Transferring project from a lap top (iMovie) to an iMac (Final Cut Express)

I have a partially completed video project on a Powerbook G4 lap top - using iMovie. I wish to transfer it to my iMac so that I can import it to FCE. What is the best way please to do the transfer? I have the computers connected via a Firewire cable and can see the lap top on the screen of the iMac. Should I create a Quick Time Movie on the laptop (using "best quality"), then export it to the iMac, and finally import it to FCE. Or is there a better way?

I can't tell you how to transfer the project, but I would like to say that mixing iMovie projects and FCE ones is not a good idea.
It can be done, but it is likely to cause problems.
It is always best to stick to one application.
It should be possible to recapture the footage from the camera in FCE and completely redo the video.
This will not take as long as you think as you know exactly which scenes and effects etc. you need, so it will be much quicker than your first attempt in iMovie.
Making a QT Movie as you suggest should be OK but all the transitions etc. will be "embedded" and you won't be able to readjust them.

I have 8mm films transferred to .avi files at 18fps.  Can I use Final Cut Express to convert to standard DVDs to play on a US TV?

    Hi
I was hoping that FCE would be able to handle the coversion from 18 to 30fps but that appears not to be the case.
It does - If I'm not totally wrong. Can be to much using FinalCut Pro (6)
    Start FCE
Select type of project You want to do
    I guess - NTSC 29.97fps - Select that from FCE menu / Easy Set-up
    Start a new Sequence
DROP A PHOTO in TimeLine - at beginning.
Now project is locked to 29.97 fps
Now import and drop the 18fps clip in TimeLine.
Select to convert it to match the setting of TimeLine.
IF THIS IS A GOOD WAY - I hesitate to say - It works - but if quality is OK or not - I don't know
I DO : use JES_Deinterlacer (free from Internet) to convert the frame rate in my clips (usually 25fps) to 29.97 fps - Then and first then I import the converted clip into FinalCut to be used in my NTSC projects.
The quality done in this way - is very good and the program is free - so I can not want any better.

  • Import iMovie 11 files to final cut express

I just bought Final Cut Express yesterday, the main reason being that it claimed to import iMovie files into it. I have iMovie 11 and whenever I try to import the files to FCE, it says can't import due to critical error. What should I do? My only reason for buying it was because I can then better my iMovie projects!

Its a drag to find out later that something doesn't work the way "I" imagined.
Isn't it just the way Life is ? There will never be a product that thought about all

(only immune system in your Body has evolved such options - to try to prevent You from modern products
    but this is very exeptional)
Yours - also frustrated when I thought I got it - just to find I didn't
eg Animations and Persons in iMovie'11 - that was something compleatly different

  • Correct way of importing an iMovie 6 movie into Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Any correct way to import an iMovie 6 HD movie into Final Cut Express for further editing?
    I tried.
    1. I Exported the iMovie, at Full Quality and it made a Quicktime version of that movie.
    2. I then Imported this Quicktime version into Final Cut Express.
    3. The audio was smooth, but at regular intervals, the video freezes for a second (and then moves on).
    4. The movie plays smoothly back in its original iMovie incarnation and in its Quicktime incarnation. Only in Final Cut Express is there this intermittent freezing. Stop and start.
    5. I have Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and iMovie 6 HD.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

"Full Quality" QuickTime export from iMovie gives you a DV stream which will need rendering in FCE. Rather than "Full Quality," choose "Expert Settings," and then the following:
    Video
    DV-DVCPRO - NTSC (assuming you're in USA)
    Sound
    48kHz
    16-bit

  • Combo update from 10.5.2 to 10.5.5, Final Cut Express v. 4.0 affected?

    Hi,
So, my question is will my current version of Final Cut Express 4.0 (bought it pre -installed with my iMac) also have to be updated if I do the combo updated from OS 10.5.2 to 10.5.5?
If so, is this a free update?
Should I update FCE before running the combo update?
    Thank You

    ^^^
The only reason i might be updating is because I'm getting Pro Tools LE to learn about their new features. And they highly recommend installing it on 10.5.5.

  • Probleme beim Öffnen eines iMovie-HD-Projekts in Final Cut Express

    Hallo!

    Also:
    Command + N = neues Projekt
    Comand + I = importieren
Leider keine Garantie das es gelingt, aber "offnen" gibt jedenfalls dieser Fehlermeldingen wie Sie bescchrieben haben.

  • HT3819 Transferring ITunes from old lap top to new.  Tried and failed.  Help please

I opened the Home Sharing on both lap tops as instructed in the help section, I've closed both I Tunes and opened again, but can't get the I Tunes on the new computer to open with all the stuff that is on the old.

