Transferring music from old to new computer ?

hey!
so i tried following the tutorial for transferring music from my old computer to my new computer (both of them PC's) and i got as far as the "copy itunes folder into ipod then connect to new computer"
now the next step is to take that itunes folder outta my ipod folder and place it into "my music" and then delete the itunes folder from my ipod so i free up my memory again.
the only problem is i don't know where this "ipod folder" is located so i can't extract the itunes folder and now i have all this memory used up.
has anyone done this before because the PC version of the tutorial doesn't seem to be working. my question is what should this ipod folder look like and where can i find it?
THANKS!

Hi cynthia I know what your going through the same exact thing happened to me (I feel your pain and stress). You can use Windows Explorer to delete the folder it should be obsvisoly labeled I belive as "Itunes" and if you acidentally delete your music its already on your new computer anyway so all you would have to plug it in and it would sync...

  • Transferring music from old to new computer - 2 problems/questions...

I was able to transfer my iTunes library from my old PC to my new desktop.  I'm seeing the entire content in iTunes on the laptop just fine.  Home sharing is enabled & the laptop has been authorized.  Two problems remain.
    1. I just downloaded 7 new tunes from iTunes store (on the laptop) but they aren't appearing on either PC or laptop when I search my library on them.  Why ?
    2. I have over 4000 tunes in my library but only about half are selected (i.e. checked) for sync'ing onto my iPod.  But when I transferred the entire library to my laptop, everything is checked.  I haven't connected my iPod to the lap top because I don't want everything transferred to it.  Is there a way to sync the laptop with the PC so that the checked content is identical on both machines ?
Once I get this squared away, I intend to deauthorize the old PC.  Please help.
    Thanks !

    Update -
Ok, I've determined that the the songs that I transferred from my PC were actually part of my shared library.  There's always only been one computer in the house so sharing was never an issue.  As I indicated above, I'm going to deactivate my old PC once I get all this settled.  So maybe a better description of my issue is this:
I have over 4000 tunes in my iTunes library.  About half are chcked for sync'ing with my iPod.  Some are purchased from iTunes which I understand can be redownloaded from the Cloud.  Others are from CDs that I loaded over several years. What I'm trying to do is to:
    1. Physically transfer the contents of my old PC's iTunes library to my new laptop and ;
    2.  Make the checked selections the same between the two machines so that when I connect my iPod to the new laptop, it will sync with the same tunes it has now.
Hope this makes sense.  Apologies for the initial confusion....!

  • Transferring IPhoto from old to new computer

    Hello:
I am having problems transferring my IPhoto album from my old computer to my new computer
    Old computer
    • MacbookPro 2.6Ghz Intel Core Duo
    • OSX v 10.7.5
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
    New Computer
    • MacBookPro 2.6GHz Intel Core i7
    • OSX v 10.8.2
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
Both computers Pictures albums and IPhoto Libraries permissions are are set to "read and write" for administrator and everyone. File sharing is on in System Preferences.
When I try to copy from the old to the new computer, I get message "Items can’t be copied to “Pictures” because you don’t have permission to read them". I have done the IPhoto "repair permission" on both computers and still cannot copy my IPhoto album from my old to new computer. What now? This is very frustrating :-(

Where on the new computer are you trying to copy to?  Try changing the destination to the Desktop.
Another approach would be to connect the two Macs together with the old MBP in Firewire Target Disk Mode. Then see if you can copy the library without the permissions error.

  • Transferring Music from iPhone to new computer

    Hello,
The computer I normally sync with iTunes has crashed suddenly with an I/O error on the hard disk.  This has left the computer completely useless and now I am trying to manage the music on my iPhone with my work laptop, (Windows PC) but I am only able to transfer my purcahsed songs from iTunes off my phone to the work laptop music library, and I can't sync without losing all my other content on the iPhone that is in my original library on the crashed laptop.
With my original computer out of commission there must be some way of creating a new library on my second computer and managing my music from the iPhone.  My only copy of the music files is on the iPhone.  How do I move these to the new laptop?

You should be able to recover the media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That might switch the assocation of the device to the new machine but I couldn't say for sure.

  • Transferring music from Ipod to new computer

Hello, I have just bought a new computer and would like to know how I can transfer the playlists from my Ipod directly to the Itunes that I have just downloaded.

I tried following this document and made my Ipod a hard drive so I could copy files off it onto a flash drive memory stick, so that I could then copy them onto my new computer.
The ipod files won't go anywhere!
What else can I do??? (Since I was moving, I copied all my CDs onto it using my old computer, which is now inaccessible some 8000 miles away, as are the CDs.)
I would like to back up the CDs from the ipod on my new computer, and be able to play them from the computer, too.
How do you get them off the ipod onto my new computer???

