Transferring OE from G3 to new imacG5

HI Steve,
Let's see if this works. I thought of a few more questions. I am a teacher by the way so I have some G3s around in the classroom, but those do have firewire. My friend's computer does not, so his G3 must be an earlier vintage. I was wondering if it is possible for him to get to those OE emails just by using a memory stick? and if so, do those G3s even have that spot on the side of the keyboard for the memory stick (flash drive or what ever you want to call it?)
That would be easier than sending a zip drive if it would work. But, I do have access to lots of zip drives and can send one...only I was wondering if it will even plug into a new G5 or not?
What do you suggest?

I found your new thread!
Most memory sticks connect by USB. If there is no USB socket on the keyboard, just use one of them on the side or back of the iMac itself. He could just copy the MUD folder from his G3 onto a memory stick and then transfer the MUD folder to his G5 using the memory stick. Then he can try the import process using Apple Mail. One possible drawback is the size of his MUD folder. Not sure if it will fit on a memory stick.
As far as the Zip. I believe they connect via USB and should work on both the G3 and G5. It may be that the memory stick has a greater memory capacity than the Zip disks and therefore may be the best choice.
If your friend's G3 had firewire, he could hook his G3 directly to his G5 and transfer data that way. But, unfortunately, his G3 does not.
Regards,
Steve M.

If you have already tried restarting the process and it continues to stall out, the only way to do it is through target disk mode. Because USB C is so new there is not an official way to do it. If you take it into an Apple Store they should transfer your data for free.

  • Transferring music from iphone to new iphone

So, say I'm West Coast guy and in the East Coast visiting family. Had a iPhone 5s and just got a new iPhone 6. Figured I could backup my iPhone 5s on brother's iMac and then restore it to the new iPhone 6. Most of it went OK, except I've got some of his apps and a few other things - but I did not get any of my music over to the new iPhone 6. Most all my music was imported into my iTunes from CDs and then onto my iPhone 5s.
Question: any way to get my music back onto the new iPhone 6, or will I have to resynch when I get home?
Is there a better/cleaner way to transfer settings/content from one iPhone to another new one, other than backup and restore from iTunes?
    Thanks!

  • HT201272 Transfering songs from ipod to new computer? its only transfering a few not all

Can anyone tell me why my new computer wont transfer all my ipod songs to the library only a few and then when i try to sync new songs it says it can only do it from one library and wants to erase all the songs from my ipod when i click transfer from ipod to library its only transfering a few selceted songs

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Transferring music from old to new computer ?

    hey!
so i tried following the tutorial for transferring music from my old computer to my new computer (both of them PC's) and i got as far as the "copy itunes folder into ipod then connect to new computer"
now the next step is to take that itunes folder outta my ipod folder and place it into "my music" and then delete the itunes folder from my ipod so i free up my memory again.
the only problem is i don't know where this "ipod folder" is located so i can't extract the itunes folder and now i have all this memory used up.
has anyone done this before because the PC version of the tutorial doesn't seem to be working. my question is what should this ipod folder look like and where can i find it?
    THANKS!

Hi cynthia I know what your going through the same exact thing happened to me (I feel your pain and stress). You can use Windows Explorer to delete the folder it should be obsvisoly labeled I belive as "Itunes" and if you acidentally delete your music its already on your new computer anyway so all you would have to plug it in and it would sync...

  • Problem transferring Itunes from iPod to New Dell,  iTunes and back to iPod

    Hello - yesterday I uploaded my iTunes library to new Dell Inspiron Windows Vista successfully by "Transferring Purchases from iPod" back into iTunes;
I am unable to download the "New" library back to my iPod now. I am able to purchase from iTunes and see/listen via computer new iTunes songs, but not able to re-download library to iPod Nano. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Since you have a Mac you can use a program called Senuti. It transfers all your material from your iPod to your computer. Download Senuti, then in the preferences, set your destination folder to the iTunes music folder. All the content on your iPod will be placed in there and then all you have to do is transfer that to your new iTunes library. Hope it works out.

  • Transfering itunes from XP to new Leopard computer AND synching iPhone help

I'm a complete Mac OS novice and have purchased a new iMac. I have been using WinXP and own an iPhone. I have backed up my itunes library (from my XP computer) onto multiple dvds. How do I transfer my library onto the mac AND keep my contacts from my iPhone intact? Do I need to do a complete restore on the new computer? Will my contacts be deleted?
Please bear in mind I am a COMPLETE novice with OS X. Step by step directions for transfering my library, deauthorizing the xp computer, and synching my iphone would be amazing.
    Jason

    Jason,
Did you use the iTunes backup feature to backup your iTunes library to DVDs? If so, then to restore the backed-up files, insert a backup disc into your iMac, open iTunes, choose File > "Back Up to Disc," and then click Restore.. Once your files are copied, you can [deauthorize your old XP computer|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.4/en/15281.ht ml] and authorize your new Mac.
Note: Before you sync your iPhone to your Mac, make sure you have a backup of your contacts and all other important information on your Windows computer.
Go to the Info tab in iTunes (on your Mac) and select Sync Contacts. When you hit apply, you should get a message saying "The information on this iPhone is synced with another user account. Do you want to sync the iPhone with the information from this user account instead?" Click Merge Info. This should copy the contacts from your iPhone to Address Book on your Mac.
For more information on syncing your iPhone with your Mac, take a look at this article:

  • Transferring music from 3gs to new itouch

I have a question. I just recently purchased a new 5th gen itouch 64 gb. Before that, I was using my old iphone 3GS as my primary ipod. I was wondering, is there any way besides the "external drive copy method" that I could transfer my songs from my old 3GS to my new itouch? I had the following idea but Im not sure if it would work or not.
The idea was if I could just completely wipe my old 3GS (AFTER I back it up of course), plug in my new itouch to my itunes and transfer everything that was once on my 3GS to my new itouch? I remember having to do this when I had to get my iphone 5 replaced because of a defective power button. All I had to do was go home, plug in my new iphone 5 and voila! Everything was transferred! However, Im not sure if that will work or not due to the devices in question being an iphone and an itouch and not 2 iphones like it was last time.
If anyone could please help me figure out a way to transfer everything over from the old device to my new itouch, it would be greatly appreciated!

