Transferring .mov files with H.264 codec to FCP

I am looking to purchase one of the Canon SLR cameras that offer video
( 5D mark 2 / 7D , etc ) and I understand that the .mov files they generate
( using the H 264 codec ) are not happily worked with in FCP.
Can anyone describe or go into what is then entailed in saving them in
a different format - one that is easily worked with in FCP ?
Is that a simple / quick step, or is it time intensive, etc. ?
Would really like to form a better understanding before purchase. I want the
camera primarily for its still image capability - so choosing another video
format ( better for file coding, etc. ) isn't so much an option.
Nonetheless, I would want to make use of the video features and am just
wondering whether it is a bit of an inconvenience, or a big fat pain in
the @$$.
Thanks for any help,
Sterne

I've made a droplet that converts files from 30 fps to 29.97 and into ProRes 422.
http://www.wallyandnay.net/Droplets/30-%3E29.97ProRes422.zip
I take my files, drop them on the droplet, go watch TV while they convert, then edit in FCP. Is it quick? No, but you can have only two of the following things
No transcoding, amazing quality, cheap price.
Put up with the transcoding.

  • Power PC G5 Unable to Play .MOV File with Avid DNxHD Codec

Our client is sending us .mov Quicktimes with Avid DNxHD Codec.
It wouldn't play on our Macbook Pros, but no problem, I downloaded the codec and it ran fine afterwards.
Not having the same luck with our Power Mac G5 Workstation.
It runs on Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8.
Downloaded the codec for Leopard from this link:
    http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545
    Nothing changed.
I play the file and all I see is black as the timeline runs.
How should I fix this issue?

The Power Mac G5 does not have an Intel Processor like the newer macs do. Could that be root of issue?
It is a definite possibility. The link you posted indicated the Mac v2.1 component was compatible with OS 10.5.5 and later which would normally imply QT 7 with or without Intel CPU. However, the editing software applications do seem to restrict their use to "Intel only" Mac systems. For instance, Pro Tools v8.3 and higher are listed as "Intel Only" software. Did try the v2.01 QT codec component or look for anything older?

  • Quicktime .mov files with MPEG-2 codec playback error

I have a series of .mov files, and I'm not able to open them in QT X or QT 7.6.6. The codecs listed in the Info for the files are: MPEG-2, Linear PCM, and Timecode. Original format is MPEG HD, at 1920x1080. Does anyone know how I can play them back? I don't have final cut editing software on my computer unfortunately and VLC opens the files so I can view the pictures, but they have no sound. Help!

Have a read through this thread, it might help.
At least your $20 may not be wasted.

  • After Effects render constraints for .mov with h.264 codec maximum dimensions 2000px x 2000px?

Is there anyway I can create  .mov container with h.264 codec with dimensions 3840px by 1080px? When I try rendering from AE it lowers dimensions to under 2000px. Same thing happens when I try to save as from Quicktime. Programs I have access to are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Final Cut.
    Thank you for your help.

Yes, It does seem to be mutliple LDCs. They asked for a final output video as 3840x1080. The  requirements are this and they finally sent this display.
    Basic Requirements
Ensure the resolution of the file (width and height in pixels) matches the specs provided exactly, even small deviations can result in poor quality playback or no playback at all
.MOV animations must use H.264 encoding
We recommend 15fps (frames per second) for animation
File size should be roughly 1 Megabyte per second or less, i.e. a 10 second .MOV file should be 10MB or less.
Thank you for your help, I will ask on the other forum.

  • How on can get the plaback of .mov files with Redcode Codecs?

    Hi folks,
I am not able to play the .mov files created by Red camera so..
how one can get the playback of .mov files with Redcode Codecs?

Well, one typically doesn't edit with any of the proxy-files the RED camera produces.  You need to convert the RED footage to ProRes.  Log and Transfer can do this, if you download and install the RED Log and Transfer plugin.  Or you might need to use RED software to convert the footage to ProRes.  But those Red proxy files won't import via log and transfer, and are NOT editable in FCP.  Gotta convert to ProRes.

