  • Importing DVD video into iMovie

I am a novice at video. I have DVDs of 20 year old 8mm Camcorder video that I want to edit in iMovie. I am using HandBrake to make mp4 movies which I can then import into iMovie. But it takes hours for HandBrake to encode the mp4 files and then even longer for iMovie to make thumbnails even of just a few minutes of video. What am I missing? There must be an easier way to do this???.

I got everything to work using the Disk Utility except I didn't get any audio imported to iMovie. Funny thing is when I use DVD player to play the mounted image, it plays both video and audio perfectly. I just can't get the audio imported properly into iMovie 08.
    Any idea?

  • Copying a dvd video into iMovie

I have a DVD of my sons football game that was created b on of the dad. It is set up with a menu like you get with iDVD. I am trying to load on to my system so I can put into iMovie where I can cut out portions of the video and add music, etc.
How do I get this loaded on to my system??

    Are there instructions
Of course. Do a Google search for the home pages of the applications and see what they have to offer. I believe DVDxDV even has a free trial mode.

  • Transferring Hi-8 video into imovie

I am very new to this. The reason I got the Mac was to edit old home videos. This has been a nightmare so far.
But , now I have found that there are two products out there that ( I hear ) will do the job real easy.
The two products are DATAVIDEO DAC200 or the CANOPUS ADVC55.
What I want to do is to transfer the Hi-8 tape onto the mac. Be able to edit and make a new DVD from that one tape and also DVD's from a compilation of Hi-8 tapes.
Basically, put all my tapes onto imovie to have the capability to create whatever kind of DVD that I want using bits and pieces of all the tapes.
    Help!!
What I was doing before I found these products was: copying the tape onto a DVD using a DVD recorder. Then using Handbrake on the mac to convert to mpeg4. Then transfer to imovie. But it was taking about 10 hours for 1.5gb. And after all that, I could not see any of the clips to edit. I could watch the movie ...that was it.
Please, any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I borrowed a friends Digital 8 camcorder and put my old analog Hi8 into hers and connected to my iMac via Firewire (it works as a converter), however there was a bug in iMovie 08 that it didn't recognize it, but I read that iMovie 06 would, (downloadable free if you have 08). So I transferred it in through 06 and pulled it into 08. Cumbersome, but works. The link below discusses it.
    http://forum.videohelp.com/topic341622.html
However, I decided to wait for Apple to fix the bug before I spent the time to transfer 50+ tapes, which they apparently did in January, according to this post:
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=83125
I haven't tried it again, but they say it works now, if not you can do iMovie 06. You just need to borrow somebody's Digital 8 for the converter. I haven't tried using my old Hi8 as the player and use my miniDV connected in between as the digital converter, but I've heard that works.
I just figured out how to send it direct to an external hard drive since 1 tape takes up 25G. I've bought several 500G for $100, however, I just noticed that they only have USB, and a Firewire one would be faster. I created a project in iMovie 08 using video from the external and it did not seem to be a sluggish interface. Now to figure out editing, then send it to iDVD... they make it sound so easy! I've yet to make my first movie!

  • Question About Importing DVD Video to iMovie 9

I have some home DVDs with 3 types of files on them (.BUP, .IFO, and .VOB), and they are all grayed out when I try to import them in iMovie. iMovie help says the format has to be in MPEG-4, DV, or .mov files
What's the recommended converter/process to get the DVD video into iMovie?
All I really want to do with the video is capture clips from the DVDs

    Hi Appleman1958,
Here's situation: I have several DVDs that were burned from home videos (high school football games, etc.). I don't know whether they were burned using iMovie/iDVD or some other program. I need to pull clips from the individual DVDs and combine them into a new DVD. I've edited movies that were recorded on my digital camera with iMovie and burned the project to a DVD using iDVD, so that part isn't a problem.
    My questions are as follows:
    1. I downloaded the QuickTime component and Streamclip, per the instructions in your post dated 12/5/09. After I installed each application (or thought I did), I dragged the files from the "download" folder to the trash. Now I don't see the applications in the Finder. Did I uninstall the applications when I dragged the downloaded files to the trash? Also, the file types in the trash are "Disk Images" (.dmg). Is that correct?
    1. Will the QuickTime MPEG2 Component/Streamclip process work for DVDs that weren't created using Apple software?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Import home video DVD's into iMovie

