Transferring OSX?

Hey,
I need help!
I'd like to partition a second HD (System/Storage) and basically move everything thats on my original system drive (OSX etc) on to that, thus making the 'second' drive my main drive and boot drive and get rid of my original.
how do I do this?
is it something I need to do via Disk Utility? Or do I need to reinstall OSX? :-/
I have the disks to do so, of course, but I'd rather not do that and lose everything else on that drive.

You can partition a drive into volumes with Disk Utility
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
and then clone your current drive - if it 'Disk Verifies' ok in Disk Utility - with CCC
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
or SuperDuper
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
and then select it as the Startup disc in System Preferences > Startup Disc - or boot holding down the Option(alt) key. (Copying doesn't produce a 'bootable' drive.)
You should boot and run on the cloned drive a few times to make sure it's ok.
Please post again if you need further info.

  • [solved] transferring OSX

    Hello everybody ...
after getting archlinuxppc running on my ibook G3 clamshell I'm trying to get a dualboot system with the old OSX from a seperate harddisk. As changing the harddisk is not done within a few minutes I had to make a backup from an intel-based notebook.
    Basic configuration:
ibook g3 300 MHz with 40 GB harddisk. Currently only archlinuxppc is installed. The partition map looks like this:
    # type name length base ( size ) system
    /dev/hda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1 ( 31.5k) Partition Map
    /dev/hda2 Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap 1600 @ 64 (800.0k) NewWorld Bootblock
    /dev/hda3 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 root 12582912 @ 1664 ( 6.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda4 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 opt 12582912 @ 12584576 ( 6.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda5 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 usr 10485760 @ 25167488 ( 5.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda6 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 var 10485760 @ 35653248 ( 5.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda7 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 home 23068672 @ 46139008 ( 11.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda8 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap 8388608 @ 69207680 ( 4.0G) Linux native
    /dev/hda9 Apple_Free Extra 543872 @ 77596288 (265.6M) Free Space
I know, swap is too much ... it's just a temporary size.
I was not able to view the partition table from the old 3GB Mac harddisk. (I was too fast to change the 3 GB hd against the current 40 GB hd. So I plugged the old harddisk into an intel based notebook and started with knoppix. Knoppix was not able to view the partition table with the help of cfdisk, but (I don't know where knoppix got its information) it creates the nodes /mnt/hda1 to /mnt/hda8 so it seems as if knoppix knew that there are partitions like that. I made images from these partitions with the help of dd and got the following sizes:
    hda1 32256 Bytes
    hda2 27648 Bytes
    hda3 37888 Bytes
    hda4 27648 Bytes
    hda5 37888 Bytes
    hda6 262144 Bytes
    hda7 262144 Bytes
    hda8 3252775936 Bytes
I found this partition table within penguinppc.org
    # type name length base ( size ) system
    /dev/sdb1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1 ( 31.5k) Partition map
    /dev/sdb2 Apple_Driver43 Macintosh 54 @ 64 ( 27.0k) Driver 4.3
    /dev/sdb3 Apple_Driver43 Macintosh 74 @ 118 ( 37.0k) Driver 4.3
    /dev/sdb4 Apple_Driver_IOKit Macintosh 512 @ 192 (256.0k) Unknown
    /dev/sdb5 Apple_Patches Patch Partition 512 @ 704 (256.0k) Unknown
    /dev/sdb6 Apple_HFS untitled 194557 @ 1216 ( 95.0M) HFS
    /dev/sdb7 Apple_HFS untitled 2 333025 @ 195773 (162.6M) HFS
    /dev/sdb8 Apple_Free Extra 10 @ 528798 ( 5.0k) Free space
So I think my "little" partition inamges from hda2 to hda8 are the same like these. How am I able to copy the original OSX installation into my system.
    My first thoughts:
adding an Apple_HFS partition with the size of the image from hda8 and copy back the image with dd. Now there are 2 questions.
    first one
do I need the other partitions too? if so how do I know how to name them and in what order do I have to take them?
    second one
does it matter if the osx image is on hda8 or not?
    additional question
I recognized that during the partitioning process I got never asked for "primary" oder "advanced" partition. How many partitions am I able to create?
    additional question 2
    what are these mac-partitions for?

okay ... after asking within IRC someone told me just the big partition is neccessary for running MacOSX. So I deleted the swap partition, created a Apple_HFS Partition end the rest as swap partition again. I recovered MacOSX with the help of dd and added the line "macosx=/dev/hda8" into yaboot.conf.
After rebooting MacOSX started without any questions and works fine. For getting into the dual boot menu I forgot to run the command
    mkofboot -v -C /etc/yaboot.conf
within archlinux. So I restarted with the help of the boot cd, changed into my root partition and executed the command. Now I have successfully installed a dual-boot menu for choosing between linux and macosx!
    Great work.