  • Can't view .mov file with quicktime

Hello. I need help viewing a .mov file with Quicktime 7.5. It was recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and given to me on a dvd. But when I try to view the .mov file with Quicktime, I can hear the audio but the screen is black. Sometimes, it asks me to continue to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d64 63&csubtype=69636f64
I'm not that computer savvy - what is wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry. My "then" (above) should have been "they".
They sent you a data DV containing the "source" from the camera and the HDV codec isn't available on your PC so you can't view the file.
Ask the authors to convert the file using H.264 Video codec (or others) so your Windows version of QuickTime can play the file.

  • Trying to export a movie compressed with H.264 out of AE

I am having some issues with exporting a movie compressed with H.264. I am using AE CS3. When I output with the settings of this image:
    http://intuitionusa.com/ae.gif
I get an error message that is below in the image.  I have to leave Quicktime in the top settings in the output module and then select H.264 in the format button.  It allows me to render out, but a message appears saying it is better to select H.264 from the "format" dialog box.
    * Also, when I export out to H.264 the file size is much larger than just using quicktime pro.  I think it might be better to export an uncompressed file from AE and then use QT pro to compress but that is going to use up a lot of disc space.
    SHoutzager

You're probably getting that error because of a frame size/codec conflict.
Your comp is 900x600, and the MainConcept codec is looking for a frame size of 720x480 (NTSC DV).
Using the Quicktime wrapper to export the H.264 is a fine optioin, however, AE will not do as good of a job compressing to that codec as Quicktime Pro, or a dedicated compression application would do. AE can only cache a limited number of frames for the compression process (frames before and after the current frame), and as a result, the compression quality and filesize will not be as small as they could be by using a different tool for the job.
As such, your supposition about rendering out an uncompressed/losslessly compressed movie and then running it through QT Pro (or another compression application) yielding superior results was a correct one.

  • M4v movie file in h.264 format freezes in itunes/quicktime

I have some movie files in .m4v format with h.264 codec, and when I play these in itunes/quicktime, the video quickly freezes but the audio continues to run without pause. I've noticed that a movie in .m4v as an MPEG4 works fine, however. Exact same result if I run a .mkv movie with h.264/MPEG4 (works for MPEG4 only)
    I'm using a Unibody MB OSX 10.5.8.
I'm hoping to run the h.264 in itunes so I can stream it to a new apple tv because of the better quality vs. MPEG4.
    Any thoughts???

  • Get 'Generic Error' when attempting to import .mov files with transparency?

I get the 'Generic Error' when attempting to import .mov files with transparency? I'm trying to use mattes with an alpha channel but I cannot import them. I have had this same issue since cs6, now I have it with cc 2014? Any clues would be most appreciated.
I have uninstalled the DVCPro Codec, but it didn't help.
I have tried converting the .mov file (which is now automatic in Yosemite) and this creates a ProRes4444 Codec, Again no luck with import.
I've seen this issue on the web, but never a solution? Anyone?

    Hi Terence,
I tried iPhoto Library Manager but it could not solve my problem. Opening the iPhoto library I can see that the reference to the pictures are pointing to my old location not to the new one. I considered running a script that would change all pointers since this is basically what is needed (in my case from /Volumes/RAID1/Fotos/XXX to /Volumes/Fotos/XXX). Instead I inserted a soft unix link to make to connection but that did not work. It is referring to the airport disk by the airport name rather than the mounted disk name. Very strange indeed. The problem is maybe not in iPhoto but in OSX? Anyway, maybe the only way out is to take some hours and manually run through all linked photos... cumbersome and annoying!

