Transferring music collection to new mac probs

I copied my complete music collection from my G5 to my new iMac Core 2 Duo and cannot create new folders in the MUSIC folder of the new iMac where the copied collection now resides.
Can anyone offer suggestions on how to correct this.
This probably has something to do with permissions and I have already tried to repair permissions, restarted, zapped the pram etc.
If i create a new folder outside the music folder on this mac and drag a music file to the new location then it COPIES the file as if it was on another hard drive.

Perhaps one of the following will help:

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

  • I have a new Mac PC but my IPod touch ITunes account was on my old desk top, how do I get all my music on my new MAC? It appears I might have 2 ITunes accounts which is why my IPod is not synching all the songs, please help.

I have a new MAC PC with an old IPod Touch that was synch to my old desktop, how do I get the new music on my new MAC if I might have had an old account?

The article in my previous reply said:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases from iPod to computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For non-Tunes purchases you need to use a third-party program. Several are discussed in the link in my previous reply
    - Then to sync with the new computer after getting all synced media like apps and music on the new computer yo have to backup the iPod to iTunes and restore from that backup

  • I have moved my music to my new mac air but now it won't sync with my ipod or my iphone 4s

I have transferred mymusic to my new mac air from an acer laptop via an external hard drive and it's all there on the mac but now itunes won't sync with my ipod touch or my iphone 4s.
With the ipod it says 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. Could not connect to the device " It also doesn't show up at all in the devices section.
With the iphone it says there isn't enough space to sync even though I have experimented and unticked various things including photos which takes up a lot of space. It seems like it wants to sync with the empty space on the iphone (very small!) and not with the whole thing. I have tried various things suggested on this forum but have had no luck.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

I just got a new macbook. Is there any way I can transfer pictures or music to this new mac from my old one?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are different ways to transfer your data from another Mac, but as you just want to transfer pictures and music, the best way is to use an external drive. You can also connect them with a Thunderbolt or FireWire cable, but you need specific Macs to do it, so I prefer the external drive method.
You just have to get an external drive and plug it to the old Mac. Then, open Finder, navigate to the folders with your pictures and music, and drag them to the external drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
Then, connect the external drive to the new Mac and you will see the external drive in the Finder sidebar after opening a Finder window, so choose it. Then, just copy the pictures and music to the folder you want, for example, Music or Pictures

  • Transfering music from pc to mac using iPod as a hard disk drive

I just got MacBook Pro and iPod which I have formatted for a mac, however, I want to get the songs from my IBM thinkpad to my mac. I transfered a bunch of them with a friends external hard drive, but forgot about all my purchused songs from the music store. I am pretty sure there is a way to use the iPod as a hard disk drive but everytime i attach it to my thinkpad it asks if I want to format the iPod and then won't transfer. So I guess my question is can I do this and if I can do I have to format it to windows and then transfer the files to the iPod and will I be able to put the files from my thinkpad to my mac?
    thanks!!!

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting, then you could enable it for disk use on the PC: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • Permissions Issues after Transferring iTunes Library to new Mac.

My intention is to move the library off my old iMac, and keep the iTunes library on the new one, while still keeping the old iMac around.  After the transfer i intend to delete the library off the old one, and use HomeSharing to utlize iTunes on both Macs.  Also, the old iMac is where our family has synced ever iPod, iPhone, & iPad we've owned...  I've been on the support community for almost two days now, and thought I had it figured out, but... i obviously don't.  So i apologize if there is a thread that already answers this question, if so, please be kind
in the process of moving my iTunes from my old iMac (iMac7,1 - OS X 10.6.8) to my new iMac (iMac Late 2012 - OS X 10.8.5) i used the instructions on: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527.  It identified how to move the library found in (on my old iMac) VolumeA/music/iTunes.  I used the External Hard Drive method, only I linked up the two iMacs with an Ethernet cable (direct connect, no router) and copied the iTunes folder (as described in the instructions) to the desktop of the new iMac. Then I pasted the iTunes folder over the existing folder on the new iMac.
Now I'm having trouble with permissions on the new iMac now.   At first iTunes wouldn't even open.  It said I didn't have permission, or the library was in a locked file.  I thought I had it figured out by going into "get info"  in the iTunes folder (on the new iMac) and adjusting the permissions.  which worked as far as allowing iTunes to open now (Both computers are running iTunes 11.1 (126)).
Now that i've synced my iphone 5 with the iTunes (on the new iMac) i noticed that some of the songs wouldn't sync because I don't have permission...?
Beginning to think I've screwed this whole thing up...
Also, I noticed that there is another iTunes folder, that wasn't discussed in this article:  VolumeA/Library/iTunes - Do i need to copy this one over as well?
I'm such a noob at this that i'm almost embarrased to ask for some help, but PLEASE HELP!!  I haven't touched my old iMac's library, and won't until
Thanks in advance for anything you can do!

It helps to know which instructions you are following.  Some people follow the wrong instructions and just move media, not the whole library which consists of many files and folders.  You do not do it with changing preferences.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How do i synchronize ipod nano music with my new mac. v

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases from your iPod to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. For music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs), have you not got a backup of your content on, for example, an external drive ? If not then you will need to find a third-party program that can copy them off the iPod and onto your computer.

  • I have music in iTunes that was purchased with an account that no longer exists. I'm transferring music to a new computer so the new iTunes is asking me to sign in to the old account to authorize the old music. Is there a work-around for this?

Just to clarify: I purchased some of my older music in iTunes with an account that got deleted. I cannot recover or use this old account. I transferred music from my old iTunes to a new computer and that new iTunes on the new computer is asking me to sign into the old account to authorize the music. So, is there another way to transfer this music to my new iTunes? I'm using a USB thumb drive to transfer the music. Also, music that was purchased with my current account tranfers just fine.

  • Transfer iTunes music to a new mac

I've just received my new iMac. I have 80 GB of music on an external drive that worked fine with my previous Mac Mini. I have copied this into the music folder on my new mac. When I open itunes in the new mac, I can only see 47 GB of music. However if I go to 'get info' for the itunes music folder inside the music folder, I can see that there is 80 GB in this folder on the new iMac. How do I get all my music into itunes on the new iMac , or how do I see this in itunes ?

Similar problem also. I have all my music backed up to am external hard drive from my old G3 and need to transfer it all to my new iMac. I can't use Migration assitant (doesn't work on G3) and can't use my back up program (silverkeeper) because it doesn't work on leopard (I will be using Time Machine once I get this figured out). I would like to know which files I need to drag from my external to my new iMac that will bring all my music, playlist's etc. to my new Imac.
    Thanks for all your help...

Copy everything from your old computer to your new one then sync.
Iphone will sync with one library/computer at a time.  Syncing to another will indeed erase the current content.
