Transferring music to iPod

Hi all
Quick music related question.....
If I have music currently in my iTunes library, but it was not music purchased from iTunes and is DRM free, for example I've imported a CD, can I still transfer that across to the iPhone or does the music have to be purchased from the iTunes store?
Second part to question, I understand that I can't just use an MP3 as a ringtone? I have to purchase the relevant ringtone from the iTunes store? If I do that, is the ringtone still MP3 quality or is it a different version from the actual Mp3?

You can sync the music imported from your CDs to the iPhone also not just the purchased songs
And yes you have to buy a song from the iTunes store to be able to make a ringtone for an additional 99 cents.
The ringtone sounds the same as the original song, at least to me as I am not that picky about it

  • Transferring music from IPOD to Laptop

I no longer have access to the computer I originally set up my IPOD with. How do I get files to transfer from my IPOD classic (30GB)to my new computer? When I open the IPOD in My computer, I can find no music folder.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

i just got a new computer, and before i got my new computer my old one got messed up and i lost all my files. So is there a way that i can take the contents of my ipod and just transfer them to my new computer so that i may continue to add new stuff to it?

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.

  • Problem transfering music/updating ipod

I recently moved and changed computers. My ipod had my library from home on it but i had a new library at my apt. i plugged my ipod in to see what kind of transfer there would be and it erased my ipod and filled it with the new library. then i went back home, and reversed it with my old library. finally, i had enough at my apt so once more i erased my ipod and built it with the library from my computer. today i tried to traditionally transfer music, adding music into my ipod. it would not update, it said it was finished updating but when i looked, none of the new songs were transfered into my ipod.... please help im so frustrated. ive tried reinstalling but that doesn't solve the problem.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What you are trying to do is illegal. You cannot take your friend's music. That is one of the reasons for the message.
Also, even if legal, you cannot use iTunes to move music from iPod to computer.

  • Transferring music from ipod classic to new computer

    Hi, can anyone help?
My last computer became corrupted and unusable and I am left only with my ipod of music, which I would like to transfer to a new computer, however, it will not synch with the new one as it is says my ipod is already synched with another computer (my old one!). I have contacted apple and they have sent me information, but you need to make adjustments on the old computer (which no longer exists)to transfer the files. Is there a way of transferring the music from the ipod to my new computer, without using my old computer?
    Thanks...

OK, I had to restore my laptop to factory-settings, and so lost all my music in iTunes. Still have my music on my iPod, but obviously can't syncronise it as I'd lose all the music on there.
I have tried a couple of software packages (ipod2computer & Tune Tools), but neither of them seem to work (one keeps asking me to put in my credit card details again and the other just hangs or saying it hs updating data, but after a few hours nothing happens). Really looking for help or recommendations in transfering music files from my ipod or software that can enable this.
    Many thaanks for any assistance

  • Transfering music from iPod to computer (Itunes)

    Hi,
My computer have crashed. I have now replaced the broken harddisc and installed SW. I only have my music in my iPod now. How do I trigger a transfer from my iPod to iTunes, it doesn't happen by it self when the iPod is connected and listed in iTunes?
I currently got music and filmes in the iPod. And I do not want to loose any of it, just get it copied over to iTunes.

  • Transfering music from ipod onto computer

I recently shared some music with a friend by putting it on my ipod from their itunes on their computer but i can't take it from my ipod and drag it into my library. is there any other way that i can do this?
    thanks

    Hello Rachel, and welcome aboard.
The simplest way of doing what you're asking for is to ask your friend to burn your choice of music on a CD and import it into your own iTunes.
Otherwise, look at the following page, it may have a few answers for you:

  • Transferring music from iPod to PC

I accidentally deleted my music files from iTunes on my PC. Is there a way to transfer them from my iPod back to the PC? Please don't tell me I have to copy all my CDs again.
    Thanks.

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not work with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
There is also a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases that you can check out. A paragraph on it has also been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, (on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • Problem transferring music to iPod touch

Ok, so I just bought the IPT 2G 16gig less than a week ago, and i love it. So I put in a cd and load it into my library, and everything works just fine; until I try to take the music and put it into the touch. I drag the music to my ipod and it wont go in. I cant sync my ipod because my family has ipods too, and i dont want all their music on my ipod. Can anyone help me?
Also, this is my second ipod, my first being an ipod nano 2G. I had a different itunes on a different computer, and i was wondering if there was a way that i could take my nano, put it into my IPT library, and dump all the songs on my nano into that.

