried it through .Mac but that doesn't work (when synchronising the source with .Mac the emails don't appear in Mail of .Mac.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks

    Tom & Stuart
yes, Mail-File-Import Mailboxes will do it for the email messages & folder structure ( but not the account settings, perhaps?)
Copy the Mail folder from A to (say) the desktop on B
then on B, use Mail-file-import mailboxes-mail for mac OSX & point the importer to the copy of A's Mail folder.
The messages/folders will indeed appear inside an 'imported' folder, but can be moved freely from that.
    Tom -
you may find, as I suggested, that you can't use the account on B that was on A.
This can also be transferred, by locating the Folder named POP-username@ mail server inside the copy of A's Mail folder & copying it into B's Mail folder. Then in B's Mail-prefs-accounts add a new account & enter the details exactly as you did when you set up the account on A.
If the messages aren't visible in the 'new' account
Quit Mail & start again, & all should be well.
Make a backup of B's Mail folder and /home/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist before you do this, & Quit Mail before moving any files/folders using Finder.
I hope that'll do what you want..... & with the backups made first - you can recover easily in case of mistakes.

  • Transferring data from one mac to another

I recently bought a second hand mac from ebay and it was pretty empty. There are some settings still from the previous user.
My old mac's backlight has died and the only way to use it is to link it up to my tv.
I have tried using the Migration assistant via WI-FI and ethernet cable and both haven't worked.
I'm considering taking the hard drive out of the mac and using it as an external hard drive. There are a couple of programs i've tried to download but dont work and i'd really like my firefox settings back!
I was also wondering if i was able to take the RAM from the old mac and install it in the new mac?
    All suggestions welcome.

The model 5,1 is the Aluminum Unibody and doesn't have a FireWire port which would be the easiest way to transfer.
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Case-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_cp_e_0
You can't take the RAM from the 3,1 and put it in the 5,1. The model 3,1 (Late 2007) uses 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM and the model 5,1 (Late 2008, Aluminum Unibody) uses 204 pin 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM
However RAM is cheap for the 5,1 http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

  • Taking 'local' mail from one mac to another

    Hi there
I saved loads of email 'On My Mac' in mail, on my old iMac. I have now upgraded, set up everything and installed Snow Leopard... I now need to know how to import all my old mail so that it is on my new mac in the 'On My Mac' folder, and appears like it did.....
    Any help most welcome
    Thnx

do you want just "on my mac" mail or your whole Mail setup. it's easiest to do the latter. quit Mail and copy the entire fole /users/username/library/mail AND the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from the old computer to the corresponding locations on the new one. start Mail and it will look as it did on the old computer.

  • Moving local mail from one Mac to another

I just got a new Mac and I'd like to move all of my local mailboxes to the new machine. I do NOT plan to use the setup process that attempts to get all of your files and settings, so I need to do this "by hand." I made the local mailbox named "local_archive", so is it as simple as copying the ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/local_archive folder from the old machine to the new? Do I need to also get (or avoid getting) the ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/local_archive.mbox folder too?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    Hello Sean.
Are you running Tiger on this to be transferred from Mac?
Regardless, it is best to use the Import Mailboxes feature for any mailboxes to be transferred.

  • Import mail from one mac to another

    Hi,
I have 3 months worth of mail on my laptop, and I want to transfer it to my desktop, what is the easiest way to do this?  The laptop is a PowerPC Macbook Pro running 10.5, the Mac Pro is running Lion.  It's about 2000 messages.
    Thanks for help

There is a bug when doing “export mailbox” and import mailbox functionality.
    Workaround:
      > Open Finder and under the “Go” menu, hold down the option key.  The “Library” sub-menu will show up.
      > Copy the entire “Library > Mail” folder to a USB disk (it will not work if copying to a shared drive for some reason)
      > Take the USB disk to the new computer and do an “Import Mailbox” and select the copied Data file.  There will be LOTS of folders that come up for import, you can browse through and deselect what you don’t need (e.g. trash or junk mail), OR just import everything and then clean up from your mailbox.
      > The imported folders will show up in mail under the “On My Mac” area.

  • Transferring Mail from one computer to another

I have an iMac. I bought a MacBook and did the whole thing with the ethernet cable, copying my iMac to my MacBook, so that the two machines were pretty much identical.
Then I used the MacBook exclusively for 4 months (was traveling). Now I am going back to the iMac, and I want all the messages I received on the MacBook to be on the iMac.
Since they started out as identical, am I correct in thinking that I can replace the mail on the iMac with that of the MacBook? That way, it will contain all the emails and contacts from the last four months, in addition to what was already there.
    I found this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12010148&#12010148
is that the way to go about it?

Did you copy the entire /Home/Library/Mail/ folder and the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file?
You must first quit Mail before the transfer. What type of mail account do you have - POP or IMAP? The latter may take some time to first fetch the server-based mailboxes then transfer message headers. Sometimes this takes opening Mail then see if it reconstructs everything then quitting and reopening so it connects properly with the server-based mailboxes.
Or you may find your Inbox is inside another set of mailboxes listed in the sidebar.

