Transferring old music from Nano to new computer

I have a first generation iPod nano that I thought had been lost in a move 3 years ago. Last year my harddrive was destroyed and I lost all of my music. Just now I found my old nano in a box of books we had never unpacked. I plugged it in and sure enough, it has a lot of my old music on it. However, I'm now on a new computer and this iPod won't let me transfer the music from it to my new computer. This is the only backup of this music that I have. I've enabled disc use but still can't figure out how to get the MP3s off the iPod. Is it possible?

Once I have purchased the app to download the contents of my Nano onto my new computer, how do I authorize the computer to accept previously purchased songs from itunes?

I recently had a hard drive fail on my old PC laptop and can't access my iTunes music for my Nano. Is there anyway you can download music onto the new iMac without having access to the old PC? I'm talking about music that's been loaded onto the Nano via CD (not iTunes Store) - Please help

Hey there,
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

I know this question has been asked a zillion times:
I'm going to get a new computer. I want to transfer all my iTunes music info to the new computer.
I have about 4,000 songs. I've spent countless hours filling in what album each song comes from, what year released, album covers, etc.
How do I transfer this info to my new computer?
Someone please explain this to me step-by-step or send me a link to where I can get the info.

Don't confuse the _iTunes folder_ and the _iTunes music folder_.
1. Make sure external HDD is connected
2. Install iTunes on new computer

3. Copy the old iTunes music folder in C:\docs & settings\ to the new computer
No.
Copy the _iTunes folder_ and everything in it to (/My Documents/My Music in XP) or (/Music/ in Vista). These are the default locations for the iTunes folder.
4.- Launch iTunes and immediately hold option to select existing library
Option is for Mac. Shift is for Windows.
If you copy the _iTunes folder_ to the above locations, you do not need to hold Shift. iTunes will use the default _iTunes folder_ in the above locations.
5. Set iTunes music dir to E:\ via Edit -> Preferences...
If _iTunes Music folder_ location on the old computer was set to use the external (E:\) you do not need to change anything. Make sure the external has the same drive letter as on the old computer.

If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I just loaded itunes on a new computer. Itunes recognizes my nano and the music on it, but how do I transfer that music to the Itunes library, so that the music will be on my new computer. Might be simple but I can't figure it out.

You don't need to buy anything from the spammers that infect these forums. There are plenty of free options.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.

So my account on my family Mac desktop was malfuntioning -- meaning the apps open would not close, and the loading screen and rainbow cursor would not go away (its been days) therefore i decided to delete my account and create a new one.
My account had everything of mine personal on it and noone elses. I thought that since all of my music was on my phone, i could just transfer all the music back to the computer, once i set up the new account that has nothing on it.
Its not working.
All the music I have is on my phone and only my phone. It is a mix between computer purchases, phone purchases, and CD's. All on various accounts from the past 7 years ever since i got my first ipod shuffle.
Im really really hoping i can transfer everything back to my computer, because so far its only transferred the songs ive purchased on my phone, nothing else.

Our old Desktop computer crashed, finaly have a new computer, but am unsure hoe to transfer all content (music, games, movies & photos) from iPod classic to new computer.
Our last computer run on Windows XP & the new one is Vista, have already down loaded new version of iTunes to new computer, but don't want to plug in iPod, just yet. Don't want to loose all our music (over 2000 songs ) Some are from the iTunes store & some are from our CD colletion, which took ages to put on computer. I also have over 200 photos that were on old computer & is on iPod that I would like to transfer to new computer. Have also purchased movies from iPod Lounge (not iTunes) & am hoping that I will be able to transfer these as well. I have searched & have found several different ways you can do this, but am still unsure of the whole process. If anyone out there has had this issue,a bit of guidence would be appreciated. Thanks

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library.There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

How to transfer from Nano to new computer when old computer isn't available

My boyfriend has a Nano and used his uncle's computer in the beginning to add music to it. He no longer has access to that computer and wants to move what's on his Nano to his new computer. Itunes recognizes his nano but won't let him copy anything from it to the Itunes library.