Fire up iTunes with your ITP connected. Under devices in the left hand pane click on your iPods name. Go to the centre panel and under the options heading make sure the manually manage music and videos option is checked. Now you wont need to sync, you can just hit the disclosure triangle in the left panel next to your iPod's name, select the 'music' heading under it and then go to the File menu and select 'new playlist' and drag the songs you want from your itunes library and drop them onto that playlist. (alternatively, if you already have playlists created under your itunes library, you should be able to just drag the playlists themselves into the ipod to transfer those songs over.
As to your question about transferring songs from your nano, you'll have to hit google for that, it's not a topic that can be discussed here given the T&C's of this forum.

  • Problem manually transferring music to Ipod Nano

I am trying to manually add music from my iTunes to my Ipod Nano. I highlight the relevant song/playlist and drag over the Ipod in the menu on then left hand side of the screen, but when my mouse is over the Ipod, it just shows a 'no-entry' type of logo and my music is not transferred. Any ideas why? I don't want to automatically update, as I have music on various PC's.
    Thanks in advance.

Here is an Apple fact sheet on managing playlists on your iPod. You may find it helpful in only copying selected playlists to your iPod when you synch with your computer.

  • Transfering music via ipod from computer

I'm transfering my music from my old computer to my new one. I've followed the steps on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 but now both computers say my ipod nano is associated with another computer. And my music transferred to my new computer but when I open itunes with my ipod connected it is under SHARED not DEVICES and where my ipod is listed. help please.

The song is not saved in your computer hardrive, so itunes cant find the file. One thing you can try is using IpodCopy
It takes your music from your ipod and puts it onto your computer. Download this software into your new computer and try it out. I've never actually used this so dont ask me about problems that u may have. To be safe, put your ipod in manual update before you try it.

  • Transfering music to IPOD

For a few years now I have periodically purchased music through Itunes. I have never owned an IPOD, opting for the more generic MP3 instead. I am always fear-full of getting locked in to any system or technology. However ..I just bought a car ...and I'm considering getting an IPOD for the stereo.
In addition the process of moving my music from Itunes to my MP3 is tedious, I first buy the music, burn a CD, then transfer the music from the CD back to my computer using Microsoft music player. The music is now in mp3 format and then I transfer it to my MP3 player. Not sure if there is another way to do this.
Here is my question... I have over 1,000 CDs purchased over the last few years ..and while I intend to buy music from Itunes ..I want to make sure ...that I can easily transfer the music from these old CDs onto my IPOD. I want to make sure I can do this over and over again with no restraints ...no restrictions ..since I already bought the music and have no intentions of paying for them again.
Does Apple allow this with the IPOD?
Also, did anybody notice that Apple recently changed their system to allow you to burn CDs from purchases through Itunes only 7 times?
First it was unlimited and this was why I chose them over Wal-Mart for example. This is exactly what I'm afraid of ..and its why I want to make sure that Apple isn't locking you into their system and trying to force you to buy the same songs multiple times...or forcing you to buy their gizmo's to listen to it!!
    Thanks.

Ok ..I'm not hearing what I want to hear. The fact that I have to burn the music I bought through ITunes to a CD first ..and then dump it to my MP3 player ..is just too much. Thats what I'm doing today.
I've never owned an IPOD ..but I assume that if I buy one ..I can easily dump the music I buy on Itunes directly to the IPOD with no fuss. Thats what I was hoping to do with the Sony Walkman MP3 Player, or any other brand that supports the AAC format.
I should explain how I buy music through Itunes. I buy in drips ...one song today ..2 songs next week ...another 2 weeks 4 songs etc. So with my existing ZEN MP3 player I usually wait till I get 10 or so songs before I go through the task of ...buring a CD ...then importing the songs through Windows media player ..and then tranferring it to my MP3 player.
With the next player I buy... MP3 or IPOD ...I want a situation where I can instantly get the songs on the player.
You know what ..I think Apple's got me ...much as I try to resist being locked in ... I feel they have won. I don't want to go through the hassle of a 3rd party software to somehow get the music from Itunes to a MP3 player. Can't bother with the hassle of burning CD then transfering to the MP3 Player.
And since Apple Itunes will allow me to get the music from my existing purchased CD collection .... it satisfy my desires.
Which brings me to another issue I have ... playing the music I want in my car. My car stereo is not IPOD ready ...the car is new (less than 300 miles) ..and I'm not ready to pull out the new stereo which sounds very good.
I'm looking into one of those FM tuners ...the type that allows you to play seemlessly from your IPOD ...can anybody recommend one that works decent?
Thanks ...folks ...love the feedback ..appreciate the help.
