Transferring mp3 files to mac

I just purchased a new mac book pro and I want to move 70gb of music from my external hard drive to my new mac. The files were backed up on my external hard drive from my old windows pc that recently crashed. When I hook up the external hard drive to my mac book and transfer the files, I end up losing about 10gb of music. Once I point itunes to the new music folder on my mac, I lose another 10gb when viewing the library in itunes. My music is from a lot of different sources. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How are you doing this transfer? How are you determining you have lost 10GB? Are these truly all mp3s? Are the files not transferring or are they just not appearing in iTunes? Were these files managed by iTunes on the PC? iTunes can't play all kinds of files and won't add ones in a format it doesn't accept.

  • Transferring mp3 files to itunes library

I'm new to ipod's so excuse if this question has been asked numerous times before. Last year using a converter, I transferred my old vinyl records to mp3. Most of these are now on my hard drive - some I burned to CD's (as mp3 files). Just bought the latest Nano and wish to add many of these mp3's to my itunes library. Is there a simple way to do this? Any help would be appreciated.

If the information doesn't appear when you import it into iTunes then that means that the files don't contain the information.
You will need to enter it yourself, by right clicking the tracks and selecting "get info". You can do this for multiple items (to enter artist/album details).

  • Having trouble transferring MP3 files from Windows 7 to Apple MacBook Pro

On my Windows 7 PC I have about 200GB of mp3 files sorted into different files to suit there genre, for example 80's Music, 90's Music etc. I am using a Western Digital hard drive to store this music on to then open on my Apple MacBook Pro when needed but when I try and open on my Apple MacBook Pro the folders will not open and seem to appear as a shortcut to something. Can anybody help me solve this problem? Thank you in advance

The first thing you need to think about is what files you want to transfer. Most people want to bring over information like:
    Photographs
    Music
    Movies
and MS Office (Word, Excel & PPT) documents.
If that is what you're looking for then you simply locate those files on your Vista box and drag them to an external HD. If you need help doing that visit your local Apple Store and they will be able to help you out. Another option is you are covered by 90 days of free telephone support on AppleCare, look in your owners manual for the phone number and call. Someone there should be able to get you going.

  • Transfering MP3 files to hard dr

    Hello to everyone ,
I'm totally computer / MP3 illiterate also I am new to this whole Mp3 thing. Problem is . . . I have some Mp3 music files in my Creative zens player and I would like to burn them to some Mp3 CD's. But I was told that I have to transfer the mp3 files to my hard dri've first and then burn them to the CD's , again the problem is that I do not know how to do any of the above.
Can you great set of guys / gals please explain to me how do I accomplish such a task like this one ? Please explain to me like you would explain to a ten year old kid how to solve my problem.
Thanks very much gals / guys..

There are two possible things you could mean by <i>burning MP3s to CDs</i>:
    A. Burn your MP3s to a standard audio CD. This limits you to 80 minutes of music per disc, but it will play in almost any CD player.
    B. Make an "MP3 CD." This is a computer CD-ROM with MP3s on it. It allows you to put over 2 hours of music on a single disc. This kind of CD requires an MP3-enabled CD player to play it. MP3 CD players almost always say "MP3" on the front and have a larger than normal screen. Some new stereo, boombox, car and portable CD players support MP3 CDs.
Because the exact process varies depending on what Zen player you have and what version of the software you have, the best I can do is refer you to the help file entries. Open MediaSource Organizer (usually Start-->All Programs-->Creative-->Creative MediaSource-->Creative MediaSource Organizer). Open the Help menu at the top, select "How do I..." anc click on either "Burn an audio CD" or "Burn a MP3 CD."
For more specific instructions, post your MediaSource version, player and firmware version. (Versions are in the format <i>.23.45</i>)
MediaSource version: In Organizer, Help-->About Creative MediaSource.
Player model: Should say on the front of the player; something like "Zen Micro" or "Zen Xtra".
Player firmware: Turn on the player, navigate to Settings-->About.. and look for "Version:" (usually the first thing on the About screen)
NOTE: The above was written assuming you have a PDE firmware version. If you have one of the newest players, you might have the MTP firmware, which doesn't require any computer software aside from Windows XP and Windows Media Player 0. If you have successfully loaded music onto your player with Windows Media Player and never installed MediaSource or NOMAD Explorer, don't panic.
If this is the case, someone else will have to give you instructions. I have an older PDE player and don't know how to work Media Player's MTP stuff.

  • My itunes playback and transfered mp3 files are corrupted and sound garbled...***? All software is updated.

Recently my itunes player and sync mp3's play sped up and garbled. All software is updated
and all obvious logical attempts to fix it have failed. My  files play fine on Media Player, and
burn fine using Nero. Problem's gotta be in itunes.
    Any ideas?

I've uploaded a new version of my DeDuper script which should be able to detect when the same file is on two different paths and act appropriately. The script preserves ratings, play counts and playlist membership and can recycle real duplicates while keeping hold of an original copy each duplicated track. See this thread for background, this post for detailed usage instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
Test with the duplicated tracks of a single album first just to get a feel for it. It can take some time to run as it makes 5 passes over the selection, so you'll need to be patient if you are not able to use it with the progress bar active. If it detects the possibility (as it will in your case) that two seemingly different paths point to the same file it will prompt you to confirm the correct path to the media folder. This should be the C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media one, please correct it if it detected the wrong folder before proceeding.

