Transferring Music from Portable Hardrive to New Computer

Due to lack of hard drive space on my old pc I purchased a portable hard drive. I ended up importing and saving my library on the portable drive to avoid cluttering my old pc. Here I am with a new laptop and I wish to continue storing and importing music into my library located on the portable hard drive. I don't want to share the hard drive on my new pc for music and photo files. I wish to keep them on the portable drive. How can I get my new pc to recognize itunes library on my portable external hard drive? Thank you.

My last computer became corrupted and unusable and I am left only with my ipod of music, which I would like to transfer to a new computer, however, it will not synch with the new one as it is says my ipod is already synched with another computer (my old one!). I have contacted apple and they have sent me information, but you need to make adjustments on the old computer (which no longer exists)to transfer the files. Ok, so I have two older ipods; the mini and the 4th gen. click wheel version. I no longer have access to the computer that housed both iTunes libraries whatsoever. Now that I have a new comp, how do I transfer my iPod music from both items to the new itunes library?

If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. If you purchased music from the iTunes Store, no worries, you can simply download it again with the one caveat that the music is still available in the Store.
For music purchased or obtained from sources other than the iTunes Store, you must obtain it from those sources again. Music is intended to go from your computer to the iPod. Going the other way is contrary to the design and requires the assistance of third party utilities.

I spilled coffee on my computer and had to get a new one, but I hadn't backed up my iTunes... Is there any way that I can take my music from my iPhone and put it into iTunes on my new computer???

iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for content that was purchased from the iTunes Store only.
Without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
The iPhone is not designed for or intended to be a backup device.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

Now, as I try to transfer all my iPhone's data into my new macbook, It seems that the only option for my music is to erase it. Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your iphone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought music from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your iphone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

How it was originally designed by Apple is you store your music in iTunes on a Mac or a PC. you back up your computer. you add to your library through the computer. you then sync to ipod classic. it was never intended to move music back the other way unless you purchased the music from iTunes store.
If your compuetr breaks you restore iTunes library from computer backup.
in many cases music is reduced in size and quality to 128kbps on sync so backwards sync would lose library quality.
finally, it avoids people illegally sharing music, or stealing music from lost or stolen ipods.
to backwards sync you will need to either get into the risky business of third party software, or find a PC running Linux and Rhythmbox and ask again. I probably said too much.

Make sure that autosync is disabled in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, set up your account, connect your iPod and right click on it in the device list. Choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought music from iTunes to your new iTunes library.
If you want to use this computer to sync your device, right lick again in the device list and choose "backup"
This will perform a manual backup without the sync process. Set up at least one contact and event on your computer, to be able to merge data after your device got erased during the first sync.
Use the manual backup to restore your data and settings again.
