Transferring Photoshop actions between versions

I just switched from CS3 to CS6.  Can I somehow transfer the actionas I wrote or purchased in CS3 to my CS6 version?

Loaded Actions ones saved and unsaved are stored in your user id Photoshop Preferences for each release of Photoshop. I have been able to transfer loaded action between release of Photoshop even before the migrate script was written. Warning on Microsoft and Apple OS these files are stored in hidden locations. before replacing you current preferences always backup first or rename the current file so you do not loose it in case the some incompatibility.  Current loaded actions are stored in a preference file named "Actions Palette.psp".  If you destroy Photoshop preferences its no big deal. You can delete Photoshop preferences folder and the next time you start Photoshop it will create a new default tree for your user.  Action are not Photoshop release dependant. Actions should work from release  to release.  Photoshop CS4 introduces some bugs that can effect some action that add adjustment layers they may produce error messages, operate incorrectly or work correctly depending on Photoshop settings and how the setps were recorded.  CS6 added additional bugs that effect the action recorder steps like save for web may record wrong. CS3 has fewer bugs then the releases that followed.

Is there a way to transfer Photoshop CS5 between computers without the disk? I bought a new laptop and need to transfer my software from one computer to another. I have my serial number but can't locate my disk.

you can download CS 5 from here : http://prodesigntools.com/all-adobe-cs5-direct-download-links.html
Make sure you follow all the steps before you begin download.
After downloading it, you can install and activate using your serial key.

  • A photoshop action to access external doc and create this???

    Photoshop action
If i have a graphic created, say for example, a square, I would like to create a script that
would read an external document that contains information like the following:
    "123 Vernon Street"
    "345 Exile Court
    "3456 Yogurt Lane"
    "44344 Respite Ave"
    "21267 Gugenhiem Road"
and then takes that information and puts in onto the graphic in a formatted way (positioned
onto the graphic centered, for example).
The external document may have between 25 - 100 different addresses. The graphic will only
be able to hold a certain amount of addresses (x), so after the graphic is filled with that
number(x), another graphic would need to be created for the remaining addresses, and so on.
    How does one accomplish this?

Well, that’s certainly beyond Actions’ scope but can be done with JavaScript – do You have any experience with JavaScript?
Apart from that it may, if the text is not to be edited in a Photoshop-specific way and pdf-output is OK, be easier to make a multipage document in Indesign for something like this.

  • Can I use purchased Photoshop actions with CS6 cloud software?

I have found some pre-made Photoshop actions I want to use for photography.  I am about to buy my first copy of Photoshop and I was thinking of going with the cloud software monthly option.  Before I do that though, I want to make sure the actions I am looking at would work with "cloud" Photoshop...  As opposed to my just purchasing the software package outright.  Thanks for your patience, this is my first post.

    Hi,
You should be able to use the same actions in the creative cloud version of photoshop cs6 as in perpectual lincensed version as they are the same except
the cloud versions include some features that the perpectual lincensed version won't get until the next major release.

  • Transferring keyboard shortcuts between Mac and Windows

I need to migrate users from Mac (CS 5.5) to Windows 7 (CS 6). I have tried to transfer a user's custom keyboard shortcut set by copying the .indk file to the appropriate folder on the PC, and although it shows up in the list, when I try to select the set I get an error saying it is in the wrong format or the file could be damaged. Is there a way of transferring keyboard shortcuts between Mac and Windows?

Shortcut sets seem to be human-readable text files, so you could try making a copy and doing some editing, changing cmd to ctrl and opt to alt, and change the platform value in the first line to "win" though I can't make any promise it will work.
There are also some known problems trying to migrate legacy sets into newer versions of ID since CS5, I think.

  • Transferring Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom from Macbook to new Imac

    Hello all,
I am currently running Photoshop CS4 extended version 11.0.1 and Lightroom version 2.3 on an early Macbook model 1.1, I have the original install disks for Lightroom, but when upgrading to CS4 extended I downloaded the upgrade from the Adobe website. I am receiving a new Imac this month and would like to explore my options for correctly transferring (migrating?) these programs to the new Imac. My search on this forum reveals that migration assistant may not be the best option for these two programs, any insight is appreciated.

LR won't be a problem, just install it on the new computer. As long as you don't use them on both systems at the same time you won't violate the licensing terms.  If you LR was an update you will also need the key from the 1.x version.
For PS CS4 just run it on the MacBook and de-activate it (Help->Deactivate...). Then download the PS CS4 package from Adobe and install it on your new system using the same license keys you used to install it on the MacBook. Since you indicated you upgraded to CS4 (from what version you didn't say) you will need the license key from the original (CS, CS2, CS3??) and the license key to the upgrade to CS4.
After installation of PS CS4 you may also need to manually install updates as it is often the case that the Adobe updater doesn't recognize the fact that updates are available.

  • Photoshop Actions: Problem with layer groups

I have recorded several photoshop actions with multiple adjustment layers in layer groups. They work perfectly fine, as long as I do not run a second action with a layer group in it.
As soon as I run a second action with layer groups, the layer order is completely random and messed up. How can I avoid this problem?

  • Photoshop action not showing?

