  • Transfering music from ipod to the computer

i just got a new computer, and before i got my new computer my old one got messed up and i lost all my files. So is there a way that i can take the contents of my ipod and just transfer them to my new computer so that i may continue to add new stuff to it?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • I NEED SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO COPY MUSIC FROM IPOD TO LIBRARY.help:(

My computer crashed and i lost all my music. i read the last topic (the girl has a similar problem to me) so i tried and tried to follow the instructions given to her, but i found it too intense and confusing.
i would like someone to explain the simplest way of transferring music from my Classic to my itunes 7. i desperatley need help on this. iv spent hours on this site trying to make sense of it all but i cant! please help me. I will be very grateful to whoever can help me!!!!
    From, confused and helpless, Isobel.

Hopefully this isn't too intense but you do need to decide what method you want to use at which point it gets simpler. For instance if you pick a utility to make the transfer you carefully read the help pages for the one you choose. If you decide to do it manually you carefully read the article on manual transfer. Take it a paragraph at a time. Each of the blue links will take you to a help page or a web page with more information. Take it slowly and don't panic, there's no need to post continually either, we are all just users like yourself here and you have to wait until someone had free time to help out. Posting every 4 or 5 minutes won't help.
1). First of all you have to get your iPod safely connected to your computer with losing anything. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
2). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only

    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
3). Finally - Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Hello, I'm quite new to iPod.
I was wondering, can I transfer music from my iPod back to my iTunes?

I have music on my ipod that wasn't purchased thru itunes. I cannot transfer this music from ipod to itunes.Itunes will only transfer purchased music using version 9. Help..............

The only way that I could advise you to do is by an application which is available for free on the app store called "Isharemusic". The applications has been giving an okay reviews on the Internet sites... That application allows you to send songs you have on your iPod to your email, from there you can download them to your home computer or whatever. Then you could add them to the iTunes library in your own ways.
Application link to the app store below:

  • Transfering music from ipod onto computer

I recently shared some music with a friend by putting it on my ipod from their itunes on their computer but i can't take it from my ipod and drag it into my library. is there any other way that i can do this?
    thanks

    Hello Rachel, and welcome aboard.
The simplest way of doing what you're asking for is to ask your friend to burn your choice of music on a CD and import it into your own iTunes.
Otherwise, look at the following page, it may have a few answers for you:

My computer have crashed. I have now replaced the broken harddisc and installed SW. I only have my music in my iPod now. How do I trigger a transfer from my iPod to iTunes, it doesn't happen by it self when the iPod is connected and listed in iTunes?

  • How do you transfer music from ipod to library

how do you transfer music from ipod to library

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases
As all of the music came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there and it should be included in your regular backup of your computer.

  • Transferring music from ipod shuffle to itunes library

Our computer crashed and we want to retrieve our music by transferring it from our ipod shuffle. It only transferred 5 of the songs out of 200+???
Please advise if you know how to do this or if it is even possible. I already authorized this pc to be able to use the existing itunes account.

You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the songs files are on your computer's drive, add them to your iTunes library.

  • Transferring music from iPod to PC

I accidentally deleted my music files from iTunes on my PC. Is there a way to transfer them from my iPod back to the PC? Please don't tell me I have to copy all my CDs again.
    Thanks.

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not work with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
There is also a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases that you can check out. A paragraph on it has also been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • Transferring music from ipod/iphone to itunes

I recently had to replace my old hard drive.  I have a new one, but when I try to sync my ipod/iphone, it tells me I can't because it's synced with the old one.  How can I transfer my music/pics etc from my ipod/iphone to itunes on my new hard drive?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • Hard Drive Failure, so I've lost ITunes Library. Ipod more up-to-date how do I transfer music from IPod to library?

    Hi,
I had a hard drive failure on my old PC and I couldn't retrieve anything.  I have purchased a new PC and downloaded itunes (Version I'm not use to which isn't helping) and signed in however it only has my purchased songs on the cloud which I need to download into my library from cloud. However I have thousands of songs that I imported into my old library from CD's etc which is no lost apart from all the data held on my ipod.
So my Ipod is more up-to-date then my library now.  When I look to sync my ipod it says everything will be removed and will be replaced with content from the library.  I've had a look around and I can't see a way to get my music from my ipod to my library.
Is there anything I can do, please help?

Ok, I've got a second gen nano and it had a bunch of music I had put on it from a non apple mp3 player. I can't get said music to move over to my itunes library nor can I get the files off of the nano to save on my PC music files. I've tried the help guides and looked through the forums with no success. Thank you for any help.

iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer. For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

  • Transferring music from ipod classic to new computer

    Hi, can anyone help?
My last computer became corrupted and unusable and I am left only with my ipod of music, which I would like to transfer to a new computer, however, it will not synch with the new one as it is says my ipod is already synched with another computer (my old one!). I have contacted apple and they have sent me information, but you need to make adjustments on the old computer (which no longer exists)to transfer the files. Is there a way of transferring the music from the ipod to my new computer, without using my old computer?
    Thanks...

OK, I had to restore my laptop to factory-settings, and so lost all my music in iTunes. Still have my music on my iPod, but obviously can't syncronise it as I'd lose all the music on there.
I have tried a couple of software packages (ipod2computer & Tune Tools), but neither of them seem to work (one keeps asking me to put in my credit card details again and the other just hangs or saying it hs updating data, but after a few hours nothing happens). Really looking for help or recommendations in transfering music files from my ipod or software that can enable this.
    Many thaanks for any assistance