    Søren

  • Mov files with Alpha channel

I do alot of video with transparent (Alpha Channel) backgrounds.  I have always converted my avi files to flv files for the web without any issue.  Now I am being asked to put my video onto iPads, iPhones etc.  They won't accept flv files & I read that I can use QuickTime mov files to create an alpha channel.  I have tried several ways to install a mov file (with Alpha) using dreamweaver onto an existing webpage but it always ads a black background with the video.  I have tried the  wmode - transparent option but doesn't do anything.  I know the mov file I am using does have the alpha channel attached because I can bring it back into my rendering program and see it fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    What is up!
Based on my tests, it appears that the Mavericks embedded QT structure no longer considers many of the legacy compression formats to be supported under Mavericks. These formats were, by default, turned off under Lion and Mountain Lion which may indicate that Apple intends to drop even passive native support sometime in the future. Files containing Animation or PNG compressed data are no longer QL compatible and now force automatic QT X v10.3 conversion as mentioned above. Even worse, it appears other commonly used fomats like DV/DV in DV and AIC/PCM in MOV are also being relegated to this group. Luckily, DV/PCM in MOV, HDV/PCM in MOV, and ProRes422/PCM in MOV, along with all of my H.264/AAC/AC3/Chapter M4V distribution/iTunes managed files remain fully compatible with both QL and QT X v10.3 under Maverisks. This last is significant for me since many files containing AC3 as the primary audio stream are no longer QL/QT X v10.3 compatible with certain file extensions and/or container types which now appear to be checked in specific situations. Unfortunatly, what we've seen and learned thus far seems to be just the "tip of the iceberge."

  • Converting mov files with Quicktime Player for iDevices

I wasn't sure if should post this under iPad or here or at all as it is about coding, but it is about coding for Apple iDevices that can't display Flash, using Quicktime Player or QT Player 7 Pro:
I'm trying to add the ability for Apple iDevices that can't display tutorials I created in Flash, to see them with H.264. I read that I can simply open the original tutorial that luckily is a .mov file with Quicktime Player 10 in Snow Leopard and File > Save For Web and QT will convert to H.264 and also output several files needed to upload to your server.
But the only options are for iPhone, iPhone (cellular) and Computer. I assume an iPod would use the iPhone file, but iPad didn't exist yet.
I chose iPhone and Computer for my test. I got 2 .m4v files a .jpg, a small .mov and a .html page with the code I needed to copy/paste to my target html page.
Uploaded the files and could see the tutorial movie with my iPad fine. Using FireFox, I saw the beginning of the movie, then got the beachball. After a long wait, I tried a force quit and found that my Mac Pro was crashed too so had to hard shut down. Hate that.
Rebooted the computer. Tried accessing with Safari this time and it worked fine.
I also own Quicktime Player 7 Pro pre Snow Leopard (I'm running Snow Leopard now) and tried the conversion with it and noticed a few more config choices, like for frame rate. But the resulting code was about 29 lines of code with expected parameters versus 2 lines of code in the QT Player code which actually really surprised me. With both apps they have JavaScript references for the head tab to files on Apple's library on their site.
So.. I'm wondering why FF and my computer crash, I did output for computer as well as iPhone. And what to do for FF users and the fact that there's no specific output for iPad, am I OK just using the iPhone output since I can see the file OK on my iPad test.
Last, I've been reading about HTML5 versus Flash, but assume that what both my QT apps are outputting is HTML4. In the QT Player code there isn't even an embed tag, let alone the video tag I've read about, just a href to the exported Saved For Web .mov file, which I assume must point to the .m4v files that QT outputs and puts in the same folder as the other files, but there's no direct reference to them.
Sorry for the length, or if this isn't the place for these questions, but I do want to get this right before I convert about 20 tutorials
I wonder if I should wait until Lion and see if QT is changed to fix the FF crash and adds output for iPad?
One last thing: when you access the converted file with an iPad, first you see a jpg of the first frame with "Click to Play" in the center. When you do, you get the movie with a play triangle which you have to press to actually start the movie. But when you access the same html file with Safari, all you have to do is click the "Click to Play" and the movie starts as expected. Bug?