Just started messing around with Photoshop actions today. I downloaded some and imported them fine. I just found some more that I liked, went to import them but they are not showing under the actions folder. I have tried restarting Photoshop multiple times and they are still not showing. When I go to import the files again, a pop-up says asks if I want to overwrite the folder with that name already (so I know that they are importing correctly). Also, I have the ability to export them but I still cannot find them in the actions window. Any suggestions?

Action set files *.atn files can be loaded and saved  from and to any folder. And they can be loaded by simply dropping the file onto Photoshop.  Each version of Photoshop has it own set of Preferences files. One preference file names is "Actions Palette.psp" This files is where Photoshop stores you loaded and edited actions.  Should your Photoshop preferences be reset you need to  load  your actions again for the file will be replaces with Adobe default file. So it you edit or record actions be sure you remember  to save the Action sets so you don't loose them should you have to reset your Photoshop Preferences.

  • Automating Photoshop Actions

    Hi:-)
I need a script which takes a folder of images and gets them ready for a website by
    1) opening each image and saving it for the web
    2) checking if any of its dimensions are above 500 - if not moving on to the next image and, if so,
    3) proportionally reducing that dimension to 500.
Is this something I can do with Photoshop Actions alone? If not, can I use Applescript to accomplish this?
    Thanks a lot !

    Hi Mark thanks a lot.
I tried option 2 today. Initially it was returning the filename without the extension (baseName) as a string with a space between each character (as in "f i l e n a m e")so I was getting the error message
"Adobe Photoshop CS got an error: Folder some object wasn't found."
I then slightly rejigged the on getBaseName(fName) handler to the following:
on getBaseName(fName) -- File name without extension
    set x to "."
set y to offset of x in fName
    set z to y - 1
    set baseName to ""
    repeat with i from 1 to z
set baseName to baseName & character i of fName as string
    end repeat
    return baseName
    end getBaseName
Now I get correct filename without the extension bu now I am getting the following error message which I don't understand:
"Adobe Photoshop CS got an error: General Photoshop error occurred. The parameters for command “Save” are not currently valid."
I ran the Event log while running the script and pasted below is what it recorded:

  • Photoshop Actions folder

Hi, I have CS2 version and there was a "photoshop actions"folder. I am trying the trial CS5 extended with intent to purchase. I only see an "actions" folder. Can I just copy the PS actions folder from CS2 and add to CS5 as a separate folder?
    Thanks for your response

If your copying existing photoshop actions from cs2 to cs5 and it's already loaded into your actions pallette, the easiest thing to do is save them to a folder on your desktop.
To do that open CS2 and click the little arrow icon with three lines in your actions pallette, then go to Save Actions...
Save them to your desktop in a folder
Then open CS5 and follow the diagram below and go to Load Actions...and load the files you saved.
Once you have the action files, it's pretty easy to transfer from one version of Photoshop to another using the steps above. Good luck!

  • Impossible to synchronised photoshop actions

On my first computer I create action in photoshop 2014 and upload it to creative cloud. then i start photoshop 2014 on my second computer and download the action. But non of the new action are there. what do i make wrong?
    thank you for your help
    best regards
    Andreas

Do you save you actions in Adobe default location for your user ID. I do not I save my actions to own folders.   Adobe Ships some actions sets with Photoshop in Photoshop Presets Actions folder. Adobe may also set up an Actions Preset folder for your user ID.  Adobe also stores your loaded Actions in your user id Photoshop preferences.  If you edit loaded actions and forget toe save then the updated actions are only in your user id preference.  I see Actions as one of the check boxes in sync settings.  I would not expect Adobe Cloud to sync my Actions set for I save mine in my Actions set folder nor a folder Adobe created.
I manage my actions and I may have different Actions sets loaded on my two machines and different set loaded each versions of Photoshop installed.  If I need a set the is not loaded I know where to load it from my Photoshop action set tree.
The folder Adobe creates for my user ID for Actions is empty.

  • Use Relative Path for Photoshop Action?

I have a Photoshop Action that is programmed to open an existing file located in a specific directory.  The path to this directory is an absolute path, i.e.:
    C:\Program Files\Photoshop Actions\filename.jpg
As long as the Action can find the file in the specified absolute path, everything works fine.
My problem is that if someone tries to run this Action on a different computer (like a Mac), the path specified in the action does not exist and the Action will not work.
The simple solution to this would be to make the action open the file located at a relative path.  This way no matter what computer the action is run on, it will always be able to find the file.
Unfortunately, I don't think Photoshop Actions allow relative paths.  Does anyone know if using a relative path in an action is possible?
Failing this, how would I use a Photoshop Script to somehow direct the Action to find the correct location of the file?  Or is there a better solution?

The idea that I use in the xtools installer and else where is this:
    1) Convert the action file to XML.
    2) Package the XML file and the apps/ActionFileFromXML script with your stuff.
    3) An installer script will do a 'replace' (or whatever) on the XML file so that the paths are converted to whatever is needed.
    4) The new XML is saved and then converted to a .atn file which is then loaded.
There is an xtools forum at ps-scripts.com that may have some info in addition to the PDF file that comes with the package.