  • Transferring Itunes from old to new computer

I have been trying to export all of my itune songs from an old PC to a new laptop.   I'm only getting a portion of the songs transferred.   When uploading from a separate harddrive its says that "songs cannot be found".   So in a file that I might have 50 songs, I only get 2-3 transferred.  I have quite a few songs that I uploaded from CD's and these are what are not being transferred.   Is there a way of transferring the individual files with all the music therein, rather than putting everything in the "all" file.  Some step by step instructions would help as what I have found on the internet still does not transfer all my songs.

Just checking. Have you done the steps listed here?

  • New Computer - How do I move my library from Old to New Computer?

    Hi,
I bought a new computer and want to transfer all my music from the old one to the new one.
This is what I did so far:
Copied the entire iTunes directory from my old computer into an external hard drive.
Then loaded the entire iTunes folder from the hard Drive to the existing iTunes directory in the new Laptop.
Now, none of the songs showed up in my iTunes Library screen.
So I had to basically drag them from windows explorer into the iTunes Library screen. However, none of the album artwork, or ratings, etc, are there (i copied all those files from old to new computer as they were in the original directories in my old computer, I think)... It looks like i'll have to do all that work again!
Is there a way to do this one shot??
    Thanks!
    RJ.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to the folder you copied.

transferring data from old to new and stuck on one min remaining for 1.5 days.  any ideas

If you have already tried restarting the process and it continues to stall out, the only way to do it is through target disk mode. Because USB C is so new there is not an official way to do it. If you take it into an Apple Store they should transfer your data for free.

  • Transfering music from Nano to new iMac without old computer

I recently had a hard drive fail on my old PC laptop and can't access my iTunes music for my Nano. Is there anyway you can download music onto the new iMac without having access to the old PC? I'm talking about music that's been loaded onto the Nano via CD (not iTunes Store) - Please help

    Hey there,
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Transferring music from old computer to new computer

How do I transfer my itunes music library from my old to new computer?  I will not have both computers hooked together so plan to do this using an external hard drive.  Is there a code to input in my new computer/itunes so the previously downloaded music can play on the new computer.  I'm going from XP Home to Windows 7.

    dwb
Yes I think it is better to use the same account name. The thing that's puzzled me is Apple make no mention of the issue of account name in their transfer instructions.
From some experiments on my PC moving my music folder around, I think what iTunes does is to check in the music folder if it can't find a track in the library.
If you move the music folder, the existing tracks are not moved. But if you move a folder from the old to the new location using Windows, iTunes seems to notice that you did it and doesn't mind. Also if you move the music folder back to it's original location, iTunes is quite happy with that too.
I think the effect of this is that although the path name for tracks is wrong when you copy the library file to the new PC, iTunes finds the tracks as long as they are in the new iTunes Music Folder
It is a nuisance that the library file is encrypted so you can't see what it is up to.

  • Old Computer crash. How can I transfer my music  from Ipod to new Computer?

Lightning struck my old computer, how can I transfer my music from the Ipod to the new computer (Windows XP) Itunes library?

You don't need to buy anything from the spammers that infect these forums. There are plenty of free options.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

  • Transferring music from old computer using ipod

I recently transferred music from my old computer to my new computer using my ipod by following the directions in apple support (article 300173.) I already had music in itunes on my new computer when I added the music from my old computer. Now all the music that I had loaded prior to the transfer comes up with a message "original file could not be found." Have I lost this music for good?
    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If you dragged the file called 'iTunes' in to the music folder in the finder and it asked 'do you wish to overite' then it has probably overwritten the folder tha t already existed
    (with the new music in).
If you haven't emptied you trash it might be in there, but don't click retore the trash just drag the folder onto the desktop.
    Hope this helps.

  • Old computer crashed & have to put music from iPod to new computer.HELP?

Our old Desktop computer crashed, finaly have a new computer, but am unsure hoe to transfer all content (music, games, movies & photos) from iPod classic to new computer.
Our last computer run on Windows XP & the new one is Vista, have already down loaded new version of iTunes to new computer, but don't want to plug in iPod, just yet. Don't want to loose all our music (over 2000 songs ) Some are from the iTunes store & some are from our CD colletion, which took ages to put on computer. I also have over 200 photos that were on old computer & is on iPod that I would like to transfer to new computer. Have also purchased movies from iPod Lounge (not iTunes) & am hoping that I will be able to transfer these as well. I have searched & have found several different ways you can do this, but am still unsure of the whole process. If anyone out there has had this issue,a bit of guidence would be appreciated. Thanks

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Old computer died, transfer music from ipod to new computer?

Just recently my computer died. This computer was the computer I used with my ipod. I got a new computer, but I don't know how to plug my ipod into it without it deleting all the music I have. I tend to lose/scratch/brake cds, which is why I love my ipod. the problem is that this means I can't find some of the music and only have it on my ipod. Is there anyway to put the music from my ipod onto my new computer, or can I never plug my ipod into a computer without the music being deleted?
I went to the FAQ pg about putting music from old computer onto a new one, but you need to have the old computer, and my old computer is completely dead. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
