Transferring my music to new computer from Time Machine

There are probably several places I could have posted this but this seems to be the best place for the specific question I have.
My macbook pro recently died and I've got a brand new one and I'm having trouble transferring my iTunes library from the Time Machine backup to the new MBP. Unfortunately I wasn't the greatest at keeping my tags perfect and when I drop all my music into itunes many of the tags are nonexistent. I've tried using the backed up iTunes Library file with the new computer but transferring the music itself into iTunes sorts them in completely different folders than it shows in the library file.
I figure the best fix for this would be to dump all the music directly into the iTunes>Music folder directly from finder but when I do this I get this error message:
The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “_”.
Any ideas on either how to gain "permission" or if there are any other ideas to get all my music transferred cleanly would be greatly appreciated. I've got about 80gb of music and about 4000 songs are missing significant pieces to their tags so going through and fixing them 1 by 1 is just not an option.
P.S. If you haven't done so already, I suggest going into iTunes, select all your music, right click and choose convert id3 tags so you can avoid any problems in the future.

I suppose there isn't necessarily a good reason but I just wanted to start fresh. I had accumulated a lot of stuff (apps, tweaks, extensions, overall junk, etc.) that was taking up unnecessary space and resources. It was my first Mac so I did a lot of messing around to learn the OS. With this new machine I feel as though I have a better idea what works/doesn't work and I can avoid installing every little thing because it looks like it might be helpful when in reality it just sits there unused. Everything has worked perfectly for me and I have everything set up perfectly save for this music issue (which in many ways it's the worst possible problem of all)

  • Transfer itunes to new computer from time machine

I have a new imac. How can I transfer my iTunes library from Time Machine? I keep getting a permissions error.

By any chance do you still have the old computer? If you do then copy /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder on the old computer to an external drive then transfer it to the new computer.
If you don't have the old computer then you have a little bit of a problem. Did you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your files from the TM backup? Is the username (account short name) on the new computer the same as on the old computer? I'm guessing "no" because you are getting the permissions errors.

  • How to restore long deleted files to a new computer from Time Machine

My MacBook has a 250 GB hard drive.  I routinely back up to my 1 TB external drive via Time Machine.  Sometimes, my MacBook gets full, and I delete movies, TV shows, etc.  I can then add new stuff to the MacBook, which I then back up to the external drive.  Eventually, I'll get a new Mac with at least 1 TB memory.  How would I install all my old files and media to this new computer, even items long since removed from my prior MacBook and not present at the last Time Machine backup?  I'm not sure I can remember all the files, but I certainly want them.

Thanks seventy one.  I think I phrased my question poorly.  All of the files are on the Time Machine drive.  But not all of them were put there on the most recent backup, since they'd been deleted from the MacBook long ago.  How do I collect all the files on Time Machine, not just the ones present on the most recent backup, to place on a new computer with a larger hard drive.  For example, files A and B were backed up last year, but subsequently deleted from the MacBook.  But they are on the Time Machine drive.  I then get a new computer, but don't remember all the files like A and B, nor when they were present, nor where they were located.  Do I have to scour Time Machine, across all backup dates, to find all my old files?

  • Restoring Address Book on new computer from time machine backup of old comp

    Hi,
Just bought a new computer and figured that e-thing I need is in the time machine backup. I am having trouble though finding my Address Book data. If someone knows how to do this, I would appreciate it very much,
    Thanks,

Hey mate... well I never use migration assistant cos i always like to have a totally new system on the new computers without the quirks of the last one.
Can you use migration assistant once you JUST to get hold of the Address Book or do you also need to import a whole bunch of other stuff... I just don't know cos I have never used it.
    Thanks heaps,

  • I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this?

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

  • Better to setup new system from Time Machine or old HD?

My MacBook Pro went down, but the HD is okay. I've purchased a new MacBook Pro and prior to pulling it out of the box, I'm trying to understand the best way to get everything back that I can on the new system. Physically putting the HD in the new system isn't really viable for me as it's a 250GB, and I was bumping up against that.
I understand that when I start the new system for the first time, it'll offer options including restore from Time Machine and transfer from another Mac.
I have a Time Machine backup, and I have the HD from the broken computer, accessible on a SATA/USB cable.
My goal is to get my previous setup as intact as possible, with a key piece being my Parallels/Windows installation. I'm also facing the realization that I'm pretty bad with passwords, serial numbers, and the location of various application CD/DVDs. There are so many that are trapped on that hard drive.
So, which approach will allow me to move forward with my Parallels, iTunes, and various other applications being transfered over intact in their operation?