I want to import my home video DVD's into iMovie for editing and backup. What is the best way to do this? I have already tried creating a disk image, but somehow when I open these images with iMovie, some parts of the original video are missing. (for example the video on DVD is 60 minutes, but the video opened on iMovie is 50 minutes). I also tried to convert to MPEG 2 using MPEG Streamclip, and purchased the MPEG2 Playback component from Apple Store, but it turns out that this component was intended for earlier versions of OS X, so I could not even install it. I am currently at a lockdown, please help me out!!!

There are directions on the MPEG Streamclip website on how to get the MPEG2 Playback component installed on your computer (I'm assuming your running Mac OS X 10.7). I'm cutting and pasting them here in case someone else runs into the same problems.
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component
The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard
Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).
If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg": if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on "Account" in the store menu, then click "Downloadable Software Purchases," enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.
If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

  • Bringing Videos into iMovie from DVDs

I am a dance teacher and I have several dance teach DVDs. I created most of these from a VHS to DVD machine. They do work on standard DVDs and on the Mac.
But, after spending the day reading through the iMovie 11 instructions, I have yet to find any explanation that would help me capture any of this video into iMovie 11.
please send response to [email protected] I am not at all sure where this response goes and it seems to be going to my work email but I have retired.
    Jim

Use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on the DVD to DV. Click here for more information.

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". Any advice would be most welcome!! Thanks

    MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

  • Getting Analog Video into iMovie

    Greetings,
OK, so I have successfully imported digital video into iMovie on several occasions with my "newer" video camera (a SONY DCR-TRV80).
Problem is, I have and older camera (a Canon ES800A) that uses 8mm tape. I've been wanting to get rid of the camera (a nice one for it's time) but, I have about 6 tapes worth of video that I'd like to at least permanently archive.
I suspect there is some hardware device out there that will allow me do to this - can anyone tell me would I need to be shopping for? (hoping it's not prohibitively expensive!)
    Any help would be appreciated!
Next up? - a camcorder with a hard disk!
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi : I have a related problem maybe you could help me with....I've got about 6 Beta tapes [ remember them ? ] that I'd like to transfer to DVD while there still viewable. About 4 hours of tape on each....
I have an Optura 20 DV [Canon] and a Beta tape machine. The optura 20 manual says you should be able to run the RCA plugs out of the Beta unit into the AV jack on the Optura, then FW out into I - Movie. OR you can record onto a DV tape, then into IMovie. I've had no luck with either method. No Beta material shows on the DV monitor no matter what I do. It does play into a standard T.V from Beta, so I know the tape AND the Beta machine are working.
Do I need something like that Canopus Converter ? ....don't know if that' s the exact name .
    Any suggestions appreciated...Thanks
    Braden

  • Video Converters to get Sony Video into iMovie

I am new to the video side of the world and need some advice. I am trying to import videos into iMovie. I am trying to import video from a Sony Cam, a DVD tht I made myself but mow would like to edit and my Flip Video. Additionally I will import video from a friends Nikon. Apple "suggested" handbrake, streamclip and toast. I see there a number of them on the app store. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Zapple

Handbrake will be useful for converting the DVD back to a format that iMovie can edit. MPEG Streamclip requires some extra software still sold by Apple caleld the MPEG-2 QuickTime Playback component, download the beta of Streamclip and follow their directions for installing it will get the MPEG-2 component installed correctly. This will then let you open the DVD directly in Streamclip and get pieces out of it or just convert the whole disk to Apple Intermediate Codec. As for Sony and Flip video, don't know specifically which camera you have and what formats they record in, but there's likely a way to convert most of them into Apple Intermediate Codec which is the native editing/playback format that iMovie uses.