As long as don't have any metadata attached to the broken files which you would like to preserve...
You could use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to "check for dead tracks on startup"
    Or
    Robert Jacobson's script itunes_remove_notfound
    Or
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.
You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.
If there are ratings, play counts etc. attached to the broken links, but you've since reimported the files from another location then I have a script called FindTracks that could probably repair the broken links, and another called DeDuper that could dedupe and gather up the stats while preserving playlist membership etc.

  • IMovie-like themes in Final Cut Express, without using iMovie

While I have been getting up to speed using FCE--thanks to Tom Wolski's instructional DVD and book--I was reminded recently while watching a neighbor's video made in iMovie '09 how nice it is to have a variety of pre-made "themes" for titles and transitions.
Is there a similar set of "themes" one can buy for FCE?
If not, how can the average person create such themes for FCE? (Does it require other software or a college degree in computer graphic design? Or is this a feature of FCP that is absent in FCE?)
I know I could apply themes to desired clips in iMovie '09 and then export and reimport into FCE, but I don't want to lose video quality when iMovie "throws out" every other vertical line of interlaced video.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hi Tom:
Thanks for the reply. I have a few follow-up questions. Please forgive me if they are rudimentary; I'm not at all familiar with FCP or Motion, or these pre-built Motion projects.
    Tom Wolsky wrote:
They are quite different. They're pre-built Motion projects in which you can load some content or add text depending on the project. They're primarily titling projects so they're not strictly themes in the sense that they are in iMovie.
I'm trying to get a sense of what these pre-built Motion projects are like. Do they create titles like one would find in the iMovie themes such as Bulletin Board, Filmstrip, or Comic Book? They may be very different. I'd love to see few examples of these pre-built Motion projects on the web. Can you steer me to a URL where I can see such examples on the web? Any ideas how I get a better sense of what these pre-built Motion projects offer?
There are no associated transitions with them for instance, though most of the pre-built projects could be edited in Motion and made into alpha transitions.
Is this something that a person reasonably familiar with FCE could learn to do without too much difficulty in FCP/Motion? Unless Apple decides to release something along these lines in future versions of FCE, I might have to upgrade to FCP, but I don't want to jump in if I'm going to be over my head.
Do you have any instructional videos out for FCP, Tom?
    Thanks.

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

  • TA26655 opening final cut express movie in imovie hd

I need to fix the exposure in a school play video that I shot, but I only have imovie hd along with idvd hd to create the dvd.
I'm going to have to purchase an older copy of final cut express to do so, I think. If I open the imovie hd file in final cut express and tone down the exposure, can I then import that "fixed" file back into imovie hd or will I need to finish editing in final cut express and make a dvd from that? My ultimate goal is to make a disk image of the dvd movie for making future copies. What is the best way to do this?

    Hi
Can only answer parts of this but anyhow.
    A. iMovie and FinalCut - or really iMovie HD6 and FinalCut Express 4 or FinalCut Pro 6 - doesn't use the same way to handle VIDEO. So one can not jump from one to the other.
    B. This has been made even worse as
    • iMovie HD6 - and iMovie'08 to 11 - HAS nothing in common but the name - not a bit of code is related.
    • FinalCut Express and FinalCut Pro was one way compatible from Express to Pro - not back
    • FinalCut is now also disgraced in naming - as FCE/FCP - doesn't have any relation to FinalCut Pro X either.
So this is not as easy as it could have been.
You can in iMovie HD6 - Export out as a full quality QuickTime.mov movie and in FinalCut Express or Pro import it to lay a final touch to it - BUT - all is glued in so no further changes can be made to what's done in iMovie HD e.g. texts and transitions etc.
    BUT !
The tools to color-correct and brightness / contrast adjustments is superior in FinalCut to iMovie where they are but basic. (nearly of no use at all - very very raw)
So this and some other tool's made me take the jump into FinalCut Pro (6.0.4) and I love it. Steep learning curve - but the freedom is fantastic.
Must problem is in the very beginning
    • selecting what kind of project You are doing - e.g. PAL SD-Video 48kHz audio
    • how the material is stored - and setting up the scratch disks (they jump back - so one must keep a very observant eye to this - EVERY time starting-up)
    • but when this is a natural habit to get all sorted out (photos, audio and video where it must be) then the fun really begins.
Good Luck - and have a fantastic time - Key-framing is just one of the wonderful tings You'll find.