  • Need information on transferring project from one Mac to another

I just returned from a trip, during which I started and added photos to an Aperture project on my MB Air.  When I got home and started up my MacPro after the month's absence I was surprised to see the same project appear on my desktop.  I thought I understood that Photo Stream/iCloud simply "shared" the month's photo stream between devices and computers, but was not aware that a project would also appear on each computer.
The photos were actually added physically to only the MB.  Question:  Does the project that appears on my desktop actually contain all of the photo files and information downloaded to the desktop?  Or, are they simply in the "cloud" somehwere with a link in Aperture?
Also, if they are not physically on my desktop, how would I get them there wihtout actually importing every SD card again?  Thanks!

Unless you actually imported them into the library on the desktop system they are only in the photo stream (and on the Air)
You can do one of two things:
You can import them from the photo stream. Make a project in the library on the desktop and drag the images from the photo stream to that project.
Or else export the projects you added the images to on the Air as a new library, copy that library over to the desktop and import it into the library on the desktop.
The advantage to doing it this way is if you have made any adjustments to the images or added metadata then that will be added to the library on the desktop. If you copy from the photo stream you will only get the originals

  • How can I transfer entire contents of Mail mailbox from one Mac to another?

I've long wondered how to do this:
I have two Macs - an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
I have categorized several hundred emails on the MacBook into a separate "mailbox" by itself. Let's just call it "Project XYZ emails" for the sake of discussion.
I need to transfer ALL of those emails +en masse+, hopefully still categorized together into a separate "Project XYZ emails" mailbox file, from the MacBook to the iMac. How is this done?
In the old days, when I used to use Eudora, this was quite simple -- one could physically locate the separate desired "mailbox" file in the Finder and just copy it from one hard drive to the other, and then place the mailbox into the appropriate place of Eudora's file structure on the second computer. Relaunch Eudora and voila, the new mailbox is there for viewing, etc.
But in Mail, I can't find any tangible "file" on my hard drive that represents a "mailbox" in the Mail program. And that includes control-clicking the application file itself and choosing "Show Package Contents." When I do that, I can see, after burrowing into the folders, a single large file called "Mail" which I think contains ALL mailboxes lumped together. But I can't see a way to separate them for individual manipulation.
Any suggestions or ideas on how to copy entire mailboxes in Mail from one Mac to another?

    Thanks! Seems to have worked.
Once I imported tham, I had to fiddle around renaming mailboxes and "moving" the emails to the desired locations, but that only took a minute. So overall, seems like that's the solution! I only wish that the steps to do this were made clearer by Apple in the Mail "help" menu -- where I couldn't find any mention of how to do this.
A happy ending, in any event.
In case anyone reads this in the future, let me add in the missing steps, to make it perfectly clear:
In Mail, choose 'archive mailbox' from the mailbox menu.
+Copy the newly created archived mailbox file, which will probably be a file with the suffix ".mbox," from the original machine to the second machine.+
On the second machine: In Mail choose 'import mailbox' from the file menu.
+The emails will now appear in a new mailbox in Mail listed under the name "imported" or "import." If desired, either rename the mailbox, or create a new mailbox with the correct name, and "move" all the emails into it.+
    Done!

  • How to transfer app data from one mac to another without using syncing of the iphone?

Right, recently I have tried to change which computer my Iphone syncs with so that my older mac can be sold or disposed of in some profitable form. I have successfully synced all of my music off of one mac onto another via home sharing at which point I connected my phone to my new computer which suggested that the phone needed a software update. Immediately after doing this I realised that my updated Iphone 3GS would no longer sync to my old computer and attempted to sync it just to confirm this- it failed and stated that the iphone could only sync with itunes 10.1 which is a higher spec than that mac can hold. I then feeling doubtful that things would work out tried to carry on as if this problem were absent but I later discovered that I could only transfer the apps that I had synced to my phone to my new mac and all unsynced apps appeared lost because as I stated previously I could not sync with my older mac which contains all of their data. I have consulted the online apple manual for the phone and all it states is the method of transferring purchases in itunes which I tried and is what lead to the copying of my synced apps on to my new mac. What I am asking is is their anyway that I can 'cheat' so to speak at app transfers. I know that somewhere on my old mac the files are stored with the information of the lost apps but I cannot locate them and would not know how to merge them into my newer itunes if I were to copy and paste them to a memory stick (assuming that this is the right method) Other than this is their any other way of downgrading the upgrades of an iphone or somehow tricking itunes into running a higher update than the computer spec? I've tried all I can and this is really annoying- please help!!!!!!

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking... I'll have to look on my Mac at home to see exactly where they are, but you should just be able to copy all the apps from your old machine to thumb drive or over the network and put them in iTunes on the new one, then sync. Right click on one of the apps in your iTunes library and choose Show in Finder. That will point you to where they are.
If you're asking how you can do this and maintain data contained 'within' the apps themselves (high scores, game progress, etc), I don't think there's any way you can do that.
