Transferring of files/programs

I just got my new Mac Book, i want to transfer all my files from my g5 to it. the guy at the comp store told me how to do it. I was wondering can i just trasfer all programs like they are just drag and drop and all the supporting technical files will follow in the library? like take photoshop from the apps folder and then drop it in the new apps folder of the macbook. or do i have to install them all from scratch?

PowerPC programs (like your G5 has) are not the same as Intel programs (like your Macbook has). I'd suggest using Migration Assistant.

HT2518 If I am transfering my files from pc to mac, do I need to make sure the appropriate programs are already installed on the mac before or after the migration?

Just bought a Mac Book Pro w/Retina display. Will be transfering all files from my pc to the mac. Also will be installing Paralles and Windows 7 to run quickbooks. At what point do I do the data migration? Install the software that I need first and then copy the files?
Any help on this would be appreciated!

Install the software then migrate the files. Documents can't be opened without the software on the drive.

Having a hard time transferring photo files

i seem to be having difficulty transferring photo files from my cannon image browser program to iphoto. the cannon image browser software came with my camera and for some dumb reason i have been uploading my images with it, but now i have come to realize how slow and clumsy it is. i am trying to get rid of it all together but don't want to lose my photos. i have tried creating a new file on my desktop and then manually moving photos to it and then transferring them to iphoto. this has worked a few times but now and error message shows up each time saying i dont have enough space on my hard drive to complete the import. i can't simply drag items out of the cannon browser into iphoto for some reason. this has become highly frustrating. please help.

What is your hard drive capacity and available free space?
Just like iTunes, iPhoto by default (I believe) copies a chosen photo for import to the iPhoto library - does not just transfer it from one location to another but there is a preference setting for this.
To confirm, are the photos selected for import into the iPhoto library and successfully imported still available in this folder? If so, there are now two copies of each photo imported - one in the folder and another in the iPhoto library.
At the menu bar, go to iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and next to Importing, deselect "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library"

And how are you spawning the php instances? I don't see that in the daemons array anywhere.
EDIT: It looks like the info in that page is no longer using pre-spawned instances, but lighttpd adaptive-spawn. The documentation has been made inconsistent it looks like.
You will note that with pre-spawned information, the config looks different[1].
You need to do one or the other, not both (eg. choose adaptive-spawn, or pre-spawn..not both).

This is likely a problem with the drive itself. This error indicates unspecified I/O errors with the drive, which can be from a hardware fault, or a formatting issue. If the drive has valuable data on it, then try connecting it to another PC to get the data off, and then try fully partitioning and formatting the drive with Disk Utility. If this corrects the error then you should be able to use the drive again as it was likely a formatting issue, but if the problem continues then it is likely a hardware fault and the best solution is to be safe and replace the drive.

USB key ejecting itself when transferring large files

I have a LG 16G USB key formatted in MacOS extended (journaled), I've been encountering a particular issue when I try to transfer files taken on another computer and copying them from the key to my Macbook pro ( OSX 10.6.2). after it start transferring it ejects itself with the "the disk was not ejected properly" message, then reappears right away in the finder...
the problem doesn't present itself when I copy a file from my macbook pro to the key, and then try transferring it back to my computer. and I've tried this with both small files (under 200mb) and large files (over 4G).
I've also noticed the transfer rate is very slow when this happens.
so far the problem only presents itself when I transfer files from one of the MacPro's in my university's studios, but since I work a lot on these machine, this is becoming quite a problem. I don't have the complete specs of these machines, they all run on Leopard, probably 10.5.something. not SL... perhaps that's the problem?
I've seen similar post on the forum concerning this issue with TimeMachine backup drives, suggesting it had something to do with the sleep preferences, however I've tried all the potential solutions from these post and the problem persists.
So far the only solution I've found has been to transfer the files to my girlfriend's macbook (running on tiger), and then transferring the files in target mode from her computer to mine... quite inconvenient...
I have a feeling this might be due to the formatting of my key, I have a 2G USB key formatted in MS-DOS (FAT32) and have had no problems with it so far. The reason I formatted in Mac OS extended is simple, I work in the video field and with HD I find myself often moving around single files larger then 4GB, which I've come to understand isn't possible in FAT 32.
I'd like to know how to resolve this, and especially like to know if it is indeed a format issue, since I'm soon going to acquire a new external hard drive for the sole purpose of storing my increasing large media files and would like to know how to format it.

How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.

Transferred .3gp file from Curve to PC Have video but no sound

Hello everyone! First post here and I am hoping that the BB experts could help me.
I recorded a video on my BB and wanted to transfer it to my Windows 7 PC. I was successful transfering the file via bluetooth to my pc. However, when I play the file (.3gp) in Windows Media Player I have no sound.
Any ideas?

You need an updated codec for media player or try it with an updated version of quicktime
or try VLC which seems to have it all.

I transferred PPT files from a windows based pc (microsoft PPT 2003), at first my macbook was able to run all animations in file, after some time it stopped running it, partly because i "switched on" something since this is my first time to use a mac ?

i transferred PPT files from a windows based laptop to my macbook, at first it was able to run the animations in the file no problem, its my first time to use a mac also bythe way, so i started downloading freebies like the VLC, FLIP4MAC, and other plug-in players, would it be because of this downloads that my mac now cannot seem to run the powerpoint animations any more ?

I don't think vlc would affect powerpoint. What were those "other plug-in players" you downloaded?
I'm not that familiar with powerpoint so how are those animations played? Are they windows media player files? If so then flip4mac might affect them.

I have transferred Word files from my PC to my new Mac Book Pro and some of the files cannot be clicked on and opened or even deleted because you can't select them. There are a variety of document files and pdfs etc. Any ideas ?

I have transferred word files form my PC to my new Mac Book Pro. Some of the word files are feint and will not open as you cant select them. Also you cant delete them either because the cursor wont highlight or select them. Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried looking at the file in list view in the Finder and seeing if they actually occupy any space? i.e. "Size"? There shouldn't be any problem with Office documents, Adobe pdfs, etc. If they migrated properly - did you use Migration Assistant or some similar utility?

I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files.

Repair security permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7/8 shouldn't be too different.
Repeat for the media folder if it isn't a subfolder of the iTunes folder.

HT1923 This article contains the only thing that worked for me. I also had to sign out of iCloud and uninstall it. Then I had to delete all files and folders from all of those applications that were under Program Files, Program Files x86, and Users.

My iPhone 4 will now sync with iTunes both in its USB-connected mini dock and over Wi-Fi. It's unfortunate (negligent programming on the part of Apple?) that the upgrade to iTunes 11 did not remove all of those files as part of the upgrade process.

I am having the same issue....Same address for years - same as USPS - I tried 5 times (3 macs and 2 iPhones) and now i have 5 CHARGES for 1.00 each on my credit card. I took the credit card info off so they don't charge me anymore. How can they charge me yet still not allow me to download free updates and say I have an invalid address? I'm sure I will spend weeks or months trying to get a credit out of these incompetent idiots.

During installation it says:

Check whether you have the right to open that file.
How can I remove this error?

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
