Transferring playlist from a dead computer

My laptop died so i installed itunes on my desktop and i wanted to know if there is a way to retrieve my old playlists via the interent from itunes? since my ipod has updated, everything that was on my ipod previously is no longer available.
Ipod video   Windows XP

Well as I said the playlists are stored on the computer, they don't exist in an account anywhere. Your iPod was set automatically and the message you got was that it was linked to a different library (not a different account) and asking if you wanted to link to the new one and replace all your songs etc. Had you said no you would have been ok. If your hard drive hasn't been erased and can be salvaged you could put it in an enclosure and use it as an external drive. With luck you may be able to get your iTunes back from there.

  • Transferring Playlists From A Windows Computer to a Mac (with an IPod???)

I recently switched from a Windows computer to a Mac and the folk at the Apple Store copied my documents and music files to the new Mac. All of my music that I had on ITunes on the Windows computer was transferred, including all the purchased music. The only thing that wasn't transferred were my extensive playlists, which I've spent years creating. I figured I could do it with my IPod and I was about to synch my IPod with the new Mac, when I saw the message advising me that everything on the IPod would be erased including, presumably, the existing playlists. Now, I realize I could simply print out what's on the playlists from my old Windows computer and manually recreate the playlists, but that would be a laborious pain in the butt. There's gotta be a simpler way but so far so one seems to be able to tell me what it is. A few people have told me there's no way to do it, but I have to believe there's a way because it would be foolish and dumb for there not to be. Any ideas? Thanks.

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and clone playlists from an iPod. You could start your research with the three below, I believe they can all copy playlists and other data. If you search the web I'm sure you'll find others:
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

  • Transferring playlists from I-Pod to new computer

    Hello all,
I'm pretty sure this question has been asked before : I recently purchased a new computer as my old one "died". I have all my music files in an external hard drive so they were preserved. When I downloaded I-tunes on my new computer, it did not transfer any of my playlists onto the new computer. They are still on my i-pod. How do I get them on my new computer from my i-pod? Thank you in advance for your help

Everything will copy over just as it is on the iPod EXCEPT playlists. You will have to manually recreate these yourself.

  • How do I move iTunes from a dead computer?

My iTunes currently resides on a dead computer (hard drive failure). How do I move iTunes to my laptop PC (Vista) without losing all of my music/videos (on iPod) or apps (iPhone)?

Don't think you can get anything from your Dead computer.
Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the same music on your new PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music/videos, you may have to use a third party software.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

Are you referring to the password for your email account? If so, recovery of that password would be dependent on your email provider. Normally they have a web based access for email, check there and see if there is a "forgot password" link.

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred my iTunes archive of music to it. How do I transfer the playlists from my other computer(s)? iTunes on the new machine wants to start from scratch.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

  • Sync Playlists From Ipod To Computer?

The hard drive on my computer recently crashed, so I got it updated with a new Windows operating system and Windows 7. Unfortunately, everything that was on my computer before got wiped out, including my itunes and all of the content that I had on it. However, since I now have itunes again, I would like to restore some of the things I already had. I already transferred all of my purchases from my ipod to my computer, but I was wondering if there was anyway that I could sync the playlists already on my ipod (from before) into my new itunes. It would save me a lot of work in re-making all of my playlists.

Sorry about that, try this link, http://osxdaily.com/2012/07/02/transfer-playlist-from-ios-to-itunes/

  • Transferring Data from iPod to computer.. please help!

Hi... recently my computer crashed and everything has been deleted.. i am running on a new computer and i can not update my iPod or else i would lose all my songs.. It would take me forever to download all the songs i have on my iPod and i heard from a relative that there was a process that would allow you to download all your data on your iPod on to a computer.. is there such a way and if so can someone please tell me how?

"i can not update my iPod or else i would lose all my songs"
If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
"i heard from a relative that there was a process that would allow you to download all your data on your iPod on to a computer"
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
For more on the new function in iTunes 7 look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • Transferring songs from iPod to computer (new hard drive)

My hard drive crashed and won't be able to backup all my music/songs that are not purchased from iTunes. How would I transfer all the songs from my iPod to my new hard drive (PC)? Is there any possibility?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How do I transfer my playlist from an old computer to a new computer?

I just got a new computer and I'm moving my files over. I saved the entire iTunes folder from my last computer, but I can't figure out how to get my new computer's itunes to load my old playlists.
    Thank you!

See this migrate iTunes library post. If you copy the entire iTunes library folder from the old computer into <User's Music> on the new one (delete any empty library there first) then it should "just work".