  • MP3 file causes Mac Projector to crash

I'm noticing that some (not ALL) MP3s when played in a Mac Projector (either using the "play" or the "playFile" command) will cause it to immediately crash. It doesn't do it during authoring, it only does it in the compiled projector.
Has anybody else ever run into this?

Same response as I just gave on Direct-L: do you have required xtras packed into your projector?

  • Transferred music files to Mac from PC -- iTunes is still blank.

Hi. This is a transfer question. I just bought a new Mac and can't seem to transfer my iTunes from my old PC. The iTunes library was in an external hard drive.
I went to the HD on my new Mac and then into Music > iTunes. There were three files there:
    1. iTunes library.itl
    2. iTunes music library.xml
    3. iTunes Music
I deleted the first two and replaced them with files of the same name from my PC's external drive.
My PC's external drive had a file called "iTunes" with all my music in it. I copied all this music into the Mac's "iTunes Music" folder (i.e. the #3 above).
When I turn on my Mac's iTunes, it shows nothing in the library -- i.e., no songs. Other posts I've read indicate that iTunes should automatically start updating and add all my songs to it. But nothing happens.
I've never used a mac before and maybe I'm missing something very simple. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Thanks.

Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Music folder" is not checked in iTunes->Preferences->Advanced->General, or you will end up with duplicate songs since they are already in your iTunes Music folder.
Then try either dragging & dropping the iTunes Music folder onto iTunes window or using File->Add to Library and navigating to the iTunes Music folder. One of these methods should work.
Perhaps you might read these documents for some good information:

  • Mp3 attachments in Mac Mail/10.4.11

In the last week we updated our software on both our G5 and my g4 MacBook Pro. Now on both machines when we attempt to attach MP3 files in Mac Mail the icon of the attachment appears cut in half. This happens on both MP3 files and mpegs. Anyone have any ideas?

I have similar problem with OS 10.4.11 and QT pro 7.4. When I write a mail and ask to 'attach' a wmv file I get two tiny examples superimposed. The front item will play, with sound but is so small you can't see the action.
This makes you reluctant to send the attachment,as you assume the receiver will not be able to see the picture (audio is ok).
However, I have sent the same item to myself, and it arrives correctly , normal size. Also, if you click while it is in the 'Outbox' it appears normal, but double click as if you wished to amend it and it appears with the tiny replicas.
It is very annoying, but the answer, pending an Apple Fix, is just send it anyway, the receiver won't know you have a problem....

I transferred my files from a G4 to a new macbook pro, but I can't access my old songs in itunes. I clicked on library in itunes and get the mac page to access mp3 and acc files but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

  • MP3 files won't play in iTunes (Vista), but will play in WMP/iTunes (Mac)

I have a strange problem that's starting to get incredibly frustrating!
Have a wonderful Mac (powerbook g4 1.5 ghz), got a new PC recently, running Vista and iTunes 7.5.0.20, and transferred my iTunes library over.
I've found that a significant number of MP3 files (maybe 5% of a library of 5397 songs) refuse to play on iTunes, but play just fine in Windows Media Player or in iTunes on my Mac.
The problematic files exhibit the following symptoms:
If I double click one of the files to play it (or hit the play button), nothing happens
If I set album art to show for the selected song, I get the mesage "Album Artwork Not Modifiable" in the album art box
If I try to convert one of the files to MP3, I get the error "Error occurred while converting the file "foo". An unknown error occurred (-50)."
The problematic files have artist/album/title info, but they have nothing listed for "Format" "Channels" "ID3 Tag" or "Encoded With" (the labels don't show at all in the "Summary" section of Get Info
Any suggestions? Right now, I'm thinking of re-encoding the problem files on my Mac, but that's a pretty kludgy workaround. Ideas would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

I had this same problem and found a solution. I used an external program for ID3 tagging (MediaMonkey) and the tags it wrote for a few files must have been corrupt. As a result iTunes would not play the file. I simply re-tagged the files with MediaMonkey again and the problem went away.

  • My iTunes library is on an old computer. Not enough memory to consolidate the associated MP3 files. Transferred library to new computer. How can I add the MP3's without having to re load every file / folder again? Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library from an old computer with small hard drive to a new windows 8 laptop.  Much of my library consists of links to MP3/ 4 files etc but there isn't enough harddrive memory to consolidate the files into iTunes music folder.  I downloaded the library onto an external hardrive and have installed it on the new computer.  All files that were in iTunes music (now iTunes Media file) work fine.  I have transferred over all my MP3 files but of course iTunes library wont play the file as there is no established link to the file and it asks whether iTunes should locate the file. I don't want to have to import every MP3 file/ folder all over again and then delete the unlinked entries in iTunes as this will take way too much time.  Is there a way to sync all of these MP3 files to iTunes automatically or do I need to go back to start and somehow try and put the library back onto the hard drive and get the files consolidated to that from my old computer?  Any help most gratefully recieved. Thanks.

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • Can't load my ipod nano from itunes on a mac; that is, I can't drag and drop an mp3 file (of a speech) from iTunes to my iPod--though the iPod shows up on iTunes. My nano is the brand new touch screen.

I received the new iPod Nano with the touch screen for Christmas. I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.8. I have iTunes 10 on my system. I cannot drag and drop MP3 files from iTunes to my iPod--though it appears that iTunes recognizes my iPod--it shows up on the Devices menu on the left side of iTunes. My wife--a long-time Mac user--kidded me that I didn't know what I was doing, Then she tried to load my iPod and failed as well. Any suggestions?

Is the Manually manage music and videos option enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes?