  • How do I install OSX onto a new SSD (in the place of my optical drive) without transferring all data across.  However, with the applications, system and library on the SSD to improve the speed, but keep non essential items (the home folder) on the HDD

I have a mid 2009 13 inch unibody 2.53GHz MacBook Pro.  I'm finding that it doesn't run as quickly as it used to.
A genius in the Apple store suggested that I replace my optical drive with an SSD, however only use the SSD for OSX, applications, system and library.  Keep all documents, pictures, music etc on the current hard drive.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with:
    1) installing OSX on the SSD without copying across data from the current hard drive
    2) transferring applications, system and library folders across to the SSD so that they still function
    3) changing my settings so that OSX reads the home folder from the current hard drive, as well as all the applications' data (documents, music etc...)
However, I would like to run iMovie, with all events etc solely from the SSD to speed up the process of editing movies.
If anyone could help with this, it would be much appreciated.

If you got the data transfer cable with your SSD, the procedure should be pretty simple - and there should be step-by-step instructions in the box. You're simply going to remove the bottom case of your computer (using a Phillips #00 screwdriver), take out the two screws in the bracket holding the hard drive into place (using same screwdriver), remove the drive and (use a Torx 6 screwdriver) remove the four screws that hold the hard drive in place. Then put in the SSD and reassemble the machine.
Then you'll plug up the old hard drive by using the SATA to USB cable and use the option key to boot from the old drive. I don't know what data transfer software Crucial provides, but I would recommend formatting the SSD  using Disk Utility from your old drive ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to your new SSD (see this user tip for cloning - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122). You needn't worry about getting an enclosure since you have the data transfer cable and you don't want to use your old hard drive.
There are a number of videos on YouTube that take you step-by-step through this procedure - many specific to Crucial SSDs and their data transfer kit - do a little searching there if you're unsure of how to procede.

  • Transferring data files from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7

I've done a lot of reading this evening and I am still unclear about transferring info from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). Programs are not transferrable, but data files were not addressed directly. The platforms are the issue. My understanding is that Office:Mac 2004 and Quicken 2007 will translate data files from AppleWorks6 and Quicken 2000. I have data files on my iMacOS9.1, also backed up on an Acomdata external harddrive. Is there anything, or way, that I can get these files transferred to my new iMac20"(10.4.7)machine? From what I'm reading, FireWire target disk mode holds some faint hope. I'm concerned that if I access the external harddrive, it may require a re-initializing, even though it was originally partitioned to receive both PC and Apple OS files.

Continuing trial and error. My old Imation Floppy Drive worked well to transfer Quicken files across from OS9.1 to OSX(10.4.7). The new iMac apparently had the necessary driver, because everything came to life when I hooked into the USB2.0 port. At 1.4m it's slow. Probably the same success can be accomplished by CD's and probably the same with the Fire Wire Target Disk Mode, if you are careful about the material you try to transfer. In the case of Quicken, when the file was transferred, a dialog box came up giving a recommended procedure to follow. Easy!

  • Best Method for transfering iTunes library from Windows 7 to Mac OSX

I just bought a MacBook Air and am in the process of preparing my file transfer. The only data on my computer I really care about is my school/work files, (which are very easy to transfer), and my iTunes library. What is the best method for transfering music?
I was going to use an external drive and simply drag and drop everything. Last time I did this I needed a special file in order to keep my playlists, top rated, and playcount. Is there an easier and faster method now? I have about fifty gigabites of music so I think it might take longer over wifi.
I also have an iPhone and have already transfered all of the recent purchases. If I export my library, will all my iPhone backup data stay there as well?
If anybody has some insight or a link that outlines all of this that'd be great. Thanks in advance.

  • Transferring Boris FS plug-ins from CS3 to CS4 - Mac OSX

I purchased Continuum Complete 5 AE for Mac OSX to use the plug-ins for my CS3 versions of After Effects and Premiere Pro. Now that I have CS4 versions of After Effects and Premiere Pro, how do transfer the plug-ins to work with the CS4 versions. According to Boris FX website, Continuum Complete is compatible for CS4, but it doesn't mention how to transfer the files. I've emailed them, but haven't heard back from them. Looking within the application folders of the CS3 versions, it doesn't look like it's a simple drag and drop into a plug-in folder. Being that I can't find the plug-ins within the application folder. Does anybody know how to do this?

What happens when you try to install the plugins to CS4?

  • Transfering CS2 Workspaces to CS3 on Mac OSX Tiger

Is there a way to convert my saved CS2 workpaces to CS3? I tried moving the .xml file into the workspace folders in both the application and library folders, but I keep getting an error message that says the "workspace is not a valid workspace file. Old or incompatible workspace version."
Now that CS3 uses panels instead of palettes, are the CS2 workspaces non-transferable?

Since they completely revamped the user interface in CS3, how could the workspaces remain the same between CS2 and CS3? That doesn't make sense.