The backup that iTunes makes does NOT included synced media like apps and music,
First do this with the iPhone

  • Transferring Itunes from old to new computer

I have been trying to export all of my itune songs from an old PC to a new laptop.   I'm only getting a portion of the songs transferred.   When uploading from a separate harddrive its says that "songs cannot be found".   So in a file that I might have 50 songs, I only get 2-3 transferred.  I have quite a few songs that I uploaded from CD's and these are what are not being transferred.   Is there a way of transferring the individual files with all the music therein, rather than putting everything in the "all" file.  Some step by step instructions would help as what I have found on the internet still does not transfer all my songs.

Just checking. Have you done the steps listed here?

  • Transferring iTunes from iPod to new computer

I have damaged my Apple PowerBook (containing my 'master' iTunes library) beyond repair and am unable to access any data on the drive.
Having purchased a new MacBook I am attempting to move the library of music and images from my 5th Generation 30gb iPod onto the new computer.
I have followed the instructions given here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Which suggests removing the iTunes folder from the new computer and replacing it with the iTunes folder from the iPod.
But when I open up the iPod icon on my desktop there are only four folders: Calendars/Contacts/Notes/Photos.
    There is no iTunes folder?
    Can anyone help please.

  • Transferring files from iPod to new computer.

My old computer died, and it is the only computer authorized to run my iTunes files. The new computer has itunes 8 installed on it. I would like to transfer the files on my ipod to my new itunes, but i do not know how. I have heard about third-party resources that i can use to transfer these files, but i would prefer to not use any of these because i do not want to get a virus or let in spyware. If a third-party resource is the only way i can access the files on my iPod nano, then i would like it if you could suggest a safe, virus and spyware free resource. Can you help me? Please help i really would appriciate it. Thanks!

    Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Below you will find articles to assist you today
Step 1: Download and install iTunes on Vista. Please keep in mind Vista has 2 possible versions depending if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit of Vista. You can find this out by right click on Computer and selecting properties.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ (32 bit)
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_0_2_for_Windows_64bit (64 bit)
    Step 2: Authorize new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
Step 3: Transfer iTunes purchases from iPod into iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Keep in mind if you have any content not from the iTunes Store on the iPod it can not be transfered back via this method. You will need to reimport the files from their original source back into iTunes.

  • Transferring Purchases from iPod to New Computer

I have recently gotten a new laptop and I am having problems transferring my purchases from my iPod to the laptop. I have authorized the new computer and have followed the instructions given by Apple on how to transfer (Transfer Purchases from "__" with the iPod connected). However, it only "transfers" a few of the songs and I still can't play them. When I try to play any of the songs, it says that it can't locate the original file.
Before connecting my iPod, I had transferred all of my music to my computer via an external hard drive. I have also tried moving the music files to the iTunes Media/Music folder as well as adding the original file from my hard drive to the iTunes library.

    There is authorization and "authorization"
I did a similar move. I replaced my Itunes server with a new build. I successfully saved off the old Itunes folder to my Network Attached Storage box and later copied that archive from the NAS into My Music on the new Itunes server.
The Itunes folder contained different types of data.
For CDs I loaded DIRECTLY into Itunes, the data includes authorization to play the data - because Itunes verified that it was an origional CD that was played directly into Itunes.
In a similar manner, if you have Itunes data that was purchased and downloaded from the Itunes Store, then you need to "Authorize" the computer with Itunes in order to play that Itunes Store procured data. This is the "you have done 3 of 5" authorization.
Finally, for CDs that I loaded into my old server via Windows Media Player, when I did a consolidate in Itunes, it went out and found the WMP data on a disk I dedicated to WMP music files, and since it was authorized in WMP, Itunes would play it. When I went to the new server, Itunes had the Itunes version of the songs in its library, but would NOT play the songs that had been migrated into Itunes from WMP until I actually connected the hard drive with the WMP files on it so Itunes could satisfy itself that it has "autorized" copies of the music. As soon as I connected the Windows Media Player data drive, Itunes did a compare and updated the Itunes versions of the songs imported from WMP to authrized and plays them just fine.
The alternative is to reload from the origional media.
    Hope this helps.

  • Transferring IPhoto from old to new computer

    Hello:
I am having problems transferring my IPhoto album from my old computer to my new computer
    Old computer
    • MacbookPro 2.6Ghz Intel Core Duo
    • OSX v 10.7.5
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
    New Computer
    • MacBookPro 2.6GHz Intel Core i7
    • OSX v 10.8.2
    • IPhoto v 9.4.2
Both computers Pictures albums and IPhoto Libraries permissions are are set to "read and write" for administrator and everyone. File sharing is on in System Preferences.
When I try to copy from the old to the new computer, I get message "Items can’t be copied to “Pictures” because you don’t have permission to read them". I have done the IPhoto "repair permission" on both computers and still cannot copy my IPhoto album from my old to new computer. What now? This is very frustrating :-(

Where on the new computer are you trying to copy to?  Try changing the destination to the Desktop.
Another approach would be to connect the two Macs together with the old MBP in Firewire Target Disk Mode. Then see if you can copy the library without the permissions error.