  • HD quality iMovie vs. Final Cut Express (AIC)

    Hello,
I was finally able to carry out a simple test to compare output from iMovie '09 vs. Final Cut Express (FCE), which has proven to produce much cleaner output when compared with iMovie '08. Just as I have received help from online mac community I feel obliged to share my experiences with you in case it's of interest to you and helps you.
    * Footage: filmed on Canon 5D Mark II (1080p, bitrate >40Mbps
    * Imported into iMovie '09, no stabilization and other tricks, exported to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) with as little quality loss as possible
    * Imported into FCE, exported to AIC
Resulting file from FCE is sharper and cleaner when compared side by side in QuickTime. Not surprisingly the same AIC export has different sizes, too.
    * FCE: 477 MB for 32 seconds of footage
    * iMovie: 253 MB for the same 32 seconds of identical footage
Hope this helps someone. Happy filming!
    Roman

It's been long discussed, but your conclusion is not fully correct:
    1) If you import at FULL, no pixels are lost by iM. Thus, his Canon footage could have come in perfectly.
    2) "One field is DISCARDED with 1080i." Not true. IF AND ONLY IF you use a function or FX that performs scaling, ALL video is chopped to 540p.
    3) The functions that do NOT cause conversion of ALL video to 540p include SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. If you use only these FX, then EVERY pixel that is recorded by your camera CAN BE exported by iM 09.
    4) If you use no FX, then EVERY pixel that is recorded by your camera CAN BE exported by iM 09.
    5) To export ALL pixels, you of course, must choose the correct settings in the QT dialog. They would be the same as you use with FCE or FCP.
The fact he got different sized files shows HE did something to cause the difference. Had he done things "correctly," he would have the same size file.
PS1: Page Curl is a perfect example of a scaling FX. So, by violating the #1 rule of using iM 09 you get support for your incorrect conclusion. Folks shooting with a camera like the Canon do so mostly to get a high-end film look. Very few folks making a film use anything other than SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. In fact, no one making a high-end video would use anything other than SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. So, it is perfectly possible to NOT use any of the "bad" FX. (Although they can be fun I admit!)
PS2: Be aware the black Background IS one of the bad FX. Unless, this bug was fixed in the last update. A static background should not need to use scaling! If this bug remains, use a black JPEG! I keep a black and white matte in iPhoto to use with "Fade TO" FX.

  • How doI Import HD clips from HTC Desire HD for use in Final Cut Express?

Before anyone says it I know it's dead easy with and iPhone but how difficult is it to import video from the HTC Desire HD to use with Final Cut Express? I am looking at purchasing this phone and would be interested in people's thoughts.

    Hi Tom,
Pleased to make your acquaintance, having recently used your FCE4 editing workshop as a bible I'd like to thank you for making an understandable read! Re my comments: This was early days with the application and I have a lot of work to catch up on before I get to work with it properly. In a test I set it up using the 720p25 apple intermediate codec and it needed rendering. the phone uses 3gp to record. I haven't gone into any detail with it yet, still busy trying to migrate from windows mid project from adobe premiere before even attempting to provide any focus to my camera on my phone. I will report back when I get there if anyone is interested!

  • Made a 2 minute edit on Final Cut Express but at the 30 seconds (after I exported), there's a clip showing up that is not in my project, a clip i don't want in there, a glitch, how can I correct this problem? I don't want to start over again :(

    Basically, I have 2 problems:
    1) When I export it shows this clip that's not in my normal project and it ruins my project by having this clip in there; it's like a glitch. I tried to change the clip, and and still doesn't make the project normal again. Tried a new sequence and dragging the project into HD Mode and to no avail.
    My camera:
    HD: 1080p
    Settings: At Hd
    2)
Also, it's only displaying black bars above my project, even after exporting at 720p. I just don't want this random clip in my project or the black bars. I'm using Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any possible idea what this could be? Any help woud be much appreciated! I'm clueless on this.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?  : )

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.

    Hi Sonia,
While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.

  • Is there a way to go move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

This is clearly a newbie question:
I know how to share from Imovie to IDVD and I made my IDVD project, but now I don't know if I still have the IMovie I originally transferred.
Is there a way to move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

First, go back to iMovie and look under both iMovie Events and Projects to see if you still have the movie. Double check by looking in Finder to where you save the movies you create. For instance, if you save to Movies, there should be folders in there for iMovie Events and iMovie Projects. If they are there, you should see them in the lists in iMovie.
If not, I don't think there is a way you can move it directly back to iMovie. Is there a real need to have it in iMovie? Unless you are going to change the movie, there is not a need to keep it there. If, for some reason you want it there, however, you can go thru the process of copying the DVD back to the hard drive using MPEG Streamclip, and exporting it to Quicktime. Then open iMovie, and bring it back into iMovie.