QuickTime X and QuickTime Player Pro create slightly different html code (but it all works about the same way). The "click to play" image file, a "reference" movie, multiple versions for different devices and the html code to preview the page and use as copy/paste into your Web page.
QuickTime X has fewer options than QuickTime Player Pro. The iPhone preset works just fine on the iPad.
Your Firefox crash may have been just coincidence and I doubt it was caused by the page code.
You may want to wait a while longer for the HTML 5 code because browser support is still in the learning stage and millions of PC users still use out of date browsers.
The reference movie points to the different versions of the file. The code "reads" the device and serves up the correct version for it.
I don't own an iPad but I suspect it works like my iPod Touch. All of my QuickTime files have the play "triangle" so the click to play image style page requires two clicks on it.

  • I suddenly can't watch .mov files with the QuickTime Player x?

I suddenly can't watch .mov files with the QuickTime Player x? There is always the message, i should look after new software! Can you help me?

Handy-dandy cut and paste to the rescue!
you need to install some other stuff to get the full file functionality back.
    Here's the list.
    Start with QT 7.6.6. - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
Get Perian, and install it. - http://perian.org
    then VLC, - http://videolan.org
    DivX - http://divx.com - and the
    Flip4Mac package from Telestream - http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/
A52/AC3 downloader: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21875/a52codec - In this installer package there is an audio A52Codec.component. DO NOT USE IT! Throw it out and use the one that is linked below.
This is what I've put into my system and so far I've gotten every file to run fine, even my oldest videos.
These are codecs you should see.
    In System/Library/QuickTime
         AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component* (*optional if you've bought it)
         DivX Decoder.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    In your Home/Library/QuickTime/
AC3MovieImport.component (you may or may not want this component, in some instances it causes conflicts. In my system, it doesn't. Who knows why? I don't.)
         Perian.component
For AC3 sound that is in most .mkv files, you need the A52Codec.component, this is the one you want, here: https://code.google.com/p/subler/downloads/detail?name=A52Codec.component.zip - unzip the file and put the component into the System/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components
Go back to your Perian settings and in the Audio Output button, set it to 'Multi Channel Sound' - Ignore the message Perian puts up and select it.
By doing a 'Get Info' on your files and where it says 'Open With' - default them to the QuickTime 7 program. Perian no longer will work with QuickTime Player so you must have QT 7.6.6 and set it so it is the default for all the filetypes you use.
It works perfectly with QT7. So far I've gotten ALL my old videos to play.
.avi, .mov (with the AC3 sound), .wmv, .flv, .mp4 and .m4v. all run fine as do all the older formats.
    Good luck!
    Deb.

  • IPod touch can't synch .mov files with iTunes.

My iPod touch can't synch .mov files with iTunes. The error message says that the files were not transfered because they can't be read on my device.  I'm not able to transfer any mp4 files, either.  These are my own short animations, small files (under 2MB). Home sharing is on.  I'm trying to synch with the latest version of iTunes on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.  Thanks.

    See:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
iTunes: Frequently asked questions about viewing and syncing videos
Yo may have to use a third-party computer program like HandBrake to convert the format to one compatible withthe iPod

  • How can I link 1 movie file with several logic projects?

    Hi all,
I've been  working on the music for a film with a colleague of mine and are sharing logic files via dropbox. 72 cues had to be altered for logisitical reason to work in someone else's studio for the final mix. Since I had a copy of the movie on my machine and my colleague had a copy on his we thought that if we put our movie into the root directory of our logic project's folder then the movie would automatically load up with the projects after we shared them via dropbox. We checked to make sure that both movies had the same filename. Unfortunately this did not work and we had to then reassociate 72 cues individually with each logic project. With such limited time to prepare the cues for the final mix this really took too much time.
Is there any way in logic (9.1.8) to associate 1 movie file with a number of logic projects quickly, without having to open up the project and select open movie?
    kind regards
    /mischa

Seems to me that if you both had the movie file in the same location on both of your drives (eg on Macintosh HD at root level, in no other folder) then all the project files would search for this common path and find the file.
The problem arises when there is even a small difference between path names.
Unfortunately, this won't help you at this point as all the project files already are associated with unique file paths for the movie. By now, you've probably already done it one by one - but maybe for next time....?
There's no bulk or quick way to do this.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.