  • Transferring large files between win and osx

I have a file larger than 5 gigs, and I am trying to just move it from OSX to Windows XP(bootcamp). Since I had my bootcamp partition formatted at FAT32, I couldn't drag and drop it in to the bootcamp drive since my file too big!
I have an external drive (Western digital 500g), and I tried using that but (I think) since the drive is formatted for Mac OSX, Windows can't see it. I also tried formatting the external as FAT32, but that didn't work since (again) my file is too big.
Is there any way to do this!?!? Compressing?? I have no idea!!
If you could be so kind to help
    thank you

Hi wasaki and welcome to Discussions,
that is quite aproblem you have to face.
Even if you could successfully transfer this file to any FAT32 partition (internal BootCamp or external harddisk) you won't be able to do anything with it, since even when you run Windows the single file size limitation of 4GB on FAT32 partitions would prevent it.
When it is just for storage, you might be able to compress the file (making a ZIP-archive) and, depending on what this file is, may be getting a file size of less than 4GB.
If you have to work with this file in Windows, you can try to split this file into smaller pieces.
Best solution I can think of is to first convert your BootCamp Windows from FAT32 to NTFS file system, which doesn't have this file size limitation.
    Here's how-to: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307881&x=16&y=9
Before doing this you should consider making a backup of your BootCamp Windows with WinClone http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ just in case.
After that you can use either NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ or better get Paragons NTFS for OSX http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ for write access to NTFS from OSX (since OSX itself can only read from NTFS).
I know these are major changes to do, but for a prolonged use of files with these sizes, it's the best I know of.
    Good Luck
    Stefan

  • Transferring files from OS9 to new iMac with OSX

    Hi,
I'm one of the (very) slow ones to upgrade. Just got my new iMac G5, and want to move my data and files over from my iMac G3 400 hrz graphite. I've got an ethernet network set up, but looking thru various instructions, I'm told that OS 10.4 won't allow transfers using Appletalk and I think it's telling me I need to go thru tcp/ip. I"m not finding any info that tells me how to do this. Anyone have the know-how, or can point me to find it?
    Thanks, I hope---

I do have the original Graphite, then.
Thanks for all the responses! I did do the transfer with a Firewire, and all is well (after freezing the G5 screen into a gray-chroma vertical line pattern--must have moved a corrupted file into it. Necessitated a nice little talk with India tech and several passes with Disk Doctor on the G3, but I think it's sorted out now. Just the usual New Computer Cakewalk.
    Appreciate the help!

  • Transfering between different account names from OSX 10.5 to OSX10.6

    Hi,
Is it possible to transfer all the settings, documents etc, between two different account names on OSX 10.6 ? I have set up some accounts on some staff laptops, and some of them will wish to transfer their data from their old Mac to their new Mac.
Some users account names will differ betwwen OSX 10.5 and OSX 10.6
I know this is possible with Windows 7 having just done it...Is it possible with OSX 10.6?

    Hi,
    Thanks I'll try your suggestion.
With regard to your comment on the staightjacket... I think you'll also find that most IT Managers would disagree and suggest that a uniform setup is best, especially for users logging into a network.
I understand that some people want to be different, and whilst I agree that some difference is a requirement ofusing a computer, the basics should remain the same, such as the users login name. We allow staff the freedom to do what they wish outside these boundaries, which is alot better that some Colleges I have see, who tie the laptop down making it impossible to even install a application.
I do appreciate your comments. They are food for thought, and I will see if we are able to assist the staff the way you have suggested. Thanks again.

  • New MacBook air problems transferring music from macG5 OSX. Not enough space

Just got a MacBook air and having problems with migration assistant. It is showing I don't have enough disc space to transfer from my Mac G5 running on OSX 10.5.8. The main thing I want to transfer is my iTunes library. Would love to transfer all my photos too. I have tried just checking the music box and nothing else but it still says not enough space. How can I get my music library?

It's probably right. You need to install a larger drive in the MacBook Air or skip those for now and put them on an external drive later.

  • Transferring network user files from Windows Server 2003 to Mac OSX 10.5.8

I'm wondering if any network admins out there have a suggested method of transferring network user files from a Windows Server 2003 to an XServe running 10.5.8?
When we did the file transfer, clicking and dragging, there were a myriad permissions issues that subsequently arose. Surely there is a way to strip permissions off files PRIOR to the transfer?? Maybe not, but I'm wondering how you folks have done it.
We have had nothing but persistent permissions issues since the transfer (i.e. folks who should have access to files, being denied access, including the local server admin!!). This also translates to synch errors for network mobile accounts.

  • I have just changed the hard drive on my computer and I transferred everything use time machine (OSX Mavericks). I now have error 150:30. What do I do?

I obviously need to reinitialise CS4 in some way but how. I cannot enter any programs to change any settings. I have the serial number of my organisations license.

Transferring using Time Machine will not work with Adobe applications. Many small but necessary files will not be put in the proper place.
You'll have to first remove everything you copied using the Adobe Cleaner tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download the CS4 installer with the link Mylenium provided.