Restore the Time Machine backup. Select the disk with your backup and Mountain Lion will transfer your backup to your new Mac

  • Setting up a new iMac from Time Machine?

Had to replace my iMac with a new one of the exact same kind. I need to use the info on my Time Machine backup drive to restore my content to the new iMac. I know that during setip it will ask me if I want to migrate info from the Time Machine backup, but do I do this right away, or do I need to do Software Updates first? Or will Time Machine install all the updates and put the new mac in the same status as the old one was, including the 10.5.3 update I had installed? Also, do I have an option to just move my pics, music, mail, etc from Time Machine to the new mac, or is it an all or nothing process? I always worry that I might be migrated bad preference or system files as well as crucial stuff.
    Thanks!

Basically you need to start the iMac up using the DVD Installation disk that it came with, then use Disk Utility on the DVD to do a full recovery.

  • I have transferred my music to new computer but music is not showing in iTunes - although is on the computer as if I select a song from the folder it will play that song via iTunes. How can I get my music to show?

I have transferred my music to a new computer following the instructions carefully but for whatever reason the music does not show on iTunes on the new computer. The music is there as I can access it via My Computer and if I select a song it will show in iTunes and play - however I can not do this for every single track! Can anyone suggest something I have done wrong????

Media was moved via external hard disk, and I think I moved the iTunes Media folder after consolidating it.

  • HT201250 old data transferred to new computer via time machine, is external hard drive still usable

I set up my new macbook from an old macbook via time machine and an external WD Harddrive.
The setup partitioned my macbook to two user id's, now I need to back up.
The old user id is backing up everything again and the new user id wants to create a new backup to my WD Harddrive like it is not used.
I don't believe that my WD was partitioned.
Help!  How can I continue using my WD and backup both user id information without losing anything?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Transfer iTunes to new Mac from Time Machine, then sync with iPhone

    Hi everyone,
I just sold my old Macbook (everything was backed up with Time Machine) and bought a new Macbook Pro. Now I want to copy the iTunes library back. The problem is, even if I copy all the music, video, apps, iTunes U... from Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/... to the new Macbook, iTunes still thinks (rightfully) that it is a new machine. So if I plug my iPhone to it and try to sync, it will ask to *remove all my apps*, music, contacts... and resync again. That would probably *remove every user data* I have in those apps.
    Do you have any solution?

By any chance do you still have the old computer? If you do then copy /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder on the old computer to an external drive then transfer it to the new computer.
If you don't have the old computer then you have a little bit of a problem. Did you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your files from the TM backup? • How do you install CS5 onto a new computer without Time Machine/file transfer

I'm not getting a new computer, but my current one is getting a little old (Macbook Pro V. 10.6.8) and I'm afraid it might crash if I download the newest Maverick system, which is why I want to make absolutely sure I'm able to save and transfer all my old files and CS5 Creative Suite programs if this indeed happens. I don't trust Time Machine to do it; my boss had this happen and Time Machine did not transfer the Adobe programs. I also don't want to rely on Time Machine and any other file transfer (which all new Macs offer) because I've had brand new computers crash because of old corrupt files from my old computer converting over, and the Apple people said it's a bad idea (which would have been nice to know BEFORE the computer crashed and everything. . .) I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice, which I've already done (thanks to my brand new computer crashing once already). So I would like to know how it's possible to install the program onto a new computer should this one crash, without the use of file transfer or Time Machine. I have no interest in upgrading to CC.
    Thanks!

Avoid using Time Machine for re-installing Adobe software. It rarely works and usually breaks the activation mechanism.
I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice,
    Not quite.
You can install the software as many times as you like but you can only activate the software for use on a maximum of two computers at the same time.
To re-install you will need your CS5 serial number.
Download the installer from Download CS5 products
Install then enter your serial number when prompted.
